What are some fantasy and sci-fi movies you should watch to inspire your games and players?
ConanThe Voyage of Sinbad filmsThe Last Valley
>>97277617Here, I'll match you and post 10 times the recommendations you did:

Conan Willow Princess BrideLord of the Rings Dark Crystal The Labyrinth ZuluBrazilKhartoumIce PiratesWaterlooBen HurReturn to OzBaron Munchausen Neverending story City of Lost Children
>>97277617what movies have you felt inspired by before, anonor is just this another vaguepost that will get 20 ish replies before dying off
>>97277753Baron MunchausenThis one actually feels like a game.> Bullshit PC plans> Ridiculous backstories> Filmsy excuses for the other players to join the game> Party' face acting like it's a game all the time> Cucking Gods, fighting giant monsters and entire armies by themselvesFeels like a group of friends having a great time pulling the silliest of shit in an otherwise serious adventure.
>>97277636>>97277753These are solid. Gonna add some series as well that I use for inspo.Maxmilian and Marie de Bourgogne (german TV show)The Last Kingdom (skip the movie) TV showAndor- if you like star wars, it basically runs like a game out of Age of RebellionThe FIRST season of Mandalorian- basically runs as an Edge of the Empire campaignThe Last Charge of the Light BrigadeReign of FireBig Trouble in Litlte ChinaThe ThingEscape from New YorkYadoThe Maltese FalconShogun (the newer series)Kurosawa films- particularly Ran and Seven SamuraiThe Expanse series is how I'd imagine a good Traveller campaign runThe Warriors (1979)13th WarriorLast of the Mohicans
>>97278561What's wrong with the older Shogun mini series
>>97278572I thought there was an old movie that wasn't well received. I'm ignorant of the old series. I just really enjoyed the new series. Was the old one good?
>>97277617Attack the Gas Station. Older korean movie about violent shitheads but with a goofball asian comedy side. Seems about right for most party dynamics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFgtINKmWiA
Fire and Ice
Brotherhood of the Wolf
>>97278561This post is straight up dogshit except a few Kurosawa films, mainly Hidden Fortress and Seven Samurai are great for RPG inspo. >>97279371That's a good one
Unironically what games? What you might be watching for Monsterhearts is not what you'd watch for On Mighty Thews.
Anything that had Ray Harryhausen special effects are a must. Always full of cool adventures and are a classic for a reason.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
>>97278806It's good for its time
>>97280472 85 OAV is waaaaay better as inspo. The Count's menagerie is already worth of a Monster Manual by itself.
>>97279483Good point, I'running a spelljammer campaign, so when someone wants to join I just ask them:- Have you watched that old Treasure Planet movie?- Did you like it?- What kind of character would you like to play that would fit in that movie?I think this have helped a lot to set the tone of the campaign.
>>97279981>tranime
>>97277617Really depends on the flavor of fantasy and sci-fi you are after in particular. Conan matches your pic better than you can imagine. I like a lot of what other anons have suggested. Would throw in Wizards as well.>>97279981My man. Good anime recommendations.
>>97278806It is good and I like it better. The newer one is still very weeaboo but the older one comes from a more innocent time where no one cared, at least not publicly. It's totally unabashed about being some western fantasy of what Japan was like whereas the remake tones that stuff down. I don't think the new adaption captures the spirit of the novel well, it tries too hard to be less weeaboo which removes a lot of the charm, especially that of the thoroughly implausible love story that tracks through the novel and 80s show. The 80s also didn't try to force me to learn Japanese to understand what they were saying in Japanese, unlike the newer one when they left bits unsubtitled so that the viewer could be just as confused as the European characters at times. While I can see some good for leaving off subtitles in some productions, I don't think that helped the story telling in this story.Compare the 1960 sand and sandals epic Spartacus with its wonderful saturated colours, over the top spectacle, square jawed never sets a foot wrong hero to a grimmer film like 2000's Gladiator with its slightly less square jawed and slightly flawed hero who lets his desire for revenge overcloud his judgement, throws in a little brooding, some moral quandaries, some emotional angst over the death of his family. Both very good films and both enjoyable. Same for both Shogun miniseries. While they wasted him and this was not up there with his best work, this was the first thing I saw Toshiro Mifune in before I knew who Toshiro Mifune was.Didn't hurt that it had Yoko Shimada as Mariko either.

