I have some questions and a premise for a thread. > 1. What is the best system to run a one-shot campaign emulating the story of No Country For Old Men in a way that captures the "FUN" of the movie?>2. If you could make a system for this one-shot to be played from, what would you put into that is notable?>3. What other scenarios would be interesting to play in this style?Having divergences in the story would obviously be critical, like if Moss had actually killed Anton, for it to be fun, but other than just plain ole' rolling dice how would a game where an individual plays as Anton Chigurh, another plays as Lewellyn Moss, another plays as Carson/The Sheriff, etc etc work?
how bout a one-shot where your mom sucks my dick, OP?
Why would I play a game about old men who don't have a country? Is this a game about jews?
>>97313665The movie was made by jews, anon. But yeah. You find millions of dollars in a briefcase. You then get hunted by mexican cartel members, a psychopathic hitman with a medieval squire haircut & another hitman played by Woody Harrelson. Can you survive?
>>97313724What does this have to do with old men?
>>97313774The cop's getting too old for this shit. Woody is getting too old for this shit. etc.
>>97313526Could try it with Fiasco for the fun frosted side or Dread for the serious side.
>>97311017literally getting prompts from your own spam threads. Human centipede shit eating, I swear
>>97313526I'm thinking a reverse investigation game where the enemy is investigating you and running into them is inexorable, but your actions in the downtime determine how quickly you're found and how long you have to prepare. Also have a hidden detection counter whenever your players do something that would get them found faster. Could use gumshoe, used in games like trail of cthulhu. Have investigation work towards who's going to find you, how they found you, how close they are, and how long you have left. Players can be sent away to scout but they have to always maintain control of the million dollars, once that's gone, it gets confiscated by authorities, or all the players die, game's over. The theoretical endgame is the players kill all the pursuers or escape them in such a way they can't be found. Another bit from trail of cthulhu, replace stability/sanity with simple mental resolve, once it runs out your character bails, the million dollars aint worth being hunted anymore. Like in trail of cthulhu you can use this to spur players with their characters' drives and compulsions to drive the game forward if your players are being boring. Just spitballing here, I like thinking about this type of thing.
>>97313802no, shut up,thanks
>>97313848> If they have high enough perception they can succeed in finding the tracker within the briefcase
>>97314016well it doesn't have to go exactly like in the movie
>>97314044I agree yeah, but it could still diverge after that.
Im the guy who made the post suggesting features for such a game in the other thread >>97311068Im currently writing down a barebone set of rules, which Ill post later
>>97314068Your post inspired me to make the thread cause I thought it'd be really cool to expand on with. The atmospheric-noir description sets alot of the tone of the vibe.
You can probably run a Drive campaign on this shit too bruh ngl
>>97314078Thanks. I do think it would be a really cool game/setting. If you think about it the book/movie is sort of like an RPG already>Questionably realistic call to action>OP BBEG>Upgrading weapons>Moments that could sort of be explained by failed skill checks>>97314085I was just thanking that
>>97314108*thinkingIm retarded
>>97314108What do you think of the flowchart/Event Card idea?
>>97314127Explain it
>>97314128Another anon(s) had the idea, >>97311751>>97311705
>>97314150It would work, but only if you wanted to have a Chigurh style villain. Players would also eventually memorize the cards, although its not like anyone would realistically play this game enough for that to happen. Youd want it to be a pretty thick deck either way.
just make a 'villain' that is a thinly disguised DMPC and make sure to railroad your players so they can't ever kill him and you're good
>>97314230I'd want a player(s) to play the villain(s) and the DM to be The Hand Of God or Vague Nihilism.
>>97313526>how would a game where an individual plays as Anton Chigurh, another plays as Lewellyn Moss, another plays as Carson/The Sheriff, etc etc work? You could GM one and a half game where One player is Anton in a 1 on 1 session trying to hunt down players from a different session, if you GM it online you could do it in real time.I once ran an asymmetric asynchronous post apocalyptic campaign with strangers off a facebook group; I got the idea from a situation where one of the players was 30 minutes late so I had his character sleeping in a car wreck and his first meeting with the guy who came on time was having his shoes being stolen and waking up (joining the skype call) with one shoe gone already, then I figured I could expand on the idea with one player or a group being the BBEG of the other until they meet in person in a final confrontation, or intersect earlier.
