Reading through the Chain of Command rules at work because you guys recommended it as an alternative to Bolt Action, and also because work is really boring today.
Why is this general getting spammed with ugly amerindians and jeets recently? What does the OP pic have to do with WARGAMING?
>>96940700My bad about the fantasy pic btw, I clicked a random pic and from the thumbnail it looked historical
>>96939608I've been looking around the troves but I guess we don't have a scan of the victory games Vietnam 1965-1975, nor the GMT edition. Any kind anon to share the full game or at least a high res of the map of either edition?
After a read through of Chain Of Command: It seems fun, the increased level of detail is nice. My main worry is the support lists mechanic might put off fellow players who may not even get to use their brand new Stuart or whatever.
>>96940700>What does the OP pic have to do with WARGAMING?Hello newfriend, let me explain. /hwg/ often has a picture related to a historical event that took place the same day as the new thread was created. Judging by the date and filename, OP went with Cortés arrival to Tenochtitlan.
>>96941464Follow up questions: Is Chain of Command 2E a significant improvement over 1E? And are there Mid War lists anywhere? I could use something for 1942/43 North Africa.

>>96939608Any game that has mechanics that illustrate this?Often times in medieval and early modern warfare, the more armored and richer members of a unit would be in the front, and the less armored and poorer members would be in the back, so you can present a more heavy front while still bulking out the mass of a formation.I think billhooks might have done something like that? but I think it was with archers and polearms, not sure about more and less armored infantry.it would be a neat way to get a cheaper overall unit that initially has the same fighting power as a full heavy armor unit, but becomes a light armor unit after sustaining casualties or something.

Are there any fun black powder era skirmish games? I want to paint a handful of dudes, 10-15 at most, engaged in minor encounters like pillaging, foraging, fighting for the control over farms etc.
>>96946254Yes, a Song of Drum and Shakos and for slightly earlier there is En Garde. You posted FrancoPrussian war pic, and I don't know anything that explicitly covers that era for skirmish, but the two I posted should work with a little bit of imagination. There frankly isn't many explicit options for the Franco/Prussian war in any size battle, for large battles I've seen people use Valour and Fortitude or Men Who Would be Kings, but the FP War is honestly not wargames very much
Painting 15mm is so fucking unpleasant holy shit, I'm never leaving 28mm again. It's too small to easily paint, but big enough that you notice mistakes unlike 6/10mm

Vichy France actually held off the Americans at Oran long enough for support from Germany to arrive. The Americans are launching an attack anyway, but as they're outnumbered in armor, it's not likely to be a cakewalk.
>>96952391Meanwhile, the British have taken a leaf out of Rommel's book and are attempting a desert hook to avoid and surround Tobruk by launching a flanking attack on Bir Hacheim, but the Italians of all people are responding with a counterattack out of Tobruk into Mersa Matruh, hoping to isolate the 8th Army from Cairo, and the British have actually left themselves open to air attack.
anyone know where i can find historical Mini figures for TTS ? im trying to play Lion Rampant with a friend but i cant find anything to adequately represent historical armies of 1300 AD
>>96941464>My main worry is the support lists mechanic might put off fellow players who may not even get to use their brand new Stuart or whatever. You can always just have a set support point limit rather than rolling for it. If someone wants a Stuart then set the point total to a little above the cost of a Stuart>>969421572e is an objective improvement in my opinion. Many units are better balanced, many rules care better defined and there are a lot more player options with the Chain of Command point system. The only existing rules for North Africa are the 1941 ones in this larger pdfhttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1FkPlKv5rHVZJs-C7JR8UE5QV4Ovzq-5c/view?usp=sharingHowever if you want to pull in units from 1942-1943 then you can use this database of all of themhttps://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1iVO3_AyHeoy87eZQfrl0QN-ZL1e7uvsQSjndzCBokuE/edit?gid=0#gid=0The info is definitely spread out, I would recommend making some sort of document that centralizes the relevant force lists for your theater. Keep in mind that 2e changed the points costs on some units, if that's something that bothers you it would help to cross reference between the 2e book and the provided 1e force lists. You could go full autism like I did and do a complete rebalance of all of the units in your era (1941 Eastern Front for me) but that's a lengthy project. The changes are mostly minor and not worth the full effort unless that sort of thing interests you.
>>96954614Thanks for that info. I didn't see 2E in the trove but will check again or just shell out a few bucks to buy it.