>>97279941Do Dark Dungeons or Mazes and Monsters count as D&D films?
What are the quintessential action movies to inspire an RPG campaign of GURPS Action?Yes I'm aware the book has a list of recommended books, I want to see what /tg/ has to say about it
Army of Darkness
>>97283614nah, they're films about d&d, not d&d films. If that makes any sense.
>>97283761>spoilerThe Heavy Metal film
>>97277617It's got to be "The Scorpion King."
>>97285282Which one?
>>97285294In my opinion, the various sequels lack the polish, charm and tight pacing of the original, so I would not recommend them.
>>97280944Amuse us, oh epic good opinion haver... What do you watch?
I'd recommend the first Deathstalker. AND DEATHSTALKER TOO!
>>97279981Ninja ScrollVampire Hunter D: BloodlustHighlander: The Search for VengeanceSword of the Stranger
>>97279981Bubblegum Crisis actually had it's own role playing game. I never had the chance to play it but one guy at my local comic shop was a fan of it

>>97287487I don't think your group is going to get much inspiration from a drama about a petty bureaucrat struggling to get a park approved before he dies from cancer.

>>97287910That was a fun one.
>>97287940Funny thing is that Vin is one of the few people that can say "i made a movie about my old d&d pc" (picrel)
Fire and IceI expected total slop but it's actually kino. Excellent stone age adventure.
>>97285282Go to bed Dwaynetty.
>>97287910If we're bringing up mango, Oozanari dungeon.I actually use the third plotline during a game.

>>97277617Space Sweepers is one of those movies that feel like it could have been adapted from a PnP campaign.
>>97285861Barbarians. Two goof ball brothers and a zany quest. It'll remind someone of their players.
>>97277617Alatriste is a Spanish movie about a mercenary (i.e. Spanish Sharpe). Basically a depiction of an intrigue-focused campaign...Where all the PCs only have combat skills.
>>97277617Jack the Giant Killer (1962)Alexander Ptushko's Ilya Muromets, The Stone Flower, and Sadko in the original Russian cuts.Invention for DestructionKarel Zeman's Baron Munchausen, Invention for Destruction, and A Jester's TaleTerry Gilliam's Baron Munchausen is also really good.
>>97287910Hell yeah, this and the Wizardry OVA are my go-tos for quick fantasy vibes
>>97277617Brotherhood of the Wolf. It is a bit more contemporary (set right before the French Revolution) but has all of the stuff you want in a fantasy setting.
>>97306055I would also recommend Gude Crest. It's basically a fantasy Dirty Pair one off. It's neat.
>>97309091Way ahead of you, I've had it downloaded for a month and have been looking for a good opportunity to stream it to friends
>>97279981>Konya wa Hurricane is now playing in your headI wouldn't particularly call Jin-Roh sci-fi, tho. Cyberpunk, but that would be pushing it.It is fantastic, tho.
>>97288373I had thought Riddick was expressly an old drow pc, straight from the man's mouth?
Not to completely hijack the thread, but can I get some kung-fu movie recommendations?I'm going to be in a game where all the pcs are from various monk temples, explicitly supernatural and no, and would like some ideas (even books) featuring such things.>my pc is going to be a 'scorpion style berserker' so anything that gives me sense on that would be greatly appreciated

>>97309541Kung Fu Hustle Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
>>97309499>>Konya wa Hurricane is now playing in your headI prefer Akuma to Tenshi no Kiss https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwQOn7er0-Q
>>97309857Kung Fu Hustle is unironically kino and an excellent king fu movie. The balance between serious themes and slapstick comedy is legendary
>>97309984Though Kung Fu Hustle is his best work, Stephen Chow's other movies are also great. God of Cookery I especially liked, but Shaolin Soccer is another standout.
>>97309949I still like Hurricane better, as it perfectly captured the 80s rock sound.Kiss is a lot more pop sound, in a way I don't think fits the dark cyberpunk setting. Too hopeful, power of friends type.I respect it, tho, because it cleaves to the heart of the series, that being a group of women trying their damndest to make a better world.Regardless, it is bittersweet, because we will never have this kind of sound, this, dare I say, soul, again. I stand with you, anon, in love for days long past, never to return.
This thread reveals the painful truth that anon CAN have decent if not good tastes, but not for shit that came out less than 20 years ago
>>97310826anons are painting barns on broadsides.

