Toying with faction rules for a Wolf Empire vs Free Worlds League set of games in a few weeksFree Worlds League Regulars: Units picked from Free Worlds League and Inner Sphere General MUL. >Assault Waves: The FWL forces are divided into two waves - the first wave must fit in the mech or vehicle bays of a Leopard DropShip, consisting of up to four mechs or vehicles. The second wave may consist of any other unit combination, but is transported as cargo instead of combat ready, and arrives on the board during the movement phase of turn 4. Only one unit per lance may have any clan technology.>Regular Standouts: FWL Regular forces may be given Special Pilot Abilities from the playtest doc (will be linked)Wolf's Dragoons Zeta Battalion: Units picked from the Mercenary General and Wolf's Dragoons MUL>Assault Force: No unit in a Zeta Battalion force may be lighter than 80 tons.>Retreat, Hell!: Zeta Battalion forces are not subject to Forced Withdrawal. If they move at all, they must end their movement closer to at least one enemy unit than they started.Wolf Empire: Units picked from the Wolf Empire and Inner Sphere General MUL.>Sibkos and Solahma: Only one unit in each Wolf Empire star may have its skills improved higher than piloting 5, gunnery 4. Only two units in each Wolf Empire star may include any Clan technology.>The Wolf's Den: Wolf Empire forces fight on the defensive, and may set up up to two of their units using the Hidden Unit rules, anywhere closer to their home edge than their opponent's.Clan Protectorate: Units picked from the Clan Protectorate and Clan Sea Fox MUL>Trueborn and Veterans: Units must have their skills upgraded to piloting 4, gunnery 3, and must pay BV to do so.>Have they picked a side yet?: With their enemies unsure of the Protectorate forces' ultimate allegiance, tense maneuvers happen before shots are fired. During the first turn, neither player may make attacks unless the Protectorate player makes one.Any thoughts?
The urge to buy a bunch of 6mm modern/cold war engineering vehicles is here. I have plenty of support vehicles for objectives, and yet...
>>97508772Anon western culture is descended from Europe, almost all of Europe is in some way Germanic, be it culturally or genetically. The Scandinavians are Germanic, the Russias get their name Rus from a Scandinavian tribe that integrated themselves with the ruling class a thousand years ago so heavily that the entire people took their name from them. The Spanish royal family is ethnically German, the Celtic culture originated in he ethnic ancestors of the modern Germans in the exact locations the modern Germans still inhabit, almost all of western/central Europe was ruled over by the Germans in the Holy Roman Empire, and as mentioned before, the french and english are descended directly from German tribes. It is inarguable fact that western culture is German/Germanic in origin.
>>97510368Don't be silly, Germans were made up by the British to keep the people distracted once they caught on about "France"
>>97510386You sure as hell can't trace it back to the population who are north african ever since they were conquered and bred away by the north africans during the crusades. You can't get history from wikipedia.

>>97510487GHQ micro armor. Picrel. French infantry because they look generic, Deuce bulldozers for engineering work, same with the recovery vehicle, Buratinos will make good missile carriers, choppers to expand my options there. These are multiples per pack, so way cheaper than IWM.
>>97510177*wit im
>>97510604Had a look myself. Some of the WW2 stuff also looks like it could be used as its generic enough. Wonder how open it is to kitbashing?
>>97510809Most of the minis are two pieces or so of pewter, so not all that many options. I'd recommend the Cold War stuff, it tends to read as generic while WW2 stuff is immediately recognizable to wargamers.
We need more Fat Bastards in the setting. Specifically the kind that are vile and putrid on the outside but have a heart of gold on the inside. The Shrek, if you would.
>>97510926Shame. I was thinking about whether or not one of the WW2 armored cars could be kitbashed into a Thor or Demon but probably not a good idea.>>97510961Big guys with big hearts?

For a larger formation like a battalion, what sort of bases should I have covered? Currently I'm thinking a recon company, cavalry company, assault company, and a fire support company. Does this seem like it covers all the bases?
>>97511040They usually also have a dedicated command lance attached making them about 40 units.
>>97511023It's unfortunate that the balance in MW5 Clans is so fucked because you actually can roll a Bane with like 10 LRM-15s , but lasers are the only weapons that actually do damage in that game
Considering the technology of a world could fluctuate from 21st century to 32nd, whose to say you couldn't use T-55 models as a local militia tank that uses a AC-5?

