Kobold Press used to do a little magazine called Kobold Quarterly. One of their issues had, I kid you not, an article titled "On the Care and Keeping of Gelatinous Cubes". It was filled with all sorts of optional rules for keeping, feeding, and caring for a pet Gelatinous Cube, of varying sizes. It requires no levels, only some gold to set up your pen and feed/care for your Cube.

Hobbyists, who call themselves "Cubists", often have little mini mazes for their Cubes to roam around in, along with things like various dyes to use, and little baubles you can put inside your cube for decoration like glass balls enchanted with Continual Flame, and they even had a skill check you could make for getting the objects to come to rest exactly where you want them inside the Cube so you could do things like arrange a star map.

The height of the Cubist world, of course, shapes. They had special compressing devices you could have installed in your little mazes, and once you lure your Cube there with some protein slurry you can do things like make them very long rectangular "cubes", along with rules for how often you had to do this for them to not lose the shape. The most prized of all, however, was the spherical Gelatinous "Cube".

Gib scans.

That's so cute
>>

This is amazing. I love that
>>
Nigger what maze you don't need more than a shovel
The only problem is transporting it, my grandpa found one on a leveled up dungeon, and just walk it out slowly towards his farm
He dug a pit and just made it fall, and it's been there for 2 generations we use it as trash disposal
That's what they are, dripping garbage cans
This obsession with making gelatinous cubes some short of fashion thing is so fucking gay

>This obsession with making gelatinous cubes some short of fashion thing is so fucking gay
You don’t like jello?
>>
>>97289467
That's tasken straight from Forgotten Realms. Waterdeep uses them to keep the sewers clean. I like. Living in a world of magical monsters? People would absolutely figure out how to use them to their advantage.
>>
>>97289467
I always assumed that the only reason they were cube shaped is because they filled a section of corridor, and that's why they can be hard to spot. A free standing cube of transparent jelly wouldn't be hard to miss, but a transparent wall in a dark corridor might be
>>

Same
The baby ones can also fit like a floor tile cube trapping feets and little rodents
>>
>>97291182
the only problem with that logic is; why would the sides not supported by walls retain the flat surfaces instead of just spilling out? must be some point where they do need to set like actual gelatin.

Magic goo.
Magic goo can do whatever it likes.
Like Flubber.

Coolest spider ever imo

>it's gooey all over, anon.
>its a cube of goo.
Clearly not, clearly there's some stiffness to it like jelly
Otherwise things inside would just fall to the ground instead of floating inside, that only happen if the density of the goo is high enough to support weight
Why would you think it's gooey like a high flowing liquid?
>>
>>97291815
goo isn't a scientific term, dude.
>>
>>97291830
Which is kinda funny given how he managed to get the role of density almost perfectly backwards while he was at it.
>>
>>97291830
Says who?
>>
>>97291896
I'm on 4chan and we are discussing fantasy creatures and their made up consistency, I'll use any words I want, disregarding their real life appliance. "Weight" means nothing when talking about a body in liquid, a whale "weights" nothing underwater
Not, a skeleton inside a gelatinous cube?
That has weight. And it's very clear it does because he's floating inside and not falling to the ground.
Exactly like I said.
You cannot explain how the skeleton remains inside the cube while the cube moves, if not by assuming the inside of the goo being somewhat high density
Which raises a question, how would a low density gelatinous cube look like? Probably like a thin acid mist.
>>
>>97292091
>"Weight" means nothing when talking about a body in liquid, a whale "weights" nothing underwater
Yeah. Obviously. Which, for example, is why submarines don't add weight to submerge, decrease their weight to rise, and never have to bother with shifting weight around internally in order to stay in trim.
>>
>>97291265
Maybe it grips like slug feet, and the exposed sides are under tension
>>
Do cubes even have feelings?
>>
>>97289467
That’s fucking adorable

Did a quick search, it's Kobold Quarterly issue 10 (Summer). The PDF seems easy enough to find floating around

You'd at least want to keep your septic cube healthy, and preferably not to give off noxious odors.

Exactly!

Neither do most 4chan posters...

I'm just winging this because my memory isn't certain but my understanding is that gelatinous cubes are invasive species that come from another alien place and specifically, a magical place so that any questions regarding the actual physics of their existence can be waved off as the will of whatever stupid retarded god that governs the magic of the cube's original home.

In a lot of ways cubes are like skeletons or zombies, they defy the physics of muscles and bloodflow needed in normal bodies for locomotion and they are animated specifically because the god of the undead allows it. And that's why there are tiers of undead such that skeletons are far more deadly than zombies because that is the "order" imposed by that god where higher levels of undead summoning represent increasing worship. The "nature" god permits the cubes to exist as they are same way that another or maybe even the same nature god decrees spiders have eight legs.

You could say the skeleton floats because the cube holds it there to maximize digestion surface area. If the body dragged on the floor then you'll have inefficient absorption. You could say that any cube that contains a skeleton is in the progress of digestion and normally, once the cube cannot derive nutrition from the body it discards it on the floor. Cubes are mildly self-aware like a dog so any magical item that remains in the cube could stay within the body because the cube enjoys the feeling of the magical aura, like how a cat wants to stay near warm places.

The definition of fantasy is basically that a divine being enforces any and everything. Justice exists because a god demands it. Gelatinous Cubes exist because a god demands it. And gods are rather shitty, like the undead god.

>Bees shouldn't be able to fly
>They fly because the god of Bees demands it
Maybe are understanding of physics hasn't caught up with gelatinous cubes yet.

This gay fag shit is what ruined DnD. Go on adventures, seek treasure and battle... What is this effeminate keeping cute pets shit

PCs adopting the baby griffon, the baby slime, trying to raise the owlbear cub...

It's a trope as old as D&D, anon. Everyone who plays has seen their party do this since at least the early 80s.

the game has had more to it than "go on adventures, seek treasure and battle" since its inception, also. but retards on this board love to pretend nobody before 2016 ever ran an adventure with a dramatic, overarching storyline focusing on social play

Stealth. Light will pass through a clear flat surface more directly than an uneven one, making it harder to see.