Today, November 11th, Armistice Day, we commemorate the end of the fighting in the Great War.I've taken this opportunity to add several WWI rules to the 'Rick Roll Trove'.
Hey guys I want to get into bolt action but I'm worried about the models themselves. I've heard that some infantry kits can be kinda annoying to assemble because theyre either metal, or the guns are seperate from the hands. Is there any particularly good or easy infantry kits I should get to dip my toes in?
>>96960814>November 11th>No discount on WGA's Great War range.C'est fini.
>>96961182perry or victrix. warlord is trash. or get metals.
>>96961192This is such a weird take: don't use bolt action minis for bolt action. They are fine and getting better allthe time. Put a little PVA on a contact point for a superglued join, it will cure very strongly.>>96961182If anything Warlord are made for wargamers: easy to assemble. As a genera rule don't let autistic nogames cunts invent fake obstacles from you just mucking in and making a start. It's the only way to get good at the hobby. Many people here will be waiting in 5 years for the "perfect" rules or minis when it's a craft and game loop you can have fun starting now.
>>96961585Don't listen to this little jew. Warlord is objectively the worst option for 28mm WW2. You're paying significantly more to get less models of a lower quality. There is 0 benefit to choosing warlord over other 28mm plastic WW2 figures, not a single one. They are all easy to assemble, that is not some special benefit only warlord models have.
>>96961604Except getting a box with terrain, dice and the rulebook. If they are his first run half of them will end up repainted and given to random nephews three times over anyway. Thanks, lunatic
>>96961192>>96961604The Perry and Victrix ranges are very limited. Apart from Warlord, who else makes 28mm plastic figures for World War II?
>>96961651Perry and Victrix are nice and allbut you're correct.
>>96961585Thanks, I'll pick whatever german infantry looks coolest and mess around and see if I like bolt action! I'll have like 30 of the dudes to mess around with anyways.
>>96961604Bullshit. There are less than 10 plastic sets for ww2 infantry if you ignore warlord. If you don't want Italians (wga has a nice set) or veteran Germans (victrix) you have lost. Warlord hate really gets irrational here.
>>96961585>easy to assemblelolthe british infantry I have were terrible to put together, some of the arms didn't even fit properly
>>96961868Do you even hobby?
>>96961817It's just one guy. I think he's shitposting so it's not a big deal.
There are many historical wargames that make for good alternative wargames as well but are there any alternative wargames that beg to be turned into historicals?
>>96943780Nice terrain and minis anon.
>>96961182The metal one I had didn't fit great. The resins are kinda shitty but preassembled anyway. The platoon packs of 30 plastic guys are a dream to put together and a retard could do it in their sleep, I can't imagine a reasonable person taking issue with them. Get the winter fallschirmjager, they have cozy pajamas.
HELLO.Does anyone make M-14 carrying Cold War USA boys in 15mm....That is in stock?I see there is a dead company, but no live ones.Thanks.
>>96960814Victrix German infantry are great. Warlord kits are good (don’t let autists tell you otherwise). Metals aren’t hard to put together, grogs have been doing it for decades. Scrub them with a toothbrush in warm water with a little detergent to get rid of mould release agent, rinse thoroughly, and use a good superglue like zap-a-gap thick with zip-kicker for instant cure, or pinning and 5-minute epoxy if you’re worried.
>>96952394How are you handling force translation between strategic layer and tabletop? Like does one Axis and Allies tank equal X points to spend on armor in Bolt Action or something?
>>96939608Whats a historical game like warhammer fantasy/old word that still has a decent playerbase?Im not exactly sure what it is, but most historical rulesets just dont engage me like old world battle reports do. And I know its not the big cool monsters or magic, cause I like shit like Empire and I find the totally non fantastic elements engaging. Stuff like having indivigual unit removal feels a lot more crunchy and satisfying then just different conditions like disordered, I like the feel and power of artillery, how combat resolution works and the differences between retreat in good order, flee, testing to reform wheeling, etc.
>>96972140Just stick to Warhammer you gayrod. Why are you looking for a historical game when you already have a game you like and have the opportunity to play? Retard alert
I'm building a 1/56th scale HRE army set in the War of the League of Cambrai. It is my understanding that by this time, the crossbow had largely been supplanted by the arquebus as an infantry weapon, however the crossbow was still being used by cavalry likely because it is very difficult to use a matchlock firearm from the back of a horse, and wheellock firearms had yet to gain widespread adoption. I have two questions.1. Is the above statement correct?2. Are these models from Warlord games an accurate representation of "crossbow cavalry" of the time period? I've heard mixed things about the historical accuracy of Warlord's models. If anyone has any sources they could share with me that would be greatly appreciated, the Italian Wars are my autistic special interest right now.Cheers!
>>96973558Do not buy those AWFUL Warlord ones, I was genuinely shocked when those were released. Buy the Perry light cavalry box, it has options to make them mounted crossbowmen and they are both more accurate for early Italian wars and look better
>>96973902Yeah I'm not sure what it is, cause I'm not an expert in 16th century armaments but something about them looks off. I'll check out the Perry sculpts, thanks.
>>96968575So people really hate points imbalance. Instead, I've created a list of Advantages, and I use my judgement to decide who gets one. They're stuff like choosing the scenario type, picking your deployment zone instead of rolling, etc that you can use to tilt the game in your favor within the limits of a standard game, plus some optional stuff from the book like prepatory bombardment. In tonight's game the Italians chose to take minefields as their Advantage. British won anyway due to the Semovente failing an order check and bailing. I toyed with rewarding people for matching the A&A map in terms of platoon types, but several players are new and don't have a deep enough bench to really work with that.
Hello, I'm looking for Lasalle 2nd edition
>>96979212You can find it in one of the Troves
>>96979461I can only find the first edition
>>96972140Maybe look at Never Mind the Billhooks? It's pretty popular, and has individual model removal, cannons, horrible grinding melees, and so on.

