How did you pick what army to collect? I have my preferences, the guys I think look the coolest, but I also want to try playing the tabletop game. I don't want to face the realization 200$ in that the army I thought looked cool is actually shit to play.

We are getting a new edition (11th) in a few months so even if it's top tier now, it might not be under the new system/rules.

Play a couple of armies you like the look of on Tabletop simulator to get the feel for them.
Buy one infantry kit from each army you like and see which one you actually enjoy painting enough that you could see yourself painting another 80 models like that.
Read the lore of a couple of characters and subfactions and maybe even a book from each army you like and see if anything really resonates with you

Buying for how they play in [current meta] is a bit of a trap. Chances are by the time you get an army actually on the table it'll be next edition or close to anyway, and rules are in constant flux. Just pick whatever you truly like the aesthetics of most, because you have to be the one working on them for the indefinite future. Rules and power levels come and go.

What ere you considering, anyway?

Tonk. Post wips and models.
>>
>>97483125
Your army will only be good once generally unless you're constantly buying for the meta every dataslate update. It's better to focus on the modeling side because if you are overly focused on the rules you will be frustrated when the thing you like is suddenly different.
>>
>>97483125
>I don't want to face the realization 200$ in that the army I thought looked cool is actually shit to play.
Do you mean shit to play (Don't like the playstyle) or shit to play (My army has been nerfed to oblivion and can't win games). If it's the latter most of that won't matter since a new edition is coming soon and armies will be all over the place for the first few months. If it's the former just do research on how they play (Don't like rolling a fuckload of dice? Probably don't want to play Orks then). That or just go by tried and true Rule of Cool
>>
>>97483136
>What army/armies are you thinking of?
Night Lords because they're my favorite csm chapter and the lord of change is either my favorite looking unit or my second favorite unit.
The Tau because I dig their mechs and the Ta'unar is the other unit that I adore.
The dark eldar for the haemonculi.
There's also an evil voice in the back of my mind telling me to collect Black Templars because just look at them, but from all my interactions with their fans it's put me off the entire army.
>>97483141

Those are two different factions.
>Ta'unar
That is Forgeworld. Pay attention to the tags in the online store, "Ships from UK" means it's a Forgeworld product ie. resin. Not that you couldn't start your army with some plastic dudes and build up to working with resin, but it's typically a less forgiving material and not recommended for newcomers.
>>
>>97483202
>Those are two different factions.
Shouldn't a chaos faction like the night lords be able to field a chaos demon?
>That is Forgeworld.
I'm not going to start with the Ta'unar if I pick the Tau, I like pretty much all of their non auxillary units, but having that titan as a goal to work towards is a positive for me.

The """""meta""""" has been a total joke for all of 40k's history and GW balance is akin to shoving all factions into a tumble dryer at once and seeing what comes out. NEVER collect/play with it in mind lest it suck the love of the setting out of you in favor of hopping armies every two seconds and/or paypigging for the most slanted and un-fluffy lists you've ever seen.
>>
Finally primered my pieces
>>
>>97483212
To be honest I haven't looked at current CSM rules so not sure, but it's dicey. GW have this utter stupidity that mortals and daemons should be separated but in some editions they can be mixed via ally rules or whatever, it's insanely dumb and if you go for a mixed chaos army tou just have to accept that you won't be able to field all of it in certain editions. I'd check out the codex before going in on that one. Lorewise the night lords aren't a specifically tzeentchian worshipping faction, but ofc you can always make your owndudes lore why they're teaming up with a LoC.

>having that titan as a goal to work towards is a positive for me
Good attitude, just want you to be aware of FW so you don't drop a motza and end up with a resin model you don't know how to deal with and potentially screw up.

Alright disreputable fellows, time for a challenge.
Invent a combat patrol/start collecting box that technically works, but is fundamentally shit. As in, the units can interact and stuff, but the box is just utter shit despite the fact it's technically an army. It could have horrible re-buy value. The unit rules could just be bad. It could have named characters. However, at it's core, the boxset must technically work. Here is my humble example for guard.

Buying second hand can help, or aligning with starter sets but those depend on what faction. I bought up an AoS khorne army for pretty cheap by buying starters and selling off the sigmarines for around 60-70% of the box cost (still was a saving for those buying them over getting the kits individually).

You're paying to support a store or the IP. I don't disagree that 40k costs more than it probably should, but I've seen some stores die and view it all as supporting a place to convene and play at. 3d printing for bits to convert your dudes is amazing though
>>

>>97483605
Ok but what exactly do you mean by support? Painting tutorials? Playing tutorials? Customer service? What?

