Why do spellcasters and gun users never get along?

Because wizards invented guns.

Genre conventions regarding historical references, most spellcasters operate in the awkward pastiche of High Medieval and early Renaissance of "standard fantasy" while the popular image of "early firearms" only goes back to the flintlocks which began depreciating many mainstays of the Wizard's reference periods like heavy cavalry and articulated plate with the customary approach to "adventurers" who use them being the even later "Wild West(ern)" genre conventions.

So in general, the two are treated as similarly "unusual" for esoteric but utterly tangential to eachother knowledge, with similarly tangential "outsider" status to mainstream society.

But it's not a hard rule, there are very much settings where the gun-users are also spellcasters in keeping with their origins in alchemy that is generally classified as Wizard Shit.

Don't care, the question caught my interest and so I gave my opinion of why the trend exists.

Let's be fucking real here. This thread sucks. It's pointless bullshit and it's reposting Puckee art. Puckee or not, fuck this thread and every single vague nogames bullshit thread like it. The fact that someone made a flimsy attempt at impersonating an infamous faggot and then immediately started lashing out when people went
>look it's that infamous faggot
Says entirely too much about the insecure, infamous faggot and how transparently assblasted he is that every thread he makes is now met with loud, repeated screams for him to fuck off and stop shitting up the board.

He couldn't even attempt to fake his way through pretending this is a legitimate, on-topic, board appropriate, real thread. It's not even remotely defensible, so he instead resorts to crying and insisting everyone else is a schizo/autist/sperg.

BANG.

The party's paladin instantly falls dead. A massive hole has been blown through his enchanted breastplate.

Hundreds of feet away, a lone warrior stands. He wields a weapon of flint, steel, and fire. A pistol.

A terrible truth dawns on your party: the age of the knights and magic is dead, and the world is now in the age of guns and technology. Flintlocks are being mass produced, making all armor and magic useless. Bullets rip through armor from hundreds of feet away. As science advances, the world loses all faith and wonder, making all magic drain from the world.

How does your party survive in this new age of science and rationality, where the greatest of wizards has been reduced to a mundane old coot?

Protection from Normal Missles.
>>
>>97305568
Because at the most basic level, a wizard is the "I can do stuff at long range" guy. That's his deal, to not have to be standing next to someone to exert their power. A non-wizard, at the most basic level, is a knight, who stabs people that are right in front of him, he's the up close guy. And the vast majority of people think a gun is a "I kill you in one shot" weapon reflexively, so "gun" means "do stuff at long range," which intrudes on the wizard's turf.
>but that's not always true, in XYZ game...
I'm speaking in the most general, basic terms possible. I'm not being specific to any game or system, because OP wasn't either.
>>
>>97311517
Do not waste your time pretending that OP's question is even remotely in consideration for something that anything in TTRPGs or fantasy fiction has ever contained. Even in generality. Even as a possible thing. Even as something hinted at in some obscure half-formed thought in the extended lore of some trashy generic novel no one ever read.
>>
>>97311677
The Harpers, who are blessed by Mystra the goddess of magic herself, actively sabotage and prevent the spread of guns. Four of their leaders are her daughters also.
>>
>>97311677
>that anything in TTRPGs or fantasy fiction has ever contained
Perhaps not, but I've seen this subject on this board several hundred times over the years, and elsewhere, even in the Long Long Ago, in the before time, when WotC had a forum on their website.
>>
>>97311965
That's an excuse for why a late medieval-ish setting doesn't have guns, not an example of spellcasters and "gun users" not getting along.

>>97312049
You've seen discussions about why D&D doesn't have guns, even though it does and no one reads their fucking DMG.
>>
>>97312179
>even though it does and no one reads their fucking DMG
Which always came up, but the issue came from people's assumption that a gun is a one shot kill that can't be dodged and goes through fantasy style armor. And it's not really about whether or not that's true, it's that what the arguments revolved around.
>>
>>97312468

The problem is not really about "fantasy style armor". It's fantasy, make it do whatever you want - you'll find examples of people oneshotting plate armor with arrows AND arrows being almost cosmetic.

The problem is aeshtetics. Actually, not even that: the problem is people not getting that the problem is aesthetics. Some people feel that guns don't belong to dnd (probably because Tolkien riffed on the hallf-millennium old trope of "demonic gunpowder"), some feel that dnd is mostly renaissance/early modern and so why the fuck not. Others will feel that guns should oneshot people because western movies, some woulld say that they should work like some vidyas in which they're useful only by the tens. But this is not about history or realism in the slightest, and people should just realize that.

>>97306876
See this is why nobody likes gun fags. Wizard fags will still play by the rule book but gun fags think they can pull a Raiders of the Lost Ark in every situation
>>
>>97312667
Well, the problem is people making assumptions about guns and levels of realism, which isn't helped by some people actually wanting guns to be an undodgeable instant kill weapon, and arguing that they should be as such.
>>
>>97312996
>which isn't helped by some people actually wanting guns to be an undodgeable instant kill weapon
I don't think I've ever encountered anyone who wants that or insists that's how it should be done. Even gun-heavy games where the lethality is very high, like CoC and Delta Green, give a small chance to survive barrages of gunfire.

Ignore the threads and the trolls leave for a while, but the OG puckster starts to create more and more threads. Tell him to fuck off and the trolls jump on.
As soon as a certain type of autists get's involved you're basically fucked. Mods could do something, but they're Reddit brained themselves.

I know they only had 27 episodes to work with, but they should have gone full tilt and showed us more of what each of the different empires were like and how the magic stuff filtered between all of them or at least more applications of "mana"

Instead, we just get space china stronk
>>
>>97305568
Because most fantasy systems are stuck in some weird archaic setting where guns don't exist or are pure flintlocks, and casters have some means of casting for free.

My system is modern fantasy, doesn't have infinite damage cantrips, and mandates casters carry a weapon. Firearms happen to be one of the better options for range if you aren't doing stealth (bows/crossbows are better for that since they're silent and you can enchant them for greater range/accuracy/damage/other effects and normally guns can't be enchanted) so it's best to have them - even if you suffer a massive damage penalty with weapons as a fullcaster.
>>
I hope this thread stands as a reminder to the world how absolutely incompetent and useless the moderators and janitors of this board are.

And I'll be shocked if this post is allowed to stay, since puckee and his trolls are practically protected for fuck knows what reason.
>>
>>97319846
Wasn't the deal that mana dried up and now magic is useless? The thing the antagonists did was different. Much weaker than magic, but theirs doesn't require space be filled to the brim with free mana to consume. That's also why caster shells are so rare.
