Is there a shop that mainly sells metal/tin figures?

I saw a couple of them on Temu, and now I want more.
>>
>>97161671
Only if you are an Australian.
>>
>>97161734
I am Austrian, that's probably close enough.
>>
>>97161671
Yes many. Go ask in /awg/ they will hook you up. Off the top of my head there is crooked dice I bought some fantasy minis from them and can say they are very nice white metal.

I'm writing a paper on the Austrian balloon bombs of 1849 and the Military museum there has the only examples in the world on display.
Unfortunately, they haven't gotten back to me via email, their website has no images of the bombs and the database is down, video and photo tours of the museum end before the naval hall or don't focus on the bombs, the wayback machine doesn't have the images saved and general googling only pulls up artistic depictions.
BUT:
They describe the bombs as being on display in their description of the naval hall. I know they have them. That's what makes it mythical. They exist and yet there is no documentation of them outside of a 2008 PBS documentary which shows a png of the bombs for a few seconds.

My quest is thusly to go out and get pictures of them and their description.

I can't offer much as a reward but in a few hours I will go take pictures of some old and unprovenanced metal figures my grandparents gave me when they moved into a smaller home. I'll post them either way though so it's not really a reward I suppose.

Here is where they mention the balloons on the museum's site:
https://www.hgm.at/en/visit-our-museums/museum-of-military-history/exhibitions/austrian-naval-power
>>
>>97162541
When's the paper due?
And have you tried asking /k/ ?
>>
>>97162582
Monday
I've never been to /k/ but that's a good idea
I have more than enough written and drawn sources for it to not be a problem, and the aforementioned pbs photograph. It still would be cool to perhaps see.

I don't have that much money but I appreciate you being forthright about your requirements.
What I do have are ancestral heirloom miniatures. I tried to find manufacturer information on them but the only text they had is PEWTER in small font on the bottom. I am only 30% sure they're even supposed to be used for tabletop instead of display since most of the other pewter figures are angels and landmarks.

guy with the wings and feathered helm is a Wind Lord Hero from Ral Partha, which can be purchased here.
https://ralparthalegacy.com/products/50-0785?_pos=34&_sid=76f2ce33e&_ss=r

>>97161671
Are you ok with pewter or do they have to be tin? Pewter is much more common to find than tin. There are a LOT of companies that use it and catchall lead free 'white metal', I could give you a pretty comprehensive list.
>>
>>97163541
SHould have said regarding >>97163257, they're likely recasts if they dont have sculptor names, company abbreviations, product codes or a year stamp on the bottom. Sometimes these recasts are given official license to use the molds, sometimes not. Surprised they dont have fake gems in them if that is indeed the case.
>>
Reaper Miniatures has a large catalogue of metal minis
If you want to go retro, look at Iron Wind Metals or Ral Partha Europe; they have a license to make old Ral Partha miniatures.
>>
>>97163641
seconding iron wind metals, they've got new stuff but they're also still producing all their sculpts from the 80s iirc

I'm wondering how the hell my grandparents got a hold of these since neither of them even knew what wargaming was until I got into it in my youth. The cabinet of curiosities I ended up with is mostly China dolls.
>Fake Gems
Funnily enough some of the ones I didn't post do have those. I didn't post them because I figured that those ones definitely weren't tabletop.
>>
>>97163920
That might confirm it then! They were sold in a lot of different places; headshops, gift and souvenir shops, gas stations, malls, by mail order catalogue, online, at faires and ren fests, etc. They could have run across them anywhere, out of the way hole in the wall shops used to have extremely varied and weird offerings.

Reaper has a couple of metal lines.
>>
>>97164207

Here's a list I compiled of cheapish companies. Most sell metal, there's a few plastic and resin only stores in here but not many.

