Who are /yourdudes/?

How did the people you've played against usually build their armies? Did they go for a strong build or focus on fluff/what looks cool or something in between? And how about (You) did you metafag when playing with other people or just whatever sounds fun/flavourful.
>>
>>97501505
My area is rather interesting. Because most of the people at my club do not build meta game lists. They regularly include shit that they think is cool but know is bad/mediocre.

On the flip side, they are pretty cutthroat in terms of the actual gameplay. Not in a malicious/cheating manner but they play to try and win fully within the bounds of the rules.

Yep, I've been mixing AoS with older kits for Chaos as I hate the lack of posability with the current midhammer warriors. They rank up terribly but look so much better imo

Been tempted to as someone getting back into the hobby, but the financial whiplash as someone who collected in the late 80s / 90s is taking a while to get over.
A lot of stuff that definitely doesn't fit for me but I'm not gonna pretend there aren't some nice sculpts in there.
>>
>>97501556
I posted some Lizardmen last thread using the new AoS models - I'm also using the Kroxigor and Chameleon Skinks from the line. The Saurus are kind of tricky to rank up but I really love the look of them.

I'm currently (still) working on the personal force of the Elector Count of Hochland.

It feels like a crawl since I usually only have time for one or two miniatures a day, but I hope I can finish my halberdiers this week. After that it's about 54 miniatures and two cannons left, but I think the archers and knights won't take as long as either's paint schemes won't be as difficult as my main regiment's of colourful landsknecht halbs. I'll just paint the knights' horses dark grey and give them silver armour, then it's just painting the shields, feathers and barding in green & red without any complicated patterns.

I was able to get my hands on extra knights and archers for relatively cheap, and with a chapter master proxy I got everything for a 750 point battle march second project already lined up (see >>97491699). I still gotta come up with the fluff for them, I'm thinking about something much more small-scale of a chapter of a 'homebrewed' knightly order controlling one fortified town, like Mergentheim for the Teutonic Order.

>>97501505
I've only did some research on the groups in my area playing, as I'm lucky to live in an area where I have access to about five LGS and a dedicated hobbyist club. It seems to be a primarily what >>97501529 says, and in my talks with folks it seems like for TOW they just want to go for whatever interests them as the premier fantasy setting for a lot of European hobbyists. That said, a lot are also deep into the 40k ecosystem, so there's probably going to be people that atleast memorise the rulers and optimal plays. There's also a tournament scene in a nearby student town, so that's probably filled with WAACs (although I'm planning on poaching one or two normal people there for casual games in the future).

Don't do it for yourself. For two years you have to deal with rambunctious pup that doesn't realize it's a giant, then for three years you deal with a larger than life dog that has more energy than you and then for two years you have to deal with elderly dog that catches every possible big dog disease (bloat. fucked up joints...) Irish Wolfhounds live for max seven years if you're lucky. Get yourself something healthier and more long-lived.

Thanks for the tip but yeah I don't think I was going to get this dog anyway. Sometimes the dream itself is sweeter. Even if it had zero health related downsides I wouldn't want to take a dog into a place where it wouldn't have the space and environment required for it to be truly happy. I'm also painfully aware that I'm not a dog person as in I couldn't put my energy into a high maintenance animal. I'll just continue admiring them from the wayside.

how are you so wrong?
it's incredibly similiar to 6th, I'd go as far as saying its 6.5

I played 6th(again) since 2015 when fantasy ended you fucking idiot.
Every faction except ogres was represented in our group when we went back to 6th. so I played against every army with my 5 armies.

I STILL play 6th on occasion in addition to much tow.
I advise you to actually play some 6th yourself, then play a tow game the day after. you will see exactly what I mean.

