It's always been a problem with the alignment system and how constrictive it is with what it considers alignments and how vague the description is of those alignments it's not just D&D either but Palladium and any system dependent on characters having a alignment rather than a player chosen morality. It's just too constrictive with how one should play a character that is Lawful Good in order to remain lawful good and not have your alignment changed by the GM because you just mildly strayed from it for just one sec because of your character making a decision that falls outside that alignment or having characters that are more morally complex.

As described alignment languages aren't full languages, they're a combination of empathy, posture, certain phrases,. etc., that can communicate very simple ideas. You can't use an AL to negotiate the bridge toll you could try to use it to intimidate the troll. Basically it's like how you can recognize someone is a schizo when they say something unhinged.

Alignment change, outside of specific magical effects, is entirely at the DM's call. A DM who says "You stole bread out of desperation, chaotic neutral from now on" is That DM. Every edition has outright said it's not a straitjacket nor does it compel you to act in certain ways, it's "I rape and murder, thus I am evil", nor "I am evil, thus I rape and murder".

Why not just be completely rid of the alignment system altogether? Why even have people have to even conform to having their character fit to a alignment to begin with. Who defines what is "a little bit" when PCs make decisions in-universe that might not fall in line with the alignment on their character sheet, how many times is "a little bit" before as a GM you change the alignment of a player because they pull a coup de grace on a defeated opponent because they deem them too dangerous? The whole alignment system is ridiculous and all it does is force PCs to fit into neat boxes and enforce how characters behave in a one dimensional way. Getting rid of alignment allows PCs to create characters that are complex and may even have some contradictory beliefs and ideals instead of neat boxes.

Except the problem is that it does act like a straitjacket. Why would there even be any alignment if it didn't with lawful good, chaotic good and neutral good at all to begin with. If they weren't meant to be adhered to and played a certain way that defines what they are. There wouldn't be a alignment system otherwise and characters would create the type of characters they want who may have a lot of complex and even conflicting morals and beliefs without the need to categorize it.

Originally alignment functioned as exactly what it says on the tin.
It was your alignment, which side you aligned with in the great conflict between Law and Chaos. Similar to how your character in a game based on the 100 year war might have an alignment of Cheesy Frogman or Bad-Teef Ork.
You could still be a deep, complex character, maybe you don't truly believe, maybe you're press ganged into a side, maybe you're only in it for the dental plan, ect.

It was only once the Mormons took over circa 2e that alignment went from "This is a functional part of the games world" to "Well we gotta have alignments because alignments are part of D&D!" and the good-evil axis was added to represent both to represent how likely you were to get a handy from a bible thumping soccermom and to stave off said soccermoms from calling the game Satanic ("See, PCs are only good people, it's on their sheet!")

From Dragonlance on D&D has basically been churned out by cargo cultists rather than designers and you should no more trust their work than a mechanic who gives you a blank stare when you ask him if the oil is alright in your car.

The Good/Evil axis existed before the 1e Monster Manual was published and was cludged together with Law/Chaos by Gygax. The expect conflict was supposed to be LG vs CE with the 7 other alignment factions siding with or opposing LG and CE based on the situation. What shifted during 2e was alignment going from which of 9 teams you were on to a personality descriptor.

The main historical function of alignment is that newbies are very fun and cool players but also they tend to do really stupid shit like stab shopkeepers to steal their things because, hey, freedom! Gaming! Alignment gave you some way to remind them that their little avatar was not some antisocial GTA protagonist who went on murder sprees for fun (especially a big issue before GTA became big). It's still valuable for the newbie hole that is D&D.

Alignment languages exist in real life. The iconic one is latin in the Catholic Church. It was the universal Catholic language and Catholics could talk to each other regardless of what country or culture or race they were.

Nowadays, you just have it based on what culture you're from. Someone using 4chan lingo will get sniffed out instantly by a woke retard and vice versa, and it will provoke similar reactions.