-Em4 (48 orcs or dwarves for 20 dollars/16 pounds makes these guys THE best deal around)
-Forlorn Hope Games
-Battlezone minis
-Mirliton (all 4 of the above and many others carry the old grenadier minis. The first three are cheaper but Mirliton has most of the range.)
-Reaper Bones
-Turnkey minis
-The Viking Forge (contain lead)
-Essex Miniatures (contain lead)
-Irregular Minis (shop is on the bottom banner of the site)
-Dark Alliance (1:72/20mm scale)
-Caesar Miniatures (1:72/20 scale)
-Midlam Minis
-Perry miniatures
-Crusader Miniatures
-Pulp Figures
-The Assault Group
-Fenris Games
-Impact Minis (carry a lot of ranges that would otherwise be lost)
-Old Glory
-Ral Partha Europe
-Denizen Miniatures
-Iron Wind Metals (have gotten pricy)
-Ral Partha Legacy
-North Star Military Figures
-Black Tree Design/EOE Orbis (prices vary wildly - extremely unreliable shipping)
-Mantic (army packs are around 3.50 per mini)
-Scotia Grendel
-Wargames Atlantic
-Gripping Beast (the plastics especially)
-Diehard minis
-Prince August (Carries the old Warzone figures)
-Ramshackle Games
-Copplestone Castings
-Emperors Choice Miniatures
-Alternative Armies ( 15mm, 28mm)
-Northumbrian Tin Soldier
-Mageknight (these and the next 6 entries are all available via ebay)
-D&D boardgame pieces (legend of drizzt, ravenloft, wrath of ashardalon, elemental evil, etc.)
-Heroquest
-Battle Master
-Dreamblade
-Crossbows And Catapults
-Checkpoint Models
>>
>>97167069
Then here's a list of U.S. manufacturers just in case. if you live overseas these are next to useless to you, sorry.
Forgive repeats.

-reaper
-old glory
-Mageknight lots off ebay
-turnkey miniatures
-rebel minis
-Dark Alliance (1:72/20mm scale)
-Khurasan Miniatures
-Impact Minis

damn that's quite something. thanks!
>>
>>97161671
I use the following, and only buy good quality metal miniatures (ie with faces where you can accurately paint the features, especially the eyes):

Reaper (excellent quality): https://www.reapermini.com/

Badger Games (large selection of miniatures from 92 (!) small US/European manufacturers): https://badgergames.com/

Ral Partha Legacy (for old Ral Partha, and they just bought RAFM miniatures as well: https://ralparthalegacy.com/

I also buy old Citadel minis (1980s) on EBay

I can recommend all three.
>>
>>97167077
Two more: Kromlech and Mirliton

Mirliton are ex-Grenadier miniatures
Kromlech produce a mix of crazy stuff (orcish rocket-launcher halftrack, anyone?)

Both available via Badger Games (https://badgergames.com/)

>>
>>97167597
You got it! I just ordered a few of their Future Wars metal minis and they arrived in NYC in about a week.
>>
Word of advice: buy in person if you can. Images give you a general idea of what a figure looks like but if your focus is "getting a nice mini" as opposed to "I need some skeletons" or "I need this unit for my army" then you really have to look at it in person. If you find one that's really good, look up other sculpts by the same sculptor.
>>
>>97167674
Or at least google around for other people's painted examples. Unfortunately a lot of older metal minis can be poorly documented, and some stores(looking at YOU, Iron Wind metals and Old Glory) use postage stamp sized jpegs from 2000 for all their products which makes it even harder to make out details.
>>
>>97163257
boobies
>>
>>97167710
Good advice. At Reaper, I've had good minis by Gene Van Horne, Werner Klocke, Kev White, Bobby Jackson and others.

Some folks don't like Werner Klocke's sculpts (can be a little racy), but I love them.
>>
>>97167674
Popular & Highly-Rated Sculptors

Bobby Jackson: Known for quirky, characterful figures, great detail, and ease of painting, often making people enjoy the process.
Julie Guthrie: A long-time favorite, excellent with dynamic female figures and unique character concepts (like the Berkeley mini).
Jason Wiebe: Famous for creatures, monsters, dwarves, and detailed fantasy beasts.
Sandra Garrity: Praised for heroes, fantasy characters, and beautiful sculpts.
Bob Ridolfi: Valued for beautiful, detailed work across many fantasy genres, including undead.
Werner Klocke: Acclaimed for realistic, natural poses (contrapposto) and lifelike elven figures.

Other Noteworthy Names
Tom Meier: Beloved for classic, lovely older pieces.
Mark Copplestone: Known for work on various lines, including Celtos/Urban Mammoth.
Tim Prow: A popular name in the sculpting community.
Gene Van Horne: Another key contributor to cavalry and fantasy figures.

>>97167850
They don't tag it Clockenbooty for nuthin'. Also damn, Reaper's tag system has gone to absolute shit. I genuinely want to get on the forums and BEG THEM to give me temporary permission to mess with and fix it...

>>97167941
Their product ranges are located at the bottom of the page. They hail from an era of the internet when there was no standard of web design, so it was just thrown together and archaic. Think of it as adding to the experience. Their last news update is from 12/09/2025 so they should still be in business.

