I didn't buy into Varia because I just got out of fab and I dont need another one of those, but it's surprisingly decent. and makes fab look like a bit of a turd by comparison. much better than a small indy game you've never heard of should be. its the same basic premise but with two really good changes:

>turn being broken up into 'moments' and adding a crit die
bascically the turn has time slots you play attacks and defends into and who is on offense can switch midturn. same kind of hand math like fab but adds a sequencing strategy on top. makes for more hype 'big play' moments and less mathing every point. and then the die adds a little uncertainty, its still like 90% predictable but the little +/- 10% means you cant perfect math everything.

you can mix the different classes together in any way you want. you instead when building a deck get X levels to split among classes, and if you want to run a Level 6 Ninja card you need to take at least 6 levels in Ninja. means exponentially more class combos and deck archetypes.

You know how gempacks work right? They're prize support linked to a specific release, often times featuring special foil treatments of cards in the set. This gempack wouldn't exist without compendium.

I think its pretty fair to say gundams design was cooked from the start. Like anyone that plays ACGs can see why its arguably their worst designed game, far below digimon which already had issues that were highlighted by burst digivolve and now the linkmon. Of course blocker is warping the game. How could it not. They stripped out so many aspects of the average game designed to avoid this

I would be interested to watch a documentary of tcg designers talking about bandai design. To me, Im just an anon thats played them for 20+ years and has an interest in design. Im no expert. But bandai has made okay, maybe even decent systems at low complexity. I like union arena, i like digimon, one piece is fine, fusion world. But I do not get what the fk they were thinking with gundam. It is such a step back in the lessons theyve learned from other games.

And to say that yeah theyre a problematic company but it doesnt cost them any more money to make good designs
