When the GM shows me a setting, it think of a character who has ties to that world and thus things to do in it, and then I think of a personality and skillset befitting a person who would do those things. Sometimes when envisioning this character they are a male, and sometimes they are a female, and sometimes theyre like a fucking robot or whatever.I create characters as parts of the setting to play with, and do not associate my self-identity to them, so I don't need them to resemble me and often do not want them to. Imagine how boring fiction would be if all characters were only author self-inserts.
