>author adapts his D&D campaign into a well-written, highly-entertaining animated series

Why has nobody done this since?
>>
Malazan is adapted from a D&D homebrew and it's awful.
>>
>>97194125
Lots and lots of people adapted their games
They were just really bad at making movies/books/comics out of them.
>>

Gygax could have prevented Japanese deviation from American tabletop RPGs, but nahhh, he's tooo short sighted. Now we are suffering from Video game isekai bullshit.

this
I'd say the thing most people get wrong is being unwilling to change shit, insisting that everything is as long-winded, minute, and in-jokey as the original game was
>>
>>97194125
mostly because the group usually have trash groups with 1 or 2 good players while everyone else is either those people or degenerates.

Hearsay says firefly is an adaptation of a Traveller game.
>>
Wasn't Disco Elysium some sort of TTRPG?
Also maybe Chronicles of Riddick
>>
>>97194125
He adapted it into a series of short stories, which later got adapted into a novel series, which then finally was adapted into an anime.

>well-written, highly-entertaining animated series
I know Record of Lodoss War is memed as something cool because it's related to D&D but anyone who's actually watched it knows its fucking mid and drops off a fucking cliff in its latter half.
>>
Goblin Slayer is honestly the best TTRPG adaption purely because it's just a basic party going on basic quests every book like it's a group of friends chaining modules.
It best captures the spirit of replays without actually being one.

Malazan's not an animated series, it's based on a GURPS campaign, and it's pretty great though not without some significant flaws.

That's not really fair.

Sure, the writing is weak, and it's a complete let down compared to what the opening seems to promise, but that's partly because of just how amazing the opening is (in no small part thanks to Maaya Sakamoto). As weak as the story and the majority of the characters are, the female character designs remain top-tier and have aged incredibly well, and though the animation is inconsistent in quality, every so often you can see some real genius shine through.

Overall though, the unfortunate reality is that there's actually not as many medieval fantasy anime as one might imagine there should be, and Lodoss OVA rises up by not being a total embarrassment, like something along the lines of Lodoss TV.

Not quite the greatest medieval fantasy anime of all time, and you can argue it's overrated, but I wouldn't call it "mid". It's no Berserk or Those Who Hunt Elves, but it's also not [Mediocre Anime Based on a Mobile Game that Died Seven Years Ago] or [Bland Medieval Isekai that Inexplicably Also Involves Giant Robots and Isn't Escaflowne]. And it's far from the genuine shit piles you can step in, with some Isekai series in particular making Lodoss look like it belongs in the Louvre.

Malazan characters have no personality beyond being badasses or extremely evil. It's as deep as a puddle.
>>
>>97194481
Nip fantasy was way more influenced by Wizardry vidya than D&D tabletop in the end.
>>
>>97194125
This show isn't good, it just has nice art, deedlit and pirotess
>>
>>97194687
>>97194772
It's shit slideshow action scenes with terrible plot and characters. Deedlit's iconic design is It's only redeeming quality
>>
>>97194125
Critical Role is technically this, and /tg/ seems to hate it.
>>
>>97194125
why was parn so gay for that lord guy? every scene he's trying to ditch deedlet to chase the black knight guy around
>>

>Critical Role is technically this
Critical Role is a staged.

Legends of Vox Machina
Mighty Nein

It's confirmed that the Expanse was also based on a campaign, although it was a heavily homebrewed d20 modern, of all things.
>>
>>97194772
you talking shit on dunbine? thems fightin words
>>
>>97194929
methinks the lug was thinking Knights and Magic.
>>
>>97194772
Basically all it has going for it are Deedlit and Pirotess's character designs and a few cute cuts of Deedlit. That's incredibly thin gruel even by modern isekai standards, since plenty of them have hot elves.

Work on your art.
