Was the Satanic Panic REALLY that bad or has it been overblown over the decades?
>>
>>97359823
It was even more subdued due to the niche nature of the hobby than shit like Christians freaking out over Harry Potter, which wasn't that widespread either.
>>
Insofar as D&D is concerned? Yes. It was freaking out at "real" names of Demons from what are basically Medieval fanfictions being in D&D, and that was it.
The actual Satanic Panic was accusations that various schoolteachers and parents were sexually abusing children based on the testimony of police and psychologists who fished for accusations from children until the children gave them what they wanted so they'd go away. That was "real" as well.
Sexual abuse of children is, of course, also real without airquotes. As are Satanists, who are mostly just atheist larpers.

>>97359823
Why would anyone think that the satanic panic was "overblown" with the situation of the world unleashing right now? Past year there was a massive wave of censorship. Alarms about purity and puritanism are all time high. The only way you think these moral panics are overblown is if you bury your head in the sand.
>>
>>97359823
It's been completely overblown because everyone thinks being a pretend victim gives them special rights now.
It's unironically the same kind of eye-rolling stupidity as people who try to insist "gamer" is an oppressed identity.
Anyone who brings up the satanic panic unprompted is always, ALWAYS a total fucking wet rag, entitled asshole.
>>
>>97359846
If you're concerned about demons, then you should be concerned about the Medieval fanfictions having insane obviously false descriptions of them.
If you're concerned about Satanists raping children, you should be concerned that the police and psychologists effectively invalidated any legitimate concerns by coercing children into giving false testimony Salem Witch Trials style.
If you're concerned about the rich raping children, this was never a part of the Satanic panic of the 80's.
If you're concerned about Satanists, please make fun of them as often as possible.
>>
>>97359823
Of course it wasn't really that bad

>>97359897
Because I lived through it. Today's stuff is worse than McCarthyism worse than satanic panic.
>>
>>97359823
When I was in school even as recently as 2007 it was common for many parents to absolutely prohibit their kids from playing Magic the Gathering or reading Harry Potter because magic and witchcraft were satanic. This wasn't just a super niche religious community thing either, even at a large high school ranked highly in the state with people going to top ranked schools and the naval academy and shit our valedictorian was my best friend and his mom thought dinosaur fossils were faked by Satan to inspire doubt in god alongside the typical "no magic" stuff.

Maybe now that Rowling is considered persona non grata by trans activists and is much more associated with culture war shit than just tweeting about how wizards shat themselves and Dumbledore is gay Harry Potter is more accepted with a team sports mentality that anything they hate must be good, idk.
>>
>>97359918
The shit you're saying sounds like the kind of thing some snowflake on r/teenagers would make-up because they want to throw themselves a faggy pity party.

>>
>>97359823
It was really prevelant. Was it really "bad?" No. But it was in the media. In the news. On talk shows. At PTA meetings. Your friends' parents didn't let their kids play with you after whatever. You got bullied.

It was a thing. It happened. It wasn't particularly life changing, but it certainly left an impression on a lot of us. It was around you all the time. But no one I've ever met suffered any dire consequences as a result. Maybe you lost a friend or your parents wouldn't buy you certain games or books. Is that "bad?" In the scheme of things? No.
>>
>>97359918
Fascinating. Living in suburban Indiana and working alongside hundreds of different blue collar guys that did contract work for my dad I only ever met one single guy that believed in actual Earth is 6000 years old type of stuff. Talked to me about a website with "the truth about Genesis" over a lunch break while everybody else that still went to church without fail busted his balls over it.

One of these anecdotes of ours sounds a lot more grounded and plausible. I'll leave it at that.

>>
>>97359918
Just a few years ago, (post 2020 I mean) my local library was getting flak from some of the old ladies in town for hosting MtG nights because of demons and magic. The head librarian is a big MtG and 40k nerd and he kind of ranted about this at times, so clearly it was more than a few snide comments here and there.

My best friend's mom in the early 2000's was against him playing Yugioh because of demons. She turned him onto the Pokemon TCG instead. Nowadays, she's into Wiccan stuff and "casts spells."

It didn't. Looking it up, all it said was Hitler would be someone with higher than average charisma. It doesn't condone his actions. But the Satanic Panic peddlers needed a bogeyman to push and D&D was a good target because it was new and niche, same with out-of-the-home daycare at the time. Couple that with the rapid rise of conspiratorial thinking in the late 70s and early 80s and fears of Satan (blame "The Exorcist" and the book "Michelle Remembers") and it was a heady time to get "big" in blaming all of society's woes on everything except that which was actually causing problems.