>>96959850I went crazy over the last 2 days and batch painted another 10 guys. Here is the LMG team from the second squad, which I am particularly proud of.Now I need to decide if I paint the last 10 Germans in my platoon or paint a Panzer IV as a treat. I lean towards the squad personally, I'm sort of a "eat your meat and potatoes before you get to have dessert" kind of guy.
I've learned about a game called Greathelm and it's given me the excuse to build and paint some Knights, which I wanted to do. Will report back once they're painted and I've tried the game
>>96983085If you do some as Crusaders you could also give them turbans. Just a thought. A lot of the Crusaders went pretty native as an adaptation to the conditions. >>96982392Let's be real, we are /hwg/ because we like lots and lots of infantry. Other games don't have enough regular guys. No matter the period I want lots of light troops.
>>96983501Nah, I'm planning to do these guys up for cold weather to match some snowy terrain i printed and painted for Frostgrave and then only used twice because the Frostgrave group switched to OPR
>>96983501>Let's be real, we are /hwg/ because we like lots and lots of infantry. Other games don't have enough regular guys. No matter the period I want lots of light troops.Amen.
Not baiting or trying to be rude but could someone interested in the period please explain the appeal of viking age Britain? I'm not sure why this time and place is so popular when almost all the different peoples are poor, unarmored and hairy? They're all just poor levy spearmen with a smattering of maile clad nobles or retinue.
Warlord Games put pre-orders for their new Crimean War supplement and boxes on their webstore. There are even new plastic kits but honestly, for the price they ask they are simply too mid. Not even separate heads, quite underwhelming.
>>96987520on the plus side the metal command for the basic infantry are rereleased paul hicks sculpts...that's the only nice thing I can see about this release. Those plastics are poor/boring, and the new metal minis are something that would have barely been acceptable in the nineties, stick to northstar is what i'd tell people, probably vheaper too.
>>96988703Bro, if you're painting 36 man battalions, this is exactly the kind of kit you want.
>>96987447Most minature companies seem to be in Britan, that's an extremely important time, the establishment of England as a unified state and the battles for it soul against the Vikings(and Normans). And Vikings have a general appeal, they are pretty iconic. I'm a pretty big fan of the Migration Era and Dark Ages (Mostly the Goths but also the Anglo-Saxons) for a historical reasons, sure a lot of boring levy which is going to be true for a lot of history, but on more elite or noble troops the armor looks cool, mail, scale, lamellar, styles from the Late Romans, the Germans, and central Asia blending together to find what will work for next few centuries of constant war. And for minatures I personally find it more interesting than typical Imperial Roman or post Enlightenment where everyone is basically wearing the same thing and it'd hard to give a figure a personality. But it's all subjective.
My friends and I have just got into Saga and played a few battles. I'm not sure if we quite have the rules right. Are fights supposed to end very quickly or is there meant to be a lot of back and forth?
any 6mm guys in here? looking for ideas on how to do trees. I've seen many guides and have a few in mind but I wanted to get some personal experiences with whats worked for different people. I value durability more than aesthetics
>>96990859I've only played one game of Saga but it was pretty fast play and bloody.
>>96990864Alright then, maybe we did play it right. It just felt a bit odd. My opponent charged me with his cavalry, both units took about 75% casualties then just stared at each other until the game ended. Felt... A bit odd I guess but if that's the game then that's the game.
>>96987447I find the raiding elements of that period really fascinating, as well as the differing social structures between Britain and the Nordics.>>96990861I make big blocks of trees, which are literally black foam with flock attatched to them at the top, with cocktail sticks in the bottom to make a big canopy/ area of woodland, see pic related.
>>96991920>make big blocks of treesIn a world where everything is rectangular.Table tiles, units bases, houses, forests and fields... like in a 90s video game.
>>96990733Hmm, the migration period is a lot more interesting. You have a multitude of diverse empires, peoples and tribes that all offer distinct playstyles. Even the Germanic tribes have interesting cavalry, the British isles are just hairy dudes in rags forming shieldwalls. There's an appeal, I like it too but I think it's far too popular for what it offers.
>>96992765>Hmm, XXX period is a lot more interesting.Des propos stupides au plus haut point!Chaque période est interressant des lors qu'on la curiosité de se pencher dessus et de faire l'effort de s'informer.Les idiots ont les préjugés de l'ignorance et balancent des propos lapidaires, bêtes et erronés.
>>96993205in EnglishUtterly stupid remarks!Every period is interesting as long as you have the curiosity to delve into it and make the effort to learn more.Idiots are prejudiced by ignorance and spout terse, foolish, and erroneous statements.
>>96993205Why were you offended? I said I liked the period even if I don't see why it has such massive appeal to others.
>>96990859Mate since you already have the appropriate miniatures just play Pillage instead of Saga. Saga is getting quite dated and was frankly never that good to begin with
>>96995033Another anon, would you recommend Pillage over Barons War or Loins Rampant?I haven't played yet, I'm just buying and painting figures. But right I'm leaning towards Dragon/Lion Rampant since unlike Saga you can basically play as any civilization/culture if you have minatures. And the rules look pretty easy. Maybe it's a plus for others, but I don't think I like the battle board and having to remember each country's special powers.
>>96995033I'll pitch it to the lads. We are enjoying Saga, playing it correctly or not, so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch.
>>96992765>let's rank historical eras for wargamingLet's wargame historical eras instead and share our experiencesDark age Britain is cool>controversial pointPlain Levy who look like they would rather be farming armed with slings are rad. If you can get them to do anything>>96997473Saga always struck me as very board gamey and maybe a bit too abstract. But then I like Lion Rampant too and that's just a basic game you can play with friends that scales up to bigger battles surprisingly well. Most of the blue books from Osprey only have a smidgin of historical flavour and some kind of random leader progression but the simplicity scales up so nice if you want a 30p game or even 36p
>>96997473Barons War and Pillage are both good games but they're pretty much set in one specific time period, so if depending on what era of minis you playing it might be best to do Lion Rampant
>>96943288Warhammer ancients actually has this, at least in the "Wars of chivalry" book where you can have a mixed knight and mounted yeoman unit
>>96993205French is a tricky language and you betrayed yourself as a FSL. Don't know what you were trying to do.
>>96939608OK, here is my interpretation of a prototypical english army battle formation of the later 100 years war (c.1400-1450). Representing things like Agincourt, Verneuil, and Patay. Im pretty dang confident in all parts but 1. At the center are the dismounted men at arms and accompanying lighter retainers who hold the advance of the opponent and grind them down. They are screened in front by a light scattering of missles, primarily longbowmen, but a few crossbowmen as well. On either flank are deeper units of foot longbowmen who provide the bulk of the disruptive fire, protected by something, either a part of the terrain (like agincourt), or constructed barricades like stakes (like Verneuil). At the far left is a unit of mounted longbowmen, who would often dismount to fire, but thier primary role is to scout ahead and pressure the opponent to advance (like Agincourt). At the rear is the commanders unit of remaining heavy cavalry men at arms, who will either dismount and join the melee if required (again like agincourt), or be prepared to pursue routed enemies (like Verneuil). The one thing I mentioned being unsure of is the lighter retainers. Most sources seem to just mention "Men at arms" when it comes to the static melee troops at the time, but I am pretty sure that most well equipt men at arms often had a lighter satellite fighter who supported them in melee battle a la squire or sergeant in addition to an archer who would join the rest of the archer formations (Lance usually being 1 man at arms, 1 lighter spear man, 1 archer, and 2 non combatant helpers). But I dont hear much about these lighter melee troops. So when a battle says "1000 men at arms" IDK if that means 1000 men total, or 1000 supported by another 1000 ish lighter spearmen.>>96998628oh, neat! that reminds me of a rule in Warhammer Old World where some beastmen units can have a mix of gor and ungor in their unit.

