I'll admit that grass is fucking beautiful, best i've ever seen on any miniature, as well as the rest of the terrain. The spearhead looks clean too especially with that glint, and the skinks skin is well blended.
But besides those things it is rather plain. What else was it going against? Was the rest of the competition that bad/even more boring?

>>

Or, perhaps, GD is a GW marketing event first and foremost, with history of judges pushing specific painting styles.

1. You are not qualified to really tell how good many of these models are
2. It's true that GD rewards painting in Heavy Metal+ style far more than Monte San Savino or Kontrast or Scale Model Show. This is why it may look similar to an untrained eye. Being clean and well defined is preferred compared to a more stylistic approach. Which is why Marc Mascalans for example didn't place, but there's still room for creativity. GD is constrained because it's primarily ruled by corporate interests compared to being made by and for artists. Still they are better than before, Roman Lapat was one of the judges.
>>
>>96898972
As a commission painter (by brothers are as well) it means you can get far more clout for free and sell your services more and for a higher price. I'm considering entering something maybe next year or the year after that.
>>
>>96899102
You don't really need to be qualified to tell when X looks the same, anon. There's no criticism in that post, it's an observation, you don't need to go all redditor authority fallacy on me.
>>
This is my first time participating in Secret Santa and packages from gallery differs widely in content. I'm not sure how much of the minis should I put in, are there any agreed "standards"?
>>
>>96899395
A long ass time ago it was a money standard of like $40 but inflation is a bitch. Just don’t grinch your match and it’ll be fine.
>>
If I'm magnetizing 15mm models' bases for storage/transport (Flames of War/Team Yankee specifically), what size of magnet is best? Has to be smaller than 2mm thick to fit under my bases, but other than that I have a pretty free hand with making it work. In the past I've just magnetized much larger models for storage, and those are definitely overkill for units this small and light, but I do want to future proof for if/when metal models are a necessity, too.
Thanks.
>>
>>96899420
Alright. My match mentioned unique models and I have certain set of minis in mind.
>>
>>96899148
I mean that it only looks the same to you because most models look the same to a newbie. You can't really tell the difference in the same way someone who has never seen classical painting might mistake Rubens for Caravaggio. The differences are quite obvious and they don't look the same, with some exceptions of going pure GW box art style by the painters who won GDs this year and used to work for GW as painters.

tmm is a nonsense term to begin with since if you are painting highlights on your metal it's not "true metal" anymore and already one step towards "non metal" on the spectrum.

>>96899102
gd is boring because it's just a painting contest instead of a modelling contest. there's nothing technically impressive about the winners aside from the paint job itself. for example you will often see winners with well executed osl, but you never see ones converted with actual leds. for me a model like this is 10x more impressive than any gd winner.

Eyes and skin went better this time but I'm not sure how to fix the tails - fox fur is supposed to be something between yellow and orange or desaturated orange, do I understood this correctly but mine went too orange.
>>
>>96899643
>might mistake Rubens for Caravaggio.
There's no mistaking the two, anon. Perhaps there would be less mental gymnastics on your side if you would stop going all apologetic for what is simply an obvious preference by GD judges. It's not like this behavior is something new, either.
>>
>>96899832
I think that orange's a bit bright. Reality seems to be more about reddish browns, but just a more muted orange (pulling towards brown more in the shadows as opposed to the very red ones you have) would probably still read as "fox".
>>
>>96899883
What would you suggest at this point then? Any "safe" method of desaturating colors that does not require painting all over?
>>
>>96899901

I don't really get the 28 aesthetic.

Actually no, I do get the actual aesthetic.

But why is everything hot glue stained and dry brushed and maybe oil washed?

It's like they're all a cop out from painting something properly.

Fun fact - when humans tried growing foxes for purpose of house pets, they would, over few generations, turn increasingly round, fluffy and playful. Imagine trying to tame wild animal and it slowly turn into living plushie.

show me gd winners that do interesting modelling stuff like drilling lenses out and replacing them with actual clear material or vehicles with wheels that spin instead of being glued in place or cockpits that open with a guy inside.
>>
>>96900060
>>96900147
It's just good old contrarianism, don't worry about it. Just like thinking sticking a led up a models ass is more impressive than painting OSL around said asshole. Not a single person here paints anywhere near GD-winning level so our opinions are worth about as much as armchair sport experts.
>>
>>96900147
here is the epic scale winner from this year. compared to the knight I posted the paint job is a lot more technical, but the model itself is just a big chunk of plastic. the eyes and the arm guns are painted with osl instead of actually lighting up. there's no articulation. the attention to detail is exclusively about painting or adding more greebles to paint.
>>
>>96900272
They're trying to show off their skill in this competition and no matter how much you disagree with this painting good quality OSL takes way more skill than putting a led there instead.
>>
>>96900272
Because it's a painting competition and not a modelling one??
>>
here is the vehicle winner which is also boring to me from a modelling perspective. the lenses on the guns and the spotlights are all just painted. I've seen scale modellers who remove things like this and replace them with actual clear plastic with a reflective foil backing. the end result is way more realistic and impressive looking.
>>
>>96900303
The guy who posts admech here's version of this model was unironically better than this.

