Douchemachine used to be the largest competition to GW.

Now look at it and laugh
>>
So what's the largest competition to GW now?

>Now look at it and laugh
I dunno man, laughing at cripples feels kinda bad.
>>
Privateer is a company run by fuckups.

At army size play, I really don't think there is one
There's many, many options for skirmish size, but I don't know who's even left at the big army level
>>
>>97330736The Star Wars one is gaining steam. They can't keep up with demand though.
>>
>>97330736
In terms of sales, there's that Star Wars thing, and official D&D-brand miniatures.
In terms of player base, I've got no idea. We got some Malifaux players locally, but that's anecdotal.

I used to be super into Warmachine way way back when I was 19/20 the only SKUs you could buy were teh starter boxes and duplicate warjacks. I remember being super hyped for Mercs when they were first announced, I basically wanted to be Magnus. I even stuck around when they did the IKRPG figures, and even their custom rule set RPG. I even started collecting Hordes minis because I liked the Trollbloods. And I've always liked the comic-book armor aesthetic, but these days I can't get excited anymore. I guess I outgrew the edgy. I stopped playing at all sometime around 2008. I use the minis now for bits when slapping together frostgrave dudes. Maybe I was never a powergamer, I just liked the idea of kitbashing, and metal figures were such a giant paint to saw through and use greenstuff.
I out to get to the basement and try to find my minis and take a photo.

As a wargame?
Either star wars legion, maybe marvel, but both have supply issues.
Battletech is also up there, but it's been there forever and it's never amounted to anything- see the wet fart that was Battletech Gothic.
>>
>>97330736
infinity is the only one i see brought up with any regularity these days. yeah battletech is older, more established and has as big a stick up it's ass about rules as warhammer but they don't have models for all the fucking shit in the fiction
>>
>>97331010
>Battletech Gothic
That was a retarded idea from the get-go and I can't believe it actually got approved for publication.
>>
>>97331010
>see the wet fart that was Battletech Gothic
anyone who shilled for that shit or defended it should be rounded up and dumped in a landfill
(they'll be happy there)

Turns out, everyone else in the non-historical wargame scene is retarded at running a business and will blow their own foot off, and either go under or become a shell of themselves.

Privateer is gone lol
SFG owns the game now

You mean their best-selling boxed set ever? Cope you fags LOL/LMAO

I've been playing the Song of Ice and Fire game by CMON and it's been depressing. They've mismanaged their way into losing all their original IPs, and now their big plan for ASOIAF is to fucking gut the best rules of the game so that players will better adhere to the original "vision" the lead developer has for the game, instead of playing the game as it emerged over years of active gaming. The lead developer seems to be retarded, incidentally, and has a pretty stupid vision.
>>
>>97331161
this is actually most companies doing /tg/ stuff full stop. They either have bad ideas, bad business sense, bad work ethic or just plain don't know what the hell they're doing and just got lucky once.
Most companies are also one or two dudes in a shack

Battletech is still stuck in the Regan era. Grognards are still crying out for more 4SW stuff and refuse to move on from 1984. Grogs don't spend because they're cheap, so game doesn't grow, but they tantrum if you release anything else, or if their group tries even 1990 clantech. I remember the fat grogs in my flgs throwing a huge tantrum when mechwarrior 2 released in 1995 and it was the clans instead of 4SW. They've had this problem for the last 40 years, nothing will change.

Infinity is way too complex and niche. Soicast also made all the details on their minis soft. They did well in N4 to remove spanglish and nested rules, but rebloated in N5. Lore is actually bad, it's very boring, bland and generic. I remember when Toni Macayana died, everyone just asked when they'll rerelease the tikbalang. No one cares at all.

Neither even came close to how big warmahordes was in their glory days. Lore was top tier, so many character threads were followed very closely, Stryker warcrimes, Denny vs Hayley, Vlad's promised prince, if harbinger was going to bring menoth down to earth, if the orgoth were going to return. Every week someone invented some insane combo. Self kill for souls were the craziest ones, I remember most menoth and cryx armies killed all their own troops, bloated their casters to tomorrow then shot out some insane spell to blast the enemy caster away.
>>
>>97331661
Correct. Selling it to SFG was their final act of fucking up.
>>
>>97331965
>Their best selling box set ever
Their "best selling" is a fraction of what GW makes on their worst selling CAD shit.

Protectorate of Menoth was the coolest and most original part of the setting to me and the only one I ever really had any interest in and apparently they don't even exist anymore. I was super excited for both war machine and horses like fifteen years ago but it's clear they fumbled their chances enormously.

