Do your characters ever hit a language barrier while traveling the world? How do they handle it?
>>97554820No, I like to play games, but thanks for asking.
Nigger even D&D has mechanics to resolve language barriers. KYS.
>>97554820By learning several languages and not being an American.
>>97554820Rarely because my players aren't as spergy about languages as I am
>>97554820I made a language tree for a campaign with >same language, word for word understanding >closely related language, general understanding>distantly related language, rough understanding, likely errors >no relation, no understanding that was fun for a fantasy renaissance european wars of religion vibe. The party could usually figure out close enough but sometimes there were gaps. It was clunkier than I wanted it to be at first and I sometimes forgot about it but I think it worked decently. Other games I don't bother. Depends on the vibes.
>>97554820>Do your characters ever hit a language barrier while traveling the world? All the time.>D&Deach race speaks their own language, so if the party doesn't understand orc or goblin for example, they can't interrogate prisoners, they can't understand enemy writing (and trap/monster warnings on the walls)Honestly, I can't imagine running a fantasy game and having drows, orcs, devils and goblins just speaking common.>GURPS ActionMy current campaign. The enemies of the first adventure where ex-soviet soldiers (campaign is set in 1981), so if one of the player hadn't spent 2 points to start with russian as a secondary language they wouldn't have been able to interrogate them to find out the location of a hidden stash.
>>97555603>not using the languages as skills optional rule 3e styleXAXAXA
>>97554820I tried this once in a campaign and I don't think it added anything to it. The players just constantly tried to circumvent it through linguistic rolls or having the characters randomly do things and gauge reactions. It wasn't a good addition, so I avoid having it be an issue.
>>97554820>do they handle it?Via shooting OP in the head
>>97554820The wizard casts 'Tongues' spell, the next character to level up takes the language as a skill, or we look for an NPC who can act as an interpreter
Warhammer Fantasy rpg has a translator career specifically designed for globe trotting parties.
>>97555631Which GURPS book (assuming) is this from?
>>97556879Colorless Green Ideas Sleep Furiously (Pyramid vol. 3 iss. 44)
>>97554820I have never had language barriers be *fun* in a game, except for when my PC semi-retired by adopting a nonverbal autistic writing savant, and he>understood words>could write, but didn't write sentences, just labelled things and you had intuit>needed to be taught written wordsgood dad mode semi-retirement for my scholarly viking tbdesu
>>97555379In game dumbass. Also, quit acting like Europe speak every language. Most of you fuckers only know one too. Maybe ask for the "bathroom and how much for this."
>>97554820so far violence has been understood quite universally
>>97558796"Hey. Saying the words 'beer' and 'bathroom' in 5 languages means I am fluent in 5 languages."-- Literally every single bucktoothed, European hick
>>97558970"Don't forget, come fuck my wife and or kids" in Arabic. Europeans had to learn that or they get arrested for hate speech.
>>97558989Seething shartoid
>>97554820Just that one encounter in Kingmaker with the boggard. You know that one right? You've played games?
