>you can cast mental illnesses as spells
>ADHD makes mages unable to concentrate
>BPD can be only cast on women and it lowers their intellect
>casting depression causes a per-turn chance of self-harm, with disadvantage if the character has had sex
>you have to crush SSRIs to cast higher level spells

How would you approach this?

if players target a monster with these spells, i'd abstract it all away as the "confused" or "dazed" condition and make all the spells a will save.

Both these terms are problematic, it's better to use 'likely unable to act'.

>>97559799
i don't respect that point of view.

Then play another game.
And "monster" should also be avoided, e.g. 'goblins' are not 'monsters' because of their race.

Playing 5e is already a mental illness.

When I saw the title I though it was going to be about adding sanity mechanics and ways of managing mental health in a high magic setting like D&D.

Disappointed when I actually read the post though.
Wouldn't mind a dab of CoC in D&D.

I mean, why not have some kind of sanity as Mental Hit Points? Character that loses all their sanity becomes confused, possibly permanently losing their mind if they fuck up their mental saving throws to get out of the low sanity state.

God that sounds lame.

I like how Limbus Company (video game) handles sanity.
>Sanity starts neutral
>Positive sanity gives a bonus to hit, negative sanity gives a penalty
>Sanity is gained on succeeding rolls and by certain effects, and lost by witnessing allies die and certain other effects
>At low enough sanity, lose control for a round, before stabilizing back at neutral

I mean, aside from stuff like negative coin IDs, yeah. If you were trying to replicate Limbus sanity, it'd probably be more mathematically accurate to have it tie into the advantage/disadvantage system.
The only problem is Limbus sanity is a bit more of a morale system than a sanity system. Characters panic, rather than suddenly develop a DSM condition. No, the consequences of mental corrosion induced by an ascendant scientist deity don't count.
