If your setting doesn't have them you're doing something fundamentally wrong.

Why are they needed?

My setting is in WOD.
Lizardmen are extinct.

They are an old-school staple and a litmus test for good taste.
>>
>>97297098
So, completely unnecessary. Glad to know.

Whilst I don't think that Lizardfolk are strictly necessary depending on setting and tone I like them a lot compared to their various fantasy contemporaries that have come about. (No small part of that is due to being fascinated with reptiles as a child, and still as an adult realistically)

Lizardfolk have an excellent role in that they're one of the best choices for a "neutral" monster faction to introduce to a setting or region.
They're strong enough to be individually threatening, but also weak enough to be subjugated by stronger monsters or forces.
They make great mooks for more complex story based games where the question is "why are they doing this," but they also are just simple dangerous enemies with good physical stats and utility for simple dungeon or hexcrawl games.
Favoring wetlands also gives them some interesting potential cultural inspirations if you want them more fleshed out. Meso-America, Southeast Asia, and for a more modern setting Mississippi delta or riverboat culture could all work.

Plus they just look cool.

Are they people that look like lizards or lizards that look like people? How would one evolve the traits of the other?
>>
>>97297060
Not so long as the Mokole have the Gift that gives them a Near Human "Reptoid" form.
>>
>>97297293
Like in real life, the hot/cute and human-looking ones survive and reproduce to lessen the murderous desires of humans.
>>
tell us why they are so instrumental to your setting, op. do your players/dm appreciate it? be specific.
>>
>>97297389
Not the OP, but in my setting there's about to be a big showdown between the forces of Tiamat and Bahamut. Dragonborn consider themselves to be descended from Tiamat, but don't necessarily worship her. It's also ironic considering that the first Dragonborn were descended from kobolds that had been essentially Awakened by Bahamut. Once the dragons really start going to war with each other, we'll see some fantastic racism against them depending on whether their ancestry is Chromatic or Metallic in nature.

I prefer my lizardmen smarter than swamp savages, but less sophisticated than men.
>>
I replaced them with Frog Men, is that enough for you?
And they are natural enemies of the Giants
>>
So, what you're saying is, since you personally enjoy eating shit, there's something fundamentally wrong with not eating shit.
>>
>>97299712
Yes, exactly. Try and keep up next time, to the best of your inferior abilities of course
>>
>>97297098
I like them as enemies more than allies or PC.
They are a nice flavor of not Orc.

muh smooth evolutionary sequence.

>Lizardfolk
If your setting doesn't have them shapeshifting and ruling society from the shadows you're doing something fundamentally wrong.

That's serpent-folk not lizardfolk. I get the confusion since lizardfolk are essentially degenerate serpent-folk.
>>
>>97297049
The real question is slit or humanoid?

What is the best type of lizard for lizardfolk; alligator/crocodile, iguana, dinosaur-like, generic fantasy reptile?
