Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to first-decade, Gygaxian D&D, its faithful modern clones, and content created for use with them. Later editions (2e and newer) should be discussed elsewhere. And as we enter this happiest and newest of years, remember: 2e was never an old-school game, bait is for reporting, and fish is for smoking! Happy new year, grogs!

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons played as intended by its creators from 1974 to 1983 — less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching metaplots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. We also have two excellent beginner guides created by Anons with feedback from the thread that you can check for help:

The overall answer is that we established a weekly game and have stuck to it with only a few missed sessions. In doing so, I have become a better DM and my players have become better players.
If I were to pick a single moment in the campaign so far, then I'm fond of the fact that I ran a joust using Chainmail. Or the time the Cleric used turn undead on a bunch of skeletons laying inside the skeletal remains of a giant snake, causing them to run off like a Chinese New Years dragon and trigger a pit trap to the next level of the dungeon.

Getting a Carcosa game going. Its a hard sell for most gamers on account of the monster rape but its happening. Two players with a scarlet heroes homebrew. Get to do very over the top pulp scifantasy and make up cool shit like Carcosan Man O'War.
>As regular MM Man O'War + random colour and random psionic power

Actually getting to play in it! I ran Borshak's Lair in the Wilderlands of High Fantasy with OSE, beginning my first OSR game ever.

Playing Swords & Wizardry for the first time solo. Too much fun.
