Is it worth playing today?
>>
Absolutely not, nothing made before 2014 is. Now fuck off, gramps.

What's a good modern wargame that encapsules the feeling of the old ones?
>>
>>97312453
literally anything not produced by IP hoarding dragons like Lames Jerkslop. Go play a Napoleonic, it's literally the kind of game Gygax was playing before he made Chainmail.
>>
>>97311928
No, it's clunky and limited. Nice that it paved the way for something better.
>>

Worth playing once in the same way that you should watch old scifi and horror movies. More appreciation of where we started, so you can see how far we have come.

Nobody plays Atari for a reason other than nostalgia or curiosity. Same deal.

Wouldn't even say it's worth playing. Reading, maybe, but there's nothing you can gain from playing it.
>>
>>97311928
Not really, some OSR purists swear by it but nowadays there is no reason not to use Delta's Book of War for mass combat.
>>
>>97311928
Read the rules and show them to your group to see if it would be worth it for you.
>>
>>97311928
Nah, only worth it has is for integrating missig stuff in the LBB, like weapon class from man to man.
>>
>>97314338
Correct.

The rewrite retroclone "The Old Lords of Wonder and Ruin" is nice. They really tidyed it up and ordered everything in coherent way were someone who actually wants to play it can find and reference things.
>>
>>97313177
Those aren't purists. They're poseurs and wannabe grognards who regurgitate opinions from culture warring faggots on twitter.
>>
>>97313023
Bro, get over yourself with that Atari take.
>>
>>97311928
It's almost always worth it to play a system without all the baggage of modern tabletop gaming. I genuinely don't understand how we got to a point where 90% of ttrpg/ttwg players don't actually want to play a fucking game, with mechanics, ways to cheat, cheese, etc. Everyone wants to put on a damn theater performance instead.

Lions Rampant? Had only 1 game with it, brought the rulebook, cant find anyone to play cuz everyone suck James slopy seconds.
>>
The only reason I've stuck with 40K is because I don't know of any other wargame where I can play a fleshy alien hivemind. Are there any others?
>>
>>97311928
I use it in my odnd campaign to run mass battles and other things. It's good fun on its own. Required if you want to run odnd. Actually simple to run. Try it out and see what happens. None of the replies here have actually played it.
>>
>>97311928
It was bad for the time, it's worse now, like, even among grogs chainmail is considered as far as wargames go...a bit shit. There is a certain reason why warhammer survived...because it was playable by comparison.
>>
>>97311928
Yeah but it's going to have some chunky rules in it. I like old TTRPGs but will admit they weren't perfect. Same with the new TTRPGs they fix some of the old problems but often enough they have their own problems.
>>
>>97311928
Read the rules and show them to your group to see if it would be worth it for you.
>>
>>97322356
How is it unplayable?
