Also art feed back, and even flavor text. All criticism is welcome.
Now we go into Golgari. This card actually use to have better art, but I've since have changed it, because when V2 of the set was lost, I couldn't find replacement art.
Another poison counter card, experimenting on the mechanic in 'relatively' unique ways. Do note, many of these were designed before that last phyrexian set that came out.
A big ol' Vanilla!
In the first thread, someone actually recommended that I use this art for the card Farmer (>>97485191 >>97486587). I told them I had already used that art. This is the card in question.
>>97525316Chronic addiction is not a great name for a magic card, it's far too real. Try something like >Lingering Compulsion>Gnawing Obsession>Desperate Cravings >Erosion of WillWould make it pop more and feel less clinical
We end Golgari with 'The Witch of Flanders'. Originally this had a drawback of giving you a poison counter when activated, but it was so unnecessary I dropped it.Instead you get a neat little poison counter enabler.Don't have any lore on this one written that can't be implied by looking at the card.
>>97525267>Creatures can't use their abilities>Players can't gain lifefixed
Honestly, I designed this (and Butterfly Effect) before Tibalt's Trickery existed. Honestly, I should remove it from the sheet, fairy mythos be damned. It's just abusable. Abusing it is fun, however. Also I know a card in Lorwyn has the same name.
>A infamous, but humble seamstress, who can make garbs to rival even the best of fey. Some have suspected she may be a fey herself who was crib swapped.
>>97525267Would be cool if it also had "creature cards can't leave graveyards"
>>97527564>>97492998 already does that.
I'm not entirely sure how this should be worded, but I think as written, it is understandable.
>>97525425>Erosion of Will>Desperate Cravingone of these
>>97525281Modern MTG tier flavor text
>>97528044Should cost 2 or 3 mana it's quite situational and even in the appropriate situation it's quite bad.
>>97528679I did debate 3 mana.>>97528649Modern MTG could never have flavor text this good.
>>97528649Wrong for two reasons:One, he forgot to close his quotation markTwo, the flavor text implies a committed heterosexual relationship
>>97528762There are many heterosexual relationships in Magic they're all just interracial. Implying he hates his wife is the bigger sin.
>>97528762Thanks anon>>97528783Bestiality is immoral...
Holy Armor and Firebreathing
>>97526869Just do "counter target creature spell you don't control". Should fix the turn 2 Emrakuls.
>>97525254You're doing good work lad, it's always beautiful to see creativity and passion. I wish you all the best. Are you planning on getting these printed? It would be a bit of an investment (depending on your circumstances) but even enough to draft with mates maybe, a proxy site will dot for example. that would give you some physical relic for your effort.
>>97529421Good idea
>>97528053"Faeries (you control) gain all abilities from auras enchanting Titania" should do it.>>97528968I'd like to nominate an addition to the second half to give the duel both a flavor of locking down two combatants as well as a flavor of a victor getting some sort of honor bonus. Something like, "If a target creature dies, the other target gains protection from creatures. Otherwise, tap those creatures."
>>97529771It's the text of Arena anon.
>>97529847The opponent gets to choose their creature in that case, but point made. While I still like my idea, I'll admit it's hard to think of a reward bonus that isn't a generic +stat counter that doesn't break 2-mana power.
>>97529525Thanks anon! Yeah I'm hoping to eventually get it printed as a cube. Or even eventually a playset so we can build decks.
I don't really have any lore written for the Elder Dragons. They were honestly designed before I had any lore in mind for the set. Instead, they are wedge colored Elder Dragons in the vein of the OG ones, and not like Piru.
Anagram for Sultai
>Elected due to a combination of fear and tradition, Richard would end up the last King of the Realm.
Just wanna say that I love a good chunk of these cards. They’re evocative and remind me of browsing through old sets like Mirage and Ice Age where there a blend of metaphysical and tangible. Looking forward to the complete set to just print to play.
With this, we end all the colored card in the set. This was originally going to be a 5 colored elder dragon, then while looking at a Kubin art gallery online, I saw this. The rest sort of fell into place.>Sitting in a pocket on the bottom of the plane. This terrifying being is trapped, but if he was ever to escape, the whole Plane could be in danger.
The correct format of art for Crown
>>97532115>>97532115Thanks for the kind words anon
Inspired by Frankenstein's Monster from the Dark obviously.
