The most satisfying games are the ones where you have like 10 seconds left on the clock to checkmate him after successfully promoting your pawn, and he is desperately dancing around the board trying to time you out just before you get him

Reviewed a game I won earlier and realised I missed a chance to deliver checkmate with an en passant capture. I saw the move, but I thought it was just a check, not mate, so I promoted a pawn to a queen instead for an easy win. Would've been my first ever en passant checkmate too...

You can just play the game, you will just improve very slowly if at all.
If you don't enjoy learning new tactical patterns, opening ideas, or understanding endgames then no one can make you.

>Considering there is no end to the pursuit of getting better, that is a death march.
So what? I think chess is interesting and cool.

You could say the same about someone who practices guitar, they will never be the best, but they can make more sounds and play more music if they improve, and maybe they just like to play music?
>>
>>97644058
Brilliant moves aren't just really good moves, they have to be a sacrifice that significantly improves the position iirc.

What are some really bizarre openings I can play that will baffle new players? They don't have to be good or even help me towards an endgame, I'm just messing around. I don't want to study the usual sicilian, whatever, blah blah blah, and I had a little fun just playing instinctually and specifically trying to throw other players off on chess.com
Usually I hang my pieces and lose anyways, sometimes I win on time because they're so busy trying to figure out what I'm doing while I timecuck them with random bullshit "on instinct"
Basically I am not going to seriously invest in chess and am just treating it as a casual pastime a few minutes a day, but I'm willing to learn 1 or 2 bizarre openings or gambits to force other new players into a deeper understanding of the game that I myself have no ambition to reach

So anything fun/obscure but simple enough that I can theoretically learn it without actually learning the fundamentals first?

Has anyone tried some chess learning apps? If you did, which would you recommend?

I recently got into Chess through Duolingo (yes, you may laugh, it's funny to me too), which was good for me but I'm a total noob. Once I finished that I tried Lotus Chess which is all about memorizing openings; as I understand it all the very high level players memorize openings but it just isn't working for me: I can never remember them once the variations come in. What else is out there?

Chess.com only rates a move as brilliant if it's a sacrifice.

Strangely enough it seems to just hand out Great moves like candy. I have seen moves like: moving a threatened piece out of capture, moving a king out of check, advancing a pawn, or castling (none of these threatening any pieces) be awarded "Great" status. On the other hand I have seen insane tactics being given no applause at all.

This game causes addiction and there really is no point to playing it obsessively.
If you can hang with the 1300-1500s you're fashionably good at chess and should not waste your time further as social returns are diminishing from this point on.

Don't worry about your rating so much. Focus on getting better. Thinking you'll lose your rating by playing is an admission that you think you are overrated, in which case the rating you hold is false and meaningless anyway. There's no reason to try to appear better than you are.

The most satisfying games are where i play stupid fast knowing the opponent will make better moves than me but i barely hang on maybe only losing a bishop or two and my opponent is almost about to promote his pawn but as soon as he makes a queen he realizes he only has 10 seconds on the clock and i have 2 minutes and then he keeps trying to furiously attack me and i keep hiding behind my few remaining pieces giving a few ridiculous checks to his king which he desperately moves out of the way, losing most of my last remaining pieces before running my king all the way up the board to his king with premoves in the last remaining few seconds, and then hearing the satisfying timer *click* and he loses on time.

Either that or forcing stalemate when im completely losing and he has 2 queens and 2 rooks.

I once played a Russian guy, a very good long game, we each thought about our moves very deeply and they were very good moves from both of us, but as the game went on we were playing faster and faster until he had 20 seconds left on the clock and I had 5 but i was just very slightly ahead in a long endgame, he tried to play fast to win on time but I capitalized and made around 30 premoves to promote to a queen and was premoving all the way to checkmate but then ironically he lost on time cause i premoved every single move in the final endgame, i congratulated him to a close and good game and he said 'your fucking shit', i had to translate it from RUssian.

Thank you for listening to my chess memoirs.
