It should have a cutlass shaped hatchet. Comstar has the technology, they did it for the Atlas.
>>
>>97115403
>>97115421
The crits aren't the problem, it's a flavor rule representing too much recoil for an arm to handle. Superheavies can mount it in an arm for the flavor reason of being much bigger and sturdier.

>>
>>97115560
thats really fucking dumb, a heavy artillery would be a goodish use for superheavies
>>
>>97115560
It's not really a retcon so much as an omission. Since none of the things that can mount a Long Tom in core or Tac Ops even use crit slots, it wasn't assigned a crit value (it would be 30 though). Superheavies would only need 15 slots to mount it, and could do so in an arm and side torso. It just needs a rule entry somewhere that makes that official.
>>
>>97115653
Yep. I even built a tripod that could do it back before the change.
>>
>>97115653
I think it's better to use Thumpers or Snipers anyway for the sheer space saving value. At 10 tons and 4 slots each, you could put three Thumpers in one arm.
>>
>>97115704
No wait, that's Thumper Cannons. Still, you could fit up to four regular ones into a superheavy.

A Hera could replace the iHG with a Long Tom Cannon and just absolutely delete things like BA. 20 area damage to the hex, 10 to the surrounding hexes.

This thing with Arrow IV is why my Dragon II is nicknamed Toad Reaper.
>>
>>97115760
I say the Cannon specifically because it can use it on the same map sheet. It doesn't have the sheer stopping power due to its damage being broken up into 5 point clusters, but it being an AE weapon that you can fire directly or indirectly (like an LRM) makes it an interesting alternative to gauss and heavy gauss rifles.

I might be misremembering, but don't Superheavies cut down the number of necessary crit slots by half?
Like iirc Clan DHS was one crit slot per heatsink on an SH and it felt stupidly good.
>>
>>97116154
Yes, and that's why it's only 15 instead of 30 (which is what really disqualifies normal mechs, since they only have 24 spread across two locations and no normal equipment can be in more than two locations unless it's atomized like the crit slots for special armor or structute). By the same rule, ISXL engines only have two slots in each side torso, just like clan ones do for normal mechs.
>>
>>97116154
>>97116179
As do IS Heatsinks, two crit slots instead of three, allowing you to put on in a leg.

Having now assembled an IWM Viking, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The only real problem is with the lower body section, it doesn't line up cleanly with the mid-body. I'll have to stuff the gaps with modeling paste and it'll have an underbite. The dual chin guns look like little t-rex arms and the actual arms look like big ears.

It was a while ago so memory's fuzzy but it was 4v4, Lyrans vs Burds FCCW era. Rule was 1 of each weight class and 2 had to be 3025 designs no helmtech I dont remember BV.

Hauptmann B
Thunderbolt 5SS
Griffin
Scarabus 9T

Grand Titan 13M
Ostsol
Wolverine 6M
Venom

The Hauptmann and Grand Titan reenacted pic related, the Grand Titan had backed up against a cliff and I sent my Scarabus behind it. The same turn it shot my Hauptmanns engine out I kicked its damaged head off. The Venom and Wolverine went after the Thud and my Scarabus chopped the gyro out of the Venom, Thud gets a gyro crit and can't stand up anymore. Its now just my untouched Scarabus against his lightly scuffed Wolverine. I kited him around chipping away at him while he kept whiffing shots. Eventually I got his LT but he finally scored a large laser hit and took my left arm leaving me with no guns and just the hatchet and we called it.

The Griffin and Ostsol had died early on they did fuck all so I dont remember much about them.

Why do you all talk about artillery cannons as if thermobaric ammo doesnt exist? aka the only reason to take an artillery cannon over an Arrow IV? 'A LTC does 20/10 damage' no it doesn't, don't try to pretend you're rolling for atmo pressure before every match.
>>
i cant believe they paid faggots to write sodomy smut for a game aimed at preteens and teens
>>
>>97116586

