Imagine playing this SOCIAL activity alone.lol. That's it, not even an lmao
>>97635022>SOCIAL activityOn what basis? What other people who just "follow the leader" say? This activity is about having fun, and if it isn't fun with other people, then there's nothing wrong with playing alone.Often times, a solo game is the only way to get a game, when the alternative is just people who only want to do improv theater or collaborative storytelling.
What are your recommendations for a super hero rpg that is good for a first delve into solo play? I'd like a game that lets me make some not so serious powers while still being usefull. The only game I have experience with is Das Schwarze Auge/The Black Eye, so something less simulationist would be appreciated.
>>97635625There's a bunch of Supers RPGs on the lighter end. Prowlers & Paragons is a great standalone choice, but there's certainly others. If you want something a bit crunchier, there's Mutants & Masterminds, or SWADE with the Super Powers Companion. Alternatively, there's Masks, which is a PBTA game in the vein of Teen Titans. It doesn't offer as much creative freedom, though.

>>97638803Sometimes they're missing things. Also, I'm on the market for new stuff.
>>97638799>>97638936Most creators just put their stuff on itch and drivethruRPG, and if they got any third space they are in those stores too. You might want to occasionally check out Fanatical/Humble Bundle book bundles and Bundle of Holding if they are having any solo or solo friendly e-book deals.
trying to hone in on the system i want to run for an idea i had. the choices are HtV or SWADE w the horror companion and East Texas University. what system supports best the fantasy of being a dude stumbling into the supernatural and being forced to fight to survive, eventually becoming strong overtime through mundane tools, magic trinkets, and gained power. I'm conflicted with HtV for its deep focus on the social aspect in ttrpg and the severely punishing nature of combat.
>>97638998forgot to add: feel free to recommend other systems
>>97638799recently found solorpglist.commy approach is to pirate first to check if the book isn't crap (google and scribd, pdfcoffee, anyflip), if it's going to stick with me, then eventually get the paid copy to support the author (and have it neatly organized in itch or drivethrough library). but honestly, stop chasing the perfect system, and just play the goddamn things you already have.

I'm curious, are there alternatives to Mythic GM emulator and oracles in general. Like a different method to play?

A while ago, I made a video of a Solo RPG session actual play session I had, animated with AI to look like a "movie". Since the AIs have evolved a bit since then, I made the "second scene" and also added notes on what I was rolling in Mythic to get each result.Unfortunately, I won't be continuing with the rest of the scenes because it's really annoying to have to deal with copyright issues in the newer AIs, but here it is, for the record.https://youtu.be/aCQyvLMG8F0

My second Ker Nethalas character has perished. I made the terrible mistake of attempting to fight a Carnage Devourer Overseer while still level 1. Impossibly, he somehow actually succeeded in killing it despite absorbing 64 damage from the thing. He survived with a single Health left. He patched himself up a bit and was promptly attacked while trying to rest. By a monster who happened to be able to bypass Toughness and damage Health. RIP Teel. Here's the progress he made in the Charnel Pits.

>>97695343For Ker Nethalas it just uses a d100 room chart. I take a lot of creative liberties when using it. Its got room and corridor descriptions you can use but they're just flavor. The mechanical parts of the dungeon are the resources spent and scavenged when moving from room to room, where you can go, as well as locked doors and traps. Its not really a roleplaying game unless you want it to be. More like a megadungeon board game in a book. Though there are plans in the works to expand it into a full RPG soonish.
Anons, I wanna to know, is there an IA or something to play solo ttrpgs? Do any of you have some experience with it? Which one are the best ones? (Free, of course)I like the idea of playing solo, but when it comes to it I'm just sitting still without no clue of how to start. Plus I'm a lazy fuck so if I can find an IA that can make as a DM for the games I want to try and I don't have people to play with, would be a blessing.
>>97699236>IAIA?
>>97699249My bad, I wanted to say AI
>>97699260Not really, they're not clever enough to. If you want to do it best thing to do is rawdog it.Pick a system, grab Mythic and just roll a campaign idea you've always wanted to do.Or if you don't know what system to try, check out Ironsworn, that's a good, simple system to get into.
>>97699268Well, damn...Actually, I wanna know, are there systems for solo play that are similar to games like Delta Green, Wod, or DnD-esque?
>>97699287>are there systems for solo play that are similar to games like Delta Green, Wod, or DnD-esque?I mean with Mythic you can run any system, it's basically a DM emulator.Reason I'd advise against AI is because it'll forget details, you, anon I have never met, are far more creative and will remember details far better than any AI could.Just to check, for D&D, how do you mean D&D-esq since Ironsworn hits a fantasy itch but isn't what I'd consider a D&D-a-like game.Because it's honestly better than modern D&D.
>>97699302With what i've read from Ironsworn yeah, it does have fantasy elements but it's not only leaning too much on their world and setting, but is really more viking-codedWhen I talk about DnD I think more about medieval fantasy, jousts, dragons... You know what I mean?
