It's the default option that requiores zero effort, zero thinking, zero planning and can be run while still doomscrolling your phone. Been like this since forever. This naturally leads to the next logical step: playing blatant self-insert, that acts, thinks and behaves exactly like the player running such character (which is - being half-absent and generally ignorant) and that's when the player isn't busy doomscrolling. If not prompted that this is their combat round, they will just continue to passively sit by the table, not contributing to the only thing their character is (technically) good at.But then never-games decided that yep, this is some sort of political statement, because they never fucking played anything, so here we are, with the endless spam going for 8 years and counting

speaking of, what's the best system for playing a fighter/martial character? so far, based on my searchings, it's DCC for the mighty deed die. anybody else got any recommendations?
that's why i really like generic fighter in pathfinder 1e compared to generic fighter in dnd 3.5 as pathfinder gets cool martial stuff like weapons training, armor training, armor penalties become less and less hindrance until armor becomes second skin of fighter, on top of increased feat progression that he inherited from 3/3.5 fighter. So fighter in Pathfinder 1e really feels like he's master warrior that operates on level far beyond regular knights or sellswords.
>>97533176Conan 2d20. everyone is fucking badass that can cleave enemies head off and loose war cry that scares mooks shitless. and best thing? everyone, EVERYONE is fucking badass warrior in that world. want to play assassin or rogue? well, he's also badass at fighting. want to play sorcerer? sorcery is dangerous and corrupts your mind and body, you need to be tough. and as spells are slow and ritualistic, you must be great warrior too. Want to play as noble? well, a lot of nobles are trained knights, ergo, good at fighting.
>>97533476cool, not familiar with that one but i am playing the fallout version of that. playing as a dude with a custom shishkebab(flaming katana). it's pretty fun just cutting through mobs like scythe to wheat. counting dmg is kinda awkward/slows down the game since you have to roll multiple dice and divine from them the damage you dealt. i like the action point system. im blanking on some fun shenanigans i did in game but i once was able to shove 5 people and a cyberdog inside a restroom stall to hide in.

Having a mundane baseline makes the fantastical elements feel more special.
>>97522414Is that why I'm attracted to him?
>>97534181Not universally, no.That logic only works when magic is rare, inconvenient, dangerous for the user, or has wider reaching consequences. In something like D&D, or something imitating D&D, where pretty much everything is magical, there's no reason why anything mundane would exist. If mundane things exist in such a prominently magical world, there needs to be more effective recognition of, defenses against, counters to, and equalizers for magic, and D&D doesn't deliver on these things. You have to count on your DM agreeing with you for these things. These things are not class features.

And both are stupid. The former doesn't grasp that playing a simple character is a show of player skill because they have to make them enjoyable without relying on established racial or class traits. They're not smart enough to get why, or skilled enough to do so. They just know "less stuff means better", and will strip out any personality, any motivation, any identity past that of a select number of npc tropes, because they're not actually skilled players. It will always be a fighter, because that's the accepted thing. It will always be a simpleminded town guard or mercenary out for coin, because those are established as acceptable. They will never ever play a non-magic ranger or a rogue or a monk, because to them that's deviation, which means they're an inferior player. The other type attaches an unhealthy concept of defiant masculine conservatism to the concept of a HMF. Defying dragons with sword and shield, but moreso defying others in the hobby by insisting on the concept being popular and powerful and based and chad. It cannot be suppressed by the 99% saying it's brainrot. It cannot be outshone by the teeming hordes of filthy libtards playing freakshit races and mages and women.Where in reality the pc is a forgettable npc who never gets engaged with because he never engages with the quest, and the player is one of the more insufferable people you'll meet in the modern gaming sphere, because odds are he's short and/or fat, and constantly tells people their PC's are bad.

He's a human male fighter, sword and board. Yep." Is the same as sitting down and saying."This is Darkfang. >>97548816NTA, but it is embarrassing. Because now he's associated with a group of phenomenally unware, cringe-inducing 'players'. Half of which don't actually play games, and the other half of which play them terribly badly, get grumpy about it, and tell everyone else their game/character is shit.
Are human male fighters the most oppressed combination?
>>97521381True. Plus have the best average-sized cock.
>>97548889no, that's still halfling fighter
Fighter-chuds, rise up!
>>97521350Why can't the default be a Non-binary Fighter?
>>97552806Because they use they/them pronouns... and that’s a lot of slashing damage!
>>97552584I mean actual characters people actually play, not comic relief
>>97521350Simple concepts age better and last longer.
>>97548816>What makes it embarrassing?did you read the post you replied to?Are you clinically retarded?
>>97556430RIP fantasy with grand themes and bigger-than-life heroes.
>>97557862Yawn.People want more grounded stories, and if you can't create narrative tension and character interest without going full capeshit then you're a dummy ding-dong.
>>97560114>capeshit>when these tropes are older than supermanZoomers and Gen Alpha are fucked.
>>97540233I played a human male fighter in my last campaign because everyone else was paying a spellcaster and I thought we should have at least one character who can take a few hits and deal consistent damage. He was male because I'm male
>playing the NPC classwhy
>>97561205It's only NPC class if you, as the player, are only reactive, and not proactive. Unfortunately, the average person who plays Fighter is an NPC.
>>97521369>blames /polNigga, it’s the woke-tards that made it a thing.when larian studios called out people for making white male fighters and called it “boring” it was the left that ran with it as some sort of win in the culture war. As if *not* being a white male (fighter) was somehow special.
>>97531965>posts a paladin >african woman in culturally appropriated European (white) armorHow can you fuck up this badly?
>>97541871The cute tavern wench you met in the first village
>>97561565>a 5/10 for civilized men>a 10/10 goddess for barbarians
I like human male fighters.I also like a lot of other races and classes. An interesting human fighter can be as interesting as any other race/class combo and vice versa.idk I just like playing stuff. Doesn't matter to much to me but I'm not great at playing dedicated spell slingers. Partial spellcasters are fine though.
The only time I've tried playing a human male fighter, half the table chuckled at each other like "is this guy serious?" and the rest stared at me in that way where they don't want to seem outwardly hostile but I definitely like like I did something really wrong.DM took me aside to talk about it and I ended up playing a tabaxi ranger.
>>97543676and they are all running a train on the elf while the human male is asleep in his tent
>>97561749That DMs name? Wokesly.
>>97561749It really is the most persecuted character type
>>97561540>durr durr woke derp. It was not a fighter and had nothing to do with woke boogeyman retards like you cry about. It was a cleric and they did not like this because they put so much work into character creator only for people to barely use it. Not being a that is special as human fighter is the most common race class combo in D&D PnP.
>>97521350Is cool.
>>97562723Some would say he's a barbarian, but the man is Greek.
>>97563176>Speaks (Archaic) Greek>Doesn't wear trousersBarbarian check passed
>>97563226Isn't barbarian derived from a Greek onomatopoeia making fun of foreigners who can't speak Greek?
>>97563451Yeah.You pass the Barbarian check by (surprise surprise) not being a Barbarian.Like, wew lad.
>>97541712>My motivation is to not go out for an adventureNogamez confirmed
>>97538211>This is the level of mental gymnastics needed just to not say "I couldn't be arsed to make a character, here is my last-moment idea, give me that pen and sheet"
>>97539259>heavy armor,wrong>two-handed swordwrong>no real spells, wrong>no pet.Wrong once moreNigger, do you even know which character you are talking about? Also>rangers are defiend by spells and animal companions, and not being fucking RANGERSNigga, you dense
This is peak depiction of human male fighter debate me