>>
>>97483596
>khorne berzerkers
A too easy, since you're only replacing the chainblade with the eviscerator they'll still have access to their pistol.
A space marine would need to hands to swing an eviscerator effectively in combat, but while they're just running they can easily one hand it and shot with their pistol in the other.
>>
>>97483605
>>97483614
Modern scale models kits blow GW the absolute fuck out so much it's not even funny. You'd expect the top miniature company in the fucking world to be able to cast barrels in one piece by now
>>
>>97483596
They would still have the pistol if the datasheet lists it under the equipment, it would just be in their holster if you put one on the model for wysiwyg.
>>
>>97483591
You're not going to get quality of detail anywhere near a GW box unless you go through a specific, laborious and potentially toxic 3d printing process. Cheap or mid range printing is useful but not a real replacement unless you don't care about the fine detail and just want a decent mini to game with.
>>

This. Similar with lego where if you're missing pieces or whatever you can email and they ship it out to you, James used to send you a whole new box if you had anything damaged/missing. They still do but really cracked down on it, I bought a rubric marines battleforce a few years ago that had some damage to the sorcerer lord, and when I emailed they wanted some receipt reference number I would only have gotten from a Warhammer store purchase. Stuff like that ends up being funny sometimes. If you swap BT crusaders out to their melee loadout they gain a chainsword and heavy bolt pistol, but don't actually lose their old regular bolt pistol. I mean yeah, but you shouldn't stay blind to the extra bells and whistles that potentially come with a higher price point. I used to work security for a higher end hotel, this place also had residential units which some folk bought up and listed on airbnb, because of course they did. It was far too common for me to encounter airbnb guests stumbling around the lobby, unable to get into their rooms after a night out partying and misplacing their key, and there was technically nothing the hotel staff or I could do for them since they were customers of airbnb (we didn't have their personal info to do the adequate security checks to let them back in). Was the hotel room price steep? Sure, but it came with extra services. If you want to save some scratch by circumventing corporations you have to understand and deal with any risks that come from that.

I think the idea with this month was leaving the theme up to the painters interpretation. I think it could also be fun to hear why they interpreted it the way they did because you could interpret it a number of ways
>the gun is physically large
>the gun is very large in proportion to the guy
>the gun is very strong

It's common, polite practice to walk your opponent through your list at the start of a game. Obviously you can't describe everything in minute detail, but you should point out anything you think might be surprising or unexpected, or where you're using a legal option that doesn't actually match the weapon the model is holding.

It's not against the rules to avoid mentioning surprises and gotchas in the list, but generally people who make a habit of that get a bad reputation and word gets around.

For the wargear question I don't have that situation in my armies so can't help ya. It's probably a case by case basis.

I play Death Guard and their general play style has changed every single edition since they became a proper army. At the end of the day, that's been good for me, since I made the decision to no longer bother with the GW ruleset at all.
My suggestion is to just pick the coolest army and that's that. Armies don't even play that differently from each other in 10th due to homogenization of the rules.

My reccomendation is to get a pool of 3 or so factions that you really like the aesthetic of, then pick the one whose broad gameplay you like the most. DESU if you haven't started an army yet a space marine (or one of the divergent chapters) army would be good due to the amount of flexibility and models.

As for gamefeel, try tabletop simulator or some other way of seeing if you like different playstyles.

Two thin coats. If you need 5-7 for a solid colour you're doing something wrong, probably too thin but also make sure it dries fully. Do a coat, move on to other models, come back to it after a few. Does nobody watch ol' Duncan any more?
>>
>>97484565
Don't not thin your paints, unless you're drybrushing. Unthinned paint is chunky, so if your problem is chunkyness you don't want to get lazy about the solution.
How much water to use when thinning is something you just pick up with experience.

Personally I don't layer anywhere near that much. If I want a bright colour over dark primer I won't do a shitload of layers of the bright paint, I'll do three ish layers but like dark->medium->light tone. But that part is personal taste.
Telling you to not get lazy about thinning is not personal taste, thin your paints.

5-7 is way more layers than you want for a basecoat. You're probably overthrowing if the marine only looks like that after 7 coats. If you were underthinning he'd look like a snowman. Thin your paint just to the point where it goes from sitting in a pile to beginning to lay flat. You shouldn't be able to stack blobs of it on top of itself, but it also shouldn't be trying to flow off your wet palette or trickle away.

