You ever have many dwarven women in your games? Should they have beards?
>>
>>97009877
Dwarven women in my games do indeed have beards. In part, this is because dwarves in my setting have Eimer's organs around their mouths.

No they should not have beards because I can't get my rocks off to female dwarves with beards.

>Breath
Well, yeah. The entire point is it lets your martial clear up trash mobs. It's genuinely not meant for casters, that's why they went as far to give it a specific rule for extra attack. It was never meant to be good vs 1 or 2 targets
>Resistance
Poison has the most outright immunities. Cold and fire are more resisted than most other elements, but not to the point I'd call them outright dogshit. There's a reason people still take spells and subclasses that use them as damage types, but all the ones that use poison are considered completely dead features.
>Flight
It's a single fight or a single scene, I don't see much wrong with that. The way you're wording it makes it sound like 1 minute flight is somehow better when it's objectively worse, namely out of combat. Having flight for an entire section/encounter/scene where you need it is quite good, even if only once a day

Would you accept a published adventure or supplement that didn't use the official 5e stat blocks with the tan background and lines and everything? Would you accept a normal text document in black and white? Or is the stat block that instrumental to you being able to make quick use of them while running the game?
>>
>>97010187
I will say that you're right about lines though. Cones aren't that hard to line up, but lines have got to be the worse form of AoE ever. You just have to accept you'll almost never get more than 2 targets with one
>>
>>97010197
I reference all of my statblocks from 5etools and keep them in a word doc for easy access during session. The format is perfectly fine, but I do like being able to adjust the shape of the block in 5etools. As long as it follows the organization and layout, I'd be fine with it. Tome of Beasts doesn't use the tan.

I guess I just don't see it. The breath has way too high of an opportunity cost alot of the time. I remember crunching the numbers and comparing them against a median for DEX save vs. Monster CR and you were almost always just better off swinging your weapon as a martial.
I understand, yeah, it isn't meant to be used versus one or two targets, but if you consider how alot of modules and DMs like to design encounters, you usually dont have alot of little trash mobs. Even if you do, most casters in your party will handle them.
To me it's comparing DBs to stuff like Goliaths and Aasimar where their racials are way more flexible (Aasimar) or just much more consistent in execution (Goliath).
The bar for a racial shouldnt be "Its passable when all these conditions line up AND the dice rolls in my favor" or "Its good if I fight this one specific flavor of enemy." Thats a shitty fucking racial.
I know Ive brought up Fizban Metallics but at least their Metal Breath, risky as it was, had massive potential if the NPC bombed the save because of the status effects you could dish out.
The flight I'll just agree to disagree. To me its in this weird limbo of "too long for combat" but "not long enough for out of combat cool stuff."
If they were the ONLY race that gained flight (outside of like, aarakocra) maybe I'd be more lenient, but I look at Aasimar and you see all the flat out good stuff thats almost always relevant, no stupid hoops to jump through.
Light? Always good.
Archon Mode? Always good.
Healing Touch? Always good.
Resistances? A bit niche but its okay cause everything else is consistent to make up for that.

Besides that, the different ancestries have no identity outside of their damage, which is lame as fuck. Different Goliath and Tiefling and Elf Ancestries have fun little quirks to make them feel unique. A chromatic and metallic DB have literally no difference. Its so lazy and boring, especially when they had a blueprint with Fizbans and maybe minor tweaks
>>
How much spellcasting does an effective non-munchkin "optimized" Ranger do? Are Conjure Barrage and Lightning Arrow and such worthwhile when a full caster can throw out Fireballs for days by that point?
>>
>>97010943
The Ranger-specific spells are pretty terrible, but you still want to do a fair amount of spellcasting. Typically focusing on some of the better Druid spells you have access to.
You might get them later than Druid, but they're still more effective than trying to spend your slots on extra damage.

Let’s say I want to play a Berserker Barbarian (2024 5e) and I’m currently level 4. Would you recommend taking the Resilient feat? I know there are better feats for dealing more damage, but I feel like the Berserker subclass already does enough on its own, and I think Resilient is pretty important against enemy casters.
I’m also asking because the Berserker gets Mindless Rage at level 6, which makes you immune to being charmed and frightened. I have 12 Wisdom.
>>
>>97011265
Resilient is a solid feat that helps add to your defenses. If you took DEX resilience, you'd have proficiency in all physical saves. It's a solid choice fitting for a class that doesn't do much in combat besides frontlining.

