Is it basically impossible to paint smooth white armor on Tau without an airbrush? I'm relatively new to painting but I get all the fundamentals and have been practicing and watching/reading tons of guides. I have an okay time painting most things but I just can't get the white to go on smooth.
I try to thin my paints properly but I've heard thinning white too much makes it chalky so I can't actually tell if I'm thinning it too much, not enough, or just right but the paint sucks so it doesn't matter. (For the record I'm using Vallejo Matt White, not Corax.)
I've also tried building up lighter coats of grey before finishing in white but the result always seems the same. It's chalky and rough. I often see people recommend painting off-white or yellow/blue-ish white instead but I'm aiming for boxart-style Tau and it just doesn't seem possible with a brush.

copying the box art is tricky because it's meant to look simple but is done by expert painters using a bunch of non-GW stuff. if you really want pure white then pro acryl titanium white is the best hobby brand but even that's difficult to work with compared to off whites that allow you to highlight/do osl and stuff. making the base tone of your armour the literal brightest colour you can have is very limiting.

Inevitably, yes. The social pressure will continue and all it takes is one activist exec, poorly informed exec or particularly coked up exec to pull the trigger. Once the genie is out of the bottle, it can't be put back in. We've seen from the Custodes situation they're not even particularly concerned with justifying the change lorewise anymore: simply, "it was always this way." The only question is how long it will take before it happens.

Basing and black rim to be done but first 1k ready to field, learned quite a bit when switching from markers to brush and still have a plenty to learn, especially blending, highlighting and drybrushing finishes but I will leave that for future me. Already planned out expansion for 2k and it's way less models since double Hekaton tax. Yes I know I have to clean up my desk and drill the fucking barrels but somehow of my 2 hand drills none can fit the one that is perfect size for the muzzles which is puzzling me a bit...

At a governmental level there's definitely been a swing away from "woke." But the employees hired under "woke" hiring practices, and the new fans attracted by "woke" overtures, have not disappeared overnight, and it both cases whether or not they are numerically dominant they represent the squeakiest wheel. Their voices are consistently the ones corpos are hearing the most from, and "do this because it is morally correct" is probably more persuasive than "lower prices because they are current usurious" or "bring back this Rogue Trader lore detail please."

Like I said, even if "woke's" star is setting, all it takes is one highly-placed idiot to make the call. "They" only have to get lucky once, we have to get lucky every board meeting.

Eldar into Thousand Sons. My Fuegan did zero damage, my Avatar killed a single Terminator, my Banshees failed their charge and died having done nothing, and I couldn't deep strike my Spiders or Hawks because he had two squads of the free Overwatch bots and Flamer rubrics screening his backfield. I couldn't scratch his Terminators much at all, his Magnus shrugged off everything, and it felt like 90% of his weapons has AP-2 so nothing I had was making decent saves.
He didn't even throw a lot of units in, just Magnus, a 10-man Terminator block, and a Rubric squad. Never failed any of his rituals either.
It didn't feel like there were misplays, just the dice saying "Nah get fucked".

Already I see some issues in how you played your army. Over relying on deep strike is a mistake when you have some of if not THE best transport play (move shoot move into your transport) in the game. Your Fuegan should be hopping out wiht his boys to gank high value targets, the avatar shouldnt be fighting terminators because its possibly the worst match up for him, you want him fighting monsters like Magnus or tanks. Terminators 4 up invuln will give them a great chance to tieing up your avatar for the whole game and maybe outright killing it. Him not failing any of his rituals is just a bit of high roll, you might have been unlucky, but Eldar is all about making sure your units are fighting their best target. All those inefficiencies can add up when you are playing a squishy army, so its hard to tell with a full batrep wether you lost because you failed to try to do this or your opponent was just very good and didn't let you.

I once saw one of my stores sperglords run an intro game against one of his friends, Eldar v. Nids in a custom mission that gave Eldar fucked rules, sperglord also had a 40pt custom spear relic on his favourite farseer which gave the following special rules
>Ap2
>Pyskers mastery 4
>Eternal warrior
>Armour/flesh bane
>Preferred enemy(everything)
>Fearless
The intro player playing nids got trounced on and just had no interest at all in Warhammer after that game.

I'm willing to bet they won't imply that there were always women in the boys club, but that the situation is so grim in the darkness that it doesn't matter if they're a woman, we need bodies on the field. I think the light might be washing it out a bit. I use a healthy amount on nuln, i dont want to overdo it. But yeah, I could do better with the lenses with a white base and lighting them.
Admech is my first army, and it's been east to ruin. I've got some ugly ass skitarii to show for it.
>>
>>97517094
It's a good little techpriest well done.
If you want to do more on it, The highlights are a little chunky. You can thin then down by taking the base/layer colour and running that along the edge of the highlight. It is easier than highlighting, and makes the highlight thinner and straighter.

