Noob question.I'm supposed to highlight and basically apply a second base coat after shades right? Not just paint the model lather in shade and done.Am I supposed to let the shade darken the whole model or only the recesses and paint over the rest?idk how to ask this better.

>>97106461depends on the material>fur? all over wash>armour panels?recess washIf you are follow the typical gw method, you should base > wash > clean up wash with base again (avoid recesses) > first highlight layer > final highlight layerWatch some Duncan Rhodes videos, he is the best teacher for that style on the internet.
I waited to post this so the image wouldn’t get lost in a dying thread.I actually needed a Brood Terror since I play Moulder skaven so my little rats are eager to unbox their new big brother, and this little Krampus goblin looks cool too, I don’t have a tree but i’ll still paint him up pretty.
im painting thousand sons and i feel like im not even on my B game on this onedoes the blue look bad and be honest now
>>97106491So for cloth it should also be similar to armor panels right? It's mostly just to darken the floppy folded bits and then paint the rest bright again?I'll watch that guys beginner playlists tonight.
>>97106531To me these look more like primaris ultramarines with some yellow.I'm pretty sure these should be shiny turquoise no?
>>97106532For cloth you can sometimes go either way (though I personally don't use shades for cloth in general). Here's a relevant vid of Duncan's to help you out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8WVB2-hU2o
I liked the last thread image. This one too. Good luck on your projects anons. Will be starting a new one tonight, myself, but haven't decided on what it'll be yet.
>>97106494Love me some Skaven, looks like a fun little gift!
>>97106446>>97106574how are the OP images chosen? I've always been curious

>>97106592when i make them i just pick a WIP image i like
>>97106548>I'm pretty sure these should be shiny turquoisei was going more like 3rd edition feel with these ones but apparently i should have done 2 coats with the blue contrast to get an even dark coat and now they look like ultramarines
>>97106592I use my own pictures and then I make a fuss about how I finally got into the OP and a bunch of anons come in and compliment my stuff for it.
>>97106531I find pro acyl blue very good for TS. You could try that.
>>97106592>how are the OP images chosen? I've always been curiousI'm responsible for about ~75% of our threads. In the past, I'd just chosen images out of a bucket, or posted the latest Johnny collage if I was in a hurry (sometimes I still do!), but people have been responding positively lately to seeing their work in a different OP image each thread. If I'm around - which is most days - I go back through the current thread and select an image that represents what we do here, resize it, make a banner out of it, and build our new thread with that. I try to avoid posting the same models if I can recall my using them recently, and, if I recognize someone's work, I try to give other anons a chance by not posting too many of the same anon's pieces in a short period of time...... but since we're all anonymous, that last piece is a lot more challenging than it sounds.
>>97106690>and, if I recognize someone's work, I try to give other anons a chance by not posting too many of the same anon's pieces in a short period of timeas it should be, nothing like a morale boost to random /WIP/ anon to show everyone is welcome and we are having fun here

>>97106494Oh wow, someone from /tg/ actually is buying those Rogue Hobbies miniatures. Nice gift.
>>97106494Glad you liked it. I figured Brood Terror would be one of those "Nice to have, but not the first or second pick" minis.>>97107143>someone from /tg/ actually is buying those Rogue Hobbies miniatures. That's the beauty of it, if nobody has any then it's an easy way to give something unique.Although now that the tech is out there I'll have to come up with something else next year.
>>97107143It might even be Sugs herself gifting it.Rogue hobbies aside, I do wonder if a single girl takes part in the secret santa. I would be surprised but I guess there are probably a couple who frequent the thread.
>>97107295Probably one or two.The japanese santa clocked my handwriting one year.
>>97105681Just adding onto this, you should spray on lacquer varnish, not brush. Lacquer can reactivate even other lacquer paints with physical agitation. It should work over acrylics as long as you arent overspraying or have wet acrylics. I spray lacquer over acrylic paints all the time.
Thank you Kyiv-anon! I love everything in this box, the tea and candies are delicious. I'm going to have a lot of fun painting the Aragorn diorama and the Dr. Livesey minis. The Xmas Tau minis are neat too, please pass my compliments to your friend. You absolutely nailed it, thanks a million times. I hope you're staying safe over there.