>>97511167The only thing remotely Spanish about it is the name, serious historians can not agree on any single origin for the WESTERN guitar and agree that the Spaniard instruments contributed just as much as the Lute.My assertion that it is here because of it's immediate German traditional origin is more evidenced, North America was not colonized by Spain.
>>97511199>North America was not colonized by Spain.NTA, but as someone whose family has been in Texas since it was Tejas, pretty much everything Rocky Mountains West was Spanish. Plus everything down to the old Portuguese line. Not to mention the Caribbean. English were just east of the Appalachians until later on. There were a lot of German immigrants later, though. Plus a lot more after Prussia fell.I do agree that the guitar is basically a lute evolution, just like the piano is a hammerharp in the tradition of the harpsichord. Now the Battletech question. Have we ever had any weird music nerds other than Rhonda Snord in Battletech?
>>97511253>Thing is, the Lute isn't a "Germanic' invention either...Yes, it's so very very Greek.
>>97511233maybe west of the rockies down by the equator, things within reach of mexico, but there isn't anything spanish about the west side of the rockies in canada or in the northwestern states. And no, authors writing for scifi with a lick of sense steer clear of music precisely because musical trends are next to impossible to predict, you either insert contemporary stuff like in that case, which rings false, or you attempt to invent a name and description for some genre of the future that doesnt exist, which usually comes out sounding very silly.Either way it is immersion breaking. The best way to handle it is in vague cultural references like an elder complaining that the music kids listen to has no soul compared to the music of their own generation, a complaint as old as time itself.
All this autism over a throwaway sentence, lol.
>>97511253>>97511257Regardless, the origin of western (north american) guitar tradition and country music itself is the recent (in centuries) German guitar and folk musical traditions.
>>97511285The Irish of the Deep South definitely have a huge influence. Them plus French Cajuns and Mariachi are the most Western guitar influence IMO. The Germans are about Czech level.

Anyone here play Dark Age factions? I wanna do a small Dragon's Fury force, they're kinda cool.
Battletech's lore has a lot of ugly bastards.

>>97511579Late Dark Age is based and has some pretty great stories. >>97511585>lot of ugly bastards. That's what makes Battletech such a realistic setting.
>>97511579You mean Dark Age specific factions? In the only explicitly dark age game I've played, I used my Marik Militia as Marik Protectors, but they're a direct continuation, so it's only technically a "new" faction.

>>97511610>>97511609>>97511607The factions I wanna paint up as part of a little "Dark Age Painting Project" are the Stormhammers and the Dragon's Fury but I also kinda want to make a small force for Republic Remnant. All of them are pretty neat. Probably just a lance or 2 each, nothing crazy.
Are there any commands (mostly looking for mercs, but house or clan might work) that have porcine based unit insignia?Talking pigs, boars, or even pig style orcs. kind of disappointed there’s three snake clans, two canine clans, etc, but no boar clan. Boars can be really aggressive, and I think they’d adapt well to the worlds of the Kerensky cluster.
I don't know how to calculate battle values
>>97511585In all fairness, that's only because Battletech has the most consistently terrible artwork of any game ever published. You don't see other games where artists are continually totally unable to draw a single attractive person.
>>97511643Nobody does, the formula is stupidly complex. CGL can't even consistently follow it. Just get a Mech design program and let the computer do it
>>97511638>a small force for Republic Remnant. Why would you want to make a post-3135 force when all the others are 3131?
>>97511653My mate has a load of Ilclan era/late Dark Age era Jade Falcons.
>>97511653Nta but the Dragon's Fury wasn't fully disbanded/destroyed until around 3142 or 3141 while the Rep Remnant existed from 3134-ish onwards. Plenty of time for them to fight or interact or whatever.

>>97511940Republic scouts have found evidence of Obeedah and the continued existence of the Manei Domini. To stop the rest of the RotS from finding out, the AI Aegaeon hacks the HPG network of the world those scouts are on so the Manei Domini can invade and destroy all traces of their existence before word gets out. I'm still working on the WoB forces I'll be using in it (no Militia, only Domini mechs and vehicles/battle armour so I need to add some to my army) while my buddy is finishing up his Republic force so it's still a while off. Gives me time to flesh out the missions though so it's no biggie.

