Welcome to the Second Edition General, the thread dedicated to D&D 2E and its newer offshoots/retroclones (Alternity, Hackmaster, Myth and Magic, For Gold and Glory, etc). Other editions (OD&D, AD&D, B/X, ACKS, etc) should be discussed elsewhere.Broadly, 2E games encourage campaigns structured around character identity and narrative continuity. Less emphasis on the dungeon as the primary engine of play and greater emphasis on scenario-driven adventures and long-term story development. If you are new to the 2EG, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about: we'll be happy to help you get started. And for the love of god, please don't shitpost this new thread to bits. Nobody wants that.
The first thread went really well with tons of 2E discussion, so much of it that we quickly outpaced the OSR general! Great job guys and thanks for loving 2E so much!
>troll threadIf you actually love 2e and want to discuss it, don't let the trolls who are trying to corrupt the /osrg/ turn it into just what is BrOSR approved. Discuss it there.
>>97535840Most of that discussion was just people explaining how it was an OSR game while one guy tried to get everyone to submit to his definition of OSR as "everything not 2e".
>>97535840>>97535856>>97535862Great, fantastic, beautiful, lovely, now can you please fuck off about muh OSR and talk about 2e instead?
>no link to the previous threadLol are you THAT embarassed by what people were saying about you and how wrong you are about 2e?>>97523615I'm guessing you weren't expecting so many people to come out and explain to you what 2e is actually about and how your false dichotomy is complete bullshit.
>>97535877I can already talk about 2e in the /osrg/. No reason at all to do it in someone's troll thread, especially if the idea is you want to avoid the trolls in the /osrg/. They're the ones who are gonna try to keep bumping this thread, just like the last time they made a /2eg/ just to try and split the /osrg/.
>>97535877If you really love 2e so much, don't support the efforts of a troll who hates 2e. But, I think you're just that troll.Make threee posts about 2e in the /osrg/ and I'll believe you love 2e.
>>97535814This is a troll thread nade in bad faith by trollcow, a notorius troll who has been trying to hijack the /osrg/ to exclude 2e and games like shadowdark due to his personal grudge. He was thoroughly whooped in his last attempt at this thread at >>97523615 Ignore his trolling, 2e is an OSR game that belongs in /osrg/
>>97535862Why is even a question of its OSR or not? It's pre-WotC. It's old skool. Even C&C is an OSR game, and it came out after WotC and has got d20 stuff.
>>97535927see >>97535913Trollcow tries to push the narrative that 2e is "not osr" because it's not part of the games "first decade" and that ONLY D&D content from 1974-1983 is "Oldschool" (which is a highly inaccurate definition, mainly because there's so much more oldschool content after it, and the "First decade" has MANY pieces of material that fall outside of the common OSR style into the "Trad" camp, see Ravenloft & pharaoh)
>>97535927>old skoolFuck that's a nostalgia bomb.
>>97535927and this is why 2E can't be allowed in /osrg/. fishfag avoided addressing this argument desperately because he himself knows that by his definition of OSR, any game from that era can be considered OSR. CoC? OSR. Classic Traveller? OSR. WHFRP 1E? OSR. If OSR isn't strictly confined to Gygaxian D&D, than it may as well mean nothing at all.
>>97535958when the guy shitting up the /osrg/ (and possibly his buddies if they exist?) fuck off finally, we can return to a proper thread. i've got plans to even make some OC with the /osrg/ when that happens, namely a 9x9 square minidungeon challenge (each anon makes a floor that must be 9x9 squares in size and has to fit all their rooms into it)
>>97535963>any game from that era can be considered OSROnce again misrepresenting people, Trollcow.*Nobody* but (You) is pushing the slippery slope fallacy or believes that Traveller or WFRP is OSR. Everyone knows that it is about pre third edition D&D. Your arguments are not grounded in reality Or reason mainly because you're desperate to label everyone as a strawman to discredit them
OKAY SO LET'S ACTUALLY TALK 2ESo according to the PHB, the main way to generate stats is 3d6 straight down. Other methods are suggested, though. The one that intrigues me most is the sort of weird point buy/rolling hybrid of Method VI>Method VI: This method can be used if you want to create a specific type of character. It does not guarantee that you will get the character you want, but it will improve your chances. Each ability starts with a score of 8. Then roll seven dice. These dice can be added to your character's abilities as you wish. All the points on a die must be added to the same ability score. For example, if a 6 is rolled on one die, all 6 points must be assigned to one ability. You can add as many dice as you want to any ability, but no ability score can exceed 18 points. If you cannot make an 18 by exact count on the dice, you cannot have an 18 score. Anyone have any experience with it?