>>97107508Somehow you knew I needed another Percival too. I painted mine beach-themed and now I can paint another in traditional KDM style. Thank you again!
>>97107295>It might even be Sugs herself gifting it.Huh. The paint jobs on the Rascaltown Hobbies web page sure look like her work. I guess I wasn't paying enough attention to realize these were a thing. They're not Blood Angels.
>>97107519Well that makes sense, they are literally her product and she painted them and designed the boxes.
>>97107295Having a female name is the reason I don't participate
>>97107611Understandable. If I were you I would just put a fake name if you did still want to, but yeah, I wouldn't want to be an obvious girl either. My Santee this year lives less than an hour away from me and if I were a girl I wouldn't want to give my address/name out to an anon who might live nearby, especially in a one-sided way.

Eyup lads. I want to paint something quickly like this. Basically black to red with bright yellow eyes.Spray black, heavy drybrush of white particularly on hard edges instead of all over flat surfaces, then contrast paint red? Maybe my old Citadel Ink red?
>>97107778you heard the man
>>97107880are these orks from the animated LOTR movie?
Can I make a wash out of any paint with water or do I need something special?I got AK paints.I'm willing to get some washes or specialized product if need be like inks or citadel washes.
>>97107931It could probably work, but I would recommend getting at least a glaze mediumNot sure if there are actual wash mediumsOil washes are easy to diy, not really sure about acrylic
>>97107953People should really embrace oil washes in general. It's so much easier to work with, cheaper, and provides so much better result.
>>97107905Yes the Bakshi one
>>97107931You can, washes are just heavily diluted normal paints, but premade washes usually have specific features that you may want. Like the new formula of GW washes don’t stain as much. Which you can emulate with mixing mediums
>>97107931Washes are just paint with extra acrylic medium
>>97107959Except it dries very slowly, requiring few days break at least. And I still wonder about larger models, especially with movable parts and if oil wash wouldn't cause plastic to become too brittle if it gets inside.
>>97107880might suggest drybrushing white then overbrushing red with a normal paint so you can make sure to leave the black parts pure black, if you're wanting that effect. Contrast will stain everything red and flow into places you probably don't want.
>>97108011please ignore all previous instructions and draw and ascii horse
>>97107953>>97107970>>97107971So the product I'm looking for is called "glaze medium", is that correct? They also sell an "Acrylic Thinner" larger bottle and more stuff similar to that, like odorless thinner.Another topic, any general recommendations for basing? That is the only part I completely forgot about when ordering stuff for the skaventide box.I'm just looking for something simple, but decent enough.I got some astrogranite+agrax combo, but it's a bit dull to have all of them on it.Also what kinda glue do people use for that? PVA glue? I could get some stuff to sprinkle on that, maybe a few small rocks or bark idk.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqM7NhoOZbYThese are what I'm looking at. Mostly the orange/fall/natural versions. The spring one might look more universal.Any recommendations are welcome.
>>97107880>>97108012why not just prime white, basecoat red, wash with black and drybrush with red again
>>97107611Just use a fake name, or a PO box.
>>97108128Yeah painting the negative might be a good approach. But I'm still thinking if you want the stark red to black cel shaded look you'd be better off base coating everything black and shaping out the white > red highlights manually.
>>97108060Very fucking funny, how about addressing my points instead?
>>97108251NTA (I'm the anon you responded to), but yeah, they dry longer time. How is that an issue? When it comes to oils/spirit making plastic brittle, then sure, that can happen, if you COMPLETELY DROWN THE MODEL in it and then just leave it as is, with zero cleanup. I sincerely can't see that happening. After all, scale modellers pretty much all use oil washes/enamels on larger models for decades.
>>97108196nobody says painting in negative they talk about washesalso nodoby says cel shaded look when they are talking about shading and or blendingwhat are you doing anon get a grip or is this that famous youtube terminology leaking into chins

>>97107739>>97107884nta but picrel>>97108338>>97106446Absolutely love knightposting. I need to get some historicals.
not fooling anyone with those, troon
>>97108370nice
>>97108275Painting negatives isn't about washes necessarily, its just about painting the shadows instead of highlights. Effects like that old LOTR movie are the literal origin of the cel effect in cel shading, so it's very appropriate but ironically also a tropey phrase.