>>97699433>viking-codedThe base setting is but it's pretty hackable. I've used it to do an arabian nights setting myself.Basically as long as your setting is one where your characters word matters and civilization is a bit sparse it can still work really well. Post-black death fantasy Europe or something similar would hit it nicely. If you do want to go for D&D then yeah, grab mythic DM emulator and maybe check out a few youtube videos on how to use it.Or, if you prefer more old style OSR-y systems then there's one called "Scarlet Heroes" which comes with its own setting but could easily be retrofitted for medieval fantasy.Hope that helps.
>>97699463It does! Thank you so much anon, I'll try to look them both and one of these days I'll give it a run.
>>97699488>one of these days I'll give it a run.Best advice I can give?Just go for it. Don't overthink it, don't delay it, just box off an hour or two, sit down, grab the dice and dive in.One of these days is never as soon as it should be.

>>97699488This guy has the right of it>>97699497Getting started is by far the hardest part. In fact I highly recommend skipping over any slow starts you may be planning and have thing start happening IMMEDIATELY. You dont even need to roleplay at first. Just get the ball rolling.
>>97697238I use the system from 2d6 dungeon. It's worked well enough for me, if it does generate somewhat plain dungeons
Ran a solo session for the first time, using Loner at a friend's suggestion. It ended up being too light for me i think, though. Next time I'll probably run one of my own systems* or something i just enjoy like dcc along with mythic and une.Tldr on the session: protag started off chasing down a villainess in a town, only to get her ass kicked. They later uncovered some info on the villainess's overall plot and tracked her down. She won MULTIPLE little scuffles in the process, but got overconfident in trying to convince the villainess's minions to desert and got tied up to be used in the group's visual. I left it off there*I'm planning a supplement book to one of my shitbrew games, with solo rules included in with all sorts of other stuff. What kind of things do yall want to have when running a solo game (besides stuff the oracle can handle)? Currently ive got stuff to build the NPCs randomly (the system uses freeform traits so i went with tying things to different actions which in turn would have different traits associated), rolls to determine level, disposition to you, and how likely they are to show up
>>97697238>For Ker Nethalas it just uses a d100 room chart.Isn't that the same idea used in Four Against Darkness? Also, you guys didn't tell me they released an expanded edition of Four Against Darkness.>https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/550549/four-against-darkness-expanded-edition>>97699236I think the best you can do is appropriate generic AI tools, such as text/prompt generators for generating plot ideas or brainstorming specific ideas, and image generators for creating character portraits or images of specific locations. The latter option is what I'm doing, generating portraits for my PCs. Technically, yes, there are AIs made for roleplaying, but from my personal experience, those derail easily, forgetting important details.
>>97701563>an expanded edition of Four Against Darkness.yeah, they made it nicer. enemies get scaled according to the highest character level in your party, new classes, biomes, enemies, spells. the core loop is still the same, so if you're burned out on procedural dungeon crawls, it won't fix that. it scratches the same itch as the previous edition, they kept it simple with no bloat. i'd consider it more of a "deluxe" edition
Mr. Star Trek anon, what are the most useful STA supplements for solo role-playing? Maybe with procedures/tables or other interesting things.
Been trying to play some sort of modern/progression fantasy with my own frankenstein system. Ironically for something inspired by litRPG and stuff like that, it's mostly narative and low crunch. So far:> 5 young people wake up somewhere they don't know, with only a grey jumpsuit and sandals to their names> The voice of a woman they don't know comes from nowhere> "Congratulation on your awakening! You must hurry, reach the Perpendicularity, go towards the light. You must reach it at whatever cost. Use your Innate Ability to overcome the obstacles."> After walking on their own for a day or two, they meet and join forces> My character: Rock, a geek kid who can now violently throw stuff with his mind> Warren, a badass soldier from the City-state of Warsaw who clearly knows what's up with "the experiment", and wants to take revenge on his officers. Now he can affect and steal certain passive abilities from people and monsters that he kills> (maybe I should have picked him as my character? Or keep him as a future bad guy?)> Kendra, a priestess from another world who wants to find her holy symbol that wasn't with her when she woke up. Now she can strengthen other's active abilities. > After a fight with a few mutants (what happens to those who didn't "awake") They reach a camp made up of wooden structures and shipping containers where they meet two girls> Avelline, a lost girl from Warsaw. She hears voices and know when people lie, but she doesn't tell them any of that> Kyara, a very young and very tallented surgeon (who 's very smug about it). She's got two abilities, an active one that "anesthetize" a creature and a passive one that give her perfect motor control (probably had it from birth, explaining why she's a top surgeon despite being in her twenties)
