Bear with me for a moment

What is the POINT of buying D&D? Like, what are you paying for?
>The amazing setting of Dragonlance (and other D&D settings) that you gain access to!
No, most people just run their own setting.
>The dev playtesting which means player classes and enemies have already been balanced and you don't need to
No, its really bad actually.
>The unique ideas unlike every other fantasy setting
Its a generic fantasy kitchen sink, if you really want a beholder you can just use it "illegally" in your game.
>THE DICE
Not part of the purchase

Is it just me or you're actually, genuinely buying NOTHING?

Damn, just as I thought about posting a question like this myself. You, sir, have a good taste in gaming. Just halfway through the 5th generation of first Agarest. From what I've seen, there are barely any around with this does it nicely. Rogue Legacy, being a rougelike game (hence the name as well) doesn't give any real personality for your characters in order to make you care for them...you suck at playing and end up finishing the game after 100 nameless generations of throwaway knights. What makes Agarest really stand out is that each generation is

unique, giving the children different looks, although maintaining that generation's personality, and changing the stats depending on the love interest. It made you kinda work for it and make a tough considering that the love interests are all lovable. Making your son become a mage or a gunslinger because of his mother is a unique feature, a feature I hope the devs of Agarest will make again, or someone picks up on the idea. Crusader All]

Wtf are people buying D&D for? Anonymous 01/21/26(Wed)00:04:01 No.97407419▶
Bear with me for a moment

What is the
>>
>>97407419
Well
>a complete ruleset ready to play and formatted for accessibility
>introductory chapters like building bruenor for even easier and faster starting
>nearly a hundred pages of spells you dont have to write yourself, integrated into a dozen classes you also dont need to write yourself
>some gaming advice
>backgrounds and races you dont have to write yourself
If you look at other books
>hundreds of pages of pregenned monsters or randomized tables to minimize prepwork, all prestructured within a difficulty and level scaling system to make encounter design and drops reliable
>>
Maybe they just see things differently than you.

If someone plays Dragonlance and thinks the balance is good this thread is not aimed at them. This is for the fencesitters who say it has huge problems but is still good.
>>
Taylor Swift isn't the greatest musician and McDonald's isn't the greatest restaurant but normies are a hivemind who think whatever the most popular thing is must be the best one and it reinforces itself, I don't know how you haven't figured this out already.
>>
>>97407419
1. Building all of that from scratch sounds very time consuming.
2. Its easier to get a game going when everyone already has experience when the same set of rules.
>>
>>97407419
Most games aren't in homebrew settings. They're in mainline settings. You also ignored the rules and art and production value. And the feeling of identity that brand-loyalty, from D&D to sneakers to brand-name breakfast cereal to fastfood loyalties to favorite airlines and hotel chains to genres of music and fantasy novelists and comic book publishers and blah blah blah a billion times over that consumers buy into every moment of every day.

DND or not, having the books is more enjoyable than using a notebook or phone to read pdfs

Where did I mention Dragonlance balance in my post?
D&D is just a well desigend system that gets the job done.
>inb4 autistic screeching about "well designed"
I stand by that. So far me and my table tried and played:
Shadowrun
CoC
Witcher RPG
GURPS
WFRPG
Coriolis
Godbound
Wrath and Glory
Heredium
Pathfinder 1&2
The Dark Eye
Godbound
and the fucking Discworld RPG

and we went back to D&D because it just works (tm) and the rulebooks are actually usable. You never notice good design but you will always notice bad design and I've read some shitty fucking rulebooks over the years.

What system are you playing?

Acceptance into the biggest nerd cred group. Also DM's probably like that they can just buy stories to run without a lot of personal work.

The bots are broken again
>>
>>97407604
The emotional fragility of the little boys on 4chan who can't conceive of the possibility that someone disagrees with them is shocking. You guys convince yourselves that there are bots, conspiracies, jannies and trolls, all to avoid the simple possibility that: someone disagrees with you on the internet.

>>97407509 is my post. 4chanX currently struggles with the new captcha ironically when "No Verification" required so I have to use the old post form now and then. Then I copy paste what I wrote from the 4x field into the old form. Mistakes can happen.

>>97407419
In the post-OGL fiasco era most people don't buy D&D. They pirate it.
>>
>>97407843
I don't believe you, the current D&D audience of bandwagoners who got into it through Critical Role and Stanger Things isn't going to have the balls to pirate anything.

>>97407881
>have the balls to pirate
lol that's cute

I just like having neat books on my shelf.

Selling products is about selling an experience and consumer identity. WotCDnD comes with one of those more or less prebuilt for you by the online community and the commodification of nerddome for almost 2 decades of big bang theory and everything that followed from it.
DnD has been the front line name for ttrpgs the entire time there have been ttrpgs as we understand them.
One of the key parts of advertising is just repeatedly reminding the world you exist immediately in front of them. Repeatedly.
The consumer buys the thing that they associate with their desire.
That's about it really. Some of them actually even try it. A smaller number compared to sales, but sales doesn't give a fuck about that. An even smaller number like ttrpgs or can sustain playing them repeatedly. An even smaller number try running them. And an even smaller number than that end up trying, running and playing things that aren't backed by all the contextual factors outlined above.
>tldr
First on the plate, cultural inertia, advertising money, nerds aren't smart just like the idea of smrt.
>>
>>97407419
I like some of the settings. In particular I like Eberron and Wilderlands of High Fantasy.
>>
>>97407459
It's not a case of hivemind, but of lowest common denominator. It's not about the product being good, it's about the product being accesible and inoffensive. It rises to the top because it makes money, not because people love it.
>>
>>97407509
>I tried a bunch of heart breakers and knockoffs but never got off the plantation so I went back to the familiar
many such cases
>>
>>97408161
GURPS is not a D&D knockoff.
>>
>>97408186
>doesn't know what a heartbreaker is
>>
>>97407419
I don't think anyone out there is weighting their options and choosing DnD over other games. It's all turbo normoids who got introduced to the hobby via Critical Role or Stranger Things in the last 10 years and think DnD is the only TTRPG that exists.
