Erda is actually a name taken from the mother of the norns in norse mythology, specifically Wagner's ring. The norns create fate so even though Odin is an all-powerful god he's ultimately beholden to whatever they decide. So there's often this dichotomy in fantasy and sci-fi where men take an active role while females manage things from the background that seems to be derived from those mythological archetypes. Another good example are the horned god and triple goddess from Wicca.