Heres a picture of a lustria map I made along with mightyempires tiles I repurposed for a beautiful 6th ed Lustria campaign for irrefutable proof, and a special little message just for you weighed down by guys from 2 of my 5 armies.
>>

>You can pre-measure distances for charging and arty - this changes the game MASSIVELY
>Strength and AP have been separated
>Rules bloat, every unit has a myriad of entries to remember
>it's just like 6th Ed bro
lmao, idiot
>>
>>97504327
>You can pre-measure distances for charging and arty - this changes the game MASSIVELY
This is the biggest change in TOW I think. And while I don't like it, it 100% has brought in more players, or at least hasn't scared them off. It's already a crunchy game and forcing newbies to deal with that as well frequently pushed people away back in the day.
>>
>>97503072
Because its obviously true. Few special rules, gutted damage profiles, WoC arent fun to play. Its 6e all over.
>>
>>97504423
Chaos was a lot more fun in 6th than it is in TOW. I miss my chaos lores, anon...
>>
>>97504455
>Chaos was a lot more fun in 6th than it is in TOW
Nah, in 6e it was both lame AND weak, now its just lame.
>>
>>97504327
>>You can pre-measure distances for charging and arty - this changes the game MASSIVELY
It doesent though.
>>
>>97504470
I'll concede the point that Chaos as an army was weak in 6th (barring notable exceptions like the tzeentch chariot spam list), but lame? Hell no! And certainly not in comparison to the abortion that is the chaos list in TOW. Disregard balance for a moment and actually go read the 6th edition HoC book. Utterly unique and flavourful magic items, three entire spell lores with effects that no other army could even attempt to replicate, marks that actually did things, gave you access to even better magic items & the three spell lores, and made your army play differently (to the point of being restrictive, but in a good way. If you wanted a level 4 sorcerer on the lore of Slaanesh, you had to earn it), the sheer amount of units you had access to... do I really need to continue? The book was very good despite the rules being weak.
>>
>>97504562
You had a lot of units but they were all functionally the same. They did the same things, filled the same roles, and werent taken for the same reasons.

You had some fun items (runeshield my beloved) but so did everyone else that edition. The marks were generally lame, the demonic gifts were lame. The only actual fun unit in that entire list was the hellcannon.
>>
>>97504455
Amen anon. Chaos in 6th was so fucking flavourful. Compare to TOW
>enemy has to reroll 6s or some shit lol wooooowwwww
>>
>>97504577
>a lot of units but they were functionally all the same [...] weren't taken for the same reasons
As opposed to TOW, where everything that isn't a forsaken, a marauder horseman, a chosen knight, a gigantic chaos spawn, a dragon ogre shartak, or a character is worthless? Come on, anon. I also completely reject your premise regarding 6th having a lot of units doing the same things and filling the same roles. Daemonic units didn't fill the same purpose as mortals and neither did beasts. Sure, bloodletters were just worse chaos warriors (which is an impressive feat in its own right), but daemonettes, plaguebearers, and horrors were not comparable to any mortal or beast unit. Horrors could cast unique spells, plaguebearers could spit and were harder to hit in close combat, daemonettes were fast, and these are just the most basic of daemons.
>marks were generally lame
Did we read the same book? Sure, the mark of Nurgle sucked for units, but it was filthy on characters and gave you access to a very powerful spell lore. The mark of Khorne was objectively superior to how it is in TOW, the mark of Tzeentch was amazing and was by far the best iteration of the concept of Tzeentch as an army WHFB has ever had and any opinion to the contrary is just wrong and gay, and the mark of Slaanesh gave you access to what might be the most powerful spell lore in the game as well as some busted magic items. Marks also completely changed how you wrote your list, which is way better than how marks have worked since 7th.
>daemonic gifts
Fair, daemon princes got shafted. I'd argue they're in an even worse state in TOW in terms of fun-levels (namely because GW is satan and decided DPs couldn't take chaotic traits), but competitive players seem to be disproving that statement at the moment.
>hellcannon
That thing was completely useless!

Bold claim anon, well if you played 6th for so long and religiously you'd surely have your armybooks and BRB still, with the erratas and annual changes hand pasted inside right?

If you'd like to start from the top and genuinely discuss this, post yours with stamp - There is no way you won't have an amended core book. .We can then talk like human beings on the internet. Probably the first in many moons.

To make it fairer. I'll even post mine for you. Along with my 8e stuff which I also played, and came to the conclusion that tow is not very much like at all(and thank fucking god for that)
>>
>>97504819
>where everything that isn't a forsaken, a marauder horseman, a chosen knight, a gigantic chaos spawn, a dragon ogre shartak, or a character is worthless?
Youre forgetting regular knights and the warpfire dragon.

