What are the biggest open secrets in your game? Any conspiracies that turned out to be true? What's the cost for nooticing?
I'm running an Over The Edge game soon (trust), so I need juicy secrets to hide in plain sight

I like SotDLs one. Satan is actually God and he created the cult of the One God in order to fight against the Demon Lord and his various other fey and undead enemies.

The secret ruler of one city is a vampire, and the mayor is under her control.
Nobody likes the mayor.

Unknown Armies: Truth has many doors, Ed Boy.

the truth of the setting is every single meaning of its tagline
>You Did It
those simple words hide the fact that reality works how we think it works, right down to the fact that superstitions are true but fall apart under scrutiny, that science works but blurs at the edges of perception when people aren't paying attention or believe we can't know, that human archetypes are metaphysically reinforced by human belief in those archetypes, and that above it all those archetypes of human life run the cosmos, the ascended Invisible Clergy, unable to touch the world but able to influence it from the Statosphere. Going Up is the goal of some, while a very few who know of the place and have aligned themselves to an archetype actively fight against their own ascension, wanting to stay on earth where they can do things instead of becoming godlike but detached and inhuman, where the Man would be whittled away from them until nothing but the Archetype remained.
and with all of that, cabals of those who understand some of this work magic or walk the paths of their archetypes, others do that without understanding it and doing it by instinct. Others keep the secret, putting down any who understand, because do you know what would happen if the masses knew that magick exists?
Let me paint a picture using the favored metaphor of The Sleepers themselves.
You're a mage. A Duke. You have incredible power, pretend that power is a gun. Another guy also has that power. You hate him, he hates you. You are locked in a room together. You share one gun but both have a pocket full of bullets. On the floor of this room, sleeping, is a Tiger. That sleeping tiger is Every Normal Person. If you shoot the guy you hate, the Tiger will wake up and kill you both, and it probably won't stop there. Your buddy who comes to see what all the noise is, is next.
Don't wake the Tiger.
Hush Hush.

>What are the biggest open secrets in your game?
The biggest open secret at my table is that we're not playing next week. Everybody put on smiles and said they're committed, but half the party is going to blow off the session 24 hours before it starts, and the campaign is going to end because we're in a scheduling death spiral. That's the secret everybody in my game keeps from each other: everyone who says they're passionate about playing in a TTRPG actually just treats it like a drop in, drop out video game and it's fucking over.

It's a magic realm and I have a thing for East Asian chicks.

This is pretty sad.

Mine is I've been soft excluded from playing games with my friends via "scheduling" conflicts. Every time I schedule play time everyone takes days to respond to say they are busy. Every time someone else schedules a day everyone rsvps within the hour. All my friends keep telling me how they really want to get a game in with me too.
I haven't played a game in two years.

Playing with women
>running a murder mistery campaign
>4 people missing, one dead
>barely any clues and layers upon layers of indirect evidence
>players figure out who the culprit is in the first hour of session 1

>running an evil campaign
>attach a Szarkai (albino dark elf) NPC that occasionally works with the party
>describe her as openly evil, conspiratorial, narcissist and murderous backstabbing bitch
>campaign lasts 2 years
>I'm juggling too much NPCs...good thing I have a very obvious tool for wiping the slate clean
>Szarkai kills some other NPC
>"NOOOOOOOOO HOW COULD SHE DO THAT?"
>"WHAT THE FUCK DM, THIS MAKES NO SENSE"

The bigger secret (or truth) is that ultimately no ones know for sure what's beyond the curtain. The more you delve into esoteric knowledge the more paths open in fron of you, each leading to different (and substantiated) conclusions through different assumptions and biases. You'll find multiple cosmological models, creation myths, overgod(s), etc... all of which make actual sense and yet are off by something, especially when each truth gets put one against another.
Most sages and cultists just stick to their circles assumptions plainly ignoring contradictions and the ones who don't are either misinterpreted or treated as mad.

The leader of the lunar rebellion the player characters had been talking with over the phone (complete with 3-second message turnaround time between earth & moon due to radio speed across that distance)...

...was actually just an AI running locally inside their hacked phones (the "3-second delay" conveniently provided said AI with a nice time buffer to crush math during before replying)...

...itself a double-agent as face of the rebellion posing perfidiously and puppeteering the player characters as pawns on behalf of the megacorporate lunar authorities in their bid to ruthlessly crush the rebellion itself through a false flag binary poison attack on the lunar elite through gourmet food being shipped out of the spaceport in the player characters' city.

Following the foiled attack (think of the children), Megacorporate enforcement on the moon goes full send. Practically overnight the entire lunar rebellion is arrested & executed* (*:a later adventure which never ran would've had certain lunar rebels who had instead survived... somehow).

Megacorporate lunar control now absolute, terrestrial prices on lunar resources such as low-g fabricated goods should become more affordable, thanks to judicious labor management trimming costs (cheap qol, robots, et al).

I ran this game over a decade ago.

Sometimes, when players see a character that they like, they overlook their flaws. It's really bizarre behavior, how they will just choose to think against what you put in front of them.

Sometimes, they're stupid because they're horny though. The stories about people who misunderstand Strahd because "sad vampire daddy" are probably exaggerated in terms of frequency, but are still too many in number.

Say you absolutely can't play for the next month (choose a next month you actually are free to play any day), wait for them to schedule and drop in unannounced (or announce it 5 minutes before you get there and 5 after some people already got there). Play the game, if you feel they're obviously uncomfortable with you get up and say "it's been a blast but due to some of you I don't feel like playing with this group anymore", leave and have them wonder for years who it was and how did "they" annoy you when they were the ones annoyed in first place, take away their power.

>Playing with women
My experience was mostly
>sex jokes and sex rp all the time if the chick has low self-esteem
>phone focus and no interaction if she was there because her boyfriend wanted to play
>clear protagonism if the chick was dating the GM
>becoming a healslut for a PC if the chick was interested in his player