>>97702227> Then they gear up with some military gear (light armor) and weird swords, a spear and a shield (magical. I used some OSE tables to get some magic items. Narratively, I'm not sure how it got there, maybe the culprits came here to clear the place before their experiment?)> They continue on and chat a bit more, they finally clear out some important stuff, Warren, Kyara and Avelline come from the undead besieged city-state of Warsaw in the year 2053, a few decades after monsters started appearing on earth> Kendra is not from earth, but there's been monsters in her world since before she was born, with only the Saints keeping humanity from disappearing> Rock just comes from earth in the 201X, and doesn't take the news very well, but he doesn't fully believe it for now> They follow a trail toward the light, kill some more mutants> And by the end of the 5th day, as they are about to reach the light, a boss fight blocks there way> I had an idea for a giant snake with a human head, so I went with it and rolled for abilities, so he was controlling plants and weak to insects> So it snuck up on them, attacked from multiple sides, grabbed a girl, but stupidly pulled her to itself, then Warren, Kyara and Rock charged it.> Warren and Kyara have seen actual monsters before being taken, but not Rock, so he froze and got hit> Kyara used her anesthetic power to slow the monster and fights off it's vines helped by her passive ability> Warren closes in, blocks the monster's bite with his shield and starts hacking at it> Rock gets up and frees Kendra, but the vines that held her then rush towards Warren's back who had to leave his shield in the monster's mouth but still got smacked> Kyara's still slowing the monster with her ability and holding off multiple vines> Kendra grabs Rock's arm to boost his power, he aims his sword at the beast and let it go right through it's face, dealing the killing blow
>>97702227>>97702234He gave my characters a decent fight despite the deceiving 9HP and 1 armor. I mostly made him threatening via the narrative, sneaking up on them, launching attacks from multiple sides, grabbing someone, forcing a roll to even be able to face it...And now I'm a bit stuck, they to the light, then what? Do they get randomly thrown in post-apo Warsaw? In the kidnappers' lab? Somewhere else? I think I'm done with hex crawl for now, so maybe city adventure?
I finally did it!I won Dungeons and Dragons!>using the 3LBB, Chainmail with some houserules and Outdoor Survival>Mythic 1st edition as my main solo tool and lots of random tables, some made as I played (small d4 to d20 tables depending on inspiration)>start as a simple fighting-man>4 years later irl (about 25 years game time) I'm a King with a powerful army>last battle is me, some units and civilians holed up in a small castle at the limit of my Kingdom>I only play that battle and use Mythic to determine the results of the other battles going on >I managed to inspire the civilians to take arms so they can die free instead of slave to Bartow, the asshole King trying to take over my lands>it helped that I was known for stopping an invasion 2 years prior (real time) with a very small number of units>battle is going to hell, it's finally the end of my PC, I think>Random Event>a few clarifying questions later and we get reinforcements from another King I was trying to get as an ally before we got attacked>we also get a few dragons I had fought and won against with my army, when we were looking for the best place to create our first settlement when expanding our territory, showing up to help (Extreme result)>Dragons are very honor-bound in my setting, so being defeated means they owe something to the victor. No better way to pay that dept than saving us. Mythic just made it possible for them to have heard about our battle in time to show up>enemy runs the fuck away>later they decide they can't beat both of us, even without the dragons who have paid their debt and are gone, so they accept a peace treatyAnd this is how a simple teen from an unknown village became the one to unify the realm into an era of peace and prosperity.Next, I'm going to Old Man Henderson Call of Cthulhu.

Is there a recommended solo system or approach for Delta Green? Or should I just use DG + Mythic GME?Thanks in advance
I am slowly going insane searching for my perfect system for solo play. I tend to prefer having only a single character, but I'm quickly realizing that's probably not going to be feasible unless I'm sticking to purely solo designed games, which tend to either be extremely narrative focused or somewhat limited in scope.I first actually tried solo games with Starforged and Ironsworn, which I found incredible in concept and thought they were perfect for me. But I continuously bounced off of them as I wandered aimlessly and eventually ran out of steam. Things first clicked when I tried Ker Nethalas. The heavily structured gameplay loop of the game kept me focused and showed me how fun a straightforward randomly generated dungeon crawl could be. Unfortunately, being a purely mechanical game, the dungeons are basically just set dressing. The gameplay loop is fun, but there's almost no impactful choices to make. The game basically plays itself with me just rolling dice to see what happens next. It's cool and it works, but it got to the point where half of the fun I was having was flavoring the dungeon around me as I explored. So now I'm stuck. I've probably read like ten different systems in the past two weeks trying to pick the right one. Whatever I choose, it's gotta do dungeon crawls well. I plan on using a mish-mash of various random generators I've discovered to help make dungeons as I go. Still looking for things to help with overland generation and quests. I'm still completely undecided on system choice. The combat system of Mythras has really stood out to me so far, but Im pondering just choosing something compatible with OSR just for the sheer amount of content available for them. Knave has some really neat tables in it, but I know OSR style games just dont work well without a full party, and doing that all by myself frankly sounds like a pain.I dont know. I'm just blogposting. Anyone suggest some good generators for hexes or quests and whatnot?
>>97713642Import the fray dice for combat from scarlet heroes into any OSR game and you have a more viable solo hero. If you want even more survivability you can also port the hit dice mechanic as well
>>97713930That is a good idea. I had forgotten about Scarlet Heroes. I'll definitely keep that idea in mind as I experiment.