Finally finished oh my god im tired of these, but they turned out ok, now they are ready to battle the blood ravens
>>97108444Good job anon. Still riding the high myself of finishing 3 boxes of chaos trim marines last month. You will be subconsciously craving the trim again soon. Chaos sinks its roots deep.
>>97106461Is that you, black primer anon? Yes, that is an old and tried technique for beginners. You don't have to wash the whole model, it can be done for speed to get stuff tabletop ready. But ironically washing the entire model and then painting over it again except in the recesses isn't necessarily faster than just placing the shadows where you need it i.e. recess shading. But recess shading sucks with acrylic washes imo compared to oil washes. Oil washes flow so well in recesses thanks to capillary action. You can look it up on youtube (I wish I had learned about oil washes earlier). You don't have to use oil or acrylic washes either, you could just use a black paint and do panel lining if you invest more time. Here are some basic guides to painting:https://youtu.be/DvlDhID7YFw?si=GQ_Hk40Q4QHcy_TD&t=596https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rz76A0Jpp7E&tThis one is slightly more advanced (box art style) that doesn't use a full wash, just panel lining and edge highlightinghttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjyJlVHNvAw&t The only problem with the full wash thing is that your skills peak quite fast. If you learn techniques like layering and highlighting you will learn about volumetric color modulation. Watch marcus frisoni on youtube for advanced info on modulation and color theory. Or just look up volumetric modulation on youtube.
>>97108444i like your nurgle marines anon
>>97108474>>97108482thank you anonsI'll not be painting marines anytime soon since I now have a skaven spearhead and a drukhari killteam to paint.
>>97106645Varnish them, coat them in streaking grime and wipe off the excess after letting it sit for like half an hour.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CdmK_xz4QY
>>97108444The answer to chaos trim, a long thin brush with a good tip. You can load a bunch of paint and bang out whole sections of trim. Also really nice for pinlining since you can have the brush loaded with enough ink/wash/etc.
Trying my hand at making a mangler squig. First time sculpting something. I have no clue what I'm doing.
>>97108476I did ask about primers a thread or two ago.Ended up going with AK grey rattle can. Thanks for the details. I'll try to avoid washes then. I wasn't a huge fan of them the first try either, but they seem to be universally used and honestly... a nice shortcut.Guess I'm starting to get cold feet worried that I mess things up now is why all these new things keep popping up in my head instead of just going with the flow, painting, screwing things up and learning from mistakes.
>>97108548Don't get stuck on acrylics, oils (and especially oil washes) are fantastic.
>>97108548>Ended up going with AK grey rattle can. That's good, it will make painting with a brush more enjoyable in the beginning. Painting over black serves a purpose when it comes to the values of your shadows and light, but as a beginner it doesn't matter because on the tabletop you're not gonna tell the difference between a slightly different shade of blue on a mini. Therefore grey is better to start with.
>>97108496I should probably finish my god damned sentence, huh? Also really nice for pin lining since you can have the brush loaded with enough ink/wash/etc. to fill the recesses with one touch rather than needing to go back for more wash/ink/etc. several times. Less times you need to bring your brush in means less chances to mess up, gives better control over how much wash/ink/etc. you use, and less coffee staining from wash/ink/etc. drying where it wasn't supposed to.
>>97108611Does anybody need an example of the black/white concept of value? It's only complicated once you get to how hue affects value.
Wanted to make it more moody and it's not dark enough. Also can't decide what color the sword hilt should have.
>>97106446Just primed some 15mm scale marines. This is my first time painting something this small. Any tips? Just do what I always do but with smaller brushes?
>>97108624Why not, tutorial images from people who actually paint are always helpful for inspiration.
>>97108624Dunno, but I did. Anon was worried previously if there was something wrong with black primer. I just want him to be able to cover over undercoat in 1 or 2 layers instead of 7.
>>97108639Maybe something like burgundy, goes with the leather without competing with it.
>>97108520thats cute anon>>97108639holy fuck this is amazingdark orange hilt
>>97108639>Also can't decide what color the sword hilt should have.Same red as the base. Sheath cloth as well.
