Ok real talk. Do you think design choices like this were what ultimately killed AoS? Or were there other factors at play?

AOS is far from 'dead'. Its changed a lot since its initial release, too and is a pretty solid game overall now with a wide model range and many factions. In all the places I've gone to, its not as popular as 40K, but is vastly more played than any other tabletop wargame like Battletech, Song of Ice and Fire, Infinity/Warcrow, etc.

Fantasy battles was dead for close to a decade. And really what you mention is a big crux of its issue, it doesn’t have a target audience. The closest thing I can’t think of is fans of mmos like WoW because of some of the aesthetic, but even then it’s still not hitting the mark

AoS suffers from modern GW design philosophy which is ass backwards compared to how it used to work. That is to say they just have STLs made up using some key words and then suits decide which ones they think will sell and task the nerds with fitting them into the lore somehow. It is why the setting doesn't feel very cohesive because its not, and anything that actually works is a happy coincidence or more often than not just aping something from WHFB. The setting itself was also a poor choice in that it is basically a realm of chaos but everywhere which brings its own issues into play, though at least some effort has been made around that to make it more coherent and you can see where things are at in relation to each other. But overall it still just feels like some sort of soup haphazardly thrown together rather than a real world/setting that is lived in. At its core the idea of the world after WHFB isn't necessarily a bad one, but the manner in which it was made, assembled, and developed is pants on head retarded and basically cannot be recovered at this point.
>>
>>97146802
> At its core the idea of the world after WHFB isn't necessarily a bad one, but the manner in which it was made, assembled, and developed is pants on head retarded and basically cannot be recovered at this point.
I disagree that it can't be recovered, I just don't think there's much of a drive to give it a push.

GW is just also unwilling to do stuff like they used to do in the past by actually changing the lore in a major way. For all of the whining people do about 40K being ruined, any changes made since the end of 3th edition are small fries in comparison to Rogue trader and second edition ALONE.
>>
>>97146832
>do stuff like they used to do

The people who used to make Warhammer read books. Now the people who make Warhammer read only Warhammer books, if at all. Garbage in, garbage out
>>
>>97146801
Surely you have some data to back up such drastic claims? Maybe GW sales figures? According to you fagolas AoS dies at least twice on any given week, yet it's still around and getting steady releases.
>>
>>97144970
AOS suffers because it isn't designed like a wargame, it is designed like a videogame. 40k also has this problem, and with 3rd edition so does 30k. The only wargame GW produces now is TOW, and who knows how long that will last for.
>>
>>97146832
Given the extent of what would need to be changed it would barely be AoS anymore. I agree with you to an extent though. Some things could be done but it would have to be an extensive overhaul, to the point where they would basically be AoSing AoS to make nuAoS.
>>
>>97146882
>3rd edition so does 30k.
Jesus christ, there's a third edition already? Didn't that shit come out like five years ago?
>>
>>97146902
2nd edition did yeah. I don't know how familiar you are with GW but since around 2017 they've been pushing more and more of their games into a mandatory 3 year edition cycle. It sucks
>>
>>97146854
>The people who used to make Warhammer read books. Now the people who make Warhammer read only Warhammer books,
Well, obviously. Inbreeding is a epidemic issue in virtually all genre fiction. Part of the reason why WHFB declined is because most of the people who gave it it's unique historical flavor left.
>>
>>97146890
Eh... I don't know. I think it probably wouldn't be more significant than going from second edition 40K to third edition (Lorewise, anyhow). Most of the core concepts are fine, it's just that they really need to get a better vibe down for the universe as a whole.
>>
>>97146956
>it's

Literacy also continues to be an issue here
>>
>>97146854
>>97146956
Part of the issue is that lore isn't dictating the design to begin with like it used to be. Before it was some creatives sitting around thinking about what might be missing from the setting or faction and then thinking up stuff to fit into it, which would then be passed to the model/art designers to bring to life. That isn't how it works now as instead you have contractors given a couple keywords to just make something and then whichever the suits choose for final release has to be hamfisted into the lore and rules by others. And even if the lore people weren't probably retarded themselves there is only so much one can do when stuck with that approach to things. Like some poor fuck had to look at Primaris Desolators and work out how to justify their existence and place in setting as is.
>>
>>97145079
there is nothing political about hating age of shitmar, i am a socialist and i still think it's an objective downgrade over fantasy in every single way. the models suck, the lore is shit, the rules are shit, and the way it was introduced on top of the ashes of a much more developed and interesting setting was just the cherry on top.
>>
>>97146927
Seems the release I'm thinking of is the second edition. To answer your question, no, I'm not very familiar with GW properties. Absolutely retarded publishing schedule.
>>
>>97147014
>Part of the issue is that lore isn't dictating the design to begin with like it used to be.