>>97711471Hmm, that could work. Thanks, anon
>>97713642In addition to mentioned Scarlet Heroes, Tales of Argosa also has a decent lone character option and is a tad more complex OSR implementation than SH is.
>>97713642I know your pain, anon. I think there was someone here who mixed Ker Nathalas with another system, taking the character and dungeon portion, and adding in overworld, urban and other things. I've only skimmed the book.I tried getting into both Ironsworn and Starforged at the very beginning of the hobby, but I couldn't get it to work for me. The combat in Mythras seems really cool, and something I would have loved a few years ago, and I really like the size attribute, but it's too much for me soloing. I've been thinking of getting into BRP. I don't like systems where the (e.g.) thief-y things are locked to the thief class. I want my fighter to be able to use lockpicking without tweaking the system, so systems that either have open classes, skills that everyone can pick up is a must. When I get in the mood for darker stuff, I'm looking forward to start with Choir of Flesh. Honor+Intrigue and/or Barbarians of Lemuria could possibly work for for solo, Swade worked pretty well for me, even if I don't really want to use it anymore. Worlds/Stars/Cities/Ashes Without Number have fantastic tables, rules for solo, great skill system. But the feats, classes and bestiary is painfully plain
>>97719024I think I've finally settled on using Mythras. The combat rules are just too cool to pass up. Plus it's a classless system, and there's plenty of d100 systems that it's semi-compatable with. I'm actually planning on stealing some of the dungeon rules from Ker Nethalas for this. Especially the usage die rules for Tension where rolling a 1 or 2 reduces the die size D8->D6->D4 until you roll on a dungeon event table. It's so much smoother than the typical dungeon turns used in most crawlers. Im actually checking out Riftbreaker's overland generation from the same author to see if I like it as much as his dungeon mechanics. Some things will definitely need to be tweaked as I go, but I'm very much looking forward to having an abundance of options in combat rather than the game basically playing itself. The Mythras rules actually seem pretty intuitive to me now that I understand them properly. Opposed combat rolls, whoever wins gets to apply a special effect, or two if they crit/the other guy fumbled. Locational armor is already familiar to me from Ker Nethalas, though the locational HP has me a bit nervous. There's a bunch of rules in Mythras for handling multiple opponents, like Outmaneuvering them to make them get in their own way or just retreating into a corridor Rogue style.Still some style issues. Like in Mythras apparently a guy in full plate is pretty much objectively superior to a lightly armored fighter. Which I suppose makes sense but Im not sure how I feel about it. There's some stuff in the Classic Fantasy supplement that mitigates some of that, like class abilities and whatnot. I'm still working things out, but at some point I just gotta jump in.
>>97719024BRP is great, but if you want something lighter with d100 I would recommend looking into OpenQuest.
>>97634595Have an idea. I usually dont love meta currency, but I do sometimes think there is a in fiction rational for people to go a little beyond thier capability to eak out a success.I was thinking about every side in an engagement starts out in "cohesion" cohesion can be spent in order to preform a reroll, but the down side is that after using it for c.5 minutes, or until the party is sufficiently reordered, you all get a small debuff for getting out of formation.Basicly both my pc's side and my enemy's side has a second chance once every engagement, but at the penalty of becoming more succeptible after it is enacted.
>>97720226meta currency?
>>97719183I found the general consensus online is that, for solo play, Mythras combat has too many options that bog things down so you'd need to strip it down or use the combat options either sparingly or as the result of crits.Mind you, I've been adding all sorts of crazy shit to it because I use Mythras for one of my Wuxia style games.
>>97722347Meta currency is stuff like bennies or fate points
>>97722408So then what can you reroll when you spend cohesion?
>>97720226steal star treks momentum and threat.critical successes generate momentum, successes over and above the difficulty of tasks or tests generate momentum.likewise, critical failures generate threat and failing tasks generate threat.you can also succeed at cost by spending threat, that is, adding X threat to the pool in order to avoid instant failure etc. their are momentum spends to change things about, create advantages and likewise the DM (you) can spend threat to create complications.for example, if you are at 0 momentum, and you still want to spend some, let's say you spend 6 momentum you aint got to buy yourself 3 extra d20's for a task, that's 6 threat added to the pool that the 'bad guys' can spend on their shit too.momentum and threat. I heartily advise you to ste.. .errr aquire the STA 1e books yarr harr harr so you can at least read the mechanics for yourself and steal and incorporate them into your game if you like, instead of merely taking my fucking godawfully shithouse explanation and or word for it.
>>97722492The anon already said it offers a reroll. That's fairly self-explanatory
>>97722506Reroll what? Initiative?
>>97722509
>>97722505>steal star treks momentum and threat.>critical successes generate momentum,eh, feels a little bit too abstract to me. thats one of my main gripes with a lot of meta currencies, they seem detached from whats going on and seems like an out of fiction fiat. I much prefer something that more directly represents exhaustion, composure, cohesion, or some other real factor. My last idea was composure. Same idea, you can spend it for a reroll or boost, but after that your saves are done at -2 (but not ability checks, I like the idea that it just effects your reactive capacity, not your proactive capacity). Really only difference was that it was a character specific resource, not one per side. The problem I faced was if every enemy should also have one, which seemed like it could be a slog, but I didn't want my character to be the only one that had it. Though now that I think of it, I could give a pool of it to enemies based on their relative power. little hoard of goblins might have 1 collectively, an enemy group of Adventurers might have 3, 1 per adventurer.>>97722509anything.