>>97532231the son of god reduced to an uncommon
>>97533153He came not to save the mythics but the commons too
>>97533153Lots of other people were Crucified you know? This card was just supposed to be the Roman execution device, not the symbol of the son of God.
Guardian is another archaic creature type that was quietly removed with the Great Creature Type Update. Unlike most of the others, Guardian actually had a single tribal card, Ivory Guardian in Legends, reprinted in Chronicles and 5th edition.
Magic is one of two card games I've ever played that cares about expansions (the other is Score's DBZ CCG). I understand why it was removed, but since I was exploring archaic mechanics, I decided one of these would be appropriate. This card actually had the most art changes between all the cards in the set.
>>97525267It's "Memento Mori", Anon.
>>97534448Holy shit?! Thanks for the correction.
Now we move onto nonbasic lands. Thank you everyone. This is the final stretch.
Most of the nonbasics fall into a cycle. Common ally color lands are basic filter lands. Useful in a pinch, not game breaking by any means.
The legendary lands all work with an activated ability. Back when I first made these, six or seven years ago, I thought they were broken. Some seem tame compared to some of the post FIRE lands they've made.
The last cycle is 'depletion lands', which are enemy colored, and are inspired by the same cycle of lands from Ice Age.
One of two 'outliners' outside the cycle.
This card was originally titled 'Coal Mine' which fit the whole 'civilization infrastructure' theme of the other, but I couldn't find an art piece I liked. Then I saw this, and well, that was that.
Holy shit! Saved!
With this, we finish non-basic lands, and we go into basics. After that, I'll clean up the images, put them into a drop box, and I'll release them to the world, finally finishing the expansion. Any rec's before I finish?
>>97539350Comically worst one of the cycle
doing god's work anon. I imagine this took a lot of work
>>97541511About Seven years, Three Major revisions.
I always felt basics not having flavor text was a wasted opportunity for world building. I know those DnD ones had them, but they were uninspiring and lame.
Was anyone all that interested in the lore of my setting?
Do you intend to have these printed? Since they aren't MPC ready, how would you go about it?
>>97545764Initially PC printer and cutting.
With this, we post the last of the cards that aren't last minute adds.
I fixed Farmers, and gave it a public domain flavor text.
I changed the name of the great wall
Finally I was short a red common, and had this, from another design sheet.
>>97544211the drop seems bolder here, error?>>97544238sure man
>>97547420Yes, thanks, fixed
Bump
>>97539517You forgot the legendary on this one
>>97550775Damn
>>97539517This needs to be a pain land, comes into play tapped, or have island / swamp already in play. As is, it’s a superior version of Underground Sea.Great work on this set. Keep it up!
>>97552119It was supposed to be a legendary. Not sure how it made it to that not lol.
>>97525324I really like the idea, but i feel it has too much control on its own card. Having it be a reanimation clone is great, but it shouldnt be able to eliminate counterplay by exiling for free.Arguably id prefer if it couldn't at all, but it definitely needs a restriction. Once per turn as a sorcery, require tapping, having a restrictive colored mana cost (BB fits).
>>97525428I dislike that it feels like its enchanting a creature to be poisonous. I think targeting a player would feel better thematically>The next time target player would lose life this turn, that player gets a poison counter. You could also make it symmetrical>The next time a player loses life this turn, that player gets a poison counter.Generally a nerf, but it would create an interesting opportunity for counter play through direct damage/drain, could punish a player that needed to spend life by activating before they might otherwise pay that life, and would provide multi-player synergy all in one.
>>97527046I dont believe this works mechanically as intended, as exchange doesn't mean moving zones that im aware of in the rules. >Sacrifice an aura enchanting a creature. If you do, return another target aura that could enchant that creature from your graveyard to the battlefield enchanting that creature. I admit its been a minute since I really buckled down on wording, but it should be something like that
>>97527195Is this intended to allow multiple same colored enchantments that enter simultaneously to enchant her? It does so right now, but if you dont want that you could tweak it>The protection granted by an aura doesn't remove that aura. This would prevent mass simultaneous auras.
>>97525254>multicolour >fails vanilla testThis type of cards was bad even when they printed Legends.Unless 5/5 is somehow the best statline in the set.
>>97553273Yes, it is intended. >>97553274I'm aware. It's admittedly something of a remnant from the earliest designs of the set. I do like how he feels like a bad Legends legend though. >>97553251That's the idea. Originally she did give you poison counter as well, but it felt too weak.
>>97532051"Legendary landwalk" is two words, see Ayumi from CHK block.