Black magic is a matter of perspectives. It's simply believing in a set of principals and beliefs different to yours, and so it seems unknown to you and as such is frightening. I frequently use it to do good in the thread. A while back purpleanon even gave me permission to ask them for their thoughts on his colour scheme for the ghazghul he was working on and which of his two choices would bring him good luck going forward. Fairly often I'll ask them to help give a new poster/painter the patience to complete their first miniatures, or get through injuries/ailments when people mention it here. You've just been hateful for too long and said hurtful things to too many poster whom I like far too many times.

You while likely have a hard time getting vinyl to stick to anything, thats why you need to buy special camping tent repair kits if parts of the fly rip. There aren't many glues that work on it that are pleasant to work with. If you wanted to go full, Unga bunga retard mode marble bases you could get a big sheet of marble pattern printed at staples and then apply it to your bases via white glue and then just spray varnish the absolute fuck out of them, but also those wetwipe tutorials are pretty simple.

They are, but I was trying to find an example that normies would encounter vinyl glues and truly had no ideas outside that. The real shit is its never worth patching a tent if it could leave you stranded, cold and wet.

So i was gifted an old land raider and stripped the paint off, re primed the model, and am getting these weird textures from the paint. I’ve had success stripping smaller miniatures in iso alcohol before so i’m not really sure what the problem is. Is this maybe leftover paint or just a bad texture from priming? Would it be best to continue or should i strip it again?
>>
>>97485108
Adhesive backed tiles aren't being stuck to smooth polystyrene surfaces, they're being stuck to porous subfloor low density fiber board, porous subfloor plywood, or porous subfloor concrete if in a basement and its poured extremely flat. All of those are surfaces that grab the adhesive, because they are rough.

They seem fine on paper being T10 with an Invuln that can get buffed on the invuln for one round but holy moly it’s not good enough. You only ever take one as a situational buff (Stealth) and that’s it, or even not at all. There’s a few exceptions like EC I guess.

I assume the reason they’re bad past taking them once is because there’s just so many different models, types, and kitbashes of Daemok Prince that they don’t want to make such an easily acquired unit actually good in multiples. They’re essentially the paper tiger of centerpiece models.
>>
>>97485215
If you find battalions, and battleforce. Not that bad maybe 800.
If you buy no box, and already assembled, then half that. But ya you want to start with a box force of some kind, and buy cheap acrylic paint kits off Amazon. You can get 30-40 paints including metallic for like 36 dollars, and unless you are in it for painting it honestly won't matter.
People are commonly willing to play 1k point games, and stores will commonly have combat patrol events.
It's not cheap, but also compared to most TG hobbies the pieces have a very long shelf life.

https://superclean.com/locate-a-store/
Superclean is insanely nice. You can also resuse it 5/6 times and then strain it through a rag or paper towel and keep reusing it for about another 5/6 times. You can thin it with water 50:50 and it'll still work better than iso. Works fine with genuine forgeworld resin, can't speak for prints or recasts. It should be available at every Walmart automotive section, or autozone also great for soaking airbrushes if you strip all the rubber o rings out first. Wear gloves. It is aggressively basic and will rip all of the oils out of your skin/hair, and your skin will crack and crumble apart like dried mud after a few days. Wear gloves even while scrubbing and rinsing. Rinse your sink generously after.

Why use dettol when you can just get the active ingrediant, Isopropyl alcohol, on it's own.
it'll work much quicker and you don't have to deal with the trouble of keeping dettol away from water.
also metho which is pretty much just the same thing
>>
>>97485580
dettol is much safer to handle. speed literally doesn't matter to 99% of people stripping minis.
>>
>>97485592
what do you mean safer to handle?
Isoproply is used daily to clean skin and wounds, and in terms of speed it can take as little as 15mins for you to start scrubbing and rinsing off.
you also don't have to worry about mixing it with water like you do with dettol, which can cause it to gunk up your model and ruin it.

Hey anons can anyone ID the helmets whether they’re third party, stls or ForgeWorld, please?
Same goes for that officer and that weird device please?
I scored a bunch of cadian boxes from a thrift store. Maybe from a quitting hobbyist.
But I love gas masks.
>>
>>97485601
I'm starting to wonder if the iso bottle I got was fake or something because it really doesn't strip as well as some people claim.

Maybe, personally I just use methylated spirits, it's very close iso but a whole lot cheaper.
It is techniclly toxic, but only if you're an abo that drinks the stuff, it'll sting if it gets on any cut but it'll clean it out and want cause any lasting damage,

Now to find a good recaster of such stuff.

How common are forgeworld stuff at an lgs?
Do people just assume all forgeworld looking models are recasts these days? Is saying I got them off eBay a good way to dodge the accusations?