are there any of the mechs from IWM *you* really enjoyed, are better than the CGL ones, aren't produced in the CGL line, etc?
>>
>>97116585
No one actually knows how anything in tacops works. It's a book of theoretical rules that have never been played, least of all by the people writing them.
>>
Who are the greatest mech techs, other than Fahad?
>>
>>97116585
An LTC does 20/10 regardless of atmosphere and also does it at like range 5-20 instead of the next mapsheet over
>>
>>97116661
Thermobaric ammo isnt even in tacops, its new home is IntOps AltEras. Upgrade your LTC to 30/20/10 for the low, low price of never fighting in a vacuum, which you never did anyway and don't try to tell me otherwise.
Using the direct or on-map indirect rules for artillery with an AIV is a better use of crits and tonnage in any other case than fuel-air arty cannons.
Not enough people using the actual fun alternate munitions for weapons. Acid SRMs. Swarm LRMs. Tandem-charge. Thunder anything. Play Clan Coyote as an excuse to field magpulse iATMs. Precision ammo makes LAC/5s good. Thermobarics do the same for arty cannons!
>>
>>97116705
Technically you can't use any of the fun ammo for artillery cannons, because whoever wrote their tacops rule hates fun. They left the door open for arty cannons to get special ammo by saying they could get it in a different book at some point, but they can't use any of the tacops stuff.

Vacuums don't affect cannons at all. Regular tube artillery has its range reduced, and that's it. If the ammo flops, then that's on the ammo, not the gun.

>>
>>97116654
IWM costs more because metal, I would get mechs not available in plastic of I was doing that.

For CGL get the IS Battle or Command they round out AGOAC into a full company really well.
>>
>>97116721
>>97116699
IntOps AltEras Pg.159. Artillery cannons are specifically called out as being able to use thermobaric ammo. LTC to 30, SnC to 20, ThC to 10. Stuff it in a bomb bay if you want. Half damage in thin atmo. No damage in thinner. Normal ammo is unaffected by pressure yes, but that means less-than-standard atmo is the only reason to ever use it, unless your BV is so tight you cant afford a multiplier on a few tons of ammo.
There is otherwise no reason to use an arty cannon over an AIV.
>>
Just so we're all clear on what we're even talking about
Artillery Cannons are cut down versions of tube artillery. They count as autocannons for the purposes of whatever rules care about gun types. Their range is measured in hexes. They can directly target units or hexes, and can indirectly fire using the same rules as LRMs. They only have one ammo type, generic artillery cannon rounds. Regardless of what they aim at or how, their generic ammo hits a whole hex as an area effect weapon, using normal artillery rules. That means that their damage is broken up into 5 point clusters, and everything in the hex takes that damage. The next row of hexes out takes damage-10, still in 5 point clusters, still applied to everything in those hexes. Since Thumper and Sniper do 5 and 10 damage respectively, they do not do any damage to the surrounding hexes. Long Tom does 20, and so it does 10 to the surrounding hexes. If it did 25, it would also do 5 damage to a third group. Atmosphere only impacts them if it would impact autocannons or indirect LRMs.
>>
>>97116767
Except for where IntOps finally gives them a new ammo type. Hooray.
>>97116758
They're a lot better than AIV if you want to shoot at something on the same hex map as yourself. Battle Armor that just got zoomed in by some annoying little 12/18/XX omnimech, for example

Artillery performs on-map attacks between 6 and 17 hexes at like +4. Might be line-of-sight only? But it means an AIV isn't exactly bad for this either. That's the same as firing an arty cannon at its long range bracket, which you will be doing most of the tike since of them only the LTC has decent range (and is as fat as an AIV, or fatter if you're Clan)

Nah, it's not that bad. The weakest point is definitely where the legs meet the body since it's just two little ball joints, and if you're going to pin, that's the place to do it, but basically everything else either has significant surface contact or built in pegs. The ones on the bottom of the legs were a little too long, but all the fiddly little guns fit snugly into holes where they're supposed to.

My problem is that painting metaltechs kind of sucks because they're all flat and boxy, but also covered in ridges and bumps. You don't have any flat ground but then the lines are so thin that it's hard to ink them in. I almost want to take putty all over them and de-vein the surfaces.

I also read a number of the stories from the various yearly anthologies and, on balance, they are no better or worse than a lot of official stuff. Moreover, it’s clear to me that the fan fic authors I read were at least as much as fans as BT as the authors writing the official stuff, if not more so.
If there were any shred of evidence that the anthologies are some kind of psyop to destroy BT, I guess I could get mad at that; but there really isn’t any such evidence. As such, I’m more inclined to believe that the kind of people who describe BT as “game aimed at preteens and teens” are the ones actually [trying to] run a psyop here.

I love asymmetry, but an arm full of heatsinks sounds off unless it was designed as like a box with a sub arm coming off it. Feels like it shouldn't be a real limb if it's a heat vent location. So one big gun arm, and then a supportive arm would be fine.