>>97000481Yeah torse has been a thing since the high middle ages, but we don't see any example is the spiral lance until the tail end of the late middle ages in continental europe. The majority of lance before this were obviously unpainted, as your lance wasn't typically expected to last more than once charge, but there are some examples of a few being painted single colors like red or blue

>>97002863Very nice work anon. What's the army list?
>>97003206The list is currently under scrutiny from myself, I’m a little torn between full historical accuracy and smaller units for more dice/manoeuvring so I keep changing it. Have only played 1 game so far, so I lack game knowledge. Here’s what it looks like so far, keep in mind I haven’t done a deep dive on 3rd army building rules and am going off of what I know if 2nd edition, it’s the edition my group is starting with. If people here have more experience, let me know if this list looks fun to go up against/is insanely reality breaking and will take you out of the experience.1000 points,>Regular First Officer w/ rifle, regular soldier w/ rifle>Infantry squad w/ 4 riflemen, 1 LMG man>Infantry squad w/ 4 riflemen, 1 LMG man>Infantry squad w/ 4 riflemen, 1 LMG man>Veteran squad w/ 1 smg man, 3 assault rifle soldiers, 3 riflemen, 3 panzerfausts>Veteran squad w/ 1 smg man, 3 assault rifle soldiers, 3 riflemen, 3 panzerfausts>Regular Hanamag halftrack>Regular Hanamag halftrack >Regular Panzer IV I am insane and take everything in multiples, points allowing. I think I have extra points for an extra riflemen in each of the LMG squads also.
>>97003501So in 3rd you'll need two armoured vehicles. One as the platoon commander and one as... Well a tank. You can bring a motorcycle for this role or, my favourite, an SDKFZ 222. And in terms of infantry you can have a maximum of 4 in a rifle platoon so you might need to merge some squads together.
>>97003501The rifle platoon requirement look like this
>>97003501And the armoured one like this. So your list would need two platoons, a rifle one and an armoured one.