>Daemonic units didn't fill the same purpose as mortals and neither did beasts
But they DID. It was just different skins for the same expensive elite melee infantry (with the exception of horrors)

>the mark of Tzeentch was amazing and was by far the best iteration of the concept of Tzeentch as an army WHFB has
The mark of tzeench encouraged the worst sort of play. MSU power dice batteries for your golden eye dragon lord is just not very fun. I should know, its what I played.

>That thing was completely useless!
It was great! Sure, maybe a bit too pricy, but it fired big explosive shots and had a hilarious panic AOE. It was a unit that had a very unique playstyle and very high rewards if used correctly. Loved it.
>>
>>97504853
yeah my 2 chaos buddies who play tow still did that exact tzeentch bullshit, throw in a couple of screamers of tzeentch(obscenely good) and you had a real shitlord of a list to conquer.

I recall printing the 6 pages required from the annual to field my steamtank for the first time and the screams of impotent rage though against it. Good era.

That and hellblasters as ever.

Totally agree on the hellcannon being awesome to play against at least, that was too fun for this earth. Any idea if renegade fan rules touched it up?
>>
>>97504904

yeah I think the force panic test items should explicitly force BAD panic, ie actual flee.

Warpfire thrower copped it the same, along with losing a pip of strength, -1 ap and d3 wounds.
Clearly someone got toasted too hard. Shame as its secretly my favourite of the weapon teams.
>>
>>97504963
Yea.

Personally? Heres what I would do to fix hellcannons:
Bring back the LD test at start of turn (maybe as a stupidity check, since we dont like special charts now).
Hellcannons get the doom diver "adjust D6 in any direction" rule (something something demon magic bolts). The actual damage on the projectile is fine.
Panic test at -1, causes BAD panic as opposed to the "fall back in good order kind".

Also its now Ap-2 in close combat.
>>
>>97504980
yeah that'd do it.

quick question to anons: have there been ally charts released this tow for team games?
I'll probably just use the old 6e chart in a 2v2 coming up if not but figured Id ask
>>
Managed to snatch start collecting tzeentch for cheapo, figured it would be perfect for allied detachment for woc. Would you guys say it's better to put herald on the chariot and exalted flamer on footsies, or should I assemble a chariot and look for a disc to put herald on somewhere?
>>
>>97505001
>have there been ally charts released this tow for team games?
There have not. Each army states what factions it can take as allies in the army list iirc.
>>
>>97504831

>>
>>97504980
Other changes I would make to WoC:
Chaos dragons are exclusive to chaos lords.
Chaos dragons cannot be taken in heralds of darkness or wolves of the sea.

Demonic mounts are barded and have countercharge.
Ensorcelled weapons are -1AP and magical attacks to all nonmagical weapons.
Mark of Nurgle on the great chaos spawn is either +55pts (instead of its current cost) or -1 to be hit in melee, rather than regeneration.
>>
>>97505016
ahh thanks anon, well fuck that restriction, Im teaming up with my skaven along with some tk ( pals moving back next month) against 2 chaos forces. one nurgle and one tzeentch.

should be fun. shame I can't sneak in the fellblade at either 750 battlemarch or 1k*as Im using my newly painted stormvermin.
>>
>>97505052
Oh, I meant "in the same list".

You can take allies in your army. You can ally with other players however you want.
>>
>>97505055
I see. yeah it would be fun to get the silly alliance matrix for multiplayer games. Maybe it was in the back of the 8th brb, will have to look.(yeah it was)

I'll ask the lads on the day how they want to play it honestly.

>>
>>97503370
The AoS warriors are great, though I'd prefer something a bit in-between; "action" poses are fine for the front rank, but I'd like the kit better if there were half as many of those and the numbers were made up with more "advancing menacingly" ones for rear ranks. If I could find scans or a cheap recaster who did them so I wouldn't feel like a retard for discarding "excess" action posers I'd probably replace my old marching blocks.
>>
>>97504831
NTA, but you do get you just conceded, right? First to resort to adhom when given an opportunity to argue in good faith is just admitting they can't do so. Man I bet you thought this was a total mic drop, right? Sitting there smirking about how clever you are, when in reality everyone who sees this just thinks "lol what a faggit".
>>
>>97505731
>more "advancing menacingly" ones
There's a good handful like that. My main problem is the big sweeping capes on every dude, if it weren't for that they'd be so much easier to rank up. Tempted to try carve some of them down but worried it'd look like I just hacked at them with a knife (and they are decently thick plastic so would take some work). I also worry about how many duplicate dudes I'll end up with, I believe there has to be some middle ground between monopose and the old multipart, just wish they'd trial different things. Like surely you could just have some universal joint at the waist eith the rest being monopose for dramatic arm and leg posing, but at least that'd allow you to swap lower and top halves for much greater overall body variety.