>>97511988Sounds cool. Are you the guy who did the MHegemony and WoB games a few days back? They looked fun.If I was ever going to Word of Blake/Blakists vs the Republic I'd personally go with the Blessed Order. Their story is one of my favourite parts of the Dark Age.
>>97512141>Are you the guy who did the MHegemony and WoB games a few days back? They looked fun.I am! They were the most fun I've had in ages. I'm thinking this new campaign is going to be focused on a number of diversionary attacks against bases and such by the Domini to destabilise and scatter the Republic forces on world before ending with a massive attack on the Republic's HQ by an elite Domini force. >I'd personally go with the Blessed Order. Their story is one of my favourite parts of the Dark Age.Their storyline is fantastic :) plus we got a new pseudo-Celestial mech thanks to them!
>>97511988>>97512182That's the best kind of ideas, the ones that are half supported by the lore but haven't been spelled out directly. We know from Ghosts of Obeedah that the Manei Domini there have done some black ops on "uncharted worlds". Republic Spec ops finding that they have bitten more than they could chew would be hilarious.>>97512141The Blessed Order was such a wasted opportunity. But again, tired of writing Robes, needed to go, more space for Clans to do Clan things....
>>97512256>Republic Spec ops finding that they have bitten more than they could chew would be hilarious. That's the whole idea I want to go for. Kind of like "Yeah, we found some evidence of a Neo-Blakist group on some backwater world, send it off to the Knights. They'll handle-OH MY GOD IT'S RAINING CYBORGS!" Probably going to have rules in the first few missions to reflect the RotS forces being entirely unprepared for the invasion and unable to deploy the bulk of their units or never having initiative or something then have them rally and start really fighting back as the campaign progresses. One thing I want to include is the idea of Mot's servants leaving no evidence behind, so when the pilot is killed or mech destroyed, explosives within the machine detonate, erasing the proof of their presence and damaging anything nearby.
>>97512256>The Blessed Order was such a wasted opportunity.I feel like they did everything they needed to and ended at a good point in the story. Didn't overstay their welcome and get shit and didn't just pop up and vanish again. I would've liked more but what we got was good so I'm happy enough.
>>97511700I'm going to try that. I got a couple lance packs for Christmas and wanted to do something new. Thought about experimenting with paint schemes that reflect some of the features of pigs/boars.>>97511719Pigs don't count>>97512170lol pig elves
>>97512030Yeah - I've uninstalled and reinstalled as well, still nothing working.
Stage 3 of the camouflage. For this lance I'm going with the Greenhaven Gestapo... sort of.post Amaris the only named member not listed as dead is Alexis "Succubus" Adley and the art showing the Rampage also shows a Talos as belonging to the GG.So Alexis Adley inherited the company pregant with Legos's child, changed her name to Alexis Hadley (A.H. ;]) and renamed the company Hadley's Hussars (H.H. ;]) which has survived through to the Clan Invasion remaining in the command of the Hadley line being Pirate and Mercenary as need and want dictate.
>>97512451
Give me some less know tech available around 3054 (you can bend it a little with "prototype" stuff) for ideas on what to give to my players as rewards. They already got >two MPLs>hidden blade>some clan tech lasers and a SRM-6 streakBut I'm looking for something more exotic, maybe something that's not a weapon. And they're going to get an XL engine to either sell or install into one of their mechs (three of them have 5/8 55 tonners so they can talk it out), ten tons of ferro fibrus and a map to where they can find and salvage an Union over the course of the adventure.
Anyone know of someone selling 3d prints or something of the Spectral LAM Series (Pwwka, Yurei, Waneta)? I don't want them bad enough to assemble a mini made of so many separate metal parts lol
>>97512539I'm an open National Socialist, if your aim is to insult me, you're going to have to try a lot harder than that.

>>97512661There's 2 I know of. Also, if you look at how an ASF cockpit is designed, the chair rotates in the cockpit for best g-force application just like in an LAM to different modes, so you really don't have to reinvent the wheel.>Can't find my image of THE CHAIRFUCK
>>97513723Because sometimes you want to be on the ground and the airmech mode is pretty shit in those cases. Most of them are barely 2/3 walk/run.
Why is CGL so terrible at keeping any physical books in stock for any amount of time? Allegedly they are doing one more reprint of Total Warfare and other core rule books before the new rules get published (at least that’s what was said in a random interview last September, who knows?) but it is really fucking crazy that the CORE rule book is basically impossible to find irl and has been for at least a year, let alone random sourcebooks and whatnot that get one printing 15 years ago then never again.
>>97513859Buddy, one and done printing is how it has been since the 80's. That you get reprints of even the major rulebooks is an upgrade from the FASA days. This is also why you buy shit when it is new if you want it for your library. The PoD stuff you can get is super lucky.>Remembers hunting AToW Companion for 2 years for a decent price.
>>97513868>This is also why you buy shit when it is new if you want it for your libraryWith how littered with errors they are this does not apply to any CGL products.