Throwing my own opinions into the ring
>Sandra Garrity
Also known for *very* intricate textures, especially feathers. She's done stuff like the Forge of Ice peacocks and about half of the angel minis out there. Exceptional animal anatomy, tends to smooth and bland human faces

>Bobby Jackson
Is a competition-level painter and deliberately sculpts all of his stuff with brush-like tools so he can be sure to get in there. I'm about 50/50 on his stuff, but what I like I really, really like. Generally good posing. For better or worse he has an extremely consistent style, especially with humans

>Kev White
His wife and his buddy run a SHIT business. Had a few rough years early on (mostly stuff he did at Heartbreaker for Chronopia and late 1990s GW), pretty much anything he's sculpted in the last 20 years is fucking awesome. Really likes working with oddball body shapes and sizes and doing portraiture, so if you want a mini of Ving Rhames or Bato the cyborg or a walking pug-dog with a plasma cannon he's very much your guy. Excellent anatomy, faces, and weapons, very good textures on most of his work. Sometimes lazes out on posing

>Tim Prow
One of the OG skaven, undead, and demon sculptors, then worked for Heartbreaker for ages. Did a significant chunk of the Warzone and Void lines before he struck out on his own. Ral Partha Europe and Impact (if they're still up) both carry a bunch of his stuff

>Klocke
Excellent posing and very good at female bodies. Tends to have very angular faces with hit-and-miss facial features, not as good with men. Also does pretty good steampunk gear and lace texturing. Most of his work is at Reaper

>Bob Olley
Well-known oldhammer sculptor, kind of the Erol Otus of minis. Extremely distinctive, craggy and gnarled style that's great for drybrushing and works really well for trolls. Check Ral Partha Europe and Reaper in particular. Pic related
>>
>>97169106
(Continued)
>Mark Copplestone
Does varied, characterful, and often funny subjects. He's definitely gotten better over the years, his early stuff is quite blobby. Guns in particular are often poorly-detailed: I replace them with weapons from other lines. North Star, Crooked Dice, and Wargames Foundry all have some of his stuff. Great post-apoc

>Honorable mentions of useful companies
Grey for Now Games (mostly samurai), Skull and Crowne along with the guys at Antediluvian (good medieval things and stop-motion dinosaurs), Heresy Minis (awkward SF but fantastic fantasy), Prince August (formerly Heartbreaker's casting-house), Knightmare (does really good stuff but it's eye-wateringly expensive), Check Point (some really good stuff, a lot of chaff)

>You probably shouldn't
I love the detail and posing on Zenit Miniatures' stuff, but it's expensive as fuck unless you chip into a kickstarter (they have their whole line in all the pledge managers) and they don't really pay attention to materials strength when sculpting weapons

>not under any circumstances
Black Tree, Hasslefree (known cheats/fuckups) Tangent Miniatures (uses uncleaned, low-quality 3D printed masters and uses only renders in the online store)

>where2cop
If you're in the US I highly recommend going with Ral Partha Europe for metals over Iron Wind. Better pricing, vastly better shipping *even with the tariffs*.
>Sandra
Does work for EVERYONE. She started at Grenadier, so Mirlition and RPE/Iron Wind both carry some. Forge of Ice, North Star, and Reaper all have her work in metal.
>Kev
Did scraps and drabs all over the place. Used to have Hasslefree until his buddy drove it into the ground, works for Forge World now. Did odd jobs for Bombshell (no more metal though), several companies Crooked Dice bought up, Heartbreaker, Reaper, et. al
>>
>>97169255
Hasslefree is officially dead as of recently. Damn shame about them and Black Tree, theres a good few BT sculpts I want. Some good info and companies I havent seen yet, thanks!!

Lead /tg/ is never this helpful or active, its nice.
>>
>>97169343
Unfortunately for us all, Artemis and Sally reincorporated the company this Summer. He's been threatening to bring it back but seems to be doing about as well with getting that done as he does with anything unrelated to streaming Blood Bowl for 10 hours at a time.
I did find a couple companies with stashes of random HF stuff, though, Fantization in particular is busy clearancing off their stock and still have stuff like the NOLA Five.

I've wanted to get a lot of their various artillery for my dwarfs for like 15 years. I always postponed because I don't like buying stuff while I have so much to paint.

And now most of it has disappeared from their site. I'm kicking myself for not having painted more when I had the chance and bought thos organ guns, dwarf tanks and giant cannon.