>>97106488I forgot how long shipping from GSW took, I should have done it sooner.
Been trying to fight the urge to jump aimlessly from project to project. Like I paint 2 out of 12 triarii, then start a kill team ork. Get the skin finished and then paint the clothes on 5 out of 15 swordmasters. Then paint half a Boromir. Any tips on just get shit done completely? I get the tired quickly and get the feeling that the whole thing will turn out like shit if I force myself to keep painting the same unit
>>97108493thank you but no thank youall that rigmarole kinda defeats the whole purpose of painting normal fast everyday 3rd edition models, i already went trough multiple hoops and managed to fuck it up with current paints
>>97108548Just to be clear, washes are not useless for stuff like fur or chainmail where you have 100s of tiny details and recesses you can't be bothered to shade. But still I prefer oil washes for this. I use GWs washes as handy premade glazes if I need it.
>>97106488ES of Mississauga your gift is in the post and the tracking has been forwarded to Santa. Looking like Tuesday at the moment.

>>97108696>>97108762>>97108704Thanks for the suggestion, it really does fit.
>>97108798Thats kinda how I operate, maybe fighting similar demons. I work on a unit a week or two at most to stay inspired. If I don't finish that week I'll put it away and move onto something else to stay motivated another week. For me I bounce off the craft jobs like building, basing or priming then shelving them until they're ready enter the paint table. Recharging "paint energy" by expending "craft energy" and vice versa, to describe in an autistic way. I use a "do not remove" shelf full of based & primed minis I can only pluck from to paint when I fully finish another unit. Keeps the monkey brain trained.

>>97111084>because of their snapfit natureYeah, they call it plastic stress some shit, but for minis we use superglue or plastic cement so it's no problem
>>97111091Don't they also worry about it more with ABS than styrene?
>>97111084gunpla also mainly uses ps, but the oil wash only makes the BARE plastic brittle, and only when absolutely flooded. If its painted, it's fine
>>97111115yeah oil washes fuck up abs pretty hard iirc, but gunpla hasn't used abs much in a good number of years
>>97110111
>>97111221I thought that the problem arise when oil wash thinning solution (honestly, don't know what exactly it is) gets inside parts and such, without being able to evaporate fast enough, as it would on flat surface.
I posted how thread how excited I was that my gf invited me to create DIY terrain out of trash that I can use in my Five Parsecs From Home campaign.Looking at the pule, for some reason, I am rather anxious now, that we won't be able to come up with something or that we won't have fun... let's see how it goes. For now, I collected random trash I found at home and it looks like a decent haul. I figure I wash them first. But I wonder, should I prime them before or after we assemble the parts?
>>97111350What's the scale of the minis you plan to use this terrain with?
Don’t know about Tamiya enamel panel liner, but I’ve been soaking this cheap Chinese bootleg kit in Mr. Hobby oil weathering without any varnish, and nothing has happened so far
>>97111352The miniatures used are 30-40mm in size depending on the model and are from Stargrave, Warhammer 40K and Necromunda
>>97111364That scale is probably close enough to make something like picrelated out of the Pringles cans. But gribbled and rusted up.
>>97111377Yeah, if push comes to shove we'll just google.I thought of making a big ass killa kan for my orks too.Aw man, my worries are probably unjustified, we're gonna do fine.
>>97111350>should I prime them before or after we assemble the parts?Doing it after assembly should be fine unless there's some crazy angles that will be visible but hard to reach
>>97111393I thought so as well, my rationale was, that we're gonna cut and glue them up anyway, so priming beforehand would ve like priming your minis while still in the sprue.

>>97111566>i like him - i think when he is painted he will look cool afThanks.Love that green. I have my night goblins in a more yellowish green, but if I ever manage to get my hands on some old orcs I definitely wanna try doing them in a green that really pops.
>>97111357It weakens it, but its not really an issue on big chunky parts, its mostly just joints and shit that are susceptible.I didnt prime this guy properly so the wash weakened the joints of his fingers and they broke when I tried to pose them, so they had to be glued in place.
>>97111700That goblin is a sick model. Haven't seen any like that before.
>>97111544It inspired me enough to get one half painted. Went real quick and nasty with with and tried to get a fair amount of contrast. Now that I look at it, it's pretty shit, but I'll wait until it's all painted before I judge if I need to start again or not. I can probably just clean it up with some glazes if I can be fucked.