You guys were talking about the Breath Weapons and Damage Resistance but you didn't bring up the Gem Dragonborn variety. Their Breath Weapon is great because how often are you going to run into enemies with resistance to Necrotic, Psychic or Thunder damage. You'll practically be bullying mobs for most of your campaign. This also leads into the issue of you almost never facing off against creatures that deal that kind of damage for your Damage Resistance to kick in and once you do it'll likely be during higher levels which by then your resistance won't matter too much. Now they do get Flight and Psionic Mind which is useful and personally feel like they're almost tied with Metallics as having something good going for them
Chromatic Dragonborns on the other hand are comically dogshit. Their big racial ability is gaining complete immunity to their Chromatic Ancestry. On paper that sounds amazing but in practice it runs into the same problem as your typical Damage Resistance, how often is it actually going come in handy. Not enough to warrant picking Chromatic over Metallic and Gems
What I'm trying to say is that by pigeon-holing Dragonborns with just Breath Weapons as their "thing" it can lead to a lack of options that aren't tailored for very specific encounters
I think it would actually really help if each type of Dragonborn like Gold, Black and Amethyst came with their own cantrip and ability along with acknowledging that Dragonborns should have Natural Armor and Powerful Build by default . Half of the 2024 races got a cantrip AND their own spells anyway

>Tiefling
Tiefling ancestries have some of the most boring race design in the entire game. I might commit murder-suicide on the devs if I see another race whose cool and unique feature is "you can cast 2 or 3 spells once per day, and if you're a caster they're on your list :)"

Regardless, I definitely think there are stronger and more consistent races, but I wouldn't rank newer dragonborn variants as outright bad. They're decent-at-worst IMO
>>

Women dwarves having beards might make things more comical, so the mileage may vary. If I was DMing I'd have them beardless.

Is this level of profanity accurate to a character in D&D? Would you suggest any alternative D&De or historical profanity I could use instead? Context: This is basically an internal self-loathing monologue and yes, the character is inmature.

"When people ask me about my first kill, I tell them I felt nothing.

Shut the FUCK up. SHUT UP.

I was practical. Efficient. He dropped and I did what I had to do. Took what I needed from his pack — the meat, the flint, everything. Simple. Necessary.

YOU LYING BITCH.
(The warmth of his blood leaking under my nails. My knees folding out. The scream stuck in my throat. The begging — “please, don’t—please—” — the sound of it like a thing I can’t unsay. My name leaving his mouth and dying.)

STOP! JUST FUCKING STOP!
It was survival! The living have a duty to stay alive, you stupid cunt!

I didn’t—
…I didn’t mean to—

No. No, you don't get to say that. Shut up, you pathetic piece of shit. Breathe. Just fucking breathe.

I felt nothing. NOTHING.
If I let myself feel it all— the smell, the hands, the pleading — I’d still be there on the dirt, sobbing like a broken animal.

My body is a good learner. It's the only goddamn thing that matters."

Cunt is extremely old, 13th century, but it didn't become an insult until the 17th century.
>>
>>97013757

The words are fine. It is the tone and usage you wrote feels very 20th–21st century:

the rhythm
the insults
the syntax

the self-directed swearing (“you lying bitch,” “pathetic piece of shit”)

the emotional cadence

This is modern trauma self-talk, not medieval swearing style.

Use instead stuff like:

“Gods damn you!”

“Blood and ash!”

“Son of a whore!”

“Rot take me!”

“You worthless little cur!”

“You’re filth.”

“You’re nothing.”

“Devils drag you down.”

“Spirits damn your weakness.”

And especially:

invoking body parts (“shit-eater,” “whelp,” “gutless worm”)

invoking gods/spirits/devils

invoking fate, rot, ash, hunger, winter

This keeps it emotionally savage but less modern.

>Gem Dragonborn
I hate Gem DBs with a passion. They're so fucking toyetic in nature. Its so clear they were made the objective best ones in 2014 to sell the fucking Fizbans book. They also completely break the dichotomy Metallics have with Chromatics of Order vs. Chaos.
Though I'll relent thats my own personal autism. They just feel like Crystal Ponies. They exist to push New Product.