I enjoy reading official BT fiction but it’s the literary equivalent of Taco Bell.
And, in making that comparison, I am talking about the better novels.
I think the best one can generally hope for in BT novels is plot and character work; theme and insight are non starters for even the best-loved BT authors.
And yes, by these standards some of the Pride Month fan fics are alright.

Got to think of them while watching Combat Mecha Xabungle which has some really gritty looking mecha (not like the main one pictured here) that evoked BT for me.

It's not really plagiarism when the whole point of the game was to play with those designs since they were never going to get used in the US in the first place. The creators only found out about them because they were on Japan, not because they saw them in the US, because those designs weren't in the US at all. They specifically sought out and tried to license those designs, because they wanted to use them. It's was just the shit state of copyright law between two nations that fucked everything up.

What do you guys think about the goonhammer light mech rankings? Anything they missed or that you'd add? I don't really like ilclan and most of the entries were just reinforcing why going past 3067 was a bad idea.
>>
How is the Wraith Ubiquitous if it's only made by Capellans? It's not even that widely available. Does it use some parts from an actual Ubiquitous mech like the Bandersnatch does? I could maybe see it use Wolverine actuators or other parts
>>
>>97119897
It was first made by the FWL in the era where they were selling everything to everyone. The Capellans only got it later.
>>
>>97119876
The Goonhammer overviews are a decent place to start if you know nothing about the mech, and they usually grade the mechs alright. Some of the articles end up heavily biased though (banshee and marauder) and they’re written by a group of like 3 or 4 people so you’ll sometimes see inconsistent ratings across overviews.
>>
>>97119919
I'm trying to think of mechs they weren't freely selling and I'm coming up with... Albatross? That one Awesome variant meant for the DCMS and FWLM only? Maybe the Emperor?
>>
>>97119940
I don't like how they seem to make the more obnoxious mechs more common. I think a lot of people are just looking at the lists, picking the highest rated one, and going from there.
>>
>>97119919
But wasn't the FWL factory destroyed? The Kallon armor is still coming from the FWL, but the Cappies can't be selling it at nearly the levels needed to be Ubiquitous by themselves, especially since their variants are pretty much for themselves. The only thing I can think of is there being parts from an actual Ubiquitous mech, there were other factories contracted to make it that are unlisted, or the FWL somehow got a trade deal when Curtiss sold the design to the Cappies that has the Cappies stuck with making a fuck ton of them while the FWL gets resellers to distribute them wherever in the Sphere. That last one might explain why it's in the Periphery and Drac space, maybe the deal was to get a mech to forces that'd fight the Fedsuns and Lyrans.
>>
>>97119966
Quirks are assigned when the mech is first detailed, and when it was detailed it was made by a FWL factory that sells to anyone and everyone. Ubiquitous isn't like Obsolete where it has a date range.
>>
>>97119966
I assume that when Curtiss Hydroponics' mech division went bankrupt and sold their designs to the Capellans, as part of the deal they required the Capellans to provide a percentage of the production to FWL. The government probably wouldn't have allowed the deal to go through otherwise, given the historical animosity between FWL and Capellans.
>>
>>97120015
That seems to be the most reasonable implied way that parts could still be getting out there. Thinking about it, the FWL are probably getting a great deal out of it because they don't need to worry about a main factory in their space being attacked, but they still get to sell whatever they'd like from the Wraith however they'd want. If the TR6 and TR7 have the same quirks and availability as the rest of the Wraiths, the FWL would be able to sell advanced tech Wraiths without having to spend resources on making the expensive stuff.

The Lestrade family had instituted the practice of speaking Italian in their home, where I was a guest. I wanted a glass of water, and I wanted it cold. I told the servant I wanted it kalt, but the man did not understand me. I pantomimed cold and repeated kalt several times. When I thought he had it, I let him go on his way. Imagine my surprise when he returned with a steaming glass of hot water because the Italian word for cold is freddo, while the word for hot is caldo. He thought I was miming shivers because I was cold and that I wanted my water caldo."

I was thinking about how the VTR-9B is basically a jumping HBK-4G and I had the idea to see how some of the other introtech Hunchback variants scaled to 80 tons at 4/6/4. I started with the HBK-4J and ended up with a lot more free tonnage than I expected, upgraded the LRMs to 15s, and realized that this was looking like a Super Catapult in a different shape.

