I was actually thinking the same thing, just maybe not something as old as what you posted.
If anything, I feel like the art they used just calls attention to how GW's art has declined aggressively over the last few years. The subject(s) aren't doing anything engaging, which is compounded dramatically by just how sterile the art itself is.
If GW wanted it to mean fucking anything, they should have gone with one of the more iconic styles from the 80s or late 90s/early 2000s. They also shouldn't have slapped a Stormcast on there because it only calls attention to the fact that they've had zero cultural impact. It should have been a space marine and a GREEN fucking Fantasy orc.

i don't want to derail the thread into more AoS bitching but how did they fuck stormcasts up so badly? it's such a shit worthless addition to the setting, their lore sucks and the models look like shit. i get that they are supposed to be easy to paint, though i doubt they really are because of modern GW detail creep. i feel like they are literally the last option anyone would go for when picking an AoS army, the exact opposite of space marines.
>>
>>96902117
Because they wanted to add fantasy space marines, but fantasy already had them *chaos warriors) so they had to make them even bigger and pauldron-ier and it just ruined all the established dynamics.
>>

They wanted a fantasy Space Marine, not in the literal sense, but in a more figurative sense. GW wanted a posterboy faction that was easy to paint, a protagonist in the setting, and was completely unique to GW for copyright purposes.

I wouldn't mind a Repanse update in the slightest. Grail Knights are functionally immortal, retcon her to be a little older. >>
>>96902117
A lot of aos design decisions, especially during that initial 6 month pre GHB era need to be viewed from the specific context of "oh shit fantasy ded we need to avoid the same mistakes". Problem is gw was kind of retarded about what the mistakes of fantasy actually are. Anyway a lot of the weirder ideas 'make sense' viewed from that lens:
-points bloat making it impossible for new players ro get into the game? Points don't exist just put whatever you want on the table til both of you agree :)
-stagnant setting causes inertia, endless grog seething when anything new is introduced (gyrocopters, demigryphs, hell pit abo's...)? Make the setting nigh-infinite with similarily nigh-infinity options
In a similar vein stormcast exist to solve a simple problem, the lack of an easy intro faction. Space marines fit this role for 40k and have been in literally every single starter box, they're piss-easy to paint (large, no faces, big open spaces). Whfb didn't really have that (actually they did in chaos warriors but they're evil so not perfect in attracting 12 year olds). Stormcast exist to fill that gap. While they're not a lot of people's favourite army, they ARE a lot of people's beginner army, after which they moved on to another aos army with more polarizing aesthetics.
>>96903144
Chest could be like 10 different things from across all 4 major systems. I'm going to guess dogs of war though.
>>
>>96904307
>While they're not a lot of people's favourite army, they ARE a lot of people's beginner army

AoS might be getting some nurgle and a chest doesn't line up with anything in that range so doubtful. Also a firework isn't necessarily Cathay seeing as they already have a rocket, it could be chorfs from aos etc
>>
>>96903829
It's a paymasters chest.
Usually it had multiple locks opened with different keys held by different high ranking members of the mercenary group.
They had multiple locks so that no one person could open it and steal everyone's pay.

>>

dogs of war make sense eventually given the baked in system for mercenaries since day one and the possibility of bringing back some old metal units for a run or two or even permanently

I'm not really expecting a plastic kit, but if they did one plastic kit for models on foot in full plate armour with a choice of pike or crossbow, optional pavises, and a choice of morion and corinthian helmets, that would immediately become a best selling product, I assure it
>>

>>

DoW and Ogres are the only armies actively mentioned in the fluff that also aren't having to redesign another massive army. They gotta release some boxed product other than Kislev and Cathay sculpts next year.
>>
>>96904652
>DoW and Ogres are the only armies actively mentioned in the fluff
the rulebook also talks about the vampire wars, the dark elves sundering, the great cataclysm with lizards and demons
skaven are also mentioned more often than ogres in the rulebook
>>
>>96904669
But those are all "they are busy" mentions. Ogres and Dogs of War are mentioned as active combatants in the current wars going on in the old world. Cathay in particular treats ogres as big of a threat as the forces of chaos to the north but no matter they try they can't wipe them out.

