>when the DM says you have to draw a map
>>97169850>DM
>>97169850explain?
just draw it pussy, what are you too afraid to draw a little map?
Without a map people just make shit up. It's better to have some structure.
>>97169853Some DMs ask players to 'map the dungeon', rather than just putting down battle maps for combat rooms.
>>97169859No, structure is video games. So just play a video game.
>>97169850Change for a GM, I guarantee 90% of your problems are going to disappear in the process>>97169859Or you know, you could play pretend, rather than drawing useless maps that serve to go full NPC mode>>97169886>rather than just putting down battle maps for combat rooms.Which is even more faggot take than drawing maps
This video has the best technique for drawing maps from scratch: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UR7gskNMZDQ
>>97169850>this nigger can't even into basic line drawings on graph paper 10 year old americans could do in the 80s. lmao
>>97171147yeah let's all stop playing the game while someone goes>sorry, was that 30 foot 'wide' as in 'across', so east-to-west? and where did you say the door was again? is this right?it's 2025. skip mapping. no callers (everyone gets to play). printed set piece battle maps with minis if you can do it, dry erase markers and tokens if you can't.
>>97171157Except it's nothing like that. Maybe stop playing with autists, starting with yourself.
>>97171161i'll play with myself all i want, i'm irreligious.
>>97169850On our table, the DM is the only person who is not an artist. It's funny watching him sweat trying to draw simple squares as much as it's funny for him to watch us calculate 3 single-digit bonuses for our damage.
>>97171157>I can't listen or describe or imagine or draw, the game about exploration should be about me. You're the worst.
>>97171204this is none of those things, though. read the examples of play in old-school D&D, or this 'how i map quickly' OSR YouTuber (that people hold up as a good example):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prijsOI3xWsit's not some artistic endeavour, it's>30 foot east, south-north T-junction 20 foot south end 30 foot north door, south 20-feet Y-junction east-west 45 degree turns.that isn't art or fun. it's programming one of these old robots.
>>97171157Love this post. My last GM thought osr was glamorous so he had us mapping and it was so disruptive. He made us pick a shot caller too and any time I'd try to do anything I basically got ignored. I started tuning out and eventually quit the game. Didn't realize it was something other people dealt with.
>>97171243lol you've never played a game at all or read any of the actual material. Cope with being inadequate and wrong.
>>97171260>My GM >for an osr game lol not even DM >did it wrong so its all badThis is where you are. You'll never get better. You're too dumb to ever understand and that you have a bad time trying to play games is good to me.
>>97169850you don't draw a map?how do you not get lost?
>>97171260you also played with 9-20 people like Gygax intended, right? otherwise your DM missed the point of the caller - herding cats in a big table or tournament setting
>>97171275What the fuck is this third worlder babbling about?
>>97169850I once mapped out an entire facing of a planet for a three session Battletech shortie, and illustrated a Drac spheroid dropship moving into orbit, all in crayon.cartography is great fun, if you don't make it a boring joyless task.
>>97169850>GM accidentally gives incorrect information one(1) time and ruins entire premise
>>97169850You are like little baby. It's as if your DM dousn't know how to simulate dungeon exploring.>When the DM says you have to draw a map of the dungeon your are exploring, while walking around their blacked out cellar strewn with debris, lit only by the candle you carry, using a stick of charcoal on a calfskin, while wearing a great helm and plate gauntlets, and also trying not to let go of a battleaxe and a heater shield.
>>97169850WTF, This is 2025, He should be using AI for all that 'holding a pen and making marks on paper' crap and asking me to keep track of stuff in the game! I should just be able to lay perfectly still in my heated gellpod while the DM narrates an wonderful experience to me. I shouldnt need to move a muscle! I havnt moved or done anything for myself since I was born and I'm not going to start now!
>>97171157>skip mapping. no callers (everyone gets to play). You never did either of these nevergames. Mapping is fun and gives the players a connection to the game world. The caller works as a medium between the dm amd the players. The players talk about what they are gonna do while the dm gets to prep shit in peace.