Someone a few threads ago wanted to see my berzerker dreadnought. His arms are magnetized so I can put them in whatever pose I want. The head is the top from Uriah Jacobus's staff, along with some pewter cabling from I think dragonforge. I copied the conversion from a really old white dwarf article (old enough to use the metal chaos dread as a base), but instead I used a recast FW IW chaos dreadnought. The arms are 3d printed except the chainfist itself, which is a FW chaos chainfist that I had leftover from a different conversion.

I'm probably asking something dumb but how does the progenoid gland make more marines?
I don't have any sources I can ask
Are they supposed to not rip the entire organ out of living and willing participants? The only depictions I can find are of dead marines losing theirs
>>
>>97518039
Geneseed is the catch all term for all the artificial organs put inside a marine, often used interchangably with the progenoid gland. the progenoid gland is an organ that grows all the other many organs a space marine needs.
>>
>>97518039
The basic cellular structures of the astartes organs are formed inside the gland. It's by harvesting the cells from the gland and transplanting those into young boys that new marines can be created.
>>
>>97518039
A Space Marine grows 2 progenoid glands/geneseed through their life. One can be relatively easily removed while they’re alive, though it’s unusual for chapters to actually do so strangely enough, while the other one is deep within the marine and is why Apothecaries have the absolver pistols to blast a hole in them to get to it.

I guess that means if you make it to 5 years service, you're safe from your tombstone saying "He never scored", and 10 years means you've won
>the extinction of a type of gene-seed...
They make it sound like a marine only carries seed for precisely one of the organs

I also assume I'd be asking too many questions if I said
>hey so scouts get a lot of implants
>and a lot of chapters get their scouts killed in training, intentionally
>and sometimes even their final initiation ritual can kill
>and maybe we should ignore tabletop deathrate like we do for eldar

how does that work if they only get two geneseeds per marine that also didn't die immediately? Do you get a "We're sorry for your loss" card signed by Marneus Calgar if your "child" didn't make it?

The Marine is likely dying with his armor on, and the battlefield is no place to take the time to remove it, so they’ll likely need to blast it open,

>They make it sound like a marine only carries seed for precisely one of the organs
Zygotes carry the gene-seed for all the implants. Losing the gene-seed for zygotes or the black carapace means the chapter cannot create more implants to make more marines nor interface with all of their gear.
>how does that work
Don't think about it. Maybe, if a chapter is decimated, they use the test-slave method again to revitalize the numbers. Makes you wonder why even bother relying on marines producing new marines, if you can vat grow implants?
>>

>Don't think about it. Maybe, if a chapter is decimated, they use the test-slave method again to revitalize the numbers. Makes you wonder why even bother relying on marines producing new marines, if you can vat grow implants?
The test slaves have to be biologically compatible, which seems to be the biggest problem. Billions of people in the Imperium, but imagine how hard it would be to find enough slaves who are compatible with the zygote to restore a chapter to fighting strength.
>>
>>97518154
>It takes about 55 years of constant reproduction to produce 1,000 healthy sets of organs.
Huh so it takes 11 years for a gene-seed to grow
>>
>>97518154
It’s probably a bureaucracy issue more than anything else. High Lords controlling the process means they exert authority over Marines as a institution, so they do not share the process with them.
>>
>>97518170
Fuck I mean 5 years, did the maths wrong
>>
>>97518170
Well, it takes 10 years for both sets of zygotes to mature. There's no mention of the test-slaves being implanted with anything other than the progenoids. Since each zygote contains the gene-seed for all 19 implants, and the progenoids are implanted into new hosts, that would mean by the time a chapter has a full 1000 sets of implants, they also got tons of spare ones missing the progenoids. Also, all scouts that die before getting their full organs leave behind some of the implants that weren't implanted. Maybe this is intentional, allowing more fuck-ups during the implantation and early service?

Maybe they use initiates that fail a physical test or mental/will power test during training. Or one who gets injured enough just enough that he can't become a Marine, but could still be used as a test-slave.

>Phil is selected to become a Space Marine
>Is the most biologically compatible within current intake of initiates
>First test before any implantation is to stand at attention in the freezing night, while holding a 250kg weight over his head and not dropping it
>Some initiates pass test
>Phil and other initiates fail
>Given second chance
>Some initiates pass test
>Phil and other initiates fail again
>Other failed initiates are disposed off or made serfs
>Phil is made a test-slave to best serve the chapter

>Initiates Tom and Rodger is undergoing weapons training ahead of implantation
>Rodger is a retard who often ignores instructions
>Rodger accidently shoots Tom in the head
>Tom is still alive, but severely brain damaged
>Both Initiates have high gene-seed compatibility
>Tom is made into a test-slave so that he can still serve the chapter
>Rodger is made into a test-slave as punishment for his constant fuckups
>>
>>97518222
Makes sense, yeah.I wonder if a chapter took enough losses, could they gather enough compatible slaves to bring the chapter back to fighting strength or would they just be written off? I know a number of marine chapters pre-Primaris hit unsustainable or nearly unsustainable numbers due to war and general bad times.