>>97310826Good films have come out in the last twenty years, but I'm not sure a lot of them are applicable to /tg/
>>97312577My man is COOKING.I knew one of you would machine gun drop a bunch of kungfu movies.
>>97314841I think it's fair to say not many good adventure movies have come out.
>>97315812Superhero movies have long overstayed their welcome.
>>97316696trueSuperhero comics and movies are just soap operas about people with superpowers so they're completely useless for inspiring tabletop games.
>>97316743I wouldn't mind the movies so much if it generated more interest in the comics but people still refuse to read them and worse they push their versions so it goes the other way
How did we get this far into the thread without anyone mentioning Hawk the Slayer?!?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK1v2cyM9_U&pp=ygUPaGF3ayB0aGUgc2xheWVy
>>97315812True, altough I reject the notion that RPGs have to be about adventures.
>>97317487To be fair, a lot of current comics suck ass.
>>97317808The comic continuation by Garth Ennis is also not that bad
How about Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit?

>>97277617For cyberpunk, I recommendStrange Days, by Kathryn BigelowThis movie feels so much like a Cyberpunk 2022 scenario, I'm half suspecting it's just a movie adaptation of an actual campaign.James Cameron is one of the co-writer on this, so it wouldn't surprise me the slightest.Scratch that, actually you couldn't convince me that this didn't start as a CP2022 scenario, the coincidences are just too perfect:- The character are mapping perfectly with the character class in CP2022 (Lenny is a fixer, Mace is a Solo etc...)- Plot is centred around braindance
>>97277617Fire and Ice is a classic.
>>97326675No one mentioned Atlantis yet? I can't believe it.Yeah it is an inferior adaptation of Nadia Secret of Blue Water, but it adds some steampunk into the mix, which is nice, so it's still worth the watch. >>97337050That's the thing here:There is nothing to mine there AND it's a bad movie on top of that.I put all the trash-tier 80s sword & sorcery on the original list, because they are still mineable despite being trash. 47 Ronin is a movie you play someone you hate to torment them
>>97337294>47 Ronin is a movie you play someone you hate to torment themI might rewatch it, I don't remember it being that bad, certainly wasn't good by any stretch but it thought some of the locations they went to in the film were interesting, some interesting monster design.

Have you considered not making being a whinny bitch your core personality trait? From the top of my head, movies that are already on the 1d4 list, but aren't dated:For 2022: Marlowe, Polite Society, PreySisu and Project Adam got edit-warred over, so was the recent D&D movieFor 2024: Salem's Lot latest remake, which is listed on both, that's also when 2nd Dune came out

>>97337042What actually happened was the Pole that curated the lists ever since got perma-banned after they moved from 1d4 to 1d6 and thus regular contribution stopped, too. The list is barren because the rest of the users put maybe a tenth of the movies the crazy Slav did. This is why the old list has thousands of movies, while the new one has barely 500 titles. And why do you think there are so many Polish and Czech movies there?Nothing like idiotic culture wars that claim a fucking aproved movie list for /tg/ purposes, since the faggots that hijacked 1d4 are bunch of leftards and instantly started to remove "problematic" titles. Then they were stupid enough to show up on /tg/ and use name-faggotry to insist their new version of 1d4 is 20% better and 35% more faggot-friendly.
>>97338391What "problematic" films did they remove from the list?