>>97169850I'm not against maps in theory, but in practice most of the GMs I've had are very bad at describing a room in such a way as to make mapping easy.
So how do you do that?>"I'm facing north.">"you see a wall.">"How far is it?">"15 feet.">*scribble scribble>"I'm facing west.">"you see a wall.">...
There should be cards for rooms.Because if you have torches and eyes you see the damn room when you enter it. Therefore you lay out a card with that room. Or cut up graph paper.
>>97171359Im confused. What's a caller? A non-GM NPC shot-caller? Do people need that?
>>97169886This is something that sounds good in theory but is in practice utterly unworkable
>>97171543the player who communicates to the DM some group action like "we head east."they're the one who "calls" it, yeah. someone has to.
>>97171555Oh, thanks. Worried for a sec it was some new opt-in role the kids came up with to help streamline the game and arbitrate the rules.
>>97169886If you’re going to say “map the dungeon” you’d better give them >a starting location>grid paper>a key>a complete measure of every room and passage they encounterIt sounds great but a player map is either going to take hours to complete with near accuracy or be more misleading than helpful. Notes are better. Now if a player WANTS to map a dungeon that is a whole different ballgame.
>>97171157Yet it's okay to stop playing the game to listen to other people make voices at each other or alpha-write a novel they'll never publish.
>itt: no-games arguing with never-games about something that nobody does in this hobby for the past 20 years
The first time I tried to have my players map this guy used a shitty software to draw rather than by hand, and it was incredibly fiddly and disruptive. And I was too indulgent in going over his map and repeating things, plus my dungeon was incredibly complex. I learned to use the lines of the grid paper, not look at the players map for them and not repeat the descriptions thousands of times. The map doesnt need to be perfect, its just so they can find their way out later.
I drew this map for a game I was a player in
>>97172000The player maps have never had to be a 1:1 recreation of the descriptions or the DM map, they're just a gameplay tool for orienting themselves in the dungeon and engaging with it tactically.
>when the DM tells you cartography didn't use to be a thing and implies people in fantasy past were stupid and couldn't navigate by star constalationsYou just want to hide your shitty worldbuilding, Jeff!
>>97172555Even still, I've done quick little sketches of places just to remember where we had been and where we were not. This really isn't a big deal, but it's a mod thread.
>>97169850>"Hey, you don't have to map the dungeon if you don't want to">*makes you roll for not getting lost after you delve 2 levels in*Jokes aside there's no need to map dungeons with graph paper if you don't specifically need that level of detail, making a flowchart map with apt notations is sufficient but i would discourage anything less than that, otherwise there's no fucking point in having a game involving fucking dungeons and labyrinths.
>>97169859Yeah, which is why the GM provides structure by describing things. Moron.
>>97171277What makes you think I would get lost?
>>97171353imagine being this mad that your shitty games have been permanently supplanted by superior ones lol
>>97171359Mapping is boring, description connects the players to the game, and the players don't need a medium. The GM is right there, they can just talk to him. The players aren't all doing the same thing, so it makes no sense to have a single representative.
>>97171555Who's we, nigga? I'm on the east coast investigating a vampire cartel. Another player is fighting a demon outbreak in Memphis. The third player working with a dullahan and an ooze to rescue trafficking victims in South America.
>>97172043Who are you quoting?
>>97169850>DM asks if you're single
>>97169886You're a fucking retard nogames faggot
>>97171581You've never played games. Kill yourself
>>97171474>>97171157>>97171260>>97171553You're all genuinely stupid fucking idiots who can't figure out how to play a game that 10year olds in the 80s could handle
>>97173033You're a retard
Why is the OSRnigger shitting his pants loudly over other people playing better games
>>97172622>the lake is a T-Rex>there's also a yelling slug tooyeah no, your GM let it slide but now way is like that