>Chromatics gain complete immunity to their resistance.
ONE. MINUTE. Of immunity. One fucking minute once a day. Its hilariously ass in combat unless you just so happen to be fighting an elemental that coincides with your element. At 1 minute you cant even do something narratively cool like "Oh I pop my immunity and run into the burning building to save the NPC."

You could fix DBs with one of two ways;
>Actually expand on the differences between Metallic vs Chromatic like they were trying in Fizbans
Or
>Give each Ancestry Type (Poison, fire, etc.) a rider effect, save or suck, etc. (Kinda like what Goliaths have in 2024.)

As you said, I hate how WotC makes Dragonborns entire racial identity Breath Weapon and only make it worth using after a checklist of conditions have been met!
>>
>>97011990
I would say Monk. Elderly monks are a classic
>>
>>97014387
Gem Dragonborns are canon because 2014 Dragonborns were so shit that people frequently made homebrews to compensate and Gem Dragonborns were the most often created 3rd addition to the Metallics and Chromatics, at least from what I saw
I saw Turtle Dragonborns, the occasional Faerie, wyvern and Pseudo varieties but I don't think WotC would want to go down that route

Dragonborns should get Dragon hide and Dragon fear built into their mechanics instead of it being a feat. It's silly that you'd have to get a feat for something that comes natural for fucking Lizardfolks
Also give each Dragonborn an ability straight from their Draconic ancestry other than the Breath weapon, like Brass Dragonborns can put people to sleep with their Breath Weapon, Copper Dragonborns can slow people down and Silver Dragonborns can paralyze people
>>
>>97013686
I remember hearing some theories in MtG threads that Lorwyn was pushed back to make room for the Spiderman set. This would lend evidence to that.

>>97013941
Is it at least the old style of Genasi where they can use Con as a casting ability? That was more unique at least.
It's also a bit of a strange choice given how Flamekin are supposed to change forms.

I also wonder what they're going to do with merfolk, since Lorwyn merfolk don't have legs at all.

I was thinking about Wis Saves, but Dex also looks quite strong
>>
>>97014891
NTA, but I would suggest Wis. Dex saves often just result in damage, which you've got plenty of HP to soak up, while a failed Wisdom save can often just render you incapable of attacking.
>>
>>97014170

>>97014788
Solid point, though I did play an extra old monk in a previous campaign recently so I might mix it up. I'm meant to be tied to an NPC so I'll probably ask my DM how old the NPC is. If they're on the younger side I'll make my character 50-60ish and a fighter, if they're older I'll make my character 70+ and a monk. If they're really young, back to the drawing board I guess
>>
>>97015421
Fizban's Treasury of Dragons had some magic items which gain power from being in the hoard of more powerful dragons, and if I remember right there's a way to use that to steadily upgrade them by killing more powerful dragons in their lairs.

magic items dawg

>>97015566
We don't talk about the gnome's psychic fluid.
>>
>>97015600
Ah. In that case, there is just magic items in a broader sense. Magic weapons that add to attack or damage rolls are fairly common and can help bridge that sort of gap, or otherwise offer utility.
Most of that is under the purview of the DM though. The FTD items are the only ones that I can think of that scale separately, but more often it's the case where you just find better weapons as you go through the game.
>>
>>97015600
You don't necessarily need to level up to be given stronger magic items (though you'd need a way to stop stronger party members co-opting them). You can give the party a sidekick from Tasha's and say the falling-behind player gets to control it. A very small number of NPCs can impart things on PCs, like getting lycanthropy from a werebear or other good-aligned werebeast, or making a pact with an imp/pseudodragon, because they have rules for that in their statblocks
>>
>>97013757
just dial down on the "fuck/fucking", it reeks of modern fantasy game/show or animated series in general trying to sound mature by putting emotional breakdown. I don't even think that you need to use specific medieval swears, just dial down on the vulgarity and it will feel more earnest and less cringe
>>
>>97015659
There are magic items that require attunement by specific classes or races for that reason, if the DM really wants to tailor an item for a specific PC and there's too much risk of overlap otherwise.
>>
>>97015835
The downside to that is the vast majority of them are for fullcasters only, who are the least likely to fall behind, with rangers and paladins sharing a couple with their caster counterparts. Monk got a few in Fizban's, but he could just homebrew new ones if really needed. Though, I got the vibe from the posts that anon is looking for RAW methods first, could be wrong.