I am not finding the ADLG v4 pdf anywhere, except for an italian version that I saw somewhere. Does anyone have it? Are there many/relevant changes or is it basically the same? I'm guessing there was a fair bit of change to some lists as well.Additionally, for a more flavorful game, does anyone have the updated lists for To the Strongest? The ones on the Trove are from 5 years ago, I think, and many have been edited substantially and the author has added multiple new ones.
>>96983085I'm in the same boat, been wanting to do up a handful of knights and this game seems like a great excuse.I know I want to do one warband of Teutonic Knights but was hoping some people more familiar with the period could point me to some other orders or groups that might be fun to paint up.
>>96983085QRD on Greathelm? what kind of game is it and what makes it unique?>>97005611No expert, but the big 4 most relevant orders to my knowledge areTemplarsHospitallersTeutonic andSantiagobut there are a number of smaller ones like st lazerus. I thought a cool idea would be to make a unit of st Lazarus knights completely aflicted with leprosy, bandages and all, since they were specifcially known for taking care of lepers.
>>97005611>>97005745One other thing. I have had the idea for a while now to make a 15mm c.1200 army thats like 2/3rds common feudal units, then like 1/3rd elite Knightly order units. The feudal units will have a veriety of liveries and colors and be more ununifirm, but they will contrast starkly with the very regimented and uniform knightly order units. Something like 4 spearmen units, 3 crossbow units, 2 heavy cav units, 1 light cav unit. With 1 of those spearman, crossbow, and heavy cavalry units being knightly order.I got to finish my 28mm hundred year war collection first though.
>>96987447>>96992765>hairy dudes in rags forming shieldwallsThat's a pretty reductive way of looking at it. I think vikings in general have always had a really prominent place in pop culture, so it's only natural there'd be a demand for them in miniature wargaming. Personally, I think the viking age is really misunderstood. What initially intrigued me about the era was reading and learning how many popular conceptions about the vikings are flat out wrong, and how much more complicated and dynamic the time was than how most modern people imagine it. I'm sure this is true of literally any historical period. Pick a time and place, start reading (actually good) history books about it, and you'll turn up with really interesting shit. As for your question, I'm an absolute amateur but I'm passionate (aren't we all?) and I'll do my best in a following post.>>96990859Saga is very high lethality and plays best in 4-8 rounds. If someone likes Saga I don't think they'll necessarily like Pillage.
>>96987447>>96992765>>97005851>What do I think is cool about Viking Age Britain? The Viking Age is a lot more than just the British Isles, which I'm sure you're well aware of, but even if we stick to the British Isles from (roughly) 750 to 1050 AD you have a period of history that is every bit as dynamic as the Migration era (in fact, I'd argue it's just the direct continuation of that period). England starts off being full of countless petty kingdoms of various sizes (the Heptarchy) that over time consolidates into fewer, larger kingdoms. It's a period of constant warfare and negotiation at varying scales, from local feuds and cattle raids to decisive pitched battles between massed armies. There's plenty of trade and interaction with the Carolingians in France. The islands, recently Christianized, are now an object of interest to the Catholic Church which is trying to consolidate its control over Saxon bishops and establish centralized ecclesiastic infrastructure. Prospective Saxon kings can stand to benefit from this, but they may also chafe at allowing the Church more and more authority within their kingdoms. At the same time, you have the Viking incursions which begin in earnest but escalate into a greater and greater threat- they grow larger, more organized, and by the mid viking age are landing in massed armies looking to take and hold territory. However, they can be negotiated with: paid off with Danegeld, hired as mercenaries, even traded lucratively with as the seafaring Norse had established trade routes that could bring in exotic prestige goods (not the *only* people doing this, but having more access to international trade is always good).1/3
>>97005870cont.While we're at it, the Norse didn't just land in boats, light stuff on fire, and carry off people's ships. In time, they began to settle in some areas- in one place they might intermarry and integrate with local society, in another place they might form a polity that's independent of the Saxon kingdoms. This Norse colonization was happening in a greater extent around the outlying islands like the Shetlands, Orkneys and Hebrides, as well as in Ireland. Politically, this is a *very* complex time and place, with lots of different people from different cultures with different goals all interacting and maneuvering around one another. There's political changes in Scandinavia too, where just like in the British Isles there's powerful kings consolidating and kicking out their rivals-- losers of these dynastic wars often sailed West for the Isles, settling wherever they may and trying to start anew, adding new faces and agents in the power struggles there. The winners, those Scandinavian kings who managed to expand and consolidate kingdoms of the Danes, Norwegians, Swedes etc.-- they would also have a vested interest in England, either as a place from which to collect tribute to fund their wars of expansion, or as a core part of their dream of empire. Canute the Great was a Danish king who briefly ruled over Norway, Denmark, and England (and spent much of his rule struggling to actively hold on to it). And, of course, within Scandinavia you also have increasing Christianization (largely driven by those same kings, who stand to benefit from both legitimizing themselves to other Christian European powers and using the centralized religious infrastructure the Catholic church offers to consolidate their rule).2/3
>>97005883cont.In a nutshell, the Viking Age is very complicated, very dynamic, and involves lots of different groups of people with lots of different goals. It's a very mobile period with people traveling surprisingly long distances with some regularity-- people didn't just sit in one place and feud or trade with the same neighbors over and over and over again. There's lots of different cultures developing and interacting with each other in really fascinating ways. There's a pretty direct continuum of the scale and shape at which fighting occurs: there's armed feuds between neighbors, there's ambushes and raids where the goal is to get in, grab the loot / steal the cattle / kill your nemesis / burn their hut down and get out, there's martial cultures that prize individual valor and encourage ritualized duels between champions, there's pitched dynastic battles between kings, there's waves of conquest and colonization, there's trade and spies and mercenaries, there's unlikely alliances between totally different cultures and there's ancient feuds between people of the same faith/tribe/clan/etc. There's really fertile ground to come up with fun scenarios in a variety of settings between a variety of peoples over a variety of objectives at a variety of scales. Sure, you can reduce that to hairy dudes in rags forming shield walls- but at the end of the day, that just isn't the whole picture of the period, no matter how you cut it.This still might not sound remotely interesting to (you). Dfferent strokes for different folks, and all. This very thread has someone painting medieval knights, another guy who painted a platoon of WW2 german infantry, and someone talking about 2mm scale Napoleonics. We all like different stuff, but at the end of the day we're all nerds who like (some) part of history and just really want to play out whatever our pet era is.3/3