>>97513868For what it's worth, TROs didn't go completely extinct until AGOAC, but I'm still kicking myself for not buying 3150 in print because I was not sure if I was going to be moving. I didn't expect the entire chronological trend of TROs to get dumped after 30 years of stability. What's more, CGL also more or less abandoned POD the moment they announced all their sourcebooks would be printed hardcover. I don't know what the going price is for a second hand copy of TRO3150 is these days, but I think I saw a booster box of Commanders Edition CCG going for 2000 USD the other day so I'm not betting I'll be able to do better than taking a PDF to a print shop.
>>97513936If it makes you feel any better, the copy of TRO 3150 I got was at a good price but had to be imported from some Brit fuckstick stationed in Gibraltar. It was still like $80. I also got a bretty good Battletech CCG collection a few years ago when my buddies were trying to get me into the Babylon 5 and Star Wars CCG's from a couple decades ago. What really fucking floors me is DA minis these days. I remember when you paid $1 a mech and nothing for the scrubs and indies. Now, they want proper CGL plastic prices. Good thing I already got a few thousand of them. Yet, you can still get good old metal for less than $7 a pop. I remember paying $85 in fucking 2004 dollars back when for a Mad II. Now I got 3 in this last lot back in January for fucking chump change.
>>97513936What irks me about the POD thing is that it was brought up in a conversation I was a part of last year and a couple indie devs defended CGL and their decision to not do POD. I'd understand if it was some dude trying to get his game printed but a company like CGL shouldn't be having any problems with it.
>>97513982Someone would have to do the layout work for the POD version, and CGL hates putting any effort into books.

>>97511711I had trouble with it for years, from the moment that the team decided to not use off-the-shelf auto-download Java and instead use some specialty dev pack.I eventually got it to run, but holy shit it was an uphill battle. You don't just need to uninstall Java, you need to eradicate it, like full on going into command prompts and making sure there's no vestiges of Java on your machine whatsoever before you try to install it.If not, depending on how you plan to use MM, the team keeps a good library of old versions of Megamek. If you go back far enough you'll be able to get stable versions that still run on bog standard Java, and unless you plan on ilclanning they still manage to check most of the boxes.Hell, they've got versions that go back to BMR rules before Total Warfare.
So LRMs are unguided missiles right?
>>97514212They're self-guided in a manner that's utterly unaffected by ECM. I don't think they actually lock on to the target so much as automatically correct themselves for weather and drift. Narc and semi-guided LRMs actually lock on, but they're chasing the lock generated by other equipment on the battlefield, not locking on themselves.
>>97514242It's probably an entirely isolated system that uses spacial recognition to tell where it's target is and where it isn't
>>97514250I just got the funny image of each LRM being like the old pigeon guided bombs.
>>97514250I would think they do at least have some kind of proximity sensor since they never accidentally impact other missiles from the same volley.

>>97514242>They're self-guided in a manner that's utterly unaffected by ECMSo they're TAG-guided?
>>97514286There are semi-guided LRMs which interact with TAG, and there are dead-fire missiles which have more explosives at the expense of range. See if you can figure out what default LRMs are like from these two pieces of information.
>>97514242I don't think any missiles CAN lock on by themselves, the ECM of the setting wouldn't allow it.

The failure of BattleTech to transition to mainstream recognition, as WH40K, Cyberpunk and even Fallout have, will ensure this franchise remains a niche perversion with a rapidly againg and shrinking fanbase despite its brief period of prominence in the 90s and early 2000s

