It ceases to be an identifier beyond “this game has a player character” which is an almost irrelevant identifier. RPG is an identifier used to differentiate, colloquially, whether the game has an overarching story or meaningful stories (and sometimes story defining choices within), and if the game has stats that actually matter in a character’s capabilities. Games like Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Quest, Cyberpunk 2077 are definitely role playing games. Telling people Zelda is an RPG is going to get people looking at you funny because yes you are playing a character, a role, sure, but it’s not like you can do anything to meaningfully change the role you’re playing. The story is taking a backseat to the action, the adventure, even, and progress and the strength of Link and his capabilities are entirely fixed based upon game progression and items. Now based on how I described it the paradoxical part is how you could describe any of these games as either action adventure or role playing. In fact, you could even go as far as to want to look more like in describing them as action adventure role playing games. But nobody does that shit, on the whole we’ve agreed that parties and hitting things and leveling up story and is an RPG and rolling around at the speed of sound and dungeons more about puzzles and platforming instead of stat checks is action adventure.