what social class is the character from roughly, how educated are they?

using profanity that way, where the obscene words themselves have power as intensifiers, is relatively modern. like the character can say fuck if they're talking about fucking, but just 'fuck!' as an exclamation itself gives it that modern feeling. but the stumbling block with historical profanity in english is that it's all religious, even the name and the phrase 'to swear' are after all, so someone might exclaim god's wounds! or god's blood! or just s'wounds! .It wouldn't make sense for a dnd character to swear by jesus of course, but just insert something else from the setting that would be profaned by taking its name in vain. something else to swear by, something that you might invoke to curse someone or something, along those lines. i think the english translations of umberto eco novels do a good job of mixing more archaic cursing with relatively modern language, maybe try there.

Also, I hate the fact that the Rogue subclass saves the special Sneak Attack to level 17 instead of giving an array of options like the base class options.
>>
>>97016748
For starters, you could go for a Maul in place of a Greatsword. Mechanically it's near identical, but only costs 10 gp instead.
The chainmail could be excused by saying you looted it off of a Hobgoblin or some other low-level humanoid monster.

Alternatively, if you have proficiency with Smith's Tools, saying your character made their gear themselves is also an option. In that context, Chainmail and a Maul would cost 42 gp in raw materials, which is still a hefty sum, but it's less than the cost of a healing potion, so it's a rather feasible amount to have lucked into.

What do you think of these spells and stats for a lvl 3 eldritch Knight? Any suggestions or tips?
Fighting Style: Defense
Str 17, Dex 11, Con 16, Int 12, Wis 10, Cha 8
Cantrips: Blade Ward and Minor Illusion (or Shocking Grasp?)
1st-Level: jump, Find familiar, Shield.
>>
With the rules on short and long rests and the focus on tactical character-focused combat, is 5e ideal for running really big dungeons?
>>
>>97018830
You will want an attacking cantrip eventually. If you're using the 2024 rules, swapping out for a different cantrip later is an option, but you'll probably eventually want True Strike or Shocking Grasp in place of Minor Illusion.
To that end, you'd also probably want higher Int than Con. While it's possible to build an EK with low Int, I wouldn't recommend it unless you really know what you're doing.

Find Familiar and Shield are both very solid. Personally not a big fan of Jump, although my other utility suggestions would just be Detect Magic or Featherfall, which also aren't always the most useful.
If you want to get fancy, you could take Fog Cloud and grab the Blind Fighting style, although that can make things hard for the rest of your party, so it's not always easy to get the most out of.

so yeah keep obscenity where it's being used to describe a literal thing, the actual act of fucking, bodily functions etc, but remove it where it's being used an exclamation or an intensifier since that wasn't really how people thought of insulting or foul language historically, especially someone who wouldn't be concerned with her speech being vernacular and 'common'.

