Why are TCGs like this?
>>
>>97130035
Often it's a meme or mascot card that is OP cause someone thought it would be funny to make the "broken" card look "cute." Or it's a weak monster have a swarm ability that makes it broken. You also have that classic forgotten card from years past that get broken when combine with newer cards.
>>
>>97130035
High power/cost cards are rarely meta shaping because the game needs to progress in a certain direction for you to even get the chance to play them. Low power/cost cards radically alter the entire trajectory of the meta because they come out first in every game.

>if your opponent blinks
Shitty reactive card that gives control over the effect to the opponent.
>you may [...] for free during your turn
Perfect player agency, costless and flexible at that. Godly card.
>>
>>97130035
Stronger cards have to have restrictive cost to prevent them from making the game unfun. This means most pro's won't play them since actually playing them will be a rarity.
Weaker cards that have low cost will generally see more play due to being the first cards to be played because it generates value the longer the game goes on so playing it early will give you more value and playing something early is generally a good idea so the best low cost creature will always see play.

TCGs purposefully include "Timmy cards" that look impressive to young and/or stupid players but aren't really worth the time/cost to field. Whereas once you get older and/or more experienced you start to value stuff like synergy, utility, and numbers.

Back in the 90's a classic turn 1 combo was dark ritual + hypnotic specter so you could start hammering the oppponent and messing up his hand right away.
>>
>>97130925
One of the main reasons I love the classic reanimator combo archetype in MTG is that it gives you a way to effectively use big ass stupid monsters. Slamming aurelia onto the battlefield field turn 3 via ardyn, the usurper, and using her combat trigger to create ANOTHER 5/5 with haste, lifelink, and menace and attack a second time in the same turn is just awesome.

One of the best things about tarkir:dragonstorm was how the dragons had a cheap breath weapon effect that could be cast warly on if you had too many dragons in your hand, and the dragon would come back around anyway.

>>
>Why is a card that I'll never get to play not as good as a card I can play on the first turn in every match?
>>
>>97130035
Top card is interactive, bottom card is not. Top card is higher cost and thus lets the opponent interact more times before it's played than the bottom card that's playable turn 1.

Card games in their entirety are just a race to make your deck as uninteractive as possible, and to deny the opponent as much agency as possible. Top is therefore a bad card or at best a sideboard card if the opponent's deck requires him to blink to win.
>>
>>97131974
Also bottom card lets you as the player generate interactions arbitrarily because there's probably some card out there that says "each time you eat garbage..." to combo it with.

Honestly this card that feels like an over tuned mana dork being mythical makes me so much more annoyed with its existence. Like the card's flavor and being intended as a slightly better mana dork really makes me feel like it was intended for be a lower rarity card but in the playtesting they realized it was busted as shit and instead of fixing it they just bumped it to mythical and called it a day.

I actually really like Lightning Bolt in its simplicity. Excellent exercise in the design space of the game that it exists in.

Variants that are slightly worse are more healthy though, I feel pretty confident in thinking. R for 2 damage at instant speed, R for 3 damage but it's at sorcery speed, 1R for 3 damage, etc.

In MtG, the problem with most fuckhuge/fuckhuge creatures that instantly win the game when played is that they have such a high manacost that by the time you could actually play it you either should be able to win regardless, or you've already lost. Hence why the best cards tend to be cheap stuff with strong effects for their cost, that you can play early to get a head start on your opponent. There's a reason why even in Commander, a format pretty much tailor-made for playing fuckhuge/fuckhuge creatures, one of the best and most iconic cards is "cost 1 mana, tap to generate 2 mana".
Now, huge and expensive creatures can be good if you have a way to cheat them in without paying the manacost, like in reanimator decks, but that requires you to specifically work around the intended limitations of such cards.

>>97136135
I disagree. you will hardly find a better deal than 3 damage for 1 red pip at instant speed.
It was so fucking good everything else was measure to it and immediately failed because Lightning Bolt is King.
They went to every length to nerf/shelve it away
>Went from common to uncommon
People still kept using it
>Made it rare
People didnt care, still used it because everyone has at least 24+ copies of the darn thing
>ended up with having to stop printing it because Mark Rosewater admitted the existence of Lightning Bolt was limiting creative space for the designers in any set it ended up being in
So now we have to live in a world where Lightning Bolt got turbonerfed into Lightning Strike, a subpar, terrible dogshit replacement.
>Shock?
Shock was always meant to be main boarded ALONG with Lightning Bolt, it was Baby Bolt for stuff you didn't want to was a Lightning Bolt for, such as Birds of Paradise.
>Keep Calm and Bolt the Bird
Shock is the better alternative because in a metagame where creatures with bonkers toughness like Kor Celebrant, Bayou Groff, Beloved Beggar are both cheap and resilient early game blockers
>>
>>97136135
It really hasn't. Even Galvanic Discharge is only situationally better in an energy deck, since it can't hit face.
>>
>>97136335
>>97136355
Bolt wouldn't see play in current standard because it's not a lesson
Bolt wouldn't see play in pioneer because it can't deal with prowess cards that can be pumped beyond 3 toughness with rage. Swiftspear + rage = 3 toughness = unplayable. Just pick push.
Bolt currently doesn't see any modern play and hasn't for the longest time. If you want to go face do something else, if you want to play removal play unholy fire, push, whatever.