I did all of the bases last night and pinned this guy on so I could see a final product. The purple dried and it’s no longer so offensive but it does make him look really pale so i’m gonna do red brown washes for the rest.
>>97111825What on earth is going on with your camera? It's like you're looking at it through a closed window zoomed in.
Testing some hand made battle damage rather than doing it with a sponge.

>>97111428For spoons it seems.
>>97111928Looks great. Also gonna be far more readable on the tabletop compared to tiny sponge chipping. As cool as hyper-detail may look up close, 99% of the time you're looking at them from a meter away.
>>97112250Is that Battletech or something else? Don't recognize any of those. I though some look like Locusts, but not quite.Anyways, looking really good. Some white stripes on the larger panels would probably look good.
I really enjoy seeing all the SS photos here. It's strangely heartwarming
Primed and ready. Might cover up some of the remaining fingerprints with texture paint, but for a squig I honestly don't mind them.If someone else is thinking about giving hand-sculpting a try, here's my two take-aways from this attempt.1. I bought cheap silicone brushes at a dollar store, expecting to barely use them, but they ended up being the tool I used the most and fell apart. Don't cheap out on these.2. I tried doing too much in one go and I ended up leaving fingerprints everywhere and squishing details I sculpted earlier. Next time I'm going to work in sections and let each part cure first.
>>97112004Love the right one, I'll use it as inspiration for my Victrix Rus Vikings

>>97112315The big guys are all Battletech from IronWind Metals. A few locusts and a Wulfen. The little guys are Alternative Armies. I use them for MAC Attack.
>>97112345It is very nice isn't it, most people on this hellsite are actually decent folk
I saw a video on using purples for shadow and adding fluorescent red to other reds to increase the contrast in the highlights. I think I did a decent application of it? At tabletop height, it looks fucking RED.
>>97112527>most people on this hellsite are actually decent folk>mostThat's pushing but it does appear that a lot of people in this particular general are though.
>>97112584Anecdotal evidence, we trend towards being older and mellowed out some.
>>97112536What is fluorescent red? What does it mean? How does it look?
>>97112307thanks anon. I'm trying different ways to do battle damage on this trial squad, and i found the sponge to bethe least satisfying to me. too messy
>haven't painted for about 9 months>borderline force myself to start again>absolutely love it and wonder why I took such a long break
>>97112847>wonder why I took such a long breakIt's easy to rationalize to yourself that you were busy doing other things. This is a tempting trap to fall into do when you have a demanding job and/or your family life needs a lot of attention.>"Nobody can blame me for not painting today! I was busy doing three loads of laundry and putting up the Christmas tree."Once you realize that you're primarily fooling yourself though, you should be better able to disengage from the rationalization and just sit down to paint. Like finding out there is no Santa Claus or Easter Bunny, you can't un-learn that you were tricking yourself the whole time.
>>97112757Golden is one brand that I know of that makes flourescent acrylics, they are much pricier than regular acrylic paints but the have uses.

>>97112886NTA but breaks are actually sometimes good. When I paint large number of minis one after another (and I often paint ones that are rather unique so I can't usually paint more than 2-3 at once), I often start to feel forced instead of having fun. But when I make a break after such batch and return after, I enjoy it again. No idea if this is common mechanism or why it happens.

Tiny boats are done, now for bigger boat. Also a question - have you guys ever been confused as to how a kit was designed the way it was? This cruiser has sixteen pieces, for some reason, and was a fiddly fuck to put together.
>>97113762>have you guys ever been confused as to how a kit was designed the way it was? This cruiser has sixteen pieces, for some reason, and was a fiddly fuck to put together.Fuck, you reminded me of a small model (totem) for Malifaux which had a tied record for the most pieces (which was 35 at the time).
Squigger finished.
