Why the fuck would you play OSR? Every edition is an improvement on the previous--that's why they make new editions, to refine and better their content. Is it just nostalgia? Are they mentally impaired or senile? What the fuck is wrong with OSR "fans"?
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement on the previous--that's why they make new editions
Get better bait.
>>97312139
the rulebooks are just slimmer and easier to read....
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement on the previousLol shadowrun would like to have a word with you.
>>97312139I'm not a fan of OSR, but it's not any kind of a general truth that games get better with new editions. It's not even clear what 'better' is supposed to mean. TTRPGs aren't technology, and they're all about the subjective experience at individual tables rather than any kind of objectively measurable performance. Some people prefer the subjective experience they get out of OSR type games to what they get out of more modern games. That's all there is to it.
Get better stealth marketing for new books, WotC.
>>97314647>troon coloredhmm
>>97312139also, the rules are simpler, more streamlinedand it's just waaay cheaper for an equal/superior amount of fun: you're not bound to a corporate-ish game company and trapped in sunken cost ($$$) fallacyand OST art is just more based (pic very much related)>>97314834sweetie, calm your mantits down, those are just flowers, nothing soospicious about it uwu
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement on the previous--that's why they make new editions,
>>97312139That was true up to 2E. 3E is, however, a completely different game with a D&D skin. Then it happened again with 4E. Then it happened another time with 5E.
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement on the previous
>>97312139It's your typical low IQ "OLD GOOD NEW BAD" faggots who haven't actually engaged with the new, they're just too autistic to handle change.
>>97319961But older was better, newbie.
>>97314647I'm reading the AD&D PHB right now and Gygax had some severe ADD problems while writing it, including making forward references to 90 pages further to a subsection that doesn't even bear the referenced name, constantly switching between mechanics and fluff, referring you to books you're not supposed to have access to and requiring you to use non-standard dice like a d16 that weren't even invented yet.
>>97312139Correct! OSR is fucking useless shit. Just play the original games as they are. The OSR is a useless relic of a time that no longer is.
>>97312139osr is just d&d for school shooters and incels.
>>97320964>>97321079Why are you so hurt and autistic?
>>97321599I can play the original first edition just fine. I don't need your inferior grift.
>>97321610But that's OSR too. Marge moment.
>>97321612OSR are games inspired by the original games.
If OSR is so bad, why the fuck do later 'editions' use the famous name of the original game? If they are so better, they would each rely on their own merits, not surfing on the fame of the original.
>>97312139Because the people writing today are illiterate?
>>97312139I'm not even sure what OSR is supposed to be at this point.I mean, someone people would say it's about 80's style dungeon crawling with minimal RP and characters who are avatars for exploring/looting at not characters you're acting out. But with other games(Mork Borg etc) just having gritty black and white art is apparently enough?
>>97312139The best edition is always the one just before the current one. We're on 5.5E now, so clearly the best edition is 4.5E
>>97321662If OSR is so good why are there like 3 different flavors of OSR general each filled with people who think their flavor is the TRVE SVPERIOR version of OSR?:
>>97320306It really wasn't. I know I'm older than you, and I can tell you that things were objectively worse in the past. We had more disease, more murder, more pollution. Objectively speaking, the current world is better than the old. Also, yeah, there's been a ton of rules innovations since the creation of RPGs as a concept. Gold as XP is a dogshit method of progression, for example. You didn't have adventures in the old days, you went through dungeons for loot over and over with no greater purpose than getting more loot to get more hirelings to get more loot to get more levels to get more loot etc.
>>97322815Essentials?
>>97324183>We had more disease, more murder, more pollution. We could afford our own fucking houses.
>>97324183>Gold as XP is a dogshit method of progressionthis is completely untrue, it's awesome
>>97324078There's one real general, and then a troll the general has had for 3+ years that simply will not fuck off. His latest solution is running to set up his own osrg but it's all caps you see so its totally different and also it doesn't have hookers and blackjack. Currently osrg regulars are trolling the shit out of it take out multiple years of frustrations over having to endure this shithead while the mods let him do whatever he wanted (to their credit, they slap him down now any time he strays into the real osrg, so it's just comedy and venting now).
>>97319961I think the OSR is largely bullshit because the communities it rose out of were genuinely fucking awful and none of them could ever actually agree if the point was to recapture the magic of D&D as it used to be, hyperfocus on how to make super board game-y dungeon crawls, or to slice the rules down to the barest elements so the only way to play the game is just to play 20 questions with the DM over every minor interaction. However, as someone who is constantly looking for new RPGs, I find that a ton of shit getting made today does fucking suck. There's so much hipster assclown garbage out there and so many others that are just trying to be video games. I can understand how a certain kind of personality would recoil from the fagginess of modern games and believe that the old ways were better, even if they've just got thick nostalgia goggles on and they are obsessing over OSR stuff because it's the "OLD GOOD" category of games.
>>97312139>Every edition is an improvement on the previous--that's why they make new editions, to refine and better their content.
>>97312139The only reason I play OSR is that the only other person willing to DM in my group has a boner for OSR. God, I'd stab someone to be able to play 3.5 again...
>>97312139I wouldn't say that4e > BECMI/RC > 2e > BX > 5e > 1e > Basic > 3e/3.5 > Original
>>97326904All completely different games and should not be compared to each other.