I had fun simulating it though. Here's the write up
>Round 1
The wizard opens the battle with precision. A shimmering Wall of Force erupts between him and Kefka, partitioning the battlefield like invisible glass. Kefka taps it with a painted fingernail, lips curling. Unable to reach his foe, he detonates a Toxic Burst on the wizard’s side. Poisonous rainbow vapors swirl—yet the wizard’s Arcane Ward drinks the damage.
>Round 2
The wizard responds with Globe of Invulnerability, a dome of abjuration light locking him inside a sanctuary of absolute safety. Kefka screams with rage and fires Sunbeam, but it splashes harmlessly across the globe. Still laughing, still furious, he rises into the air, wings of magical filth flapping.
>Round 3
The wizard summons Bigby’s Hand, a colossal blue fist that materializes beside Kefka and punches him hard enough to send him spinning. Kefka lashes out with Disintegrate, aiming not at the wizard but at the hand—but the construct survives the blast.
>Round 4
The Hand switches tactics, shifting to its Forceful form. With a massive swing, it shoves Kefka 25 feet through the air. The wizard nails him with a well-placed Fire Bolt, flames curling around Kefka’s floating form. Kefka retaliates with another radiant attack, but restrained and off-balance, he misses wildly.
>Round 5
The wizard unleashes Chain Lightning, sending a roaring cascade of electric energy through Kefka’s spasming body. Bigby’s Hand follows with a perfect Grasping Hand, capturing and restraining him midair. Kefka struggles—screaming, writhing, humiliated—but cannot escape the crushing spectral grip.
>>
>>97019507
>Round 6
The wizard casts Time Stop, freezing the world. But Kefka is no normal enemy—his fury warps reality. With a Mythic Reaction, he breaks the timestream itself. Light fractures. Color collapses. He ascends into Phase 2, the Wrecker of Hope, restoring 150 HP and gaining colossal wings of radiant madness. He unleashes Temporal Shatter, smashing the ward and nearly buckling the Globe.
>Round 7
Choosing boldness, the wizard drops Wall of Force and unleashes hell. Chain Lightning tears through the ascended Kefka, followed by Bigby’s crushing fist. Kefka, bloodied but ecstatic, counters with mythic Sunbeam, finally piercing the globe and carving radiant agony across the wizard’s chest.
>Round 8
Bigby’s Hand grapples Kefka again, pressing him into helplessness. The wizard raises his staff and fires Disintegrate. The restrained Kefka fails his save and bursts into a cloud of glittering dust, screaming defiance as he dissolves.
Phase 2 is annihilated.
But disintegrating a godling only frees its true form.
>Phase 3: The God of Magic descends.
The sky tears open. Stained-glass fissures radiate across the firmament. A pillar of ruinous light descends, and from it emerges an angelic abomination: Kefka’s true form, serene and blasphemous, wings layered like cathedral icons. Reality trembles in his presence.
>Round 1 (Phase 3):
Kefka acts first. With gentle, divine malice, he extends a single finger and unleashes Light of Ruin—an apocalyptic beam of radiant and necrotic annihilation. The wizard is caught full-force and collapses instantly to 0 HP.
Death Saves:
First roll: 14 — success.
Kefka leans over the dying wizard and whispers a divine curse. One automatic failure.
The next roll is a natural 1—two failures.
Successes: 1
Failures: 3
Death.
The wizard’s soul rises like a faint spark. Kefka taps it lightly.
>“Boop.”
His laughter fills the heavens as the Theatre of Madness reforms around him.
He ascends victorious, a god unchallenged.

How... would you distribute the stats?
>>
>>97022553
Keeping it simple, I'd just swap it around for 16 Int and 12 Con. That gives you a decent spellcasting modifier in the long term, and you shouldn't really need a ton of Con.
Also worth asking what race and origin feat you were looking at.
>>
>>97023057
Hmm, I was thinking of using a human noble (origin feat skilled to be more useful outside of fights) with the extra origin feat tough to be more durable
>>
>>97023489
If you're taking tough, then there isn't much issue with putting less in Con. And higher Int will benefit more if you're investing in other skills.
I will say Magic Initiate might be worth considering to get some extra spells, but if you're starting at 3rd level anyway it's not major.
>>
I have just been introduced to the comic Fafhrd and The Gray Mouser. Basically a barbarian and a rogue having adventures through a low fantasy setting. Pretty good, might make some characters based on them.
>>
Anyone ever have a game where members of your party come to hate each other? I'm in my first campaign right now and one of the party HATES my character because he kinda desecrated a sacred place of his religion to boost his own power. Which was funny. But any pretense of getting along is out the window and that character thinks mine has damned his soul to oblivion through his actions. It's been interesting the last couple sessions.
>>
>>97024083
In an old campaign that never finished me and the other players were former captives of a weird Artificer Elf that experimented on us
I Disguised Self to look like him to prank the other characters after we escaped and was subsequently beaten down for it. Needless to say after another session the entire campaign died

To be honest I didn't find the campaign to be fun from the start

Yuan-Ti make better social pariah characters than the social pariah race (tiefling)
they are also cuter
>>
>wizard attuned to a powerful evil book that's now corrupting him
>threw a succubus at the ranger disguised as her love interest
>transitioned naturally into a flashback of the artificer's lowest point from his backstory
>all of the above prompted some of the best roleplaying in the campaign so far with unique opportunities to show new sides to the PCs
Feels good man

I don't care about stats, actually. I care about artwork and lore, even small details.
Thing is, I'm trying to make an adventure for Daggerheart system in the Lorwyn / Shadowmore setting.
Ofc, MtG wiki exists and I also read all the books by Cory J Herndon, but there's always never enough material to research.