>>97005851>hairy dudes in rags forming shieldwallsnta, but although the larger politico-social situation might be interesting, I dont find the material realities, especially those surrounding warfare, all that interesting compared to earlier roman stuff or later medieval stuff.
>>97006133I'm not trying to persuade anyone that this era is cool, because that's entirely subjective. I'm just pushing back on the assertion that the Viking Age has nothing substantial to offer in terms of historical wargaming, and I'm also taking the opportunity to talk about what I love about the period. On material culture: maturally the armor is simpler and rarer compared to the later medieval period, and the archeological record from this area is dim, but what finds we do have fascinate me. Pic related is a reconstruction of an 8th century (IIRC) helmet found at Valsgarde, Sweden. The spectacle helm is a unique, distinct style and I love how it looks when paired with the maille aventail, to say nothing of how the helm is richly decorated with stamped plates. I could go on about what I love about that imagery but it would rapidly peer off topic. These pieces of prestige armor and weapons would be incredibly rare, as well as tremendous status symbols: likely why out of all the (very few) finds we have, they seem disproportionately well decorated. It makes armored infantry feel much more impressive and threatening. The lighter armor leads to an increased reliance on the round fighting shield, something I find much more fascinating than the greater reliance on polearms and longswords of the later medieval, and the panoply of weapons common in the time (shortswords, axes of varying lengths, spears of varying styles, seaxes, etc) are still fascinating to me. I suppose it's an aesthetic all its own, visually distinct from earlier and later periods. Hurstwic had a lot of articles and images about how these weapons were actually produced at the time and I think being able to visualize that rudimentary, yet still highly skilled process, tickles my imagination. The Norse ships were also technological marvels of their time, and the element of maneuver they add to campaigns and raids is fascinating, and something left behind in the transition to cogs and galleys.
>>97006133The issue that comes up with shieldwall battles (rather than skirmishes or raids) is you can either have a game that is accurate or one that is fun.
>>97006512I'd go out on a limb and say this is true of almost all historical wargaming. Pre-modern generals had very little command and control during the battle itself. All the resources we have seem to indicate that truly great generals mostly excelled at Operational level successes, rather than Tactical level ones. They were great leaders and managers of men, able to keep morale and cohesion high through adversity, able to muster and march their armies to arrive at the fight in good order- and maybe on favorable terms. They would lay out their forces and plan as best as they could, but once the battle began, things were largely out of their hands. Furthermore, the very act of wargaming puts you in a top-down perspective over your units where you're aware of every part of the battle and can instantaneously communicate orders and intent to any part of the board. No historical general, no matter how competent, *ever* had this perspective. Some games try to implement fog of war, command friction, etc.- but the very act of getting to look at pieces on a board and move each as you please puts you in a vastly different position.IMO, premodern wargaming can never be realistic for a number of reasons. This is true for the medieval period, it's true for the viking period, the classical period, antiquity, etc. It can still be evocative and fun and can help us connect with history, but even at it's most simulationist it's never going to be truly realistic. I think the hobby has already grappled with the 'fun vs realism' problem and sided with fun since its very inception. Link related.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_UIRw9GddA
>>97005555It's literally in the OP
>>97006582super realism might not have a lot of control, but you can still apreciate the broader sense of combined arms in large combats.Weither that be handweapon and shiled-pike- skirmishers-cavalry of ancients, light infantry-heavy infantry-hevay cav-light cav of medieval, or artillery-infantry-cavalry of early modern.
>>97006604That's ADLG v3, with William the Conqueror on the cover. I believe v4 has Pyrrhus on the cover (or is it Antiochos III?)
>>97006789Naturally, anon. There's plenty to love about medieval or napoleonic wargaming as well. If your argument is those eras and theaters have more unit variety, I'd certainly agree with you. I think I'd like to add to my earlier post >>97006582 that, with the sources we have available, we don't have a very clear image of viking age mass battles at all, such that trying to create a "realistic" viking age mass battle wargame is likely not even possible. However, I do believe that these combats were likely more than just two 'shield walls' pushing against each other (frankly, I think the idea of Viking age forces always fighting from a shield wall is inaccurate). To put it simply, there is a lot that we do not and cannot know about the Viking Age. Personally, I think this underlying mystery is what I find so interesting about the period. It allows for no shortage of 'what-ifs', for experimentation and exploration, of creating different models for how combat *might* have happened and seeing how it aligns with the existing resources.
>>97006480nah, I totally get the interest for the period, I had a pretty involved viking phase as well, especially when it comes to literature (read prose&elder edda, volsunga, erik the red, and frithiolfs saga, ofc a lot of those were written later in the the 1200’s, but a lot of the story origins are from or before the viking period). though also the visual design elements like weaving abstract patterns and animal integration are also intriguing.>and the element of maneuver they add to campaigns and raids is fascinating, and something left behind in the transition to cogs and galleys.idk about this part. I think it might just be that there is less of a mythology surrounding high medieval naval warfare for some reason. there was rather frequant smaller navel raids and larger ship battles (like Sluy) throughout the 100 years war. but for some reason its very much not a part of the popular imagination.I personally, at least in terms of wargamming, prefer the c. 1000-1200 period, since you have a lot of clashing military styles. Normano-french, anglo-norse, byzantine, arabic, etc.