Bolt just doesn't work as reliable removal, you can go face with it but RDW has access to boltweave, rage and other tools that make it redundant. Yes, it's more flexible, no it doesn't matter because you have more efficient tools that either have synergy with other cards or are barely worse side grades. 3 damage for r and a card isn't efficient enough

>>97136476
RDW was running Lightning Strike and Boltweave, it would 100% run Bolt. I don't think you understand just how format-warping it can be.
>Prowess
You need THREE spells to make Swiftspear immune (since they can just hit it with the 2nd trigger on the stack).
>>
>>97130035
playing something early/at low cost always beats out playing something late/at high cost
so many of the most broken effects revolve around getting more cards out first or getting more and more efficient resources earlier than your opponent, one big guy with a 'fuck you' effect will not matter when you die to a swarm of little shitter rats that cost next to nothing to dump onto the board five turns before you can play him

In YGO:
>Horf'Dakath isn't seachable
>requires your normal summon
>requires other setup bullshit
>gets rekt by handtraps
>you could make a better endboard with the investment
>Racoon is searchable and has a whole archetype around it
>eating garbage is the new top meta strat as it lets you negate the entire board at countertrap speed
>it gets abused in non-racoon decks to bring out an annoying boss/floodgate
In MtG:
>Horf'Dakath has several double colored mana symbols in its cost, making it unsplashable
>no ETB
>costs more than 4 mana, might as well not exist
>everyone sides "crypt of blinkmod" against it, as it lets you remove all blinks from the game
>no trample, gets chumpblocked
>Racoon enables several 2 card combos focused on the eating garbage mechanic
>eating garbage doesn't go on the stack
>you can eat infinite garbage, gain infinite life and make each opponent lose infinite life, by turn 3, with just racoon and one of other 4 cards with the same garbage abuse effect (you run playsets all 4 for redundancy)
In pokemon:
>Horf'Dakath uses several different types of energy to attack
>also a stage 2, to a shitty evo line
>everyone runs "blinkymo", a 150 hp non-ex basic with an ability that lets you disregard blinks if it's in the bench or active
>Racoon is a basic with 120 hp
>It's stage 2 has an ability that says "this pokemon may evolve directly from "Racoon" if you've eaten garbage this turn, you may attach 1 energy card from your deck to it for each time you've eaten garbage this turn"
>it has an attack that causes damage relative to how much garbage you've eaten
In One Piece:
>Horf'Dakath doesn't have any keyword abilities, and the blink ability is activated, dies to Teach
>6 cost, costly but inside cost-reduction/removal range
>off-meta color
>new Condoriano leader lets one blink ability cancel the last blink activated ability, if you keep blinking you don't lose
>Racoon gets abused by Zoro animal decks, as it's easily brought out by Chopper

The difference between (1) and (0) is much larger than you would think.
>>
>>97151749
The number 4 means it costs 7 mana to play - 4 of any color, and 3 which must be black
It will generally take 7-14 turns before you can play this monster, playing it will consume all your resources for the turn.

In YGO terms I think it would be something like
>10* DARK Fiend
>ATK 4000/4000
>Must be Normal Summoned using 3 DARK monsters as Tribute, cannot be Summoned/Set in other ways. When this card battles it inflicts Piercing damage. Can attack directly unless your opponent controls a Dragon, Winged-Beast or Wyrm. Cannot attack in the turn it is Summoned. Each Standby Phase you must Tribute 1 other monster you control or take 4000 damage.
>>
>>97158569
I'm assuming that even if it's usually a dead draw there's still some unconventional way to make use of something with a statline that high, like sacrificing it to power up something else.
>>
>>97158596
There's some ways, usually involving getting it in without paying the mana cost (there's more than a few cards that let you play a creature by paying life instead of mana). Also, while by modern standards LotP is very expensive for what it does, especially with a drawback of requiring you to sacrifice your other creatures or take damage, early Magic had relatively weak creatures so it was comparatively better back when it was printed (there's kind of a funny thing with Magic where some of the early non-creature cards are to this day among the best cards ever printed, but early creatures are almost universally dogshit).

Your math isn't mathing, bro. A creature with 3 toughness when it takes 3 damage.
Also, you're really suggesting that gruul prowess wouldn't swap out the burst lightnings for lightning bolt in a heart beat?
>Bolt currently doesn't see any modern play and hasn't for the longest time.
It gets played in Izzet Prowess. Other decks swap it out for Galvanic discharge.

Reminder that anyone who has ever said "timmy" thinks they're too clever to pay 3 mana for a 5/4 with upside and has lost games to people playing the obviously powerful creatures.

Get some snippers and learn how to use them properly. Take your time - it's not a race. If you want practice and you can vibe with transformers, try the Classic Class Blokees (not the blind boxes, the actual kits). They're easy to build, don't require glue or even snippers if you know what you're doing, and take maybe 20 minutes at most to put together, and look good without paint. Plus, they come with a light up feature that you can replace if it dies and they're 5-10 USD depending on when and where you buy them.