Quick question on placement of characters on different bases:

A single rank Chaos Knight unit accompanied by a Champion on Daemonic Mount. Normally a character who can't be placed neatly must be positioned to the side.

However, the FAQ says a character can be positioned with the command group and Mount base (40 x 60) does seem to fit neatly so am I right it could be beside the command group towards the middle?

Why do you never see Preytons in peoples Beastmen armies? is it just because they are a recent returnee rather than something thats been in AoS for the last decade and never went away? for the points it seems like a neat ambusher for any army with a Beastlord general.

Are Ungor bowmen always skirmishers? half the people at my locals have them in two rows of 5 in a 10 man unit tray like with tomb king archers but others use them as individual minis.

TTCombat's mdf terrain is annoying to paint if you want it to look like your image. Airbrush or cans 100% necessary, and you'll want to add texture to the buildings with additional pieces or like sand or something
If you're doing some 40k shit that just needs a base color with some drybrushing and sponging it's quite good.

Big announcement for TOW this weekend is Dogs of War, mostly new plastics + I think all the current DoW units but not sure, they're not directly bringing back the old ones but there's rules for a unit of Undead lead by a Vampire and also Witch Hunters for some reason. Also it looks like the AoS ogre bulls are being used as the models for Badlands Ogre bulls too (maybe this is where the Ogre AJ rumours are coming from). No Cathay third wave (yet), but some more Norsca stuff like a Shaman dude and also returning Forgeworld stuff (don't know what though).

Reminder that canonically:
>The WHFB world is a planet in the 40k universe
>Sigmar is one the lost Primarchs
>The inhabitants of the WHFB world are outstandingly tough, which is a subtle effect of the whole world being permeated by the winds of magic
>This is why they can go toe-to-toe with the daemons flowing out of the polar gates, which are the exact same ones that usually require high-tech weaponry to be dealt with

I stress again that this is
a)100% canon (every GW attempt to later retcon this is to be regarded as purely fanfiction)
b) You are encouraged to pit 40k against WHFB armies (use WHFB rules and treat all 40k units as skirmishers), representing 40k forces fending for themselves after crash landing there
>>
>>96907315
>>The WHFB world is a planet in the 40k universe

Skirmishers on trays is losing over half the value of their movement. Being able to wrap around chariots (when relevant), objects, terrain, or screen multiple units is very useful.

Primal herd basically got fucked by the infantry change. If they had done pic they would be amazing, but now they are an extra expensive core tax that dies a bit slower to ranged attacks.

>>
>>96907392
>incorrect, that's because chaos is a relative enemy, like a shadow
NTA, was one he replied to, but relativety is a point in WFB's favour for toughness. Daemons have two permanent warp rifts feeding them in WFB so their grasp on reality is much stronger there than in 40k, meaning they're harder to banish.

Imagine how much better off Fantasy would be if GW wasn't pants on head retarded.
>>
>>96908201
We need plastic Grail/Questing Knights, plastic Damsels and a new Hippogryph. I feel like the new WHQ hero started as a Damsel prototype and then the TOW team noped the fuck out when they saw her face.

Also if they feel compelled to make female Brettonian Knights, make them Unicorn Knights so we at least get a new Rare monstrous cavalry pick.
>>
>>96908966
>The General's Compendium
It was probably too good a deal for GW to handle
>>
>>96908201
I feel like its extremely obvious that knights of the realm, pegasus knights and men at arms wont get an update this edition as they are models in the core starter sets that they still currently sell. Same goes for the various ancient tomb kings skeleton units. Its easy to just stop producing the old marauder kit and let it sell out but dropping the editions starter sets mid edition seems ludicrously unlikely.
I think it is possible that grail/questing knights get a refresh but realistically I think its unlikely well get much in the way of bretonnia until next edition, and even then its not like theyll be in the starter so I wouldnt be hoping for much soon.

My absolute pipe dream I wish would be true but doubt it will be - next editions starter is a refresh box that includes new empire state troops and knights vs orc and goblin refresh. I feel like that would actually sell well with new sculpts and be very good for the popularity and health of the game (everyone loves to face orcs or empire).

