Smirky Ogre Edition

>What is Shadow of the Demon Lord?
An awsome game. It's creator designed it with the goal to have fun with his friends at the table while drinking beer. The ruleset he came up with is really easy to learn and well-balanced to meet a broad spectrum of player's/GM's preferences. The lore of the game setting is grimdark af and only really makes sense if you read trough a ton of splatbooks.

>What is Shadow of the Weird Wizard?
A game with a weird name.

>What's new?
Two extraplanetar extension to game world Urth:
Abaddon: The Angel in the Void
Shadow of the Red Moon

Thread discussion starter:
Lots of people complain that the game world's lore is shit. The description in the core-rules book is really concise and insufficient for a GM who want's to be able to understand the history and cosmology of the setting. After having read 90% of the splatbooks, I think the settings lore is coherent and well designed. Which books would you recommend to GMs who pick up the game?

Power word: Shit

>Want a grittier, more efficient 5e? Try Shadow of the Demon Lord! now for the introductory adventure where you go to Bleeding Hymen a town marked by a statue of a giant penis and go into the tomb of Fecalheimer the sewage goblin who built his hall of shittery where fat naked women poop into ogres' mouths and you have to dive into the shit to get the key to unlock the door and fight the tomb guardian an undead naked woman with her dead baby and umbilical cord as a flail but watch out! she can cast a spell that'll make you shit yourself until your dick falls off and you die and don't forget to roll for corruption for seeing her otherwise you grow a third testicle

Demon Lord Companion 1 is pretty standard recommendation. The rest of books is completely optional. Occult philosophy has a lot of epic spells for powerful spellcasters.
There's a series of very small supplements on secondary mechanics like corruption, diseases and injuries, but for most that level of granularity just isn't needed

>Abaddon: The Angel in the Void
Unless I'm misreading it, sounds like we didn't actually get what was talked about years ago. You could probably twist things around somewhat, but I expected we'd have an Arkship that had become infested by demons from the void and that the PCs would regain the incredible abilities they once had as they level as they shook off cryosleep sickness.

Back when I was playing/running I found the priest centered book pretty important, uuuuuh, uncertain faith I think?

It's not even a full game, it's just a module? That sucks. I almost wish it was just vaporware.

>Lots of people complain that the game world's lore is shit.
Because it is. People rightfully rag on Rob for his blatant magic realm scat fetish, but what bothers me equally that goes unmentioned is his awful vocabulary for worldbuilding in general. It takes away any and all mystery and intrigue from his setting(s). Examples include:
>genies who made everything
Which immediately brings to mind Arabian cartoon parodies.
>the weird wizard xD
Rick & Morty-type D&D crossover bullshit.
And for worldbuilding history-
>ogres believe they were quote "shat out of the anus of a giant ogre"
>dwarf city is named bulger because its founder built a statue of himself with a bulging penis

Unironically he should've been more poetic or flowery. Use a different word besides fucking genie. Call the wizard something else besides weird. Phrase the ogre creation myth in a more roundabout way. Everything just feels so surface-level, generic, basic, and vulgar. It's hard to explain it but you'll start picking up on it, and something about it to me absolutely kills everything he writes. There's no air of mystery, it's just either simplistic, blunt, tee hee potty mouth vulgar, or (most often) all three.

If that still doesn't make sense, look at it this way
>In the primordial darkness, a great crawling beast devoured all in its wake, and within the bowels of that voracious monstrosity was birthed the race known as Ogres.
versus
>Ogres believe they were shat out of the anus of the Giant Ogre.
>>
>>97189413
Or
>In the formless darkness of non-existence, the first spirits, older than the reckoning of time, gathered. Through them, existence was born.
versus
>The genies made the universe.

I'll be real with you. I don't want writers to avoid mining rich mythological traditions for ideas because your only exposure to a word is via a Disney movie. This is a (you) problem if there ever was one.
>>
>>97189413
Because he's ameritard. Just look at George R.R. Martin, same shit - British Isles sideways and lots of weird fetishes (incest, rape, etc).
>>
>>97189413
I think he just wants to make the setting tongue in cheek like WH(F). It's just sad that subtlety, for mutts, died with Scary Movie(2000).

>Shadow of the Demon Lord

is it even possible to find a MORE generic name for anything fantasy-related?

well ok, maybe something about dragons

Genies are based on a pre-islamic believe in spirits of nature and demons.
In islam they are creatures who, like humans, are created to serve god.
Schwalb's cosmology builds up on that. What's your fucking problem?

Your revulsion at any mention of feces, which are a natural an integral part of human life, seems pathologically excessive.

How is Weird Wizard compared to Demon Lord, now that's it been out for a bit?

Haven't run it yet but I'm thinking of starting a new campaign and I'm wondering if it might be better suited for my purposes since it's less dark, I've run Demon Lord quite a bit in the past.

The gist of it is this:
Do you enjoy a player throwing 20d6 damage dice each turn on average? If yes then you will find that WW is an upgrade to StDL.
>>
How are the published adventures for SotWW?
I'm thinking about running a campaign and I'd like something lower effort to prep, since this wouldn't be my main playgroup.
The published adventures good enough, or would I be better served taking an existing dungeon/campaign from another system and using the stats from SotWW?
