It's less paint colours being a big factor and more not relying on obsessive edge highlighting and the older scheme using pigment powders and oil washes for weathering, which the Eavy Metal style painting avoids like the plague
The comparison between the old resin Mechanicum Myrmidon and the new plastic ones is another example of this