Delusional
>>
>>97147038
>there is nothing political about hating age of shitmar,
To be sure. But hating it because of blacks does mean you are far right. Not just because of politics, but because far right people are retarded.

Being far right is less of a political stance and more a question of sapience.
>>
>>97146963
RT to 2nd Ed was the bigger change. 2nd Ed to 3rd Ed was primarily mechanical in nature and focusing more on some grim vibes that were already present. And arguably the significant tonal shift that is attributed to 3rd Ed happened well after the edition change itself. I get what you mean though, but in this case at least the change between 2nd/3rd still left the physical setting itself largely unaltered. Whereas I would see AoS needing to basically scrap everything they have now and rebuilding from scratch from the ground up by people that have at least some semblance of a reasonable idea of what goes into coherent world building. However even if they did that and it was somehow perfect it would still be hard for them to shake the legacy issues of the IP and win people over to it, hence kill it entirely and build up something new.
>>
>>97146802
This is always how it worked though, see the infamous story of gw higher ups asking the perrys to keep making chorf (?) hats bigger
>>
>>97147061
We could say the same about their mirror opposite. It's just stupidity with a Human Face
>>
>>97147061
most people don't hate age of shitmar because it has black people in it, they just point to it as "wokeness gone mad" or some shit. i cringe a little with how much some people in /wfg/ care about characters being painted black, but i understand that it's not because they hate black people but because the setting doesn't really have many brown people in it and the empire/bretonnia/chaos would be mostly white dudes.
the reason people hate age of shitmar is that it is a completely and utterly inferior setting and product to warhammer fantasy
>>

>>97147156

>lore isn't dictating design like it used to be
Lmfao warhammer started because they needed an excuse for all the existing citadel miniatures for games like runequest, dnd, whatever the fuck to be playable in the same wargame
Miniature first ""lore"" second has been the driving ethos behind warhammer as a whole from day fucking one
Fakegrogs need to stay in their lane and post wiki blurbs in /v/ or whatever the fuck they do
>>
>>97147065
>Whereas I would see AoS needing to basically scrap everything they have now and rebuilding from scratch from the ground up by people that have at least some semblance of a reasonable idea of what goes into coherent world building
I don't hate the realm idea, the main issue is mostly just making the various realms feel like places people actually live and, even more difficulty, getting that across through what is a war game. Like, as much as it gets tiresome to have every game of 40K take place in ruined cities most 40K terrain you can buy does a very good job selling the setting. AoS terrain... well, some of it can be nice but on average it really doesn't give the impression of a living world. That's why I think the main shift can largely come about tonally rather than literally rebuilding the entire setting with another end times style shake up. In general I think blowing up the old world will always be a mistake. A softer reboot honestly could have worked out pretty well. With that said, it's also a bridge that got burned long ago and at this point trying to do it again won't please anybody and just make Fantasy seem like a very unstable brand.

Also I'll admit that I've grown so utterly sick and tired of generic fantasy (WHFB just BARELY gets away with it) that anything even slightly different appeals to me nowadays.
>>

There is no mirror opposite. For much the same reason vermin doesn't have a mirror opposite.

>>97147146

Which is a dumb far right opinion.

>i cringe a little with how much some people in /wfg/ care about characters being painted black, but i understand that it's not because they hate black people but because the setting doesn't really have many brown people in it and the empire/bretonnia/chaos would be mostly white dudes.
People are honestly pretty retarded about that in general, and I'm going to blame that mostly on 40k players (Not to say that fantasy players are perfect either in that regard). Or at least the type of 40K player that gets mad when you paint Guiliman as a Salamander or the like.
>>
>>97147219
Well, that's the problem with the ideologically possessed.
>>
>>97147242
Being far right is largely not a matter of ideology but of mindset. They don't really believe in anything, they just know what they hate.
>>
>>97147253
I agree that most people on the far right are anti intellectual. I also think that most people on the far left are psuedo intellectual. When every question you have is met with "read more theory" and "omh he doesn't know!?" you realise that you're just dealing with upper middle class sprites who feel bad that their dad drives an Audi.
>>
You can be right wing and like aos. The problem is aos is on paper the perfect leftist setting. It deconstructs every regular fantasy trope it can, or at least did at first. Anyone could be anything, no rules to adhere to. Female dwarfs being front and center? You can do that? Transgender commander of a free city? Who’s stopping you! The problem is, it creates a clusterfuck of a setting that never takes off because people like media that mirror their own values, which aos most assuredly does not
>>
>>97147265
>I also think that most people on the far left are psuedo intellectual.
I think a large chunk of the left, both center and far, are pseudo intellectuals, and I say that as a leftist. It's very easy and fun to feel smarter than christian hicks, edgy ayn rand libertarians, and Trump supporters but it also doesn't really get anybody anywhere.
>>
>>97147306
Realistically if you're still in that paradigm that assumes ideology precedes values and that you have to take the same approach to every problem, you're useful to somebody