How does TAG work? Logically it should be countered by ECM so how does it get around that.
>>97514471As I understand it, it's a laser designator.
>>97514483Right but laser designators can be jammed and the description for how it gets around that jamming doesn't make a ton of sense.
>>97514471It does get countered by ECM, you just have to engulf the unit emitting it.
If I'm using Protomechs with my Word of Blake (I love the whole "interring a wounded Domini within a Protomech" thing they did on Necromo) should I bring them in units of six due to how the WoB deploy their forces? I hadn't even thought about this until a mate brought it up the other day.
>>97514679Everything else is deployed in sixes, I don't see why protomechs would be any different. A level I also being equivalent to a clan point, and a clan point being five protomechs, six WoB/comstar protomechs would be a level I.
>>97514704Yeah I agree. Think that makes sense.
Making a lore-accurate Level 1 for the 52nd Shadow Division made up of Battle Armour.I'm thinking 1 Shedu, 1 Nephilim, 2 Tengu and 2 Seirim in Bolla Stealth Tanks. It's a fluffy Level 1 for the Manei Domini to use. Plus it's a mix of everything so it'll hopefully be useful on the table. Anything I should add, anons?
>>97514242>>97514242So they're... INS or PLOS? You hold for a few seconds while it is fed your mechs movements and gets an idea of the target's and then launches where it thinks the target will be?
>>97514764That would make sense why there's a cluster table for missiles, assuming the launch is staggered like most multiple missile launchers are to avoid interference, either the missiles are being updated right up until the millisecond they leave the tube, so the last one has more up to date information than the first, or the updating stops and the first missile has the best information and all subsequent ones are increasingly out of date. I haven't actually read the lore on Artemis IV, but it being a 1 ton heavier mount on the missile itself could represent either a better data collection system, or some sort of one way data link that allows for limited midcourse correction, hence the cluster bonus.
hey guys, sorry to bother but couldn't find a thread on other boards for this questionare any of the mw5 mercs DLCs worth it outside of the clanner one?
>>97514868You'll need all of them in order to run mods which is the only way to make MW5 Mercs actually playable. Just use creamapi or grab them on sale.
>>97514212My best guess is that they paint an area of effect and lob the missiles in a way that they will all land inside it. Faster mechs obviously have a better chance of being off from that target zone by the time the missiles actually get there. Things like TAG and NARC provide real time updates on the target location and Artemis IV tightens the targeting zone to allow for better patterning. Nothing in the tabletop game indicates that the missiles actually track their targets without the assistance of outside guidance systems. In every videogame though they work more like current heat seeking missiles. You lock on, fire a volley and provided there isn't interfering terrain they are going to hit whether the target is moving or not. This is why even though LRMs are not exceptionally powerful against fast targets on the tabletop they absolutely rape anything relying on speed to survive in every videogame iteration. Something with a 5+ TMM on the long range band of a LRM launcher has a pretty good chance of completely avoiding the hit but good fucking luck doing anything similar in MWO.
>>97515031This guy is 100% right. I just wanted to add that the OG Battledroids version was said to be dumb missiles fired basically with iron sights due to the guidance tech being lost, but they changed that later on with being able to spot for indirect fire and so on.
is mechwarrior 5 canon?
>>97514733Nah, it's perfect. You just need to decide the weapons you're carrying on the Bollas. Otherwise, I'd just say to remember that even the MD units had a bunch of regular shit mixed in. >>97515066All video games are apocryphal even if they closely follow actual events.
>>97515066Vidya is about as canon as the match between Davion and Steiner schoolgirls.
>>97515066Video game stuff only becomes canon when it's replicated in an actual book, and only the version of it that's actually in the book. The canon Argo is much less impressive than the vidya Argo.
>>97515066The story of the game is not, but the unit itself and characters are. They are depicted in 'The Mercenary Life anthology'.
>>97515151new fetish unlocked.
>>97515066The videogames explicitly aren't canon, but sometimes there's a canon compliant book for the TT based on the vidya in question that's made canon. For example HBS' Battletech 2018 vidya is noncanon. But the House Arano book, which vaguely follows the plot of the game, is canon.
>>97515226House Arano is not canon and no amount of fan fiction will ever disprove this.
>>97515415There's multiple completely different ways to counter a laser designator system and a basic google search would be able to explain this to you.

>>97517534Stealth armor is that you?
>>97517534I should get some mimetic battle armor printed in clear resin and leave them unpainted. A shame the only widely available ones to mercs are Cappie designs
>>97517811most clear resins yellow badly, so not great for that usage.I did have a bottle of resin once labeled as "high clear" that was meant to be very resistant to yellowing, and from what I saw of sun curing the prints from it that held up, though they got painted and I had no long term testing on them, my usual prints will yellow inside of a day with an hour of sun curing. That being said the bottle of high clear required me to really increase my exposure times and there was a lot of failure with it, the over-curing of layers during printing also made removing supports very difficult as the everything was brittle instead of the usual half-cured soft and flexible, so while it may have been able to stay proper clear for a long time it was still stated by the manufacturer that some yellow would still occur, so that with the printing difficulties mae it very undesirable unless you MUST have printed cockpit windows for a larger scale project.
>>97517811>the only widely available ones to mercs areEverything, mercs (like all factions) get access to everything. This is not 40k.And even if you're going to choose to hobble yourself by lore restrictions mercs still get clear access to everything.
Was it ever explained what LRMs use to guide their rockets?
>>97517865Nothing, because they don't fire rockets.
>>97517841Yeah, I know that, but I like to use stuff that are relatively more common. Like how the Stoners allegedly sell the Taranis, but RATs don't show it up in merc tables that much if at all. Sure, I could take a Taranis anyways, but if the Cappies are actually willing to put out, it'd be slightly more fluffy to take their suits instead from the perspective of a merc that's trying to continuously maintain their forces. Also, FUCK Stoners
>>97517833Damn, and I'm going to guess coating it in varnish isn't going to help it maintain clarity? And how bad of a yellowing are we talking? Yellow, but still see-through, or effectively a yellow resin when left alone for too long?
>>97517964Yeah the resin is still transparent but it's yellowed like a plastic cup from the 80's that's still in grandmas cabinet. And no coating will prevent it, if UV hits it, it cures further.Transparent resin is the best resin for that reason though, opaque resins do not fully cure internally post-print and will over long periods of time eventually crack and split, whereas clear resin can fully cure internally.
>Battletech is renown for its extremely power ECM>Which somehow just excludes signal jamming for some reason