Side note can anyone tell me WHY they axed Menoth? The idea of a small polity being under the government and thumb of a larger more powerful and technologically advanced empire, with technical Protectorate status but the reality that both sides are building up arms and preparing for inevitable war, and said smaller polity actually being a bunch of extremely faithful zealots whose God actually exists and intercedes on their behalf, with believers who die and go to his side fighting at his side even in the afterlife because even though he's the patron deity of humanity he's not the only god in the setting and actually has his hands full himself, which also explains why he doesn't just intervene directly and deus ex machina curb stomp was really cool.

99% of the time you see a "The Church" faction in a TTRPG or wargame it's just fantasy Catholicism or the Holy Roman Empire, in both Warhammer and 40k that's also the case, so it was actually really interesting that Cygnar was the significantly larger and more technologically advanced faction of the two. Were they just axed for being "problematic" because they sometimes acted like jihadists? From their perspective Menoth is 100% real and the actual creator god of humanity in the Iron Kingdoms, why WOULDN'T they eagerly go to his side if called? Ask the average Dwarf in the Forgotten Realms if they'd mind Moradin drafting them, were they just worried about the emphasis on martyrdom?
>>
>>97332398
>Side note can anyone tell me WHY they axed Menoth?

They were used as a jobber faction in the MK3 end times scenario. They were probably selected because P3 being a Seattle based company were eager to be rid of the 'deus vult' crusaders faction for real world political reasons.
>>
>>97331965
Seeint warhammer fags still salty that Battletech can do their whole aesthetic better is great
>>
>>97332428
Menoth is not a deus vult faction. They had zealots with turbans throwing bombs and shooting bottle rockets lmao. Warmachine came out just after the invasion of Iraq, and menoth reflected that.

Over time, they became the dumping ground for low tech fantasy tropes. They were truly unique, had knights, paladins, prophets, saints. Their underdog status was pretty unique too.

They ended when the Iraqi occupation became unpopular, which was reflected in Stryker committing warcrimes.

>>97332398
Cryx is more unique - steampunk skeleton dragon pirates zombies.

But yes, pretty sucky how only America and Russia survived, those 2 were unoriginal af.
>>
>>97332197
the fundamental problem is that most new games are made by wargamers who make games they themselves would want to play. and that's always doomed to failure. no matter how good your game, your models or your setting, it's doomed. those things might get you a big initial boost of popularity, maybe you can even ride it for 10 years or so, but it's guaranteed to implode. look at confrontation, malifaux, infinity, dropzone, mercs, guildball, any of them. all dead or limping along as a shadow of their former selves.

GW is successful because they know it's not about making games, it's about milking players' wallets. It's about product launches and advertising, and pandering to the market segments that are least discerning. they never support anything they make, their typical product is untested and barely functional, they regularly discontinue players' armies, they overcharge and underdeliver on every metric. and they just keep on winning because of it. no wargame ever succeeds long term unless it's committed to fucking its players over.
>>
>>97330704
The only way to revive it is with an amazon series
>>
>>97332398
They're coming back this summer.
>>
>>97332369
It's a good thing I replied to someone coping that Battletech Gothic was "a wet fart" and not someone saying it sold as much as a Warhammer kit, then.

If you need to move the goalposts we can have a different discussion, though. What's your contention, exactly?

Their "best selling" is a fraction of what GW makes on their worst selling CAD shit? Ok, their operating costs are also a fraction of what GW makes.
>>
>>97332636
Cygnar gets points in my book because lightning is never not a cool aesthetic. Though if I had ever got into the game before it imploded I probably would have gone with Retribution or Convergance, because I like how their warjacks look.
>>
>>97330736
3D printing and every other hobbyist game that isn't based on tourneyfagging. Especially miniature agnostic games too. It looks like GW have split the market and now they cater to tourneyfags and paintfags and hobbyists look the other way.
Hobby market has been trending towards historicals and alt-historicals. Small skirmish games and rank & flank.
>>97331965
Didn't BT get discovered by the sjw's? Once they get bored of it, its going nowhere. Going to stay the same stuffy future historic game played by grogs, like it always has been.

I think its a good time to be a wargamer. Indie and passion projects are pouring out of the internet, and it's all free or cheap. I can only imagine it sucks if you're relying on the LGS element.
>>
>>97334752
Now is the worst time in be in an awg.

The first and greatest golden age was during warmahordes, confrontation, at43, malifaux, peaking with X wing, then ending when Guildball died.

Second era was the Kickstarter era, which produced games like infinity, kingdom death, and lots of 3d prints. It was more boardgames than anything though. Died in COVID.

GW used to be retarded, completely unbalanced, crappy models, erratic release schedule. Iirc there was a period where it was 2 years between marine codices and Orks hadn't been updated for 6 years. Now they've addressed a lot of the issues and more, will be very hard to unseat.