> It deconstructs every regular fantasy trope it can, or at least did at first
It really doesn't. Warhammer fantasy is genuinly more deconstruction for the most part.

>Anyone could be anything
Which, to be fair, is a huge benefit for both the hobbyist and the modeler. What's funny about it though, at least for me, is that GW is taking active steps to prevent the kind of fun it should encourage from a hobby perspective. Right now Old World is significantly more friendly to kitbashing, which is wild to me.

>t creates a clusterfuck of a setting that never takes off because people like media that mirror their own values, which aos most assuredly does not
I blame the lack of satire in that regard as well. 40K is really pretty similar, as is fantasy to a even lesser extent, but both of them feel more inherently satirical in their content so it's much easier for people to project stuff onto them as it suits them.
>>
>>97147330
>Right now Old World is significantly more friendly to kitbashing, which is wild to me.

Wrong attitude
YOU get to decide what game is friendly to kitbashing as do your friends
>>
>>97147319
Yes, but I also get why a lot of people cling very closely to their ideology. Especially in the age of identity politics being so central to people. If society collapsed tomorrow I honestly think a lot of people wouldn't be able to mentally handle the fact they would have to change the way they live and act to survive.
>>
>>97147338
>Wrong attitude
Okay, fair enough, you are correct in that regard.

>YOU get to decide what game is friendly to kitbashing as do your friends
True. And I will admit that AoS players are pretty chill in that regard. ToW players as well though. Really, it's only 40K players that can get genuinly pretentious.
>>
>>97147340
Ideology wouldn't matter so much. Having fruit trees, chickens and cordial relations with your neighbours is a better bet

>>97147348
I would never be in the position where someone would tell me my model is "wrong" because of a headswap. I can't get into that, and that is the kind of thing people need to be gatekeeping.

>>97147377
>I can't get into that, and that is the kind of thing people need to be gatekeeping.
Agree.
>>
>>97144970
Dwarf sub-races certainly was a choice
Dwarves are always a niche favorite for people, and those people like generic dwarves, not weird versions of them
They're not like Elves where variation was baked into them from the start and their fans can't get enough of them
but no one really wants an entire army of naked manlets
CoS Dwarves doesn't count for shit
steampunk dwarves does illustrate the future fantasy setting of AoS, but the more I look at the faction the more i think "does this really need to be dwarves?"
and the people who like Chorfs are hardcore WH fans, not casuals just getting into the hoby

>>97147219
>Which is a dumb far right opinion.
not liking performative DEI garbage is not right wing, if anything it just objectifies minorities and therefore left wingers should hate it just as much.

AoS looks like a kids World of Warcraft game you would buy at Target. The models look so retarded and cartoony
>>
>>97147480
It is a strange decision when you scrutinize it. “What if the Engineer Guild built airborne cities to survive the apocalypse?” is a neat idea, but as a faction there’s really only one way to collect then as an army. Ironically enough the FyreSlayers avoid this with raising the magma lizards.

Comparing 1st/2nd edition WHFB to middlehammer when we are talking about setting and model design interaction shows you are the retard here. We all know how Warhammer came to be, but it didn't stay that way and became its own setting with its own product. On top of which the point you are trying to make is wrong since they weren't designing rules for specific models to cram into their game, they made a ruleset that tried to encompass as many ideas as possible so people could use whatever. They weren't handed some fancy pants model and told to fit it in somewhere and make rules specifically for that.

It isn't just the wokeness or the shitty models it's that the world is starting into a inflationary depression. GW are pricing themselves out of their audience. Just look at their last releases, over-priced for what you get and people have to decide if they want their streaming services and starbucks or do they want a $300 board game that they have to assemble and paint and maybe play once or twice before they realise it was made to sell minis and not actually play.