>>97518105It must have ECM, ECCM, ECCCM and ECCCCM!
>>97518109>>97518105now you know why the beagle weighs TONNES.
>>97518105Because it has an extra powerful ECM suite that goes above and beyond the standard. Also weighs above and beyond, and takes up space above and beyond. Every vehicle has a radio, not all vehicles fill up the entire trunk with radio equipment.
>>97518109Wait, it's got to overcome at least 4 other mechs worth of ECM and ECCM.So it must also have ECCCCCM, ECCCCCCM, ECCCCCCCM, ECCCCCCCCM, ECCCCCCCCCM, ECCCCCCCCCCM and ECCCCCCCCCCCM.
>>97517344>want to reunite Major mistake. They might wanna conquer the Sphere, but none of them are really interested in giving up that amount of power again.
>>97518073I'd just say that a bunch of 3025 machines are common Star League classics instead of the 2750 extinct machines. Why aren't fiber optic drones more popular in the lore? IRL we have ones that can reach out 60 kilometers and even further. You'd think an unjammable long-range missile that doesn't require TAG would be a pretty fuckin' big deal.

>>97518348>Why aren't fiber optic drones more popular in the lore? When did fiber optic drones start getting used in warfare regularly and when was most of the lore written?
>>97518348The timeline and tech diverged from ours in the 80s and they committed to that. >>97518373NTA but don't get into a fight about wire guided weapons and the 80s.
If there were fiber optic bomb drones, would they act like a prototype LRM that can only work in atmosphere?
>>97518441Gay. That's a clear mistake by the devs.
>>97518348You need to keep in mind that all a drone is, in effect, just another missile. They are extremely popular now because they are dirt cheap and super expendable, so especially in a fight between 2 third world countries like we see in Ukraine, they're the most efficient way to accurately deliver ordnance. Presumably in Battletech, there are better options, such as LRMs, accurate artillery, and accurate counters (AMS for ex) hat would make something as (relatively) slow as a drone irrelevant for the purpose of delivering firepower.
>>97518717It's the 80s in space. The electronics to make it happen won't let you make them small or cheap. You get cruise missiles not quadcopters.
>>97518717Yeah I'd assume if AMS can quite reliably shoot down dozens of missiles it shouldn't have any issue with a drone. Plus with how armor works in Battletech, the payload you'd be able to put on something like that would do one or two points at best.
Does BT have an explanation for why weapons, and especially sensor ranges are only in the hundreds of meters? Does it have not-Minovsky particles or something?
>>97518826This is a solid answer. AMS would slaughter drones, and yeah Mecharmor is nuts when you think about it.So unless its a tactical nuke, it aint doing much
>>97518717>You need to keep in mind that all a drone is, in effect, just another missile.Well, yes, but TOW technology doesn't just apply to drones, there are TOW missiles, and it's not like a mech can just shoot it down easily otherwise the Arrow IV wouldn't exist.
the only problem with tow missiles in battletech is ...>empty your archer's missile bins>your mech now looks like a giant retarded faggot as it drags fucking a gorillion spent tow lines of fibre optic around with it like a fucking pimp cape of sequins and fishnet
>>97518945Technically speaking, they can. They just don't in gameplay for balance reasons. If I remember right, the Partisan was mentioned as being used to shoot down missiles when it wasn't shooting planes.
>>97518977Honestly they should've just stuck with the 80's explanation, it makes more sense.
>>97518971I dunno, Archer in a pimp cape is kinda cool mental image. Question is, would the big pimp hat be on the hunch, or over the cockpit?
>>97518971Do we still have artfags? I really want to see this because the mental image alone is making me lose it.
>>97518971There are harpoon missiles in Battletech so could legit have been outfitted for fishing. Maybe its hunting whales?
Technically the TOW missile was invented in the 1960’s but similar to aircraft stealth it’s unlikely the writers at the time knew the importance of the technology yet or the impact it would have
>>97518826I guess I could see someone making it work strapping a SRM to a drone and pilot it into a mech as a desperate insurgent, but it'd still only do a few points of damage. If you've got ammo but no launchers, it's probably better to use them for IEDs and just not be anywhere near the 100 ton death machine.
>>97519120Just use AI
>>97518717>>97518826>>97518936AMS wouldn't be able to target drones. If there's no heat signature it wouldn't even register that there's a threat. Low damage? Just pilot the drone right into the mech's head.
>>97519317I don't think AMS needs a heat signature to track a target?
>>97519317There's nothing to my knowledge that suggests AMS works like that. I'd assume any object on a flight trajectory into the mech that it can detect would get shot. It probably uses something more advanced than just heat signature.Head shot? Cool it's still got 7 more armor points there.
>>97519120I can give it a go but don't expect anything good. Or fast
>>97519317Reminder that battletech has airplanes that can survive multiple tank shell hits.A plastic toy from temu with a grenade tied to it won't even scratch the paint.
>>97519317Why not just build a slightly bigger drone and load it with BA weapons instead of using it to suicide bomb the mech?
>>97518876Because its a game meant to be played on a kitchen table
>>97518876Tabletop ranges were never supposed to match the in-universe ranges, they were always suppose to be vastly shorter for gameplay purposes.
>>97518876>I can't figure out its meant to be a game and not to take things literally, the postWhy is it that Battletech seems to be the only tabletop wargame that routinely has this problem with people grasping this?
Remember that the only virtue of media is realism and being hard sci fi. Since all science fiction depends on something unrealistic, such as efficient fusion engines, even "hard" sci fi isn't hard, which means the only good sci fi is the kind that's perfectly realistic with no breaks from reality. Thus, we have to conclude that the only good science fiction is romance novels.
>>97519723Because a big part of it's draw is that it is the most hard scifi of all the tabletop games (that you can get players for) there is one about squads of russian and american astronauts fighting each other on the moon in kill team style skirmishes, but it's OOP and seems to not even have gotten it's pdf floating around the web.Scifi realism combat nerds come here, it's why we got an anon working on restructuring the game universe to fit into sol system without any FTL.
>>97519858I like the idea of the game in the sol system without FTL, but specifically for the Rockets and Rayguns AU, turning it into a 1930s sci fi style solar system with Davions and Kuritans warring over the canals of Mars, Lyrans and Capellans dueling in the swamps of Venus, and the Free World of Luna between them surrounded by the remnants of Earth's destruction, while out beyond known space the Clans of Planet X plot their return.I think it'd be cool
>>97519858>why we got an anon working on restructuring the game universe to fit into sol system without any FTLIsn't that just Heavy Gear at the end of the day?
