>tell people here that 40k used to be a silly pastiche
>get told that it only applies to rogue trader and the setting became serious with second edition
>second edition is even goofier than rogue trader
>3rd edition has fucking Sly Marbo
What is up with 40k autists taking the setting so seriously? It’s always been a goofy 2000 A.D. pastiche.
>>
>>97099207
40k, it's fans, and everything related to it are retarded as fuck. 40k competes directly with Magic the Gathering and D&D 5e for biggest source of contagious retardation in the Traditional Gaming space.
>>
>>97099207
>What is up with 40k autists taking the setting so seriously
Average person claiming that never read any lore, and often also didn't play any of the games.
It's pretty normal.
Something very similar applies to Slavs and WFRP - they played the rules when 1e was released, but made up their own lore to fill the pop-culture void. So they insist to this day that WFRP and WF as a setting are 200% serious and hardcore, no humor allowed
>>
>>97099207
Because taking it seriously is part of the humour, and autists are fundamentally unable to understand that.

>First edition is wacky as fuck
About the same amount of wackiness across all editions until very late 90s, it even applies to whfb.
>>
>>97099298
I'd argue 40k stayed wacky well into 5th edition.
>>
>>97099308
You could also argue that the whole primaris/Cawl retardation is pretty goofy all things considered.
>>
>>97099207
As >>97099242 says, taking it seriously is how you participate in the fun. If you don't take it seriously you just come across as a faggot. There has to be a word for this.

Indeed, this entire concept exists because people saw a character was a reference to a movie and they though
>oh so it's a big silly funny? just a funny wacky haha? it has a move reference so it's all just some wackadoo satiresque parody joke?

>DND fans like to stat characters/monsters from other media, worst trait is just constantly trying to fit square pegs into their round hole of a system
>40K fans will bring up, unprompted, how 40K curbstomps every other setting in existence at any time and in any place (this despite the fact that 40K is on the low end of scifi power scaling)
I know which one of these I’m voting off the island.

Most warhammer fans online are youtube secondaries or if they read the books they're reading the newer stuff like the Horus Heresy that's full of retcons and there's not really any drive to go and read the older books when the whole fanbase is like "dude you can jump in wherever just listen to this podcast/watch this lore video".

I can think of three reasons:
Young people tend to ignore the good advice that older and more experienced people tell them.
Most of them are to young to remember the good old days and only know what GW, shills, X and Reddit tell them today.
They don't like being told that something they are pouring their life, soul and wealth into started off as a joke. (Autists don't get humour)

>Most of them are to young to remember the good old days and only know what GW, shills, X and Reddit tell them today.
And of course James is going to want their products to be seen as "Mature" and "Sophisticated" to justify their insane prices.

What part of "2000 AD" did you not understand? Why the fuck do you think he was comparing it to Monty Python?
>>
>>97099328
Some people are just too irony-poisoned. They're worried about coming across as cringe by being sincere about anything so instead they have to treat everything as weird and silly.

Small portions of it were. Much like how Half Life and Portal have serious and comedic moments. Much like how any media has similar dynamics. What you're trying to do is gaslight and misdirect people by well known bad faith positions and false premises. Anyone that engages with you on a face value is a fool and you're a massive tool. The only reason I'm even elaborating upon this is to call you out for being a piece of shit that needs to fuck off.

I don't think he's the piece of shit taking his wee army men too seriously...

It might've had its origins in parody but it now has an identity or gravitas all its own. To explain it another way, on the scale of simulacrum explained by fish, you are currently at the swedish fish level.

The answer is presentation, anon. The lore used to be presented as gritty and edgy if somewhat nonsensical in a number of ways. And now, outside of outlier examples, by and large it's not presented as nonsensical but self-serious. That's really it.

It's all the worse off for it that it's all self-serious imo, but eh. That's how it goes.

It was an homage, rather than just a pastiche, to historical, pop cultural and alternative entertainment media, which can have some light hearted and some more serious aspects, both played straight faced and over the top, rather than just being one or the other. Its not all le ebin wacky hahahs and its not all grimdarkicus skullhammer. Let the thing have some nuance and breath a bit instead of trying to make it about whatever you think is the most important.
>>
You shouldn’t be allowed to repeat the line about satire if you can’t name what it’s parodying. And no, Dredd and 2000 AD are already themselves parody so those don’t count

>>
>>97099207
The setting as a whole is very silly and over the top, but I think it's a good thing to be able to suspend disbelief and engage with the world presented sincerely. Nobody likes the chucklefuck smugly trying to kill the fun of playing along with fantastical silliness.

These days 40k is written, and taken, super seriously because it's an entirely different set of directions for GW.
Instead of being the edgy, gritty OTT universe where you had the choice to be serious or silly, it treats itself like Star Wars, where things HAVE to make sense, and not be too ridiculous, and power hierarchies are a thing because the writers have all caught brainrot and forgotten their roots.
But now, a surprisingly large amount of 40k fans are post 2016, post primaris, and ONLY know the sanitized, takes-itself-seriously setting where the Imperium are the 'blue hero guys' and 'the good guys' next to the 'evil red&black guys with horns' (Chaos), and the 'other guys in the backround' (Xenos).
And because a large number of these new fans are also media illiterate, and feel the 'authoritarian trad good vs chaotic wild evil' matches their own brainrot political views, they're vehemently against the idea that the setting might not be too serious, because then the setting 'might not agree with them'. Both because that implies their own views are silly, and it involves recognizing material where the good guys (Imperium) do silly evil shit because traditions/power/ignorance/religion/lol why not, and the bad guys (Chaos&renegades) don't actually seem too terrible by comparison.

it used to get brought up because 40k fans were retarded and would say the 40k universe is the bestest and mostest powerful
despite the fact that it is in fact an unpowered setting populated by retarded people