>>97336744NTA, but Khartoum could work imo. Haven't seen Ben Hur
>>97339100Bunch of sword and sorcery movies with gratitous sex scenes, because sex is icky.Bunch of 50s and handful of later movies that "glorify" colonialism, in tune of "55 Days at Peking"; this is also why "Zulu" is not on the list, since they were paranoid about "muh /pol/" memeryFilm serials got cut, because they have icky racism (lmao, because they don't) and are build on "outdated sensibilities". I admire whoever added them back with a long list of as to why they still work for /tg/, leaving them with no ammo to cut them once moreDobermann was edit-warred over and that's why it has a disclaimed for its violence>>97340487Also different anon, but Khartoum only works if you plan to play it as a background for minis. As actual campaign or even one-shot material, there really is nothing useful in it, because it's way past a skirmish involving a player party of 3-6 people.Decent movie, thou.
>>97277617Flesh + Blood
>>97340487Compare Khartoum with, say, Legionnaire, because thematically, they are basically the same core premise: a besieged desert location, with a native uprising and colonial force trying not to die while maintaining strategically important position.>KhartoumFocus on "big historical names", entire plot is about HQ of both sides trying to outsmart the other, big siege-turned-storm sequence that has no chance of victory for defenders, grunts are just background extras>LegionnaireFocus on four grunts that try to make it through the Legion, entire plot is about them trying not to die in series of battles and asaults, big siege sequence that is even-sided (the fort still falls), officers and big events are just background to the experience of those guysNow I'm not an omnisciencent being, but last time I've checked, typically PCs were participants of events, not their instignators and that's how majority of games operate. This makes Khartoum impossible to use, because both the stakes and level of plot is too high, and trying to re-frame it to grunt level means you spend your session digging ditches, standing guard and being killed in enemy assault.Hardly an engaging material, and that after you shifted the focus in the first place (thus defeating the point of the plot)We can go even a step further and compare Khartoum with Sahara>KhartoumCheck above>SaharaA platoon of Allied soldiers against German battalion, defending a (dry) well in the middle of the desert. This is a suicide mission, but the soldiers all agree this is more important to stall the Germans and trick them to die over a dry well than escape, because either way, they are toast, while they at least can do something about the way they die. Combat is even, because the Germs had to storm a defensible position with infantry, while the Allied side has a (broken) M3 tankWFRP turned this into an official module, btw, involving a broken Ol' Reliable and a besieged castle.
>>97278561I actually DM'd a fantasy game based on Escape from New York many years ago, actually only very minor things had to be changed, the story IS like an RP adventure in itself.
>>97278572>>97278806Nothing, it's great and one of the most ground-breaking shows ever made. I mean this was the first show that "dared" to show tortures. Or being a high-prodiction value mini-series. Or to use a whole lot of non-YanksNew one is good, but actually nothing new and special - it is competently made, but no new grounds broken and it's a WORSE adaptation of the book (since this is a novel adaptation). That Disney wants to make season 2 out of finished story is a sad joke

This is literally why people recommend it.
>>97341327Thanks! I was losing hope that someone would answer and was starting to doomscroll through "best 80s action movies" lists lolOf these I only watched Predator, Predators and Aliens.
>>97341362>it's like a bad tabletop RPGOP is asking for movies to "inspire your games and players" not "any movie that might kinda look like, if you squint, a shit RPG campaign done by a bad gm improvising"
>>97341367The problem with action movies past... dunno, 2010 or so, you are better off with games like FATE, Outgunned, Wushu etc. They are just as bullshit as the 80s movies in terms of constriction, plot armour etc, but you simply can use different set of tools that are going better fit. Meanwhile, Predator is a perfect movie about small unit tactics, despite being testosterone-loaded macho bullshit. Whereas, say, Expendables, is just macho bullshit.Speaking of Sly and Statham:CobraRambo (the 2008 one)Bullet to the HeadMechanic (the Statham one)Transporter 1 & 2The One

>>97341405Which is part of why it's on the approved list>>97341419>Things that only exist in my head are real, because they are in my headNigga, you've got serious issues. Here, a list of reasons why this is approved and why it's only for first season:- perfectly gameable plot structure and how to chain it into a bigger string- how to wing up a camapign from literally nothing- just enough details to spin a scenario, without drowning things in exposition- just the right balance between combat set pieces and non-combat stuff- characters are placeholders, which is very handy for GMsWhat you are meanwhile are areguing against is the objective quality of the show, which is completely beyond the scope of the approved lists. Did you notice how many shit-tier B-movies from the 80s are on the approved? They are all objectively and definitely crap, and yet they are approved, for OTHER reasons than their film-making.
>>97341391Thanks!I'll take a look a those. Of these I only watched the transporters.

>>97349202No and yes.But it's a bit more complicated:When 1d6 launched, there was an attempt to make it pozzed as fuck. There was a very strong push-back and that stopped the process. >>97350230>restore itBecause those were some obscure memes and nobody has a copy. They simply didn't migrate it from 1d4 when they had a copyA bunch of other shit that got cut got restored, because people simply had copies on their own.
>>97350230>>97350589Consider this:They cut the entire original approved movies list, just because. Took monumental edit war and eventually a DDoS to make them reconsider. So considerting the level of damage anticipated and how it ended, I say it's workable.2d4 meanwhile started out as 1:1 repository, but then the dumb fuck who set it up went with a machete across the pages, slashing whatever he felt like it, and openly saying that fuck keeping old shit, time to update.Which is why 2d4 is now run by Korean spam bots, I guess