I would say it would seem to make sense to out chaos in a starter set at some point but given the new marauders are a big new release and I really doubt warriors and knights will get a resculpt I just dont see what they would put in it as "new models" that would be a draw for the set.

This is all assuming they actually are planning on large amounts of new model releases in the future, I mean sure warcry used to get a new plastic box of different themed naked guys with shivs every few months that no one bought but old world or lotr getting regular new plastics? God forbid.
>>
>>96909112
>lotr
I mean i say this respectfully, but who is still playing that? The movie bombed and I dont think anyone actually likes the crossover models of rohan or whatever
>>
>>96909159
Honestly I dropped it and I know a few others who were longtime players who did as well. Used to have a really healthy community with new players joining and large regular events. Its not dead in my area at all but it definitely doesnt feel like its growing.

The new editions core rules are fantastic, it basically covers all the complaints everyone had of the previous edition but unfortunately the switch to only using legendary legions for army lists is god awful, they basically have killed any listbuilding and are terribly balanced, some are absurdly powerful and others are just garbage. It really is amazing that someone can design them so poorly, the imbalance is so obvious.

Moreso the problem with it is that its obvious GW just has it on life support and is basically just trickling in the absolute bare minimum of new sculpts to keep it afloat while releasing new plastic kits for a half dozen random specialist games that all die and are discontinued within a year or two of being released.

People will keep playing lotr just as they did for the decade or so where it was basically not supported at all after the hobbit movies but I cant see it going anywhere dynamic anytime soon.
>>
>>96908966
Sounds dumb, why would they feel jealous if it's ultimately still making them money? unless the budgets are split relative to the department's sales just like the current retardation going on tearing apart the 40k and hh ranges and the aos and tow ranges
>>
>>96909307
They thought the idea of making a book that was just rules without one of their stupid little story campaigns would flop and let the US team do it because it'd be a small project that wouldn't amount to anything like a White Dwarf compilation. Once it started selling out every run they got mad because they thought British should be in charge of main Warhammer rules.

Typical British ego. My brother had worked a retail job at GW around the same time so he and the guy were commiserating how the Brits would make absolutely retarded business decisions and refuse to take advice from Americans about doing business in Amercia. Like the first West Coast GW store being in an outlet mall over 40 minutes away from Seattle because "they got such a good deal on rent". Or the entire reason they switched to the "store run by a single manager who has to close during lunch" model is because they did the same thing in Japan where stores have apartments on the second floor and somehow thought it would work in American strip malls.

The only based factions are EMPIRE and VAMPIRE COUNTS
Runner up are SKAVEN and ORCS

Mid tier is WARRIORS OF CHAOS and HIGH ELVES

Shit tier is DWARVES

ALL other factions can be completely removed the WARHAMMER FANTASY and no one would notice. The factions mentioned above ARE classic Warhammer and the quintessential armies, the entire lore and setting revolves around them. Everyone else is useless freak shit and redundant shit to sell more models
>>
>>96908201

>>
>>96909112
I feel like refreshes will be a slow process in TOW. Having a system for using the old models is definitely part of the appeal, but gosh those new Marauders look nice. They’ll run out of old models to re-release eventually.
>>
>>96910084
you cannot talk about what's quintessential to warhammer and then put generic undead above the original hobbyist faction that is chaos

historical proxies with fantasy elements are part of the foundations
tolkien ripoffs like orcs, elves and dwarfs are part of the foundations
chaos with all the options for conversions are part of the foundations

skaven are perhaps the most truly original and iconic faction while lizards and the conquest of the new world have been genre defining and surprisingly the first explored part of it

undead are generic filler haphazardly slapped on because it felt obligatory to include them and because skeletons are cool, but don't kid yourself about their importance, they're like a holiday special, everything has one, but it doesn't matter
>>
>>96910168
Yeah I think a lot of commentators are waaaay too enthusiastic about what new marauders means. I am absolutely sure theyre gonna start refreshing a lot of very old miniatures but I think its going to be a real slow process and its going to be in bits and pieces rather than entire range refreshes.
