>maximum focus on battles and fighting in small teams
>fighting is about reducing each other's invisible HP pools
>when characters get downed they can just get up and go back to fighting
>every character is a collection of magic powers, whole combat and player expression is about taking turns using their list of cool moves

for how shitty DnD is at replicating fantasy adventures, is it secretly a perfect system to run Battle Shonen type stories?

Are there any good Homebrews that do that? Have you ever tried it?
>>
>is it secretly a perfect system to
No
>>
>>97172082
DnD is only good for running shonenslop.
>characters survive numerous fatal hits
>"epic" shit happens every turn for every class
>game falls apart completely if you add any sort of mass combat
>game falls apart from natural progression just by how fucked powerscaling gets for the PCs
>>
>>97172304
It isn't. Shonen at least has strong enemies to beat. Also, there are a lot of specific shonen tropes that DnD doesn't accomodate.
>>
>>97172082
How do you run say, JJK or Naruto in DnD? You can't really.
>>
>>97172359
>>97172265
What is a good system to run shonen then?
>>
>>97172393
Naruto is a more complex system than DnD allows for.
>>
Well, both anime and DnD run on idiotic play dough physics for the sake of rules of cool…….

Lightning bolts? Doesn’t move as fast as real lightning and doesn’t hold nearly the same amount of power… bullets are also slow enough to dodge, block or deflect…

Anime style fight choreographies are too conveniently retarded to exist irl. Wizard battles are no different. Magic/physics is not fucking around, realistically speaking. Why wouldn’t it? Everything else is brutal so why not magic?

Health bars don’t exist in real life. Having yourself get knocked out could fucking kill you.

FUCK anime cringe.

Shonen is better than anything western entertainment puts out, and I like it, especially the choreography.

Nigger you want to hammer in a WHOLE fucking game, the ready content of which has little to share with the variety of the whole ass genre you want to employ it for, just because of a couple of mechanics thay seems to lean into that?
Be my guest, have fun producing (and playtesting) powers and archetypes, some groups enjoy that i guess.

...or you could simply use picrel (if you want to roll d20s so badly) and be done with. Translating capeshit to shounenslop takes literally 0 effort.

Joel Happyhil's DAWN.
>>
the phenomenon of 'creeping cantrips' have made it feel very shounen-y. blasting unlimited energy balls at enemies is just what wizards/sorcerers/etc. DO in fights, everyone knows that!

it didn't used to be this way ;__;
>>
>>97172082
No, and the fact that you would ask this means you don't understand how shonen battles work.
>>
>>97172082
Hero system is better considering it was designed from the ground up to handle comic book bullshit.
>>97172684
>Literally hero system but more restrictive and with a d20
I feel vindicated.
>>
>>97172684
>>97173019
I'll give these a look, but I don't have high expectations given that superhero comics and battle shounen manga feel quite different once you get past the superhuman powers.
>>
>>97173121
The only real differences is genre conventions and cultural influences which are easy to handle.

Nigga it outright has an anime splat

OVA is good for this
>>
>>97173121
I don't have direct experience with Hero (even though i know it enough to see that it would work greatly for this kind of games) so i will avoid making arguments for it to avoid potential misunderstandings but, regarding MnM, i think the game mechanics are perfectly suited for battle shōnen types of games, here's a couple of examples:

>hero points and complications
The characters gets hero points through complications, which works for building up an escalation type pacing of the narrative produced. Hero points are a metacurrency that, aside for usual stuff (rerolls, minor narrative alterations), can be burnt for epiphany style awakening of powes (like temporary unlocking new power uses).

>extra effort
Literally the mechanic for "going further beyond" and "i'm not done yet". Can be use to unlock new / potentiated shit like for hero points
>>
>>97172082
Not even remotely close.
>>
>>97173160
OVA is made for this. Even right down to being able to make up a new ability when the drama it as its highest, while having the character burning away his last remaining flicker of life to pull off a huge attack.
>>
>>97172082
Well no because...
Huh.
No you might have a point on that one anon.

Picrel, the story time of an anon that run a JoJo game in Mutants and Masterminds.
>>
Using a class based system for a shounen-like game is a fool's errand.
>>
>>97172415
Seven Sea can easily be hacked to be anime-like.

You can literally play One Piece.
Genesys should work too.
If you want something older maybe Exalted.

Fabula Ultima sort of, it is inspired by jrpg but can have anime vibes.
>>
>>97172082
Shonen is fantasy.
>>
>>97173427
Kinda brings me back to the early 00s when people would try to stat Batman in 3.5 and he's have to have 20s or higher in every stat and be cross-classed and presitge classed to the gills. 3.5 was retarded and it should have been pretty clear that few, if any, fictional characters can actually be comfortably fit into the box of "Level 15 Fighter 7/Rogue3/warlock2/Ranger2/Bard1" or whatever other retarded shit people were slapping together to try and make a square peg fit a round hole.

>>
>>97172415
Exalted.
>>
>>97172082
No.
DnD plays too slow in combat to get a really nice shonen battle feel.
DnD has a schizo problem with physics. A "Normal" fighter can't throw a guy into a door and break it, or jump more than 20'. But a wizard can fly and throw fireballs. Its always had this disconnect because its trying to meet two different fantasies at once.

The second problem is patcheable if you really wanted to use DnD. The first is really not.
