2. It's true that GD rewards painting in Heavy Metal+ style far more than Monte San Savino or Kontrast or Scale Model Show. This is why it may look similar to an untrained eye. If I'm magnetizing 15mm models' bases for storage/transport (Flames of War/Team Yankee specifically), what size of magnet is best? Has to be smaller than 2mm thick to fit under my bases, but other than that I have a pretty free hand with making it work. In the past I've just magnetized much larger models for storage, and those are definitely overkill for units this small and light, but I do want to future proof for if/when metal models are a necessity, too.

You can't really tell the difference in the same way someone who has never seen classical painting might mistake Rubens for Caravaggio. here is the epic scale winner from this year. compared to the knight I posted the paint job is a lot more technical, but the model itself is just a big chunk of plastic. the eyes and the arm guns are painted with osl instead of actually lighting up. there's no articulation. the attention to detail is exclusively about painting or adding more greebles to paint.

ok I will give one last example to explain the pov I am coming from. imagine you have a scale cannon from a napoleonic wargame. it's modeled to look like it's in the moment of firing and there's osl from the blast and the cannon itself is painted with perfect looking nmm. anyone would look at it and think "wow this is an impressive looking model." now imagine you have an identical scale cannon, but it's made out of real brass and you can load it with a bb and real gunpowder and actually shoot it. most people will see that and think "holy shit this is amazing."

You can also use plastic cement and brush to make the texture like that. And if you want REALLY 1:1 realistic cast steel texture, plastic cement + tamiya putty. Nightshift has a good tutorial on that. I've tried it on my Dunerider, kinda messed it up, but I think it still came out fairly well.

Spray primer or brush?

It's the actual metal one, I have about 50 metal sisters and I finally got celestine to lead them.
It looks bad because some of her hair has been painted when i was doing the face
Also im not the best painter.
It shouldnt look as bad once the hair gets painted black again.

Spray, be it airbrush or rattlecan. Not that brush primer can't do the job, but for convenience of application.

imo you should just never spray prime. Chance of failure is too high. By the time you've vetted a test spray, conditions will have likely changed and it is no longer a valid test run.

You know, I have 8 minis left from current primed group to paint, out of 19 - and I have repulsive feelings about finishing the job. And I would still need to varnish then and make bases. How is this called? Happens basically every time I have larger group primed and waiting. And I cannot paint more than two at once since they are rather unique to each other.