>>97553280>It's admittedly something of a remnant from the earliest designs of the set. I do like how he feels like a bad Legends legend though. So it's a card to be looked at and not played. Not how I designed my custom sets, but you do you.If you ever want it to make it playable, cutting the cost by 2, or adding lifelink and first strike should do the job.
>>97534117It would be nice if you could activate it multiple times, ala Rocket Launcher. Its such a narrow and overcooked effect that I feel it'd be fine, and playing more music for the session to break more enchantments (I picture it as breaking people out of a trance) seems thematic.
>>97533363>-0/+2You dont use negative 0, unless it was a typo to begin with. Also, the 2: is strictly worse, as its net 0 while the 1: is +2/+2 for 2 mana to begin with.
>>97553280It feels like you are aiming for different design philosophies with your response desu.First you say yes, you like this niche interaction that rewards rules mastery and opens up unique interactions with other potential designs. Then you say, this understatted vanilla is fine despite being homelands tier unplayable and isnt even particularly large compared to other creatures in the set.Lastly you say, nah you actually want to be extremely specific in design so as to not allow emergent gameplay and to stifle counter play or unique interactions.Any of those could be fine, but they clash.
>>97553290Lifelink didn't exist in 1995 anon. Sure you had El-Hijjaj, but he was more an exception that proved the rule. >>97553296It gives off color enchantment removal. Off color effects on artifacts always were inefficent back in the day.>>97553302You're not wrong. >>97553285I actually forgot she existed. I was using the card from Legends.
>>97553331>It gives off color enchantment removal. Off color effects on artifacts always were inefficent back in the day.Sure, but making it so that you can spend 8 mana to remove 2 enchantments instead of 5 for one isnt exactly efficient either. If you don't know, Rocket Launcher wasn't artifact that sacrificed itself upon resolution of its ability instead of as a cost. This allowed a person to use it multiple times by holding priority. It dealt 1 damage, was colorless, and the activation wasnt efficient.
>>97553343Was an* Damned autocorrect
>>97553329>>97553329No this is clearly inspired by the likes of Jerrard of the Closed Fist, Kasimir the Lone Wolf, and Tobias. Most of the uncommon legends are french vanillas, and were originally vanillas. Hero Protagonist originally was just a 4/4 for example, but I gave him rampage so he would have some synergy with Erik Wartooth. Others I couldn't find replaceable art.Kondak remains the last true vanilla legend in the set, that inspired the set. He's a testament to the design that evolved from it. He did get the knight creature type when I updated the creatures, so that is a benefit of sorts.
>>97553343Rocket Launcher was a very unusual case (compare it to Alladin's Ring or Rod of Ruin). Strong sure. It even had a foil in the set (which ironically was unplayable).
>>97553343I'll sleep on it. Thank you for all the feedback anon!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1aTrqBO-M2Jc-Xsi2cV6kBRoxwY1seJHB/viewHere is the whole set. I included the MSE files as well. Print them, play with them, add them to your cubes. Thank you everyone for your help.
>>97555461requested access, thank you for the hard work. getting back into magic recently I kinda find myself not as interested by all the new sets. This one gets my 10 year old self in '96 excited again
>>97555509I thought it was public?
>>97555509approved, enjoy anon! I'll hopefully have the next expansion finished next year. It's called Dreams.
>>97555461Very cool project, thanks for putting it together.
>>97555850Thanks anon. It feels nice to finally say 'its done' and move on.
Going to periodically bump with cards that didn't make it in, or are going to be in the expansions
>>97555461Thanks, anon. This is sexy stuff. Good project, glad to see someone mourning the soul magic used to have.
>>97557674Thanks man! I hope you play with them and have a good time.
>>97553236once only during the upkeep might be good.
>>97558211>>97555461Sadly the set been finalized.
>>97527046This should be reworded, something like >>97553269Personally I would have worded it like this:>As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice an aura.>Return target aura from your graveyard, and attach it to a creature that lost an aura this turnWhile this would make the card much more clear and easy to read, it would loose some of its intended use (you could in this case attach the returned aura to any creature that lost its aura)Alternatively, to keep more in line with old magic wording:>As an additional cost to play Dress Change, sacrifice an aura.
>>97558268Yeah, lots of different suggestions with that much. I like your suggestion however.
>>97539500This should probably be "a creature of target opponent's choice they control"
>>97560585It's literally the Oracle text of Arena