>>97519873>every single thing that tries to be realistic takes place in sol system, doesn't that make them identical?!?!No, you are mistaking an aesthetic consequence for a narrative structure.reality is that humanity will only ever get to other stars by generation ships, even alpha centauri our closest neighbouring system is so far away that a child leaving on a generation ship for there will at best arrive as a senior approaching death.multiple systems will never exist under one government, this system is where we are stuck for interactions meaningful within a human lifetime, this system is therefore the sole focus of anything speculative which even pretends to be serious.
>>97519858And those people are wrong. Battletech is realistic only insofar as it's very <generally> plausible, and it doesn't really have aliens or psychic powers (stfu about phantom mech; I'm talking about Space marine librarians and shit) or magic or any of that bullshit. It's realistic in the same way Star Trek is; in that it tries to justify its super science, but only in a way that holds up if you agree not to actively try to pull it apart. The reason Battletech seems realistic is in COMPARISON to other sci fi tabletop wargames, and it's only highly realistic in comparison to 40k in particular. It's not actually a "hard sci-fi fi setting", because hard sci-fi makes for miserable and unpleasant gameplay, and the people who want to make/ruin what makes Battletech fun so it can be realistic instead should fuck off back to spacebattles.com, or kill themselves, or both.
>>97519894As clearly established, they should be reading romance novels instead. See >>97519841
>>97519894No it's realistic in every way except the stellar distance and the use of FTL.it is far more realistic than star trek just on the basis that they explain FTL communications as a specific technology and acknowledge that causal synchronicity is otherwise impossible, they also accept zero-G in ships outside of acceleration manouvres instead of handwaving gravity plating, don't have teleorters or a whole host of other things I don't have the space to list here, star trek is no remotely realistic. If people liking the realism aspects of battletech so much bothers you, you can always play 40k.
>>97519872That's absurd, R&R bullshit is more open to breaking the FTL travel/talk rules because it was founded as a genre before those were understood to be hard universal limitations.
>>97519841>efficient fusion engines must be involvedrules out of your own ass, ion drives, "dirty" torch ships, orion drives and laser powered sails are all frequently depicted in hard scifi.
>>97519915>people liking the realism aspects of battletech so much bothers you, you can always play 40k.Fuck off and choke on a cock you useless autist. No one wants you here.
>>97519926More like you don't want to be here.
>>97511645time to jack it to sara jay again
>>97519858I'd put Battletech less Hard Sci-Fi and more Hard Science Fantasy. It has far more in common with no-magic Low Fantasy settings with additions of broader Space Opera tropes for its tech, than it has in common with stuff like the Xeelee Sequence.
>>97519317>no heat signatureThey have heat signatures. Thats how current anti-drone systems see them today
>>97519841>no breaks from reality>romance novelsListen, organic beings don't stretch that much, and penis to overall body size ratios that skewed would result in all kinds of health problems that romance novels just don't show.
>>97519873Heavy Gear has FTL, it's just not as extensive as many other settings. Still, they've got something like a dozen inhabited planets.
>>97518673He specifically asked about fiber optic drones, not TOW missiles.
>>97520349>the Xeelee Sequence. Also not hard scifi.it's certainly better in that regard than the likes of trek and wars, but the plethora of science fantasy that is mistaken as scifi has really broken people on the perception of what is actually possible within the confines of physics.
>>97519873>.It's Gundam minus the psychic pilots and spirtual bullshit
>>97520472So minus the autism? Got it.
Who's the Gul Dukat equivalent of Battletech?
>>97520470How the fuck is Xeelee Sequence not hard sci-fi?
>>97520532The Draconis Combine. All of it.
>>97520545>intergalactic war>aliums>dark matter aliumsGee, I really don't know.
>>97520470Figuring out if a setting is hard sci-fi or not should be really simple. Is the combat in the setting fun to play? Does mankind exist on multiple planets? If the answer to either question is yes, then it's not hard sci-fi.
>>97520580Tell me what hard sci-fi is, please.
>>97520532Nobody has that much charisma in Battletech.
>>97520591Real life.
>>97520609I accept your concession.Retard.
>>97520591Whatever is sci-fi and makes me hard, dumbass.
>>97520609That is called mundane sci-fi, and it almost universally sucks
>>97520591Romance novels, as established upthread.
>>97520609Based
>>97520591Science fiction that takes physics as known seriously, which the xeelee sequence laughs in the face of.Humanity fighting an intergalactic war over millions of years? Please, hat's like saying current human efforts to deal with artifical climate change is "Trilobytes fighting a war with the environment" just on timescale alone. Cryostasis as a cope? ryostatsis is proven to be a fantasy and no other form of stasis is describable even theoretically a this point, humans on ice (or equivalent) is fantasy. and intergalactic conflict? that's a joke when you consider the timescales, energy requirements and the possible gains (which won't even be realized by your own species due to timescale) it is logistically retarded to even consider such a thing. Aliens? one could argue they are an inevitability regardless of current observations, sure, but Dark Matter Aliens? that crosses speculation into metaphysical pseudo theory, aka FANTASY.You want hard scifi? Try Poul Anderson's "Orion Shall Rise" or "The Stars Are Also Fire" (and the other three books in that series). When it comes to true Hard Scifi writing there are many short stories, but full length novels? Less than a dozen exist, everything else that claims that genre is incorporating massive handwaved bullshit in one regard or another, usually involving aliens, FTL and/or unobtaniums.
>>97520707>involving aliens, FTL and/or unobtaniums.ie, everything that makes settings interesting and fun to play games in.
>>97520726Correct. Things that are "interesting" or "fun" are bad.
>>97520726Np, works like those I mentioned which face the truth of reality constraints create a different kind of interesting by opening doors that sticking to the established wagnerian narrative does not force you to confront.Exploring new creative territory like that is hard and most authors are neither interested in the work of it nor capable of it.Read The Stars Are Also Fire, you'll be doing your brain and imagination a huge favour.
>>97520707The Xeelee Sequence was written with how the universe was believed to work and what was considered reasonably possible as of its publication. Which started in 1992.It certainly isn't fully accurate now, but that's because we have 34 years of scientific advancement since then. That is 17 iterations of Moore's Law ago, only 2 years into the existance of the Internet, and 11 before the Human Genome Project completed...23 years ago. Steven Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" was cutting edge at the time, being a mere 4 years old at that time. The linear passage of time does not disqualify something from being Hard Sci-Fi, just makes it outdated Hard Sci-Fi.
>>97520960>what was considered reasonably possible as of its publication. Which started in 1992.No, even then we were fully aware of the laughability of millions of years of continuity and non-speciation.
Finally a nice fucking hornet model