I am, I don’t have a TOW army yet. I am waiting for Kislev to avoid growing the pile by starting another army to tide me over.
>>
>>97506592
Can you track down some stuff from the old 6e kislev models?
Or stls of total war guys I guess.

I believe the cavalry were pretty cool- a friend of mine loved using them.

Or I guess find some terrain that suits em and start on that.
>>97506248
It’s wild isn’t it.
>>
>>97506615
I’ve looked on eBay and the models are ridiculously expensive. I’ll just wait and continue painting my MESBG army for now. When Kislev releases I am going full paypig, dice, books, at least one of everything. But until then my wallet stays closed.
>>
>>97506631
>I am going full paypig,
you don't even know what the models will look like, maybe see if you like them first? its pathetic really
>>
>>97506645
Well obviously if I don’t like what they reveal I won’t buy it. That’s implicit. But from what they’ve released so far for TOW I think I’ll be very happy.
>>

>But from what they’ve released so far for TOW I think I’ll be very happy.
Grim. Well whatever, I got my metal chaos warriors, just wish I could find the older metal demons now, but gw will likely neglect that even further now that they’ve shifted their audience.

I received my order of knights and archers for my knightly order side project much earlier than I expected. I thought I had an idea for said knightly order using black and white, but I'm wondering how much fun that's going to be on the table down the line and not just a waste of plastics if they end up looking like the Reiksguard minus the red.

Do any anons here have fun suggestions or ideas I could maybe explore for these knights? Be it a religious order or a secular order, or just when/where/why they were founded. I'm a little stuck on what I could do.

The only other idea I've come up with besides the white-black knock-off Teutonics is perhaps making an order for Taal (& Rhya). There are only two orders of them in the fluff, one of which are nothing more than a group of archers with delusions of aristocratic grandeur, and the others are demigryph riders in the McDonalds colours. I could probably manage to paint an oak on the banners.

I'm starting with the archers for my main army, I'll probably paint half of them in the knightly order colours as the secondary army will also have a bunch of shooters.
>>
>>97506946
I can't chime in, in terms of your lore/worldbuilding, but you can always adjust that yourself.

I personally wouldn't do white/black as it's a very drab scheme. Black is also quite difficult to make look good. I'd try to go with more striking colors, I assume the armor of your knights won't go fully high fantasy colored metallics, so the non armored color sections should be vibrant imo to avoid having the model kind of just be dark at a distance. Look up some good color theory color combos and I am sure you will find something that you think will look great and fits in with the story /yourdudes/ are trying to tell.

I do a yearly escalating narrative campaign with a group of friends.

>Last year's dudes
Ran a Tomb Kings army centered around a husband and wife attempting to reclaim stolen family heirlooms. The twist being that they couldn't agree on who stole from them so they'd constantly bicker about.
The husband thought Bretonnians took their heirlooms, whereas the wife blames vampires. Each campaign turn, I'd flip a coin to determine who won their current argument, moving in the winners preferred direction and building my lists around the winners preferences (traditional boney boys and chariots for the husband, constructs for the wife).

>This year's dudes
Beastmen warherd sworn to Slaanesh. They primarily roam around Tilea seeking their favoured targets of loaded merchant caravans and vineyards. Caravans are simply looted for their alcohol, meat, and silks, but vineyards (or villages with distilleries) are isolated and bled dry before being destroyed.
Internally, the herd is divided due to an ongoing three-way power struggle. One faction is led by an overly proud bestigore that refuses to fight anything he sees as beneath him. Another is led by an gluttonous ungor who has risen above his station by earning Slaanesh's favour through his appetite. And the final one is led by a female bray-shaman that advocates for a "subtler" touch and conducts dark rituals to breed better gors and increase mutated births amongst normal humans.