Fantasy and 40k are already drawing from stuff that's second hand recycled folklore and mythology repackaged for a consumer product.

AOS is like a xerox of a xerox of a xerox.

It is too far from the source; it has lost the essence, which was still present in the prior iterations.

Early WGFB and 40k ooze pure SOVL in a way that AOS, being born in the age of digital art, and corporate decision making, will never benefit from.
>>
>>97154244
>Derivative OF a derivative.
Yeah, I know. I'm mostly just ribbing you a bit, but fantasy took a lot of stuff from moorcock, dnd, runequest, all of which are inspired by stuff like tolkien (ofc), but also conan and some miscellaneous shit like ck lewis and what have you. And all of that stuff in turn harkens back to generic folklore elements, as you mentioned.
Same goes for 40k, with the extra level of it being derived from warhammer fantasy too of course.
But yes aos was created in a time where the art direction of warhammer in a general had been a major step back. Doesn't help that one of the main guys behind aos' early art direction was that one guy responsible for some of the worst warhammer art you've ever seen, his pieces for warhammer and 40k were tertible too. Someone made a whole thread about him a few months back, just genuinely terrible digital style.
AoS did have kevin chin for a while, who has a very striking and unique style (picrel) although it only really works for focused scenes (duels, portraits, etc). I haven't seen it tried on big battle scenes or whatever, where guys like kopinski did so much for the visual 'feel' of fantasy.
>>
>>97154459
I was always an Ian Miller acolyte, over even Blanche.

And yeah, I know all about Moorcock and Runequest.

That's a heady mix of influences; any setting you can name would benefit from more of a Runequest treatment; but then, I'm biased, because I'm an amateur of anthropology, so a Staffordian approach appeals to me innately.

That's a fairly kinetic looking duel scene, but yeah; it's mostly silhouette, which is how it conveys motion so effectively, and with mass battle scenes, or even just a few more characters in focus, silhouette-style becomes harder to read.

From what I've learned recently the situation was likely closer to this:

>accountant and execs hears all the following
>>an international women's group will give a nice fat grant if a woman is the prominent figure in the art and model line
>>a black group will give another fat grant if blacks are heavily represented
>>A good DEI score will lower the interest rate on our business loans

Literally everything about Smegmar is shit, and they tried to force people into it by deliberately ignobly end the previous setting and pretend that there was a logical continuation (there isn't; End Times/Smegmar is a completely different setting that is incompatible with WHFB/WH40k).

It was always doomed to only be bought into by tasteless paypigs and thus ultimately circling the drain.

The biggest mistake AoS ever did was their godawful setting. The lore itself can be pretty good at times in a sort of Bronze Age mythological way. But the setting as presented offers no ability for players to comprehend the world nor the weight of anything.

Here’s what I mean; can anyone tell me where people live? Like, humans? What does the countryside look like? Each Plane is meant to embody a Wind, so how can like… A field of flowers exist? How do farms work? People in the Plane of Fire, they can’t live there can they? It’s all on fire.

And I’m sure some fanboy can Ackshually this with an explanation, but that’s the excuse which proves my point; people looking at AoS are looking at a pure expression of wargame conceit. People make war for the sake of it, fancy models are called heroes despite their deeds holding no real weight. Age of Sigmar is the He-Man of settings, it’s the DnD 4e of wargames where you read it and are never sucked into a world, and it reminds you every step of the way you’re just bashing $80 toys together.

And what sort of world-building have they done since those first few years? All I see are women and niggers. That’s the entire setting to me and most everyone else. Every Sigmarine without a helmet is a woman, every character without a helmet in center-piece art of book art is black or female. OP is evidence of this, the trailer where they showed the Skaven was like 80% women (and I don’t care if that helmet fuck is some badass dude, no face no point.) So now it’s not just a game about corporate products, it’s a game about corporate products where everyone is lame and gay.

Amazing.

none of these are true statements about the setting, but because you have a predisposition against AoS and an agenda to push, you are unwilling to do the engagement necessary to see that they're incorrect.

>design choices
I think the minds that led to these design choices were what killed AoS.
Make no mistake, my modern audience friends absolutely love... the idea of owning AoS models... but no-one young does, and no-one who will bear children will think it's a good idea to buy.
In fact, the funniest thing is the only modern audience friends I have who are interested in AoS actually owned Fantasy models back when they were younger. The rest? Ew, Warhammer, gross!