So true. The most striking imagery from the Siege of Terra I recall is the walls that have crucified knights and titans on it.
40k does need more chaos xenos as well. And not some fucking 'alien species working with chaos' which is fine but also more weird and esoteric stuff, like a 40k version of the Jaenshi and the weird mentally blank hivemind slaves they are they you can't figure out until you create some godless Jaenshi and they themselves realise they don't know how their own society operates

Crimson Fists were once reduced to just 128 members. Blood Angels have been on the brink of extinction at least four times, once reduced to just 50 members. I could have sworn I read somewhere it took half a century for BA to recover from that, which could imply they had to use something like the test-slaves to build enough gene-seeds to replenish their numbers.

I was thinking it’d be neat to have unit enhancements to make units feel more special and unique without a character, but then I realized War Gear costs was already that. Pump more points into a unit for special equipment to denote their special status compared to a regular batch of troops and making /yourdudes/ is naturally supported by the rules. It would be a bold move bringing it back to the point I don’t think they ever will, but I think it would pan out better in the long run if they did.
>>
>>97517777
Mechanized precision assaults. Normally that translates as boarding teams targeting specific systems and sections of an enemy ship. On the tabletop they use fast moving transports to play fire brigade and run around burninating enemy weakpoints. On paper they should be anti-tank specialists but in reality they tend to overcommit on Mankiller weaponry and close combat. Guard and Knights are their biggest problems because they can bring disgusting amounts of armour up.

They do. But you gotta find them first. Out in the plain there might be the best, fastest, stealthiest aspirant there can be...but if he's good enough, he'll hide just good enough, long enough, that the Sky Warriors will miss him until he's old enough.
He will get to live his life AND die his death in the steppes, instead of living forever in another's stead, far away from home. A life of death, and even dying might not mean rest...
>>
>>97518272
>It'd be harder to do on savage worlds with no actual infrastructure

Once every few years an Apothecary and a couple of Marines show up at each village, to great celebration to test the local warriors and make sure they're "pure". Sometimes they take a tribesman away to "serve" them and/or the God-Emperor, which is considered a great honour to not only the tribesman and their family, but the tribe as a whole.

I have 3 of the old attack bike with sidecar
is the ATV any good? I'd happily proxy them as the gokart

It is surprising how fast the community went from believing competitive play is the boogeyman to almost everyone using competitive setups both on and offline

lovely thick solid paints with single garish tones, very nice

I was gifted Haarken already built and didn't convert it.

So I have a BL character in my warband and used him as such.

Its crazy how quickly people forgot about the whole power level controversy.
>>
>>97518836
even back in 5e people were competitive, but it was in the same way a bracket 2 CEDH pod is competitive, everyone is trying to win with suboptimal lists
>>
>>97518879
But what does the scouter say about his power level?
>>
>>97518879
probably because it was how most folks played the game anyways. Units had three ways to be ran: barebones, spec'd out, odd WYSIWYG. The first two were by far the most common

I blame covid, the sweats all metachased on TTS during lockdown and casual pick up games stopped
>>
>>97518836
there was no shift, it was always this way, if you want good games you have to find good people, not good rules
>>
>>97518379
I'm nogames and have no intention of playing desu.
Last time I tried 40k with my brother was few months before Arks of Omen were announced. We ignored all those weird gamey meta special abilities like those stratagems. And immediately changed the way charging works, because it wasn't immersive, but game still wasn't fun.

Entire idea of meeting with randoms to play, in some shop at that, sounds bizarre and alien to me. In fact playing tabletop whenever I'm in a tabletop mood feels like a complete and utter waste of a time I could better spend making more models instead.
>>
>>97519013
Casual pick ups happen on TTS anon, you can just join or host a lobby. I think the difference is before 8th no one knew what was good, even that grog at your LGS who would threaten to table you if you brought forgeworld

If I go into my local warhammer store are they gonna be all up in my face asking if they can help me and pushing me to buy space marines or what?

I'm gonna be using kasrkin with these grav chutes, gonna cut the cables on their guns and glue a aquilon style box mag on there.
The kasrkin heads would work for warhawks but I need something extra to make them look less cadian.

I mean have fun however you want.
But it sounds like normal social interaction is also not your thing.

Also charging is awkward, and it's awkwardness is due to the game needing to be balanced.
>>
>>97519032
Not my experience. They usually just ask if they can help you, and then leave you alone if you say browsing or whatever.
GW used to be terrible with its stores, but now they understand in the internet age the stores exist to backstop FLGS. And be a clean entry point to the hobby. My current experience is that they don't give a shit about pushing product in the stores anymore. Like not saying they aren't a predatory company, but they understand brick and mortar needs to be the soft hand tickling the balls. I mostly just go in at the end of day pickup some paint and shoot the shit with the manager and old timers for a few minutes.
>>
>>97517696
Character driven fiction do not belong in a wargame setting.
>>
>>97519947
>wargame setting
It's just a setting and has been since GW had books like Inquisitor published or all the random short stories in White Dwarf.