Do ogres function decently at low point games (500-1500)?
>>
>>97508025
thats like asking if knights work in combat patrol.
>>
>>97507542
Y'know historical games exist, right?
>>
>>97508028
Closer analog would be termies only. Though ogres don't have good armour saves or weapon skill so it seems even more mild than that.
>>
>>97508025
In terms of "are they a fun and balanced faction" or "are they good"? Because I suspect those have different answers.

At very low pts ogres are probably insane, because theyre faster than infantry and have high would retention.

1500pts is barely worth calling low, given 2000 is the default ive seen.

Considering them for an escalation league. If I run them guess the answer is to go wide on sabretusks and gnoblars at 500 and 750.
>>
>>97508149
Sabretusks were insane in 8e so im guessing theyre probably still good. No idea about gnoblar.

But yea, ogre MSU should work fine at smaller pts levels because high damage retention is big in low damage formats.
>>
>>97508043
They do have high retention, but low total wounds. Of all the armies I've played, they had the most unit wipes from being chased down. It's strange to say, because on paper Bulls look pretty decent, but they really hinder the army unless you go super huge (like 5-6 wide 2-3 deep). But at that point its such an enormous point cost you've lost a lot of utility. I found 2 units of min size bulls and treat them like speed bumps was the best use for them. Ogre characters are all really good though, with a particular shout out to Hunters.
>>97508149
>>97508171
Sabretusks are amazing but gnoblars are difficult to use. Or at least the gnoblars were in 8th, i've not seen anyone run them in TOW yet so hard to say.

>Beastmen warherd sworn to Slaanesh.
Mine are over in Bretonnia area north of Arden. They're beastwomen gifted from Slaanesh though, and otherwise unaffiliated with the gods. They revel in terrorism (bleeding rose - Wild herd), torture/suffering (not used yet - blood greed), and punishment (Black thorn - BBH) which is why Slaanesh gifted them to the corrupted wood elf sorceress. I'm doing the gooner models, so I'm sure people have seen them. Suppose I ain't posted the info lately though.

The possible drab look was also a concern for me, yeah. I'm using vallejo paints for the armour, which can have a glittery effect (especially the silver paint), so I might actually go for something a little more toned down as to not overly clash. I've been thinking of either olive green, or something close to lincoln green.

>>97507213
That banner looks great, but I don't feel like it fits the aesthetic for Cathay. If I ever worked on a Cathayan army I'd either attempt the five colour metal symbolism the Chinese historically used a lot in their banners (see the Jurchen Jin Dynasty's purported banner), or use buddhist or taoist imagery like in picrel.

>>97507201
I did consider them for a while, but I think I want to make my own homebrew order. I like Ulric, but the knightly order aesthetic for him looks horrible. If I want to get wild haired vikings I'd look for proxies for WoC.

I really don't like the dragon primarchs or paying premium for GW miniatures though, so I'm not touching Cathay with a ten foot pole unless I can get a box for very cheap. I'd make them ruled by an ogre "dynasty" or something.

Can someone please explain to me (I am new to tue game) if the characters for High elf realms can be used in TOW. I see lots of them, but there are no rules in the core.book or journal. Ahould they just be used as generic charatcters?
>>
>>97510588
Are you trying to ask about named characters from previous editions, such as Teclis, Tyrion, etc.? They don't currently have rules, as you've already noticed, so yeah, just run them as generic characters.
>>
>>97510200
kek
>>
>>97510600
Yep, that's it. Thanks. One more question. If I want a storm weaver, what mini should I use? I saw Caladris model which I like a lot. Could it work?
>>
>>97510609
The model you like is always* the right model to use.

And yea, basically any elf mage can work for a storm-weaver.
>>
>>97510609
Storm weavers are essentially just alternate wizards, you could use any high elf mage model to represent them. Warhammer Fantasy and TOW aren't like 40k or AoS, the rules don't specify that you have to use a single exact model to represent a given unit. You can use whatever you think works best, provided you like it and you paint it up nice. So... go digging through the old catalogues and find a high elf model you think would look good as a storm weaver! Or you could just get one of the mage models GW is selling right now. It's really up to you at the end of the day.
>>
>>97510650
I'll add to this by saying unless you intend to play in GW tournaments, you don't even need to pick from their models. You find an elf mage from dnd minis or some 3d print you like, so long as it's the right scale, fly at it man.