The issue is, my models are very much themed around the Liberation of the Philippines, and my preliminary research seems to show that the T97 20mm Automatic Cannon might have been removed from service by that point. Can anyone recommend any resources that would cover armaments used by the Japanese in the Philippines in 44/45? Since it was a gift, I'd really hate for it to be ahistorical.

>>97005936Ye, the history is extremely interesting but the miniature wargaming one is slightly less so. Now, I do actually like the period and minis but there are other parts of the times that have more varied opponents that would offer more varied wargaming. Sadly those lack miniatures most of the time since every British manufacturer has a genetic need to have their own dark ages range.

Hi, it's me again. Few days ago I asked about rules for 1:1 Napoleonic in 2mm. After review some answer in this thread and other forums I found some compeling rulesets. However I came with conclusion that at maximum I would be only able to play brigade vs brigade games with around 12 battalions per side on standard 6'x4' table, assuming 1''=25 yards and one battalion in line occupies around 6'' in width. 6 feet in this scale (1:890) comes to around 1 mile IRL. Most battles in Napoleonic era were fought in area far greater than that (3 miles at least)Those games would not allow for any maneuverability really. It's a problem because that was one of the reasons for me wanting to start playing at 2mm - having a large map to finally consider flanks, maveuvers, reservers and 'marching into battle' as a part of the game. Also I don't really want to abandon the idea of 1 to 1 scale. So here's the question for y'all>What's the best period in warfare for 2mm 1:1 on 6'x4' table?>NapoleonicNapoleonic can only be played on regiment level or brigade at most. I would need additional tables for larger battles. The problem is that the strategy at the time was to fight one giant decisive battles. Sure I can play some skrimishes and smaller fights, but that's not the point of Napoleonic, is it?Or am I overthinking it and there were plenty of battles fought at regiment and brigade scale?
>>97032442I have 4 28mm figures representing a battalion on a 30x60mm base and my lovemaking is unparalleled.
>>97032442cont.>AncientA very long and large era. The question is which period would be the most interesting for campaign. Did I mention that I want to do campaigns?Anyway, If one french brigade was around 2,000 to 3,000 men and it would occupy majority of 6'x4' table then there's gonna be a problem with antiquity because for instance roman legion was around 5,000 man.I assume the density per unit was far greater because battles likes Gaugamela or Cannae could actually fit unto 6'x4' table if map on the internet are correct.I also fought about Peloponnesian Wars because it's sounds fantastic for a campaign.>Other XIXth century warsI was thinking about Crimean Wars but I don't know how large of a battles there were (beside the huge ones). Maybe some other war in that period? It would be like Napoleonic but with maybe more opportunities for smallers battles that would fit unto 6'x4' table
>>97032442>Napoleonic can only be played on regiment level or brigade at most. I would need additional tables for larger battles. The problem is that the strategy at the time was to fight one giant decisive battles.During Napoleonic era, battles of all sizes took place, and you can even recreate specific phases of major engagements. But at the regiment/brigade level, you'll need to represent and simulate skirmishers. Good luck with 2mm miniatures and your foolish individual representation.
>>97029269IDK why but it looks cool as fuck.
>>97032442I've said this before in this general, but the best period to play 1:1 is the French and Indian War. It has all the flavour in black powder era rulesets but most "big" battles had like 1000 dudes, even the major sieges
>>97033091The Battle of the Plains of Abraham pitted 20,000 French against 4,000 British. But this war involved many small units and loose order fights, which is not easy to manage with rice grains.

>>97034201Yes, British Victory.As usual.
>>97020950>>97021253Noice!>>97021023I'm painting the basic US infantry at the moment, they're pretty good except there are far too few M1 Garand rifles on the sprues...no surprise for Bolt Action, but still annoying. Also painting a few Empress metal Voksgrenadiers...the difference is noticeable, the Warlord figures really are gorillas.>>97022601I would get the newer figures, the old plastic figures were not great: separate weapons to glue in hands is really annoying.
>>96946254legends of the old west plus the alamo sourcebook have everything you could need, rules for small gangs and bigger battles.
>>96939608Bought the Crimean russians from warlord, waited years for hoping for new releases, finally get them and they are woeful. And whose bright idea was it to do monopose infantry without even head options!? I could forgive the rest of the boxed set as the command is classic paul hicks goodness...just why?
>>97036385>warlord You fell for it again
>>97036403Sorta, id always been hoping that any stuff that did eventually come out was something made in its better days then broken out in between bolt action/flavour of the month game releases...I was wrong.Used to love warlord, nowadays some of its releases are embarrassing, the recent swiss troops are some of the worst minis I have ever seen, warlord should be ashamed to have put them out into the world. The hobby as a whole is lessened by their existence.
>>97036495The Swiss miniatures are genuinely at such a low standard it's absolutely absurd they were posting pics of them front page. The sculpts are genuinely like amatuer hobbyist learning to sculpt in his garage tier, and the craziest part was the paint jobs were just as bad, much worse than the usual Warlord standard of painting which is already terrible

>>97039512Mate, a report came out that 1 in 9 schools in the UK had ZERO native white British students. Over 1 in 3 babies born in the UK have foreigner parents. If you complain about any of this publicly online the police knock on your door with an arrest warrant. The UK went from the largest and most powerful empire in human history to a weak and submissive state where you get jailed for carrying a spreading knife in your pocket. Let's face it, you don't have the right to talk about British Victories. The British are history's biggest loser.
>>97039944Britain also jails you for protesting Israel lmao. I genuinely don't understand that schizo state.
>>97039512I'm the anon you're replying to, and yeah, it is. I'm not complaining about the Empire ruling the waves, I'm complaining about their pisspoor job at reporting history. It's a good thing Quebec lost at Abrahams. You look at any former French colony and there's 0 first world power where English have USA, Canada, Australia and NZ. Even today you can still very clearly tell which African countries were under British rule and which ones were under French rule by economic factors alone.
>>97039944Unironically, is there even a single GOOD thing about living in the UK nowadays? Pure dystopia
>>97039944You say this like its different from France. Everything is relative and in this case its not exactly relevant. Also, it boggles me how often france can just squeeze by historically by the inertia of its relitively large population, while repeatedly failing miserably at combat. Think napoleon and sun king were the only exceptions, and in the former it even tually lost and only survived os that the other powers could retain balance and in the later it was a slow fuck expensive grind to expand France like 40 miles east.
>>97040294Nigga how can you be this historically illiterate and post in /hwg/. France has a significantly better military track record throughout history than Britain, with the majority of the UKs success being against third world colonial tribes fighting with sticks and stones. The British are obsessed with talking about Agincourt, Crécy, Waterloo, etc. because those are the few significant victories they had against the French while the rest of history is just them getting curbstomped by the frogs. The only reason Britain wasn't completely dominated by the French ages ago is because they have an extremely fortunate geographic defense as their one and only saving grace. You know what's funny is how the British are constantly seething about the French and comparing themselves, whereas the French don't think about the British at all. That really tells you all you need to know. Not French btw
>>97040554No, that's a rather stupid view to have. British armies and soldiers performed extremely well against European foes throughout history. France and GB were simply titans for most of history, the two world wars simply broke their power for good.t. Swede
>>97040554>France has a significantly better military track record throughout history than Britainok lets see.ok lets see>Normans were pretty good admittedly>absolutely butblasted throughout HYW in straight up fights, mostly won due to political machinations in burgundy and England.>Spent all its resources in the italian wars, ended up with diddly for it>Sun kings expansion was successful and got some area to the east, lucritive ones too, but also largely through a stupid amount of money sink>Failed in war of spanish succession>Failed in 7 years war>Flopped around impotently during the begining of the french revolution>Napoleon wasobviously successful>Then got completely conquered and continued to exist for political expediency>conquered a bunch of north africa and some south east asia>Buttfucked in franco-prussia>Smashed its head against the wall in wwi and bitched because they died so much (not because how successful they were cause they werent) they should have got more>Buttfucked again in wwiiAm I missing any other major engagements with powers? There are some early modern period stuff im not as familiar with. Again, the two campaigns against euro powers I remember them being successful in was under sun king and Napoleon.
>>97040916Oh I guess I forgot to mention the Normans as a third success in that ending paragraph. I think they were thoroughly culturally French and Norse ancestry is mostly a meme to mention. I guess I could also mention the cultivation of interior power for a bit after the battle of bouvines as well in the 1200s.
>>97040916>Cope, cope, more copeKekAll your little meltie proved is that central European Germanic bvlls have always been the chads of European history >Normans Germanics won>HYW You're coping, Brits only remember the 3 or so battles that they actually won, French dominated >Italian WarsGermanics won >Napoleon Germanics won >Franco-PrussiaGermanics won >WW1Cope, total French Victory. >>97040951>brithongs utterly btfo at Dunkirk, hid in sewers like rats until rescued by burgersI always get a laugh out of this. Brits are always bragging about WW2 but they absolutely lost to the Germans. The only difference between the British and French defeat is that the British had an island to slink back to and the French didn't
>>97040966>>97040951Really should make you think if two of the most famous british ww2 "victories" are actually defeats, i.e. market garden and dunkirk.

