I have the task of setting up a game for my wife and daughter, as basically my first foray into DMing. I've been considering putting them into my work-in-progress homebrew setting, but I don't really feel confident I can run it kid friendly. So my next idea was to just steal the WoW classic human quest chain as my campaign setting because I know the setting quite well. The general beats being:

>Fight the kobolds for control of the mines
>Fight the gnolls who raid the southwest
>Find clues about the defias brotherhood supporting the gnolls
>Fight the defias brotherhood in the deadmines
>Uncover the noble who supports the defias from within stormwind
>The missing diplomat chain starts.
>Sent to Duskwood to investigate the defias there
>Optionally fight some undead and Morbent Fel
>Sent to Theramore, find the place where the missing diplomat was imprisoned but he apparently is no longer there. Find information about the orcs in Redridge having some role in it.
>Fight the orcs at Redridge, leading to entering the burning steppes and finding the quest hook to the Jailbreak line.
>Do the jailbreak line, discover the true identity of Katrana Prestor and throw her out of Stormwind
>Fight Onyxia in her home and possibly breadcrumb to Nefarian in Blackwing lair.

Probably the campaign just ends at the death of Onyxia.
Any thoughts?

The thread is about using the story as ttrpg content. Pic related. Its you. A troll fishing with bait. His bait isn't great. Thanks for posting.
>>

It's a solid base to build upon. Obviously file the serial numbers off, switch a few things up and add one or two elements. Also keep in mind that ttrpg campaigns rarely play out the way you planned them out. Ideally don't plan too far into the future and be ready to improvise.
But what you've listed up is a good set of ideas to design your starting situation and to then draw upon as the campaign develops.

Why dont you just play video games since you want to play them so much?
>>
>>97171748
It's a good base, there's a reason it's held up so well over the years.

Only thing is that the PCs might not want to stick to the rails, so you may have to move some things about on the fly. It's all part of GMing, you grow by practicing. If the players have never done this before either, then don't be afraid to give them firmer advice and guidance. X or Y options are common and let the players feel like they have some say over what's happening, even if it's just "Kobolds in the mines, or Gnolls on the roads". Have fun with it, it won't go perfectly to plan but nothing ever does as a GM.

Get ready for people to side with Van Cleef

I was kinda thinking if they go off the rails its ok because I can let them go to redridge, duskwood, stranglethorn and the blasted lands with little or no issue. These places also work to reinforce the main driver for the players that the human lands are under attack from all sides and that they are the ones to solve it. There are also good side stories just ready to get pulled from the wiki they can follow.

Thats a really good point. I'm not sure how to deal with that. Maybe I could sprinkle in stuff about how monstrous and cruel he is. But then still the defias are in essence not wrong in their hatred for the SW nobles. Maybe I could suggest that not paying was unavoidable somehow. Or have Katrana insist that payment was made but they demanded more or something, and make van Cleef sound greedy. Or maybe I might just have the defias outright kill some family members and hope thats enough to keep a healthy animosity towards them.

Make the Defias a constant low level annoyance.
By the time players get to Van Cleef. They have been fighting extortionists, thieves and raiders from just after their first Kobolds and Wolves.

what age are we talking about with the daughter here? And how general fantasy savy is she and her mother? You mentioned you wanted it to be kid friendly. At the end of the day you can say that the defias might have started with good intentions but went way too far. Maybe even throw them a remorseful Defias who wants to get out.

Something along the line of "Van Cleef promised us payment and a noble cause, yet we are little better than bandits, harassing farmers just as poor as we are. This is wrong. I didnt wanted any of this."

From there, you can ajust how simplistic and "child friendly", or mature and muddied you want to go.

>first foray into DMing
>wife and daughter
>based on video games
>can’t make it kid friendly
>in 5e

Don’t DM
Don’t run a game for women and small children.
Don’t base games off of video games.
Don’t run conflict-based fantasy for a child too young to comprehend violence.
Don’t ever use 5e, especially if you’re a new DM and especially if your players are new.

Just Don’t.

I say just reveal their backstory AFTER you kill them. The game does, after all.

no man, you dont even know what you're doing yet. run a premade module like phandelver.

Show how the Defias are a menace to common people too. Even if they started with an understandable motive now they are motivated by greed.

It's just you and your wife and kid right? Don't let anyone else join or it will become troublesome

I've actually tried to DM a 4e game, that started with Katrana dispensing the party to do... Something relating to Westfall, I don't remember. I think she wanted to get rid of the witnesses that could tie her to the Brotherhood.
The game fizzled out immediately, because one of the players demanded immense resources from her, the right to command Westfall's garrison and half the reward in advance. When she said no, he said
>Okay, then my character doesn't accept the mission. I stand up and leave.

>be me last night in game with friends
>guard won’t let us into town unless we agree to help some people in town.
>my friend was insisting that we argue for more compensation for doing the guards chores.
>I push everyone along and say “of course sir, if you’ll just let us come into the keep. We’ll start on those chores.”
>in character I say to everyone else “we’re not doing those chores, let’s go tell his supervisor that he was slacking off and not doing his rounds”

I like rping, but when everyone goes on side quest in town. It just makes the game slog on.

ESL rules the internet and will forver rule the internet, you big dummy. Get used to it. Or dont. You will forver be a minority.

Seeing how your wife and kid are the player characters, maybe check out the WoW comic book from Wildstorm. You could let them straight-up meet Lo'gash and maybe replace Broll and Valeera. Gladiator pits are a fun plot hook.

>Seeing how your wife and kid are the protagonists and don't have to share that role with millions of other PCs,
Sorry. I'm retarded and trans

The daughter is 7 and has no background in fantasy at all. My wife is generally more interested in splinter cell type stuff. We all do love going to castles and stuff, and I play pretend sword fighters with my daughter sometimes. We are also very much board game people. In general they're at least not much burdened by tropes or expectations.

As for getting them to not side with the defias, I'll probably do an "all of the above" approach. So the payment cant be made because kobolds in the mines. Also I'm not going to outright tell them unless they pry. Also constant low level annoyances. Also they're cruel and heartless. Also a defector states that they're not cool.

>>97172352
I ran two oneshots for my regular dnd group. Who are mostly spectrum people. It went pretty okay, but I'm more nervous about this because I need to provide something bigger and more coherent. Also, the only way to get into DMing is to do it I think. And in this case my subjects don't really know what to expect.

>>97173594
>>97173700
Hopefully my wife and daughter will not be doing that kind of stuff. I feel like its more of a sperg gamer thing anyway.