>>97720226I've never really been a fan of meta currency either, mostly because in my experience, it makes things that should be represented differently in-world seem exactly the same. The thief spends his bennie on his "cunning senses", to get another die added to his moxie roll and deal 1 more wound! The warrior spends his bennie on his "ferocious smash", to get another die added to his might roll and deal 1 more wound! The mage spends his bennie on his "erupting magic", to get another die added to his mysticality roll and deal 1 more wound! These things are totally different, I swear! And they don't necessarily seem like they have an "in fiction rational", nor do they "go a little beyond thier capability to eak out a success" when mechanically-speaking, it's just an added roll or a reroll.Of course, solo gaming is great because you can do what you want, and you have the freedom to playtest what you like, but personally, I'd rather have in-game items, resources, and status conditions to provide an in-world rationale for characters to go within or beyond their capabilities to eke out a success.Maybe what the character just did makes the enemy want to prioritize attacking them, or to represent straining oneself, the character could lose a tiny bit of HP (or even sustain a minor injury for over-exertion!). It's all down to preference, but I've always liked tangible in-world effects and resources over "well you/your character did something to meet an above-game condition and now you get something that isn't really represented in the game world itself".
>>97719183That's great, are you going for the fantastical bronze age setting? >a guy in full plate is pretty much objectively superior to a lightly armored fighterI remember the weapon length is really important too, which is rarely is aside from second rank attacking, so makes sense that a lot of armour gives a lot of boons, and somewhat rear from my experienceI putting my main project on hold, and will just start a Ker Nethalas campaign instead. Haven't played it, but it seems like a good place to get/steal some ideas. I originally wanted to wait until the Gravebound edition was released, but I've mostly been reading and watching stuff about other systems
>>97722405>I found the general consensus online is that, for solo play, Mythras combat has too many options that bogs things downI just don't find that convincing. I do not find having too much cake to be a problem. I suppose I'll find out soon though. My prep is nearly complete.>>97724144>weapon lengthYeah it is. If your opponents weapon is two sizes larger than yours you cant attack them unless you manage to close range first. But once you do the shoe is on the other foot and the longer weapon can only attack with the haft of the weapon until they can create range. It seems like a pretty cool system, if it actually works properly.Ker Nethalas is a lot of fun, and Gravebound Edition is actually already released as of a few days ago, so you're good to go. I like the enemy design in it a lot.
>>97724237Some things a person must find out for themselves. Although, you could just be the right kind of autistic that it just fits; I'd like to hear how it goes when you give it a shot though.
>>97722530ok going to reroll my hp mid adventure >>97723408a reroll isn't that big of a help if you roll worse than before

>>97723408that's why i advise you to e-hem... 'acquire' the STA book and read for yourself, because momentum and threat are really great, I just can't fucking explain worth a shit.
Do you think its better to generate hexes in advance so you can work out possible relationships between areas? Or to only generate the hex you're in and possibly adjacent ones on the fly so you can be surprised by your discoveries? I can't decide which option is better.
>>97726955Logic is your friend. Generate next hexes that the PCs can see. If they are high up, that can be a lot. If they are in a forest, it may be none at all.As for relationships, use logic too. Forest to desert doesn't make much sense unless you have some plains between them. Mountain that you didn't see in the distance either, unless you were in a thick forest with a dense canopy.A for other relationships (war between two factions, disease, etc.), I would leave that to random events rolls and use logic (again) to make sense of the hexes you already explored in that context and why there was no clue in them about this new development (maybe the forest is sacred to them and they don't make war/leave guard in it. That gives you some idea about the factions. Maybe they are fighting for the possession of that forest? Maybe if you say you came/they see you coming from there they will try to kill/arrest you?).
>>97726955>>97727873Or generate in advance, but give the PC a narrative reason to know. Like a map they buy/find. You can always ask the oracle how accurate the map is. Possibilities go from getting lot to major change like a deserted/ruined settlement that was supposed to still be active.Personally, I would use a map because it's easier and I like to prep my adventures in advance. Less chances of me just quitting them that way. But that's me.
>>97727883*getting lost*There's a lot of good hex creation tools out there. A lot of them free.Something I like to do in my sci-fi games is play an explorer making maps of unknown sectors and planets as a way to make some money.
>>97713642For me, it is using hex crawl frameworks of OSR games with Prose-Descriptive Qualities. I take and mix elements of Questers of the Middle-Realms, Jaws of the Six Serpents + Serpents' Teeth and PDQ Sharp. It feels like the perfect solo game for me. I play with regular character creation rules regarding the PC, but use the simplified minion rules for most enemies, and only have 1-3 of them for most encounters.