Anyways, there's 1 ton left, where would you guys put it? Upgrade the armor to make it a little less embarrassing for an 80 ton mech since it won't be hiding the entire way in like a normal victor? Add another ton of LRM-15 ammo so it can stay at range longer than the base Catapult? Another Heatsink?

Pretty sure their X and blog was wiped after they settled out of court with Pardoe. I remember it was posted here but I didn’t save the screen cap. I’ll check the archive.

Pardoe is definitely a spas and an ass, but it bothered me that a troll could fuck a BT author’s career and get away with it while Loren Coleman gets to enjoy his porch. To say nothing of the years of fucking annoying harassment of NEA here, who no one can argue deserved it.

He did it to himself. He was already being shielded from his own ranting and raving, they could have stopped hiring him to freelance the first time he got in a screaming match with his boss. Or the first time he got in a screaming match with a critic. Or a fan. Or the editors. Or other authors. Or his boss again. Or again. Or again. Or again, but now it's under Topps and they call themselves CGL. Or again but it's been over a decade of this. Or again. Or again but it's getting posted on social media. Or again. Or again. Or- oh, that one with the Urbanmech IIC and calling one of the customers a "flatulating butthead" followed by an insulting rant. Yeah, that's the one.

The Bear one is better than this although I do think PGI are getting better with cutscenes. Two of them are where credit is due are well very well done even if the voice acting is extremely phoned in in places.
>>97125844
PGI decided to troll the players just in case you are wondering as there's a mission where you have to take on a naval warship but parked it outside the map boundary at a distance that is just outside the range of the ER Small Laser meaning all those fags who were cheesing the game with ER Small Novas can't complete the mission. Its pretty hilarious to watch to be honest.
>>97125846
The characters are back to looking a bit like meth heads.

Well they're Wolves so they're always going to be dezgra pussies. They're more like a bunch of arrogant assholes sniffing their own farts which I guess is a very accurate take on the Wolves.

Lorewise it's a leftover barrelshroud from an attempt to also mount another gun, either a Small Laser or a Machine Gun. The weapon couldn't be mounted due to tonnage restrictions but they left the tube in place on the production model for some reason.

I tried reading some of the BT novels years ago and found them weak.
I grew up with my mother reading me Arthur C Clark and Robert A Heinlein. When I got good enough at reading, I picked up Clive Clussler, Andre Norton, and Frank Herbert.
I like Battletech because I like the game and I like the ability to build and modify mechs and vehicles to use in the game. (I like the FASA era art too.)

I'm assuming you're talking about a narrative driven scenario? Here's some of the one's I've loved over the years.
Things involving drop ships is always awesome. Rescuing one under siege, recovering a crashed one, trying to catch an enemy one on the ground before it can lift off are a few examples.
Classic military objectives are always a great options. Comms and logistics are always excellent targets.
One of the coolest campaigns I was apart of had a few missions where we acted as support for a special forces/spy team. Some of the missions were insertion and extraction actions, distraction and covering actions, and one time where I stole an enemy mech and made a run for it.

You still have something to live for."

I always wanted to see the SRMback revisited. Even if all you do is swap to DHS it frees up enough tonnage to mount four SRM-6s and be able to both run and fire all of them without heat buildup.

If you throw in an XL and Ferro-Fibrous you're looking at a 5/8 with 10 tons of armor, 24 SRM tubes and 4 MLs. Not many mechs are going to want to get stuck in a brawl with that.

What's a good complementary mech for the following lance?

Quickdraw -5M, Merlin -1B and a Ostsol -5M

I'm trying to keep the points cost down, but I'd really like to take those mechs. Maybe total 4500bv, Which leaves 790 to play with. I've got wiggle room to 'downgrade' the models of Quickdraw and Ostsol, but realistically nothing past 3060. I was thinking the Clint -2-3T(Denton) because I really like the LL idea and swapping out the other two heavies for cheaper versions. Otherwise, the stock Clint would work okay. Thoughts?

>What was the point of the Refusal War if you're just going to have Vlad Ward kill the Jade Falcon leadership and declare Wolf independence again?

They're Vlad's Wolves after that, not Ulric's Wolves. Also the Jade Falcons take their political gains making use of the Warden/Crusader split to the point of hubris, and that one great feat and illustrating the inability to maintain it or profit by it is one of the points of it all.