>>97535975You should go to the /osrg/, that is where you are meant to talk about 2e.
>>97535979I honestly can't even tell anymore.
>>97535970and yet you spend dozens of post trying to convince people that OSR is about how you play games, not the game itself, and that any game with dungeon crawling is OSR
>>97535986Blame >>97535989He is the one causing this
>>97535989>OSR is about how you play games, not the game itself, and that any game with dungeon crawling is OSRMaking stuff up i see. Nobody thinks any dungeon crawling game is OSR, leiple think D&D iterations before third edition are OSR.
Excusing whatever retarded slapfight you guys have going on here, does anyone have any recommendations for good adventures for a Dark Sun game? I'm thinking of running 2e for the first time since I was a teenager, and I remember the actual tie-in adventures for the setting being railroady bullshit.
>>97536043you realize we can just go into the archive and see that you're lying, right?https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/97523615/#97527122https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/97523615/#97527445https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/97523615/#97527569a quote from you "D&D editions can all be used to run all of the exact same type of game. And that the difference is about you and what you want to do, and not about the game. You want to claim that "OSR is different" and when pressed to provide evidence of those differences, the ONLY thing you can back it up with is "well I like how this one does it better." Do you understand, yet? The games aren't OSR. What you want to do with them is. ">"The games aren't OSR. What you want to do with them is."https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/97523615/#97527380
>>97536050See >>97535913 if you want context on what is happeningFirstly, you should go to /osrg/, its where 2e is meant to be discussed.Secondly, use this https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/433340/shadowsun-a-shadowdark-settingIt's Dark Sun with the serial numbers filed off made by one of the OSR's best creators.
>>97535964That's something to look forward to.Really wish this drama would just end and the /osrg/ returned to being fun.
>>97536105>a quote from youNever said it, and whichever anon did is wrong. shocking that everyone who disagrees with you is more than one person, trollcow.OSR is about editions of D&D before third edition.
>>97536111>Really wish this drama would just end and the /osrg/ returned to being fun.Me too man. IDK when trollcow will eventually fuck off, but we can only hope soon. He has been at this since october of last year.
>>97536112nope. OSR is about Gygaxian D&D.
>>97536106I'm not looking for a way to run Dark Sun in a system that isn't AD&D 2e, I'm looking for good pre-made modules for that work for the setting
>>97536126>OSR is about Gygaxian D&D.Partially, yes. As a whole? No. Go back to K&KA and it's remaining 1d4 users, Trollcow.
>>97536127>I'm not looking for a way to run Dark Sun in a system that isn't AD&D 2eYou don't have to, i'm suggesting you use Shadowsun as a resource to make a sandbox easier on you. it's got a huge amount of content to help you run it better.Module wise, any lost city/underground ruin will do. Lost city, dwellers of the forbidden city etc.
>>97536050Firstly this >>97536106Secondly, Merchant House of Amketch comes with some nice variety of stuff to do. A little light as far as adventures go, but I think that's better than the starter adventure A Little Knowledge that wants everyone to know how bleak everything is right from the start.
>>97535963Can you fuck off?>if you include 2e, that means people will eventually include... CoC!What? No. You could just as easily say>if you exclude 2e, that means people will eventually exclude... 1e!
>>97536131Oh, like tables and shit? Alright, that's cool, I'll give it a look.Dwellers is a bit too jungle heavy for the sort of desert survival shit I have in mind. I hadn't considered The Lost City, but that's actually kind of perfect the more I think of it. Buried weird civilizations, opening with taking shelter from the desert. Good call. Know any stuff that sticks closer to the surface?
>>97536138Bit skeptical on this one, since, again, all the official Dark Sun adventures I read were kind of shit. What makes this one stand out above the rest?