>I've seen scale modellers who remove things like this and replace them with actual clear plastic with a reflective foil backing. the end result is way more realistic and impressive looking.

Yes, but who cares in a painting competition for warhammer models?
>>
>>96900289
you can't compare painting skill and engineering skill

>>96900293
that's what I said in my first reply. I was trying to explain why the other poster was finding gd winners "boring." at the end of the day it's just well painted chunks of plastic where the promo image shows the best it has to offer, whereas really impressive scale model work has tons of detail that can only be appreciated as a 3d object.
>>
>>96900354
You can find a technically perfect paintjob "boring", without having to compare it to some scale model work on the conversion side of the hobby.
A paintjob in itself can be interesting in itself too, even if its not technically as perfect as that "Lizard".
>>
So is this just a repeat of the single normal ultramarine paint job winning?
>>
>>96900272
Having a model light up looks like shit - unlike this wonderful and atmospheric piece. This looks in scale, unlike slapping some LEDs inside a gun.
>>
>>96900386
you're still facing the perception of "this is cool but how much more cool is it than if it was painted on canvas instead of a plastic toy?" for example if you paint a potion bottle on a canvas and it looks magical and tasty that's one level of impressiveness. if you paint a tiny plastic potion bottle the same way it will have about the same level of impressiveness, but if you replace the solid plastic bottle with a clear one and fill it with colored liquid that will slosh around when you pick it up and move it you can achieve a completely different level of impressiveness. it's like how given the same level of detail an action figure will seem cooler than a fixed pose figurine.
>>
>>96900474
Let's just call it a difference in approaches and move on, this discussion is going nowhere.
>>
>>96900317
I was just thinking about that lmao. I don't have the pic, but someone will probably post it.
>>
ok I will give one last example to explain the pov I am coming from. imagine you have a scale cannon from a napoleonic wargame. it's modeled to look like it's in the moment of firing and there's osl from the blast and the cannon itself is painted with perfect looking nmm. anyone would look at it and think "wow this is an impressive looking model." now imagine you have an identical scale cannon, but it's made out of real brass and you can load it with a bb and real gunpowder and actually shoot it. most people will see that and think "holy shit this is amazing."

>>
>>96899925
because the point of it is to get YOUR dudes ready for battle.

since theres no 'base' model to start with everyone uses random crap and hot glues it together, and a lot of the time the idea behind the model is more important than the paintjob, because how many other people are going to have a crystal headed giant, or a spore based statue army, or living scarecrows.

theres a lower level of technique needed to reach a unique state compared to "another ultramarine successor chapter, but its got red on it here and theres a few of them with space wolf axes"

the picture you posted caught my imagination FAR better than 90% of the technically amazingly painted and modeled minis in this thread

>>96900354

looks very cool, anon!
You can also use plastic cement and brush to make the texture like that. And if you want REALLY 1:1 realistic cast steel texture, plastic cement + tamiya putty. Nightshift has a good tutorial on that. I've tried it on my Dunerider, kinda messed it up, but I think it still came out fairly well.

They're anchor chains for scale model ships. Very cool and smaller than your standard 1mm hobby chains, although because of their size, glueing them on without gunking up the details requires some care. Here they are on an initiate lad I posted a while back

Worked a bit on the base. Wanted to give the drained woman a bit undead, but it's too greyish...
Also worked on the red more to make it pop.

>>96904340
Damn that's a cute model
>>
>>96902048
It looks out of place completely, more like a joke than a representation of a banner a legion would have.
>>
Secretly hoping that I get some coomer minis in my gift.

>>96904726
Is this the actual Citadel miniature, or a resin Chinesium recast? The right side of her face looks like she suffered some [LETHAL HITS] or even [DEVASTATING WOUNDS].

Spray primer or brush?
>>
>>96905793
It's the actual metal one, I have about 50 metal sisters and I finally got celestine to lead them.
It looks bad because some of her hair has been painted when i was doing the face
Also im not the best painter.
It shouldnt look as bad once the hair gets painted black again.
>>
>>96905820
Spray, be it airbrush or rattlecan. Not that brush primer can't do the job, but for convenience of application.
>>
>>96898412
cute

I mean there's no universal answer to this question. What's the temperature? Humidity? What number of models are you painting?

Do not use a spray under those conditions, you will get a horrible grainy texture.
>>
>>96906399
imo you should just never spray prime. Chance of failure is too high. By the time you've vetted a test spray, conditions will have likely changed and it is no longer a valid test run.
>>
>>96906461
Poor bait.
>>
>>96906513
you're free to risk it if you want. I won't stop you.
>>
>>96904886 Thanks man, appreciate it
>>96905793 Oh, there they are, I didn’t think to check there. Thanks.
>>
You know, I have 8 minis left from current primed group to paint, out of 19 - and I have repulsive feelings about finishing the job. And I would still need to varnish then and make bases. How is this called? Happens basically every time I have larger group primed and waiting. And I cannot paint more than two at once since they are rather unique to each other.
>>
>>96906513
some anons really love that forced meme even if it has been proven wrong time after time
or just a marketing campaign to sell airbrush primer
>>
>>96906696
I also hate airbrush primer.