>>97724237Oh, you're right, the pdfs are out. Hope you keep us updated on your Mythras journey>>97719213I skimmed it a few months ago, and it seems nice. But I didn't get that BRP was really that heavy, and pretty modular
>>97728673Jaws is great and underrated. It really does that sword and sorcery vibe quite well.
>>97726955I like to generate wider terrain in advance but not possible POIs and such.
>>97730399>POIshow do you generate those
>>97731729It varies. Currently just using the unofficial White Box: FMAG Solo Rules & Oracle Tables supplement.
Any good game with samurai n shit?
>>97733564Scarlet heroes is set in a oriental fantasy setting. Never played it, and while I have little interest in samurais n stuff. Legend if the five rings looked neat. Dunno how it play solo, and not kept up the the new editions

>>97724237>I just don't find that convincing. I do not find having too much cake to be a problem.NTA, but I found generally more complex systems are less satisfying to play solo then they are multi-player. A lot of those games I feel like are designed to spread the cognitive load of things across multiple people, and when there is just one it becomes a slog and I might just forget who and what the fuck I am simulating when I am on step 6 on a 10 step turn. I also find the accontability of having other people helpful when playing a complex game, more people means more people likely to notice when something has gone askew.>>97724798I kind of assumed reroll implies just in the moment action or reaction, not character sheet modifications. Also, Just because you push yourself harder doesn't mean you will necessarily succeed. though maybe reroll +2 on a d20.
>>97733363Cool, it's free to download! Thanks.
guys, i have oracle choice paralysis. i'm not talking about generators, but the usual noun/verb/theme, open-ended-question kind. there are just so many of them, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind how they were created (outside of copying Mythic and Ironsworn), or how to differentiate between the good and bad ones. like, i don't have any intuition about what a good oracle should be and what to avoid. halp
>>97734036>>97734498Thanks guys!

What's the hardest solo game, like too many rules or difficult to survive?
>>97701253I have run a session of DCC with mythic, and probably did a couple things pretty sloppily. Question for mythic users: theres a lot of little bits throughout to help out in running things, but theres so many that i glaze over them looking for other things in the book. Besides the basics of how the emulator works, what are some of the parts most important to pay attention to in the more "advice" areas? For example, I got kinda lost in the section about scene types when it comes to ending scenes. Also, I apologize if my handwriting is bad or the way i decided to handle writing things down is pretentious; i just felt proud of how i decided on formatting. Also also, is it just me or does mythic feel vaguely redundant and jank for it? Theres so many bits that tie into each other in how they work but arent the same mechanic, like the little d10 roll you do at the start of a scene or how some result tables feel kinda similar yet arent the same or used in the same contexts.
Okay ironsworn is really good and free.
>>97738655Thrikk is a terrible name
>>97738655I felt the same too when I first tried MGME, then I left it for a while and came back to use it when the 2nd edition was out. I'd say, don't give up and keep trying to absorb the paradigm, start small, for example:>use the One-Page version Only, "ask the game master" & "Discover Meaning">then you can add the 2nd edition Meaning tables instead of the One-Page's "Discover Meaning" when you feel comfy enough, >then drop the One-Page Mythic entirely, but don't jump directly into using the Fate Chart, but use the Fate Check instead. Don't use neither Threads nor Scenes yet, but give a try to Chaos factor and MGME2e random events>Later change into using the Fate Chart and threads>Then start using scenes and the whole caboodle>ETC...Check the Flow Charts in this pdf, an image is worth a 1000 words:gofile @ /d/Wsb6WVAlso, if this way of very structured gaming isn't really your thing, embrace more simpler ways without all the scaffolding and guidance, just grab any minimalist oracle and devise a way of having "random events" when rolling, for example if you use an oracle using d6, every time you roll a 1 when asking for a Yes/No do a random event! This is like 1/6 of the times, aprox 17%, with One-Page Mythic you have that around 11% of the times, the sweet spot exist in between that, around 15% I guess. They key of random events and the extra scaffolding is to keep the game interesting without you getting bored or tired of being constantly generating drama for yourself, so the solo engine does it for youAlso, check previous threads to read about other flavors besides Mythic. This thread pointed me to use OPSE, Apocalypse Oracle, D10 RUOPS, MKN oracle, MUNE, UNE, Random Realities, GEMulator, CRGE, MOTIF, etc..One that I discovered recently is d144 Idiom Portent Generator, is great as substitution for meaning tables or for random events.
>>97742837More opinion about the threads, scenes, chaos factor, characters lists, etc from MGME2e. It's a machine itself, and as such is kind of flawed at some parts, even if you get to know how to use it and even get to like it all.For example, the whole house of cards is based on you asking for the most dramatic outcome from a YES in the oracle, based on this the whole caboodle: chaos factor, scenes, random events, scene checks, etc, all of it just dulls if your style of playing is not exactly like this and you don't enjoy being railroaded with complex game loops. On the other hand, is the juice worth the squeeze? I'd say you'd get most of the same experience from just using the One-Page Yes/No oracle version (still using the random events mechanic) but pairing it with the whole set of 45 meaning tables in the big ass 2nd edition book instead of the little "Discover Meaning" table in One-Page Mythic. Just keep in mind you'll forget about some characters or situations at times, so just check your previous notes and keep those in mind because that will be the fodder for keeping things interesting and consistent.I'd say the convenience of either one or the other depends on your personality and personal preferences.