And it's going to kill the Old World when they get a range refresh. See image related. They couldn't help themselves when the entire point was bringing back the models people were advertised in Total Warhammer.
>>
Wdym killed AOS? Isn't it getting new stuff?

It's about as good a containment ground as the Black Library.
Every model past a certain date has the malign modern influence.
>primaris
>votann
>astra militarum
>femme + androgyny 'stealers
>kill team
>blood bowl
>old world
>modern haircuts on everyone
>female as sergeant, frequent afro-americans, noses and hair are now modelled with ethnicity in mind (sometimes painted by the store painter as intended by the modeller, sometimes given the wrong race)
>things that are "stronk chuddy" in their eyes, like the signature 40K guard model of the commissar is... a limp and miserable, uninspired glob of plastic
It's hard to tell when something was made but when it's a full male, full (storefront paintjob) white squad, you know it's from the beforetimes.
It's like someone had a monkey's paw and wished GW could be good at painting women, damn the consequences.

How does this happen? There was a before time and an after time. It's so stark that it's like the entire workforce, including executives, were fired and replaced with other people, but they weren't, and they aren't bodysnatchers pretending to be these people.
How is the company not immune to say moving in the opposite direction, or a completely new one we don't have a word to describe yet that offends "both sides" of the internet, and to continue to chug on regardless thanks to how many people buy the product like every other ancient product that's been changed more in the past 15 years than the entire 20th century?

That's kind of the thing, though? I know this. I've done this. I've got a field I till every spring, and world-building I'm doing as we speak for a game I'm running next year. I organize things. I do things.

But I'm alone. We all are. King Arthur belongs to everyone. The Odyssey belongs to everyone. Decolonize Shakespeare. Decolonize the hero's journey. White food is awful, get rid of it. White organizing is dangerous, we must get rid of it. Mind your man-spreading. Mind your mansplaining. Mind your microaggressions. Is your baby racist? Probably. Cheer when women outnumber men at college. Boo when men outnumber women in any field. Love the black woman on TV, hate the white man they portray as a treacherous snake. Old white men need to leave this hobby, Indian men need to come in and replace your dad at work.

And if you call out any of this, you're a bigot. Racist. Misogynist. Nazi! I work so hard, anon. I do, I make things and I do things. These aren't idle hands bitching about an idle life. This is despair, anon. I have no faith in the future, or in this country. I have no faith in anything but the people around me and the neighborhood I grew into. Every day is a new reminder that there's nothing really out there for me, and the sheer number of discontented people we see every day on this site and offline suggests I'm really not alone.

It unironically is, returd. Scandinavia and England have garbage food, the worst in the world. The actual good food countries in Europe, France, Italy and Spain, all stole it from Africa and Levant during Roman and Exploration times. Why do you think, dear clown, people were willing to literally risk their lives to go trading for Asian/African/American spices? And said spices were worth lots of gold? Yes kiddo, because local food was so SHYTE the rich sent literal shiploads of precious metals out of Europe each year to get the foreign stuff, and now ignorant, retarded clownbeciles like you look at all this stuff and think all the stolen bits are "yours".

Even fucking potatoes and grains for bread are from other continents clown, the literal cheap STAPLES had to be imported because nothing local was anywhere near as good. Your plate is one of the most DEI things in existence, for people with clue, that is, for inbred racist plants and recipes from east Asia and south America are wHiTe because you failed to pay any attention in school or similar racists writing your school box "conveniently" erased all the inconvenient bits. Oh, wait, we're not supposed to point that out because then imbeciles like you start rabidly screeching to drown out the facts. Or maybe I am wrong, and you really do eat "white" Euro only diet, namely turnips, grass, and parsnips, that's about it. >Rogue trader and second edition ALONE
Are you still peddling this garbage? RT changed over time in White Dwarf and supplements and was already pretty much exactly 2nd Edition's fluff by the time 2nd came out, with the only actual meaningful acts taken for the transition being explicitly abandoning a few fringe bits of material that nobody except a tiny handful of groglarpers gives a fuck about from the very very beginning of RT. The setting in 2nd is also entirely consistent with 3rd & 4th, the latter merely expanded on what was there the retcons were similarly few and minor - it wasn't until 5th edition and the push to make Heresy gaming A Thing that they actually began making sweeping retcons and inserting garbage that didn't belong.

Look I know the senile faggots who worship RT like to pretend it was frozen in aspic about 3 weeks and four days after the initial release, but the truth is the version of the IP you worship never actually existed, it was something you invented in your mind because GW chose to publish the material they had already developed piecemeal.
