>Black Legion no longer hard into Chaos worship, Abaddon sees himself as not a slave and is disdainful of the religious
>Iron Warriors see relying on the Dark Gods as a weakness
>Night Lords are edgy atheists
>Emperor's Children don't care about Slaanesh specifically really, are just concerned with pleasuring themselves and being freaky. Fabius actively hates Chaos
>Thousand Sons hate Tzeentch for fucking them and try to fuck him over when they can
>Alpha Legion retconned to basically never having been religious at all
>World Eaters are crazy and barely verbal anymore
>Red Corsairs see relying on Dark Gods as weak and now have a whole cadre of troops that are "free" of Chaos influence
>Only Word Bearers and Death Guard seem to actually venerate the Chaos Gods
Why are so few CSM actually religious anymore? Back in the day even your average Alpha Legion boy would be all FOR THE DARK GODS
>>
For the same reason they made all the legions that rebelled for evil or petty reasons actually "justified" or "misunderstood", without realizing it made them look even more retarded. Like being chaos marines that supposedly don't care about chaos.

I agree with your larger point but these two seem perfectly in line with their patrons to me

inb4 muh number went up

Sounds appropriate to the setting actually. Rationalizing that you're not being used as a tool. And the dark powers themselves probably prefer you getting out there and amusing them by causing carnage instead of just praying to them constantly.

They're trying to do a depiction that catches more audience.
The dark worshippers can still do edgy spiky evil marines.
The fedoras can still do snowflake spiky marines.
The double fedoras can do
>my army is a commentary on the folly of man and hubris blahblahblah
>>
OP is a secondary that missed the point.
The traitors do not 'worship' their patrons, outside Word Bearers; they emulate and embody the aspects of their patron, instead.
>>
>>97387422
Cope, chaos marines literally fellate chaos any time they do something chaos related, which is basically everything for them.
>>
>>97387179
The average CSM fan thinks "I'm just using chaos as a tool" is freaking epic so that's what GW gives them.

If they were smart, they would (and have in the past) show how that overconfident mindset is exactly how you get corrupted into a gibbering mindslave by chaos, but alas.
>>
>>97387499
Even secondaries should be aware of that, authors of the books repeatedly say it, and even flat out stated that people got worse after falling.
>>
>>97387179
>slaves to darkness do not actually enjoy being slaves
whoa....
>>
>>97387220
Number went up. Oink oink, piggies.
>>

Not enjoying it is fine (and even then, in the past most were perfectly fine with it, when not actively enjoying it), wanting to push the narrative that you're actually not in it at all is another thing. Some characters like that here and there can be alright, but now, after archaon, everyone and their mother is supposedly like that. It gets boring fast.
>>
>>97387179
Because Chaos is the designated anti-Imperium faction so any human group that opposes the Imperium gets turned to Chaos regardless. See Siege of Vraks.

>Iron Warriors see relying on the Dark Gods as a weakness
Iron Warriors consider pretty much everything a weakness and use captured daemons as engines, so how is that not in line with their usual vibe? They're hyper-efficient industrial assholes who hate everything and everyone including themselves.
>>
>>97387550
Lord Mortkin and other chaos cuckerinos were also like that but Norscans are built different than space manrunes anyway.
>>
>>97387179
I thought the whole point was that people who throw their lot in with Chaos and go "hurr durr WE'RE FREE" are all fools being played like a fiddle by the dark gods no matter how powerful and influential they are, up to and including Abaddon himself?

Also the Red Corsairs have always had non-Chaos renegade Space Marines hanging around, Huron and his former Astral Claws turned to Chaos but they've been mentioned as having all sorts of pirates and mercenaries and other assorted rebels floating around them for ages now. They've always been the least explicitly Chaos-aligned of the major CSM groups.
>>
>>97387179
Religion is dumb IRL because there's no evidence for any of it and people are just believing it because they want it to be true, but Word Bearers are cool because they actually are correct.
>>
>>97387703
Chaos gods are real, but are they really gods and not just imprints in Warp, ultimately a natural phenomenon?
>>
>>97387581
>Dorn tricks the Iron Warriors into rejecting Chaos by pointing out to Perturabo he doesn't need to capture demons to use as engines for his warmachines
>>
>>97387725
I mean people have regularly worshipped the Sun...
>>
>>97387543
I mean I agree with you, I got out in 8th
>>
>>97387703
dumb faggot
>>
>>97387179
GW is accidentally based and admitted anti-theism is more corrupt than religion
>>
>>97387725
>are they really gods and not just imprints in Warp, ultimately a natural phenomenon?
First you must define what a god is.
>>
>>97387422
Back in the DOW days when I first got into it pretty much every CSM was all “for the dark gods!”
>>
>>97387941
So your understanding of the setting comes from a tiny handful of voice responses in a video game?