>>97735597I would be glad to help but. The preference for an oracle depends absolutely on personality and preferences. One person's trash is another person's treasure. Just try them all and go with what you like the most.
>>97713642>but I know OSR style games just dont work well without a full party,I like the way Kevin Crawford fixed this for B/X and/or the OSR gang with stuff like Scarlet Heroes and Black Streams, the solo heroes fix, like the fray die, defying death, the damage simplification mechanic, etc. Its still a kluge, but it is a very small one and quite elegant, and lets me play any TTRPG intended for a group as a single player (either with 1 single character or even I sometimes form small parties). Another thing that helps me is going for the smaller set of rules possible, I like the whole OSR ecosystem because lots of it is compatible with minimal tweak, I grab mechanics from Knave, OSE(BECMI), Cairn, Scarlet Heroes, bestiaries from OSE, Settings from other OSRs or even NuSRs. And somehow I make it work for myself, without it being a burden nor boring, if something is boring or tedious I drop it and go find some more sleek part to substitute it, I don't care for purity of ideology or the author's intent, i make my own frankenstein monster and it works.>PIC not related

The actual systems to mythic are fine for me, though the presentation of them makes it hard to ease into it. I understand how the chart (and check variant) work along with scenes wrt being expected/altered/interrupted, but havent tackled anything like the suggestions for how to start and end scenes
>>97742992>I make my own frankenstein monster and it worksI just spent the past couple days doing that. I combined Knave and Dolmenwood together. >>97634595Anyone else find AI rule summaries really helpful? I remember having to flip through a book to find a specific section or get an incomplete quick reference sheet was an absolute slog, but getting a short explanation has been a real help.
>>97634595This is a little weird buy a while ago I made a beginning adventurer in the Old World RPG system, but for some reason now I have been interested in how he might turn out in the future so I made a version of him in a different system, Barbarians of Lemuria, Where your character is assumed to have had 4 distinct life experiences. Turned into something like a medium cavalry warrior priest with a focus on information gathering.
>>97747114This is the original character.I dont know why I decided to use a different system, but I did. Maybe cause Barbarian's is a little simpler to write down a variety of life experiences in.
>>97747079you better ask it to cite its sources (page numbers included) and double-check the referenced material yourself. >blind AI query with reddit sources horrendous. worst possible usage of the tool. the problem with AI is that it can't distinguish correct vs incorrect source material when both are presented. for example, if there's an online post that mentions "rule does X" and someone else corrects them in the reply saying "rule does Y" instead, AI is frustratingly bad about sorting out between the two.
>>97747532I have literally quoted it the rulebook and page, uploaded the pdf, copy pasted the section from the pdf...only for the AI to insist that I am still wrong and that rule doesn't exist in games before.it is notorious for using reddit shit, farcebook, twatter, etc, other dens of faggotry and retardation.I once had an AI LLM try and tell me i wasn't allowed to have evil orcs in my game because that was all 'problematic' and shit. I had to spend like, 45 minutes explaining how greenskins are not niggers etc. before it begrudgingly accepted orcs being evil in ADnD ruleset.
>>97747532Well, I usually actually READ the source text first, and have used ai for referencing. If its way out of left feild I am pretty good at knowing. Not going to take the response as gospel, just as a general reference point.
>>97747638i've heard this too often at work before time-consuming embarrassments/mistakes>of course i've READ the documentation/memorandum/email, i'm just using copilot for referencing. if the mistake is obvious i would be able to tell the mistakes will be subtle and you won't catch it. think about the context in which you'd be asking AI for summary. it's usually because something is hazy or ambiguous. AI is very bad at clarifying the hazy or ambiguous.
>>97747659this. AI horror beyond comprehension will be all the nonsense that slips past "lawyers" etc who are actually all lazy stupid silver spoon retards.
>>97747659IDK man, 2d6+attribute+career vs. 9 is a hard thing to mess up.I will grant that its not infalible and I should take it witha grain of salt, but its a lot easier than flippiong through a lot of pages and forgetting what I was even trying to find when I search for the third page. Its not like im asking for legal consul.
>>97747079It works better as a search engine for pdfs.
>>97746006At any given time I have a vague idea of how it will narratively progress. I'm usually wrong.
>>97746006Improvise. I don't have scenarios, I have situations that I decide how/if to interact with. More Conan random adventures, less Lords of the Rings big campaign.More PC actions than reactions. Unless the law i involved. Trying to evade and escape the law comes up on a regular basis in my games, even when I play a good guy. My main problem with planning is that I'm too hard on myself, so it's entirely possible for me to TPK my party. With players, I would give them a chance, but with myself, no way. It's also not as fun with a planned scenario. I'd rather use the maps, events and NPCs from a scenario and make random tables with them to get new situations. Maybe the dungeon is under the castle instead of in the forest. Maybe the King is Lawful Evil instead of Lawful Good. What if you encounter the goblin tribe first and make friends with them? How will that play out if you get the King to pay you to get rid of them? Will the PC become a con-artist with goblin allies? Or will he get put in jail for speaking in favor of the goblins? Then have to escape and warn them?
