In most fantasy RPGs, a baseline elf is superior to a baseline human. This is likely due to Tolkien's influence. Isn't it about time we broke this mold and did something more interesting with elves?

>In most fantasy RPGs, a baseline elf is superior to a baseline human
No, they are not. They are, in most cases, balanced to humans and other races. NARRATIVELY it may be a different matter, but a standard elf PC is as powerful as a standard human PC (let's not talk about "builds").
>and did something more interesting with elves?
Nigga what, actually mechanically superior elves are something unique. Barely any system does this.
And /tg/ has been trying to do something "interesting" with elves for ages, and it's always garbage.
Originality in itself is not a virtue. Execution matters more. Genuine tolkienesque elves are rare.

Dragon Age tried this.

They even made it so they lost their lifespans and everything I think.

>In most fantasy RPGs, a baseline elf is superior to a baseline human
I'd say at least in GURPS they are.
>>
>>97544331
an elf and a human with the same bonuses cost exactly the same points in GURPS , there's no free elf points.
>>
>>97544372
Yeah but at base it's like 70 pts higher.
>>
>>97543923
So then do something with your elves that interests you, you fucking useless retard.

what about making them into hot girls that wear revealing outfits?

OK. What gripes specifically you have with them, in which systems (multiple, since you're saying "most RPGs", starting with modern D&D for easy mode), and what do you propose to do with them? What stat and setting changes would you like to see?

Or you can just disappear and leave yet another shitty spamthread like 2354 times before. Your choice.

Sadly no, in most fantasy RPGs elves have some weird shit in their background that curses them, and are nothing like Tolkien's elves.
Tolkien's elves were like an early prototype for man, perfect and almost immortal with some dubious reincarnation trick and a special physical heaven. This stuff is all awesome and way too cool, and that's what people usually want when they pick an elf.

The thing is, Tolkien spent a lifetime building a world where elves make sense- and even there they only mostly do, several steps require archangels or God himself to show up.

Dumping an immortal perfect-race into your game world is going to change its shape. You're going to have consider how and why there are elves, and the more correct your elves are, the more work you have to do. If you don't have the Christian God thinking "hey these elves are great, but I want to make something with a bolder soul, even if that means they get less than a century normally", then most other races are just shittier elves.

Anyway, most RPG elves are weird knockoffs with retard origin stories. World of Warcraft decided to make them degenerate trolls, and took the actual elves everyone wanted (the high elves), deleted them, and made it so your best bet was a blood elf- which was a degenerate high elf, which was a degenerate night elf, which was a degenerate troll. This was a very hostile lore bit.

D&D has constantly nerfed elven lifespan, and nibbles at the other side by making adult elves less than 100 basically special needs emotional weirdos who don't have their shit together, and most settings give them a background where they get up to some metal but wicked shit.

Anyway, the more a setting and a game tries to give us generic Tolkien elves, versus coming up with something that is simply inspired by drawings, the more I respect it. We don't need to break the mold; we need a more perfect version of it.

>no one knows what elves are
>the gods don't speak to them, or about them
>body and soul seems to be one thing, any soul affecting magic gets weird with them
>leading theory is that they're some sort of step between fae and humans
>they don't give birth
>as they get old they very slowly become tree-like, stiff and hard
>when they die they fully turn into trees within days or weeks, and these trees give fruit only once
>these fruits, often dozens at a time, mature and birth elven babies
>elves fiercely defend their forests because it contains their ancestors, who are still alive as trees, and unborn elven fruit
>great warriors because retreat isn't an option
>they believe the trees will turn back to elves once the world is reborn
>they don't like to venture far due to the risk of dying and birthing babies into the wild
>so mostly it's rebellious teenager elves and those with a serious mission who leave, giving them their fame of being either little bitches or overly serious no fun allowed
>they're allergic to metal, so despite their advanced arcane and scientific knowledge, their technology struggles to advance and they're falling behind
>they mostly use enchanted bone and stone weaponry and early samurai like armor of hardwood plates and layered cloth
Essentially the same guys as traditional fantasy and hitting all the tropes, but not overpowered and with a reason to be how they are
Thoughts?

Almost sounds more like the original elves from Germanic lore
>>
Just make elves more fae-like, and less human. The more human they are, the less they make sense.

>>97544821

Yeah, Tolkien-style elves are just too intimately linked to Middle-Earth and Arda to make sense anywhere else.

Children of Oberon and Titania who rebelled against the Mad Queen Mab's tyranny over the Fair Folk.
>>
Maybe it is time to throw away elves entirely.

This is a very solid way of implementing any fey creature that is actually a creature with solid nature ties. It's very nice, but I'm sure you can see one of the bigger differences between Tolkien elves and your guys- they are a pretty different order of life, because they don't give birth. These elves are biologically sexless; overlaying human sexuality on them is some kind of weird metastatement. The elves in Tolkien have normal heterosexual relations for normal heterosexual reasons, and they have masculine and feminine features for the exact same reasons humans do. Your elves wouldn't have that unless they were built that way by a god or a wizard, or unless they are busy aping the animal world by pretending to be men or women.

Anyway it's a very cool fey race you have there, and if you say its elves I bet that will work great.

If you want a different thing, make a different thing. Don't take existing thing, make it different, then call it by pre-existing thing's name.

The guys distinguishing feature is to lack imagination and the shallowness of his thread starters shows it