A long time ago I walked into a warhammer store (before I knew of a proper lgs) to see a Horus heresy red book fall off the table.
Hopefully it wasn’t damaged.
>>
>>97485642
No one would give a shit, you can't even buy them legally anymore. You haven't been able to for a long, long time.
>>

>How common are forgeworld stuff at an lgs?
That very dependant on lgs.
>Do people just assume all forgeworld looking models are recasts these days?
also dependant on the lgs, most places wouldn't care but for the real anal retards just say you found some dude seeling them on ebay of facebook marketplace.
Good rule of thumb is as long as it's painted they can't prove it's not legit.

my local redshirt is a middle aged serbian man that doesn't care about recast so long as you don't advertise it, and if some asked about any recasted parts/upgrades you just say you greenstuffed them and point them in the direction of the greenstuff.
Honestly a fantastic manager that was pretty much the exact oppisite of the redshirt meme.

I really like this cadian gas mask helmet.
So much that I’ve been looking for scans and even considering hiring a scanning service that will produce results that look close to original CAD files and hopefully free of mouldlines digitally included and won’t break my bank like a cadre of official forgeworld titans if one exists that has no fear of GW hit squads.

Assuming I do succeed at this will eyebrows be raised high if I show up with loads of cadians wearing these kinds of helmets and risk being kicked out?

Would saying eBay or secondhand reseller be enough to stave off accusations?
I can’t really decide between pic related or the kasrkin helmet to be honest. I like them both.
>>
>>97485688
I think you're just stressing yourself out mate.
Remeber that kaskrins exist and their is a cadian upgrade sprue with a similar helmet.
People aren't gonna take too much notice to them and will just assume it's from their, if they do ask you can just just enthusiastically say you found some OOP forge world bits on ebay and you got the lot.
don't overthink yourself out of a fun hobby project.
>>
>>97485712
Yeah you’re right I am stressing.

>>
>>97485616
I don't think isopropyl is worth using to strip, personally. I put some simple green in a ziplock bag with the model and stick that in an ultrasonic cleaner for 5-10 minutes and that's all I need. It's non-toxic and smells nice.

Like the other guy said you're worrying too much my man. "Oh yeah I just saw them on ebay haha looked like a good deal" will stave off any accusations, not that I would expect any in the first place. They're oop gw sculpts anyway even if you outright told people they're recast I honestly think most people wouldn't give a fuck. In my experience lgs owners tend to be fairly reasonably about third party stuff or proonts if they're just accessort bits, provided you too are reasonable about it and don't go advertise them, and you still buy normal shit from the store. Actual gw stores might be a bit more anal about that kind of stuff, but again, it's not like you're walking into the store with pin-up tyranid models or whatever.

Fair enough. I recall buying some stuff from the lgs and they asked my name so maybe it is a way to keep track of how many patrons bought stuff from the lgs.
So maybe I’ll be fine.

you're making good progress, but your coverage needs work. The cape is a good starting place to build good habits, gotta learn to wait and reapply so you have a consistent coat, it sounds tedious but as long as you've got other things to paint its no hassle.

So I know a buddy with a 3d printer. Its honestly pretty amazing especially the quality. Normally I have him print minis. My recent requests were normally affordable, neat looking Orks that were about $2 for a boy and $3.5 for a bigger guy like a warboss. Even had heads and power packs printed that were practically free
The biggest I asked him to print was a dnd Chimera the size of something like a Haruspex and it cost about $35
Now I asked him how much it would cost to print one of the big knights and hot damn by his estimated the price ballooned into $130 which is almost as much as a GW one
Anybody else have experience printing Knight sized models?

Even while simultaneously observing male-only conscription without protest across Europe and continuously being expected to women like precious little Princess waifs.

>whamyn are stronk and tuff and badass soldier gurrrlz yas kweens you can do anything

Is there any other group in society where their fictional depiction is so completely contrary to their actual nature?

I was in a combat role in Afghanistan (navy IA tour), and some of the women were like what you described. Some were absolutely the strong badass women warriors types too. Sure, the women were shittier at a higher rate than the men but in my experience teams are carried by the most effective individuals with a bunch of turds sitting around watching them work. If that person is a woman, then the whole unit suffers because you lost out on an "alpha" type person. There are absolutely men just as useless as the women you are describing and we still hand them guns and let them get blown up. Yes, there is a reason no woman has passed BUDS but they have absolutely served effectively in other combat roles.

Sounds to me less like suspension of disbelief and more hating women is a huge chunk of your personal moral framework so it triggers you.