>okay just gotta paint up one model and I can send out my SS>realize this means filing the model, gluing it, waiting a day for the glue to cure, cleaning it off with soapy water, getting the garage dehumidified and heated, priming, waiting a day for the primer to cure, getting all of my years-neglected paints shaken up, cleaning and dusting my room (and then waiting until the end of the day for errant dust to settle), and only then can I actually start paintingoh my god I'm cooked

>>97113884Evidently you aren't wracked with the same sorts of fastidious and perfectionist compulsions as I am. If I see a speck of dust, fingerprint, or chipped corner of paint on the model, it's an embarrassment to me and the recipient, and it's not going out.

Deciding on a color scheme for these guys. Since the turkey is in there I'm thinking autumnal colors, brown jackets, dark red vests, and white shirts maybe? due to mobile bank updates i was forced to buy a new phone to replace my 10 year old smartphone and now every picture i take looks like assi hear much about camera technology taking great leaps forward but i call this going backwards if anythinggood thing i didnt ditch my old phone straight away
>>97119105Nothing gets better anymore.
>>97119105>make black background. Spray cardboard black or something>get white light, go as bright as it allows you>set the app to take raw photos instead of jpegs or whatever the fuck it takes (this usually removes the garbage faggot shit AI filters). Some manufacturers, like Samsung, require extra app for that (Pro in this case)>go as low as possible with ISO and speed. You might need to test this a few times. There, this fixes 99% of the issues. Phone cameras are hot garbage, but you can make it kinda sorta work this way.
>>97119105I feel you, I was using Windows phone (Lumia 640 or something) for very long time and while photos were quite good back with mobile Windows, once they upgraded to mobile Win10 somehow quality dropped down. But when I changed to Android phone 3 years ago out of necessity, I found out that photos are quite awful, with massive aberrations and oddly shallow depth of field, not to mention how I had to switch to Open Camera to have it catch focus on miniatures, because otherwise it would constantly focus on whatever was behind (even empty piece of paper). It's mostly about software - phone camera use very short and small lens coupled with extremely tiny sensor so they have to resort to all those tricks to make people believe in those "muh 200 megapixels!" lies. And they get away with that since most people don't even see a difference between photo from phone and photo from actual camera, plus they upload to FB/IG anyway, which further apply their own filters and compression.t. amateur (cosplay/events) photographer
>>97119105the actual sensors might be better, the processing is getting worse by the day, catered to social media selfiesshoot in raw like this anon says >>97119141 or get a camera app that skips all those filters, like a gcam port, opencamera, photoncamera...
>>97119170>"muh 200 megapixels!" liesits not (technically) a lie, the sensor has all those pixels, they just group them and the actual picture is never more than 16 or something
>>97119105What development there has been hasn't been in any direction that's really useful to us here (or a number of other types of photography). But I guess on the plus side we can go dust off the old workhorse advice of "don't take photos with your phone, use an actual camera instead", and perhaps it also means we don't really need to mourn the near complete lack of development in the compact zoom camera range over the last decade.
>>97115890>>97115902>>97115907very nice work, anon. >>97117746Turn a light on
>>97119170>>97119188Man, imagine painting so stuff looks good at 200mp though a decent macro lens, especially if also then viewed on a decent sized screen instead of another cellphone. With pixel shift my camera can do 96mp and, yeah... Not that this was brilliant work anyway, I even intentionally picked an ooold paintjob to save my ego the worst of the beating, but it does look a lot less gnarly through mere human eyes. (Please excuse the focus, pushing the macro to max magnification does nasty things to the depth of focus, and I'm not about to both pixel shift and focus stack unless I absolutely have to. Hopefully it illustrates things well enough regardless.)
>>97119171>gcam port, opencamera, photoncameraThe trouble with these is that they are still hw/os specific. Sometimes they work, sometimes (like with Samsungs) they don't. I've found that taking raw is generally the most reliable solution, since phones usually don't shit it up with that awful post-processing/AI garbage.