Almost certainly. I highly doubt we'll see something like Theros, where the sourcebook expanded hugely on the roles of the different gods and the difference between "fate" and "destiny". This is a quick $15 PDF that they're shoving alongside a Forgotten Realms release.

I don't know much about Yuan-ti so far, but the Pureblood in my group has been my favorite pc so far, his evil roleplay is balanced enough that he still fits in the group and it was funny seeing him having a meltdown in character when a npc didn't hold up his promise and was this close to killing him
Also adopted a robot girl, didn't want to do so at first, but when he saw that she could help him craft items, he immediatly accepted her into the group "It's not child labor if its not a real person"

https://5e.tools/bestiary.html#speaker%20devil_abh
CR 12 with this as one of two at-will bonus actions:

>Utterance of Pain. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 18, each creature in a 20-foot Emanation originating from the devil. Failure: The target has the Stunned condition until the end of the devil's next turn.

Why are we still getting boring, frustrating stunlocker monsters?
>>
>>97029087

What is worse is that since this is a 20-foot emanation, it is especially punishing on melee characters who dare to move up to the speaker devil to engage it. As usual, long-ranged attackers and dedicated spellcasters remain safe and privileged.

It does also have dimension door, so it can just drop on top of anyone ranged. Assuming that it doesn't just win on initiative, teleport in, and stun everyone all at once.

Really just another reason to invest in Wis so that there's more of a chance of not just failing over and over.

>Travel from the Forgotten Realms into an all-new fey realm

>Journey beyond the Forgotten Realms to the beloved plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor

https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/2069-add-a-delightful-twist-to-forgotten-realms
>While exploring the untamed wilds of the Moonshae Isles, you stumble across a shimmering portal bathed in a sunbeam that filters through the canopy above. On the other side lies Lorwyn

https://5e.tools/book.html#lfl,1,adapting%20species

Lorwyn-Shadowmoor is apparently connected to the Forgotten Realms via the Moonshae Isles. While Lorwyn fairies (faeries) and Lorwyn halflings (kithkin) have no special benefits, Shadowmoor fairies and Shadowmoor halflings have free darkvision 120 feet, so... can we just declare that our fairy and halfling PCs come from Shadowmoor for that free darkvision 120 feet?
>>
>>97029309
>Rimekin just get a cold damage version of Flameblade
As if getting rid of Cinders wasn't already boring enough. Also strictly speaking I thought the deal of Faeries with Lorwyn was that they didn't change between Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, so I'm not sure why that's different.

More broadly though this is something that's becoming more clear about the 2024 rules. All the races are extremely light on features. The changelings have proficiency with Performance and can Dash if they're not surprised on imitative, but the shapeshifting isn't useful as a disguise, since you're just changing your limb configuration.
It's all just really boring and I really don't know why they even bothered.

Not to mention that it seems like really poor design to just have an extra feature with no tradeoffs. If Sunlight Sensitivity were still a thing, that'd make a lot more sense as an addition here, and I'd probably apply it if anyone seriously asked to play a Shadowmoor race.
>>
>>97029392
I think people are just too scared to give their races anything that would be deemed broken and OP or too similar to pre-existing races
>>
>>97029580
>people
That's an official WotC splat that costs $15. If it were some random homebrew I wouldn't care.
>too similar to pre-existing races
90% of what's in that book is pre-existing races or reprints though. The Flamekin is just a Fire Genasi, and the Rimekin just takes that, swaps out Fire resistance for Cold resistance, and has Ray of Frost and Ice Knife instead of Produce Flame and Burning Hands.

Come to think of it, if they were worried about being too powerful, then instead of giving some of the Shadowmoor species free Darkvision, maybe they should have made that the Shadowmoor Origin feat.
