Besides mythology and movies/series, what are some other good sources of inspiration for interesting creatures ?
I personally like to use outdated paleoart

This reads exactly like a bumpcuck thread. Prove you're not him and I'll let you in on a little secret about worldbuilding a shittonne of creatures.

I'm not even OP but do how you see my verification? I'm not a robot.

>>96902986
sounds like if I lurked more like you...i'd have a stick up my butt and not only not participate in conversation, but be suspicious of anyone trying to have one and come in like a thundering fart and ruin it

Look mate I don't wanna catch a ban just in case this thread isn't bumped to hell and back, as then I actually will contribute beyond (merited) suspicion

Jannies will have a melty if I give you the FRD, but essentially he's a regular who pretends to be interested in shut but actually just prompts you with endless vague questions like a braindead child. It's an insidious killer cuz it's so hard for a newfag to tell the difference between that and genuine discussion, you're like ten in-depth posts in before he starts repeating questions and you realize you've been effortposting to the human equivalent of a brick wall. Once he latches onto a thread though he keeps it bumped forever, so he's a protected species for the ones that want to pretend activity hasn't dropped to apocalyptic levels.

...Yknow, describing him like that, a creative vampire is actually a really cool concept for a creature. Might have to flesh that out.

Do cryptids count as mythological? Because there are some weird ones out there.
>>
>>96905134
I think cryptids fall in a grey area between mythology, pop culture, sci-fy and reality

The secret to making a bestiary is that animals are actually really samey. Look at OP. It's basically a bunch of four legged lizards with a bunch of variations. What's the real difference between a bear, a wolf, a deer, and a capybara? Fuck all, except size and strength and diet and antlers and fur.

So here's the cheat: don't bend your arse over backwards to make a shittonne of unique animals. Make 3-4, and then modify/blend them. You can get a whole >>96900758
genus just by taking a single creature and asking "what if they were":
>tiny/huge
>more aggressive/timid?
>adapted to extreme cold/hot/dry/acid/etc
>natural predators of a particular creature
>crossed with another creatures?
>tamed for a specific purpose?

Like lets imagine a large bantha-like crustacean that moves like a caterpillar (or an accordion). It uses the compressing motion to expel gas into the air that it collects from digesting tonnes of greenery and seaweed. It also eats poisonous mushrooms, stores their gas in a special sack, and can expel that as a defence mechanism. Cool, nice base. Now let's make them:
>huge (like REALLY huge; they get mistaken for islands shrouded in fog)
>agrressive (jack-in-the-box ambush predator. Leaves haunting blood red mists after consuming living beings)
>adapted to acid (rubbery skin instead of chitin make it more grub-like. Digests metal like a rust monster. Commonly found at old sites of battle)
>natural predators of weedles (see pic. Large eyes and a long prehensile tongue allow them to spot the hopping grassheads and give them an undesired haircut)
>crossed with tilils, ie tiny single-feathered birds (tiny haunches now feature a tail that they use for primitive communication, and thus live in packs. A big enough pack can pose a serious threat to a forest)
>tamed (leaner, sleeker, great for carrying heavy freight, but even with underdeveloped vents they have to be saddled with "exhaust pipes" to funnel the sour smell away from the rider)

Shit's easy.

This is accurate, and I use a similar method for designing animals. Just lay out some ground rules for basal traits and then do variations based off that.
For example, in my SF setting the animals on the homeworld of one of the species all share a standardized bodyplan of having 4 body segments, with the ancestral condition being three pairs of limbs in all segments except the last. Some species have lost one or more pairs of limbs, and in many cases the limbs on the head-segment have evolved into mandibles, but none of them have more than 9 pairs of limbs or more than 4 body segments.