Back in the early 90s, a friend of mine created and ran a campaign that incorporated a full spectrum strategic campaign where most of the players were mercenary companies trying to defend a system from a clan invasion. We full on had Aerotech combat for air supremacy, hot drops with drop ships, complex logistics, the whole nine yards. The suit can be modified for regular humans somehow, they do it for one of the big name characters who's just a regular dude. It might require factory conditions though.
>>
>>97129362
I think, and don't quote me on this, that elemental armor can be piloted by normies with some adaptors, it'll just be clunky and unwieldly compared to when the intended pilots use it
>>
>>97129389
>>97129362
Elemental suits are canonically adjustible to a fairly wide range, with several spheroids having worn them. It seems possible that the designers just figured that freebirths would be put in them at some point.

You can recover elemental suits from the battlefield if anything kills the guy inside but leaves the suit merely damaged. Like if you have one where the head got taken off and another where both legs got taken off, you can build a functional one out of that. It's how the Inner Sphere went from no battle armor to functional mass produced copies in under two years

did the dlcs fix the base game's issue where once the tonnage cap maxes out anything lighter than 4 dires and a timby is suicide? the lack of mechs compounded with the game being balanced around max tonnage for the entire back half wore me out
>>
>>97129516
You already know the answer is no. Mechwarrior is fundamentally bigger is better and 100t is max so 500t is the end game. They'd have to fundamentally redesign how mech combat works to give lighter mechs purpose. If the last 20 years of mechwarrior hasn't done it, theres no hope future ones will.

I would like to see a much more crunchy, role based, approach too, but know the fandom would revolt that the game feels different from mechwarrior 2.

>ew is ubiquitous and can only be equipped on lighter mechs
>target tracking similar to eve online where big guns have a harder time tracking smaller targets effectively simulating tmm
>light guns for light targets, heavy guns for heavy targets
>mechs actually move like big clunky fuckers and their hit boxes are erratic at speed(shooting from them is slightly less erratic but still noticeable)
>jumping is much less static and has way more impulse, lower height depending on speed
>mechs can kick finally, and we bring back knockdowns
>blowing everything up is rarely the sole objective, and there are actually story missions where firing your weapons may in fact be rare

I'm not sure how they could have such a wide range for human heights, the users knee needs to roughly match up to the suit's knee joint, otherwise he's getting his shin broken in half. Same for the user's elbow and the suit's elbow joint.
At best, you would need to fabricate an entirely new lower leg and lower arm for each suit tailored to a small range of user heights.
It's really only the kind of BA where the user is housed entirely within the torso that wide height ranges without modification can make sense.
>>
>>97128973
Reminds me of this
>>
>>97129622
Call me a purist, but mechs are piloted. BAs are worn. If the primary actuation of the suits limbs aren't your limbs, or youre sitting in a control seat of some kind, youre in a vehicle/mech. I think a lot of the heavier BA are silly tiny mechs and not actually powered exosuits.

The advantage of lights is fundamentally not possible to do well in real time gameplay because it would require diceroll bad kinds of missing from the AI opponents, much less human ones. Even with a random spread applied to any weapon you would have to get to a silly extreme in order to simulate what lights could potentially do on the tabletop in scenarios.

MW gameplay simulates lore combat more accurately. An Atlas is worth a battalion of Stingers because they just aren't that hard to hit and can one shot or cripple them with every pass.
>>
>>97129990
The game map is the entire balance for mechwarrior. If they had more low hills and buildings and not just entirely rolling fields, skyscrapers, mech sized walls and sheer cliff faces, smaller mechs would be in partial cover more often. Too often you're either on the other side of a mountain, or everyone is standing out in the open.
>>
Like I've seen other people say they need to make the zeroing of weapons not instantaneous.
>>
>>97130001
Most late game missions in most battletech games are throwing so much tonnage at you that you'd never get anything done in a reasonable amount of time with the firepower light mechs bring, god help you if the mission has a time sensitive objective of some sort.

30+ without earning or having a chance of earning a blood name. Some people want a specific blood name so if they're waiting for one then it's considered okay if they're still in their 30s without one but they have to be talented enough that everyone knows they have a good shot at it.

Outside of Iceland the patronymic/matronymic naming convention has fallen out of favor centuries ago, and those names just because normal surnames. So it's not particularly unusual for, say, a Swedish woman to have Magnusson or something as a surname, since it no longer indicates that you're the son of a guy called Magnus and is instead just a generic surname. Same thing as people being called Smith but not actually working as blacksmiths.
Månsdottir is still weird, though, since as far as I know it's only patronymic names that have been turned into regular surnames.