I get that this shit does happen, but not everyone experiences literally every single negative Republican stereotype in one drive like that. When people just start listing stereotypes from YouTube comments, what it means is that they're fucking lying.
I can accept that someone ran afoul of a few of these issues, don't get me wrong; when it sounds over-the-top and like a parody though, it means they're fucking lying. They're lying because they're used to lying on reddit and getting upvoted for it. Here though, I'm calling this retard a >>97359918 a lying fucking fag because being insulted like that is the only thing that shocks these cunts out of their lying, narcissist behavior.

I think the pendulum has swung too far and the tail is wagging the dog unlike during the other two. The satanic panic wasn't as wide spread as the red scare and McCarthyism and it also didn't have a real target. It was a fictitious enemy, there just weren't people doing what was claimed. The religious zealots lost the attention of the majority when eventually people, like with McCarthyism which ran out of real targets, wised up as investigation after investigation showed no evidence of anything to panic about. Today, it's purely opinion and ideology based, even more so than McCarthyism, and you know people feel about opinions and their ideologies.

Post better bait. The left has been winning basically every battle for centuries now. We get one little illusion that we might turn things back around and now the pendulum has 'swung too far to the right'.

What I'm trying to say is this; it happened, but it was a far smaller issue than people imply it to be. It's, "I had an awkward conversation with my Catholic mother once,"-tier, not "I fought against segregation in the 1960s,"-tier.
Get over yourselves, holy fuck. Nobody gives a shit about it, it was an extremely weak, mild problem. You pussies just enjoy putting on the waterworks, it's Munchausen-By-Politics, shut the fuck up. It wasn't that bad and you're not fooling us. I also knew exactly those types of people. They lacked an imagination and believed all sorts of shit to explain why they can't rotate the cow.
The devil is in you if you can.
It is now spinning rapidly tail over teakettle, the grass is thick and green, now the sky is checkerboard. None of that matters now, because the cow wearing a suit and asking you for the first dance, will you take her hoof?
The lounge jazz pumped through the audiophile speakers hooked up in the middle of a field sit on a desk, there is an envelope lying next to them with instructions on how to operate the speaker, but it's in Japanese. There is an aux cord disconnected from them and curled up under one, did you look for it? There does not appear to be a jack on either of the devices for you to connect your phone, what next? The power cable runs to a portable generator humming under the table like a bomb.
And the cow is still waiting and looking kind of exasperated you haven't responded yet, but she's smiling like she already knows your answer.
Was your cow high definition or low poly? Can you switch them?

>It's unironically the same kind of eye-rolling stupidity as people who try to insist "gamer" is an oppressed identity.
Nobody says that, only SJWs who hate gamers.
>>
>>97359823
Obviously, anything like this is mythologized to some extent. But it was also still real. There's a reason why we poke fun at Jack Chick's tracts as an example of the absurdity of it. There are still some remnants of it though, because people are ignorant. Controlling conservative parents, religious fanatics, etc.

Once, while I was in my high school DnD group, we had the idea in our heads that it would be neat to find a place to play in public. So we went to a local coffee shop. Slow hours, only one old lady working there. She came over to check on us, and we had to explain to her that, no, this wasn't some dark and weird thing, and that we weren't a cult, or suicidal or something; it was just a game where we rolled dice and told stories. We did not go back. I almost hope that she thought we had vanished into dark mist in the night or something.

>>
>>97359823
The problem is that modern Christians don't understand censorship, which means the satanic panic didn't have as much of an effect.
SJWs are experts at sabotaging and censoring, which had a much greater effect on nerd culture.
>>
>>97360471
>Conflating slow, broad changes in societal views as being the same as deliberate sabotage by a fairly modern movement
>Suggesting that conservative backlash to things that don't fit their worldview is the same as inclusion
If you were right somewhere in there, you'd be wrong. This is because you don't understand, at the fundamental level, that inclusivity is an observable slow-turning gear in the history of humanity and not a psyop.
>>
I'm in the process of deprogramming my gf from her strict 7th Day Adventist upbringing.
Here's a short list of the /tg/ stuff she thought was satanic and/or, i shit you not, controlled by the illuminati:
>Magic the Gathering
>Dungeons and Dragons
>Warhammer 40.000
>non-D6 dice
>comic books

I got her to try playing MtG and make a character for DnD5e, and she at least somewhat realized it was nothing more than math dressed up with fancy pictures. Still a long way to go but slow and steady and so forth.

TL;DR: Yes satanic panic was, and still is in some parts, very real.

My best friend was not allowed to have anything to do with harry potter when I was a kid. I snuck him the books, and he watched the movies on vhs at my house.

When I was 14-ish, I lost members of my gaming group because one of my friends' moms heard we were playing d&d and she told other parents and kids that the game was known to make kids kill their siblings while sleepwalking. This was in 2006.

Not that anon but i grew up in secular country where religions where a class subject during most of my school years. Yes, religions, as in we discussed most of the mayor religions and some some the smaller one as well, in addition to what is and isn't a cult.
No one flipped their shit and everything was civil. It gave us a wide view of how to dissect religions and religious traditions.