A wrote most of a (very) basic system for this but Im getting tired and its not finished so Im just going to post the highlights thusfar and work on it more tommorow. If you dont like the concepts tell me.>Wound based health system (including rules for animals), with the ability to "target" certain body parts (sort of)>Turn based grid based combat system (very deadly, any injuries that you survive will probably last you the rest of the game; "ambush" gives you an enormous advantage )>Planned status effects (mostly debuffs)>Block stats consisting so far of Athleticism, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma (yes Im a 5E cuck), and "X" (unnamed so far, affects combat)>Skill stats for shooting, hand-hand combat, medical, electronics, and mechanics (more planned)>"Backgrounds" and positive/negative traits you can buy with points during character creation being worked on>D6>Racist and ESL traits
>>97313526Violence by Luke Gearing
>>97313774The book is narrated by an old small town sheriff who is trying to get this shit together around this [spolier] and eventually giving up. [/spoiler]
>>97314219What's the point in memorizing them when you don't know what's gonna come up next? Any half decent deck of cards isn't going to allow situations where a player can go "don't worry guys, he already shot us twice, we're safe now".
>>97314556How are you envisioning the cards? How specific are they?
>>97314581Admittedly you have to lean on the boardgame side. The way I see it, you could have two sets, one for combat and one for out of combat, the details are mostly up to the system involved, so can't be too specific on that while just theorycrafting, but both in and out of combat you can have the general concept of what the assassin is going to try and do, then it plays out in game. It's more an indication of intent than what actually happens. If a card says "he now questions an NPC that talked with the PCs to get a clue on their movements", it doesn't mean he automatically gets it, rolling is still involved. Likewise, for opening combat you could have "he shoots as soon as he sees them" or "he sneaks up on them" or again, "he confronts them openly and talks before doing anything". If you want to be fancy you can have two sides to each card so that they have more uses.
>>97313848>Columbo, the gameI'd play it.
>>97313526OP, but... there was no Anton Chigurh, it was hypothetical made up villain created by imagination of old sheriff. It's like in Umineko, all scenes with him are "witch magic". Unreliable narration. What exactly are you trying to recreate?
>>97314498No need to get spolier than thou over it
>>97314068>>97314108Isn't this just Cyberpunk 2020/RED with Adam Smasher after your team?
bump
>>97314491I think the "backgrounds" would be pretty fun to explore, being the classes of the game. Hit man, Law Enforcement, Military Vet, Welder/Technician/Engineer(?) EtcBounty Hunter would be cool too
It's real easy when you simply rename everything. This one and Blood Meridian are really fun for evil dastardly sessions. No Country is a party coming across a stash of cursed treasure. Meridian is your characters joining The Wild Hunt and sinking into evil despair.
>>97316859Ive got a couple of those written down so far. If youve ever played Project Zomboid thats sort of what Ive devised, as far as CC. Im sure theres a better way to do it though, although I definitely intend to keep backgrounds as a class system.
>>97314581NTA, but I'm picturing the cards as something you draw once per scene to determine if and how the killer makes his presence felt, and it's up to the GM to determine how that fits into the story. >The Killer arrived here before the players and killed an NPC / destroyed an objective before leaving.>The Killer has activated a tracking device on the party and will arrive in 1d4*10 minutes.>An NPC at this location is now an informant for the Killer and will attempt to call them. >The Killer has acquired a new weapon (roll 1d6 against a table of weapons). Draw another card. >If the Killer is wounded, they will rest and bandage their wounds. Otherwise, draw another card. >The Killer is already here, waiting.
>>97316985Yeah I think something like this would work best, to avoid meta-gaming and to keep the game flow steady. It would also be fun if there were a way to do "mini-games" as the Gas Station Proprietor, Property Management Lady, and the " Are you going to Kill Me?" Guy or even as Carla Jean.
COIN TOSS AS A MECHANICITS SO OBVIOUS

>>97317983Of course.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN..BUT IT'S CYBERPUNK> Instead of money, CyberMoss finds experimental cybernetics, an AI, or a dog that whose consciousness has been blended with that of an AI..you know, something cyberpunk. > Pseudo-Apocalyptic rural North America/Texas/Mexico(the United States may or may not exist as it does politically today) > The Businessman character & scenes virtually stays the same> CyberSheriff's bullshit is the same bullshit just as it was back then