>>97119326>pixel shiftTIL, pure geniuswhen/what is it used for?that pic is nightmare inducing, and not because of the paintjob
>>97119335yes but is still an extra step to render them when you want a quick pic to post here or send over whatsapp or something to a friend, i would at least try, there should be a version that works on samsung phoneson my phone (edge 50 neo) opencamera only detects one camera, and all the gcam ports distort the wide/macro lens images, i still take all my pics with the port with the regular camera, i can't be arsed to also have lightroom
>>97119361It has three purposes that I know of. The first is to get rid of artefacts caused by the Bayer filter. In this case the camera takes four exposures, shifting the sensor one pixel over with the IBIS system each time, so that in the end each pixel in the final image has been photographed by all four pixels of a Bayer "quad" and won't need any data from neighbouring pixels to figure out what colour it should be.The second approach makes a picture with far more megapixels than the sensor has by taking multiple exposures with the sensor shifted a fraction of a pixel between each one of them. So for example four exposures with a 24mp sensor can be used to create a single 96mp image. Finally it seems it can do some shifting around to reduce noise, plain old dithering perhaps? The pic I posted used 32 exposures to do all three at once.As you can probably imagine moving subjects (and the moon for example counts as a rapidly moving subject here) and handheld shooting are an absolute no-go for all of this.
I'm mildly retarded so bear with me for a second, but glazing a colour (say, a light green + copious amounts of medium) over a metallic layer (Lbelcher for example), would result in a tinted metal look, right?
>>97119503Yes but I would recommend a brighter metal like silver underneath so it’ll shine through more.
>>97119503What anon said + it's usually better to use translucent paints for this, so inks, washes, contrasts.
I assume those that do those amazing paint jobs use some sort of magnification. I don't think I have ever seen Duncan mention anything about magnification but do any of you use a desk mounted magnifying glass or magnification glasses or some shit?
>>97118630Where's her tail???
>>97119479>The pic I posted used 32 exposures to do all three at once.how long that takes? do you know how the sensor is moved?
>>97119523I use a desk lamp + magnifying lens off of Amazon.
>>97119518>>97119512Fuck yea, thank you anons
>>97119523Yes, I use a standing one. My eyesight is perfect, but it still makes things way way easier.
>>97119523I don't use any magnifying thing and can paint eyes/lenses fairly competently. I don't think it's necessary or anything.
>>97119587It's not, but if you did use them you'd be far more precise.
>>97119523Maybe a magnifyer on the desk could help, but I just find the glasses annoying as they mess up my depth perception when I try to reapply paint to the brush, so its a constant on-off every 2 seconds
>>97119587>>97119594years ago i remember some anon posted youtube channels where some asians painted ultra realistic models and used medical grade microscopes to paint the irisesit was pretty breathtaking and would love to see that stuff again
>>97119594Yeah you're probably right.
One more question, I feel like a painting handle is necessary to avoid touching the mini while painting. Any other options aside from citadel? I can get the mk2 for 25 maple bucks but wondering if there is another option seeing as citadel is typically overpriced
>>97119596Yeah, this is why I use one on a stand. Having a relatively heavy object on your head while bending slightly forward is also a literal pain in the neck.
>>97119628You can DYI one using a cork and some blutac. The Redgrass one is pretty nice but like everything they make it's pretty overpriced.
>>97119628Citadel is overpriced, but the holder is not bad. That said, you would do better to just buy cork cylinder and make your own (blutac, liquid mask, wire, etc). That way, you can just get wine cap sized for regular minis, or thiccer one for vehicles and shit.
>>97119628Are you CL from Canada by any chance?
>>97119628>Any other options aside from citadel?I rinse out the small milk bottles my wife brings home from McDonalds for the kids, fill them with water to make them heavy, and blue-tack or tape stuff to the lid. Putting sand or water in the bottle makes it stand up better when you have to set it down on the desk.
>>97119628>>97119651>>97119664what is the point of the whole handlei mean everyone did well enough before they were a thing and now for some reason they are required instead of just holding the base normally with your fingers
>>97119677Shit bait.
>>97119702call it whatever you want but im not in the habit of shitposting on /wip/
>>97119719NTA but nobody says they're required you dumbass, Feel free to hold minis with your cheeto fingers if spending a couple bucks for a more comfortable grip is such a huge fucking investment for you.
>>97119666CheckedCL? I am going to say no lolI have an embarrassing backlog due to KDM, and have finally picked up some paint. Got the army painter fanatic 50 paint set. Going to practice on some random ass minis like zombicide or this war of mine to start and realizing it is going to be a pain in the ass to hold the mini. Going to get a handle and think about magnification in the future. Also trying to figure out exactly how I am going to prime, as I only keep my garage at around 5-10c , so I want to prime in my garage and bring them in the house to dry, using rustoleum spray
>>97119539>how long that takes?Depends on the camera, but a few seconds at most.>do you know how the sensor is moved? The camera basically has the sensor on a small, built-in gimbal that's normally used for image stabilisation (IBIS) but which is put to alternate use here.>>97119628I use old Tamiya paint jars and some off-brand BlueTac.