Since we're on the subject of Dunkirk, look at the incompetence of Battlefront with the release of their new early-war starter sets:https://www.battlefront-community.com/article/early-war-returns-to-flames-of-war/A 'Maginot Line' starter set for the French, even though the fighting on the Maginot Line was minimal and didn't involve any armored division.A 'Dunkirk' starter set, even though the bulk of the fighting in this British victory was conducted by the French.

>>97040951>You're coping, Brits only remember the 3 or so battles that they actually won, French dominatednah, even in minor battles the english tended to win in the 100 years war.

>>97043300The philipine insurrection and Iraq
>>97041018Weird framing. It's two early war starter sets. Pretty good selection of those vehicles that have an interwar look and feel, and the Germans are arguably pretty iconic in Grey. The Early War the Allies sre reeling, there are some successful counter attacks but things don't turn around until North Africa, Greece and attacking the USSR.That's how it was. Then later war the Germans are totally on the backfoot, the US is in the war and despite some pretty tough breakouts and pockets of resistance, Germany is dragged to total defeat. I'm not trying to give you a history lesson in the obvious, but outside Bolt Action listbuilding people really like being able to portray those different phases.Do I personally care that Highlanders in the Peninsular War wore mostly tartan trousers? No, I'll use what I've got.>>97040951Britain's strike rate from about Malborough's time to Omdurman is pretty fantastic and pre civil strife things like defeating the Spanish Armada, Flodden, then Henry V' campaign also stand out. Britain's main error was in overcorrecting colonial uprisings, but you can't beat endless fire drill, rum and limes, roast beef and really uncomfortable leather stocks that force you to look ahead lol. And the sailing. France is a cool guy I guess. I rooted for the Tuareg

>>97007177>with the sources we have available, we don't have a very clear image of viking age mass battles at all, such that trying to create a "realistic" viking age mass battle wargame is likely not even possible.Though we might not have 19th century tier doccumentation, we do have a broader picture of how they fought right? I havent done too much study in the specifics of our knowledge but going from the accounts of the battle of stamford bridge to the battle of hastings You can very much apreciate that the scandinavian-saxon way of war was much more melee infantry focused than the norman way of combined infantry melee cavalry and infantry archers. The exact specificly of HOW they fought may not be known, but the supremicy of massed heavy infantry formations with only lightsupport of missle and cavalry seems to be well established. And they seem to have fought in singular large masses rather than in various detachments like the romans. At least that is my impression. In my uninformed opinion "sheild wall" is just a fancy term to describe dense infantry, not an actual particular technique. Not signifigantly different then the romans or Franks or anyone for that matter that had relevant heavier infantry.

Are there any good platoon level Vietnam games suitable for 28mm minis, like 50 or so dudes a side? Was given some from Rubicon as a gift. I usually prefer lighter casual Lardies style stuff as opposed to simulation games
>>97056475I'm this guy and >>96943780>>96942584I collect pretty much nothing but Vietnam If you want good platoonlevel Nam rules what you do is you take Troops Weapons and Tactics (The Platoon level version of IABSM) and then read Charlie Don't Surf (the Vietnam version of IABSM) and merge them into one system like I did . Or take fistful of lead and just homebrew. As someone whose tried every Platoon level Vietnam war rules he could find, most of them are stinkers. >>97066641Yes, only three per sprue...a squad should have 11x M1 Garands. The new sets don't have open hands for rifles, so you have no arms/hand to fit them in. I just had to get a second box of US Infantry (went Rangers for a few different head options) and stripped it of the rifles. It's for a commission anyway, but still damned annoying.