>>97521073Oh, patreon. I don't even know how to buy something off that, I'll have to wait for it to get shared by someone elsewhere.I'd buy it if it was on cults or myminifactory, good old fashioned "add to cart, give money, download and done"
>>97521108Oh I forgot the patreon hides the page with links to his cults page. He usually uploads his stuff to mff after a while and patreons get it for free, imho it's decent value, but here you gohttps://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/hornet-for-american-mecha
So every conventional vehicle also has to be running ECM and ECCM right?
>>97521134Thank you very much! Why would he hide that? almost missed a sale.
>Medium blue with significant white markings and gold highlightsWhat does it mean by 'white markings?' Stripes? Checkers? Stars?
>>97521176On release the post for patrons includes both links and codes that let them redeem the files for free, and for whatever reason he doesn't seem to have mmf/cults links displayed anywhere else? Weird way to do things, yeah. His stuff is really cool, he makes some niche mechs, especially wob/comstar mechs (really cool wyvern imho) and some later Confederation and Combine mechs. They're not multipart, but making such files is a lot of work tbf.
>>97521175It's standard for pretty much everything that isn't just a man on foot.
>>97521196Up to interpretation, the standard steiner horizontal blue white split was made dominant white by interpretive choice of the first to paint it, it wasnt specifically described that way, the trend stuck and now it's the "canon" by usage, though I don't believe it was ever cemented with the firm statement that "this is now canon"