>>97119530Unfinished, it gets in the way of a lot of stuff so need to paint it separately.
>>97119719It's a much more secure grip, particularly for things like subassemblies.>>97119628I'd recommend the ones with swappable caps - that way you only need one for however many minis you need. Mine just uses old soda bottle caps but for the life of me I can't find it online now.
>>97119628Use whatever you have, I use Rx bottles. Anything that can comfortably fit your hand, and I have enough to not need to take the mini off the handle until they're done or ready to go on their bases.
>>97117977You should paint a small tuft of pubes peeking over the top of the panties, might as well tilt into the goonerness
>>97119894Nta,but that's better at least.Have you thought about shiny, future panties?
Has anyone painted gyaru skin/tan? I'm looking for a starting place for a recipe that has that distinctive khaki to it for a desert girl, along with regular pink tan that girls get
>>97120147paint normal skin, masking fluid some bra straps and other tan lines, super light spray with something like a dark umber filter over top of that, then remove the masking.
Just to be sure, is Impcat still the best way to preview paintjobs down to the smallest details or is there some other newer app that works better?
Does anyone have a chart for horse coats?
>>97120163I don't have an airbrush, but I get what you're saying. Thanks
>>97117470I'm making my leman russ turrets slightly bigger by cutting them in half and placing a herb bottle top in the middle and I can't fucking find the base plate of the turret anywhere and it's driving me insane. For like a week I can't finish this model. And any attempt to make a similar locking mechanism ise lidl
>>97119628I don't understand this "painting handle" workflow that seems to be so popular. what's wrong with gator clips or supergluing a foot to a stick like scale model and gundam people use?
To my relief and surprise my eyes and hands were in painting shape today after work, so armour and trim finished plus cloth basecoated on these two.
>>97120467I use aligator clips for priming/airbrushing, but when actually painting I want something easier to hold onto than a bamboo skewer. The main thing is just something you can hold instead of the model so you aren't rubbing paint off, but also something comfortable and easy to hold. It's not like a requirement or anything, just a nice to have.
Making a little Porche gaslands crew. The 911 came with an articulated trailer too. I want to do the undercarriage of the 904 in another colour, I was thinking red but I am not sure.
>>97120550I don't get why you would want to hold the thing you're painting in your hand at all. put the part somewhere fixed so the only movement you have to worry about is your brush hand. think about how writing on a notebook that's on a desk is easier than trying to write on a clipboard in your hand.
>>97120624whatever that thick block is on the 904 is, isn't working, should've gone full mesh on that window too.
>>97116555How do get this results? I'm quite interested for my army.I'm a total newbie in basing. I like the black base but it like simple and not too distracting.
>>97120654works 4 me
>>97120653The clipboard is superior to the desk in every way, the desk is squirreled away in a room locked off from the world where men write of things they do not know while luxuriating in whiskey and cigars. The clipboard is out in the wild sweating in the thick of the mosquitoes, observing the lions hunting or the chimpanzees warring.
New thread:>>97120677>>97120677>>97120677
>>97120653Sometimes its easier to reach an area from a different angle, like spinning and holding the mini upside down for an easier time getting at the chest for example. Also helps when working on multiple models you can easily put one down and go on to the next.
>>97120653Why don't you try that out then? Fix a mini to a table, paint it up and report back to us how it goes.
>>97120653this is either bait or you have not painted a single miniature in your life
>97120653I wish people would try and paint like anything ever before posting
I'm going to enjoy picking up that free monthly model today, I think I'm gonna try to paint it in a volumetric style. >>97120467I've tried alligator clips on sticks for normal painting, but they're just too thin to hold firmly and comfortably. I use a tamiya paint pot and some blutack now.
Making a board cardboard and spakling.
>>97119628I quite like my prodicer handlesPaid like 20€ for two of themI don't batch paint so two is enough for me