>>97746006Does random generation count as improv or planning?
>>97749902Depends on the timing.
How do you guys manage long range travel?I have a scenario that I want to try out to launch into a long form campaign but there's about 800-1000 miles of distance between the homelands of the party and the starting point of the campaign.I keep getting bogged down in the first leg of the travel into the first bordering territory.
>>97750039This, and in fact I find it to be one of the biggest questions and hurtles if I don't decide How I am going to proceed beforehand. Either Before the session randomizing the broad strokes of what is going to happen, or mid event, randomizing what is behind every corner. Of course you do both to some degree usually, but how much you lean into one or the other kind of influences if its more improv or planned.I find it tricky because solo requires you to tread the line between GM and player, and you have to decide how much you have a third person knowledge of whats going on, or how much you are limited to the character you are following. Do you the player.GM KNOW what the bad guy is after before your character encounters them and learns what it is? Or are you just as in the dark as your character is in terms of motives, environments, and elements in play but not yet fully understood.
>>97750050Either speed through it with a couple time skips or make the journey itself the campaign LOTR style where little mini campaigns happen on the journey (Moria, Rohan & Helms Deep, Gondor)
>>97753127Yeah, those seem to be the only ways.I've used the time skip method before with a long set of train rides and the latest campaign has turned into a journey style campaign.
Idk why but I’m just new and when I hear solo rpg all I’m hearing is just CYOA.Am I accurate by a little amount?
>>97753766I never understood what the CYOA stuff was. I use a shit ton of oracles and play according to game rules.
>>97753766A CYOA has you to choose from pre-set options, potentially with randomization to add more granularity to the options. In solo roleplay youre still roleplaying things out, but use tools to add random events and npcs, and to add a system for deciding things when you arent sure what you wanna do or want to keep things from feeling too masturbatory.
>>97753766I thought CYOA was like books."If you want to drink the brown water go to Page 5.If you want to jump off the bridge go to page 77."
>>97753827It's guided daydreaming for point-buy autists. So it can be similar, but it's very much on the lighter side, and usually doesn't go past an initial prompt (unlike journaling games)

>>97755170Oh, I always hated point-buy. It took me the longest time to get into GURPS because I preferred randomization during character creation.
Anyone have a go-to combat scenario they use to test out different combat systems?I just put together a throw away scenario to try out Barbarians of Lemuria.
Ive posted this before, but its been a while since I actually did solo. I just was reminded about a go to oracle method that has worked the best for me. instead of having a table that you have to futz about with, I've found it so much easier to just propose to myself a likely occurrence that comes to my mind, then roll a dice. the closer it is to 1, the more like my initial proposition will be true, the further away, the more out of left field. So something in the middle is something effectively different from what I proposed, but also easily plausible, while rolling really high is something different then my proposition AND unlikely.>Determined that there was a method to sneak into the tower, but what is it? A likely method would be climbing to the top via a nearby tree or rough hewn rocksroll a d12>1-3ish Yes, those things are available there is a tree next to the tower>4-9 ish No, but there is a depression next to the tower, you might be able to dig underneath>10-12ish, The guard is real down bad and you hear him moaning about there being no "women of flexible morality" nearby. Maybe you could hire (or dress up as) one. This has consistently been like 80% of my gm emulator rolls. Makes things go super smooth instead of having to figure out HOW I am supposed to interpret a vague oracle.
>>97756167Ok, finished up my test combat session, had fun! Feel like the combat is a nice middle ground between light enough to be relatively quick, but complex enough for some fun tactical play.>Playing what is essentially a scout/cleric>Tasked by my order with taking down a gnoll raiding outpost that has commandeered a tower.>Through observation found that the privy hole on the second floor could be busted through.>Luckily a storm was comming so that could give me cover. aLso preemptively made knots in my grappling hook rope for ease of climbing>Climbed to the poop hole all right, but despite the storm, I made too much noise and a gnoll came to check whats up while im only half way through it.>It got the Jump on me while I was in a compromised position, but thankfully my armor saved me and I was able to tackle the creature down the stairs giving me enough space to pull my sword and get an advantageous position at the top of the stairs. >Held that position as two waves of gnolls and goblins came at me, eventually there was enough bodies and blood to make the staircase a tripping hazard.>Had just enough time between pushes to enchant my sword giving it Armor piercing capabilities. >Between the viscera and only so many creatures being able to be in the starway at once I was able to funnel them in mostly 1s and 2s>One gnoll got into a blood frenzy, snapping the neck of a goblin then giving me a nasty bite to my shoulder, but was able to finish it and everyone else off with my enchanted blade besides a single goblin.>attempted to shoot the retreating bugger, but missed and it disappeared into the stormy night.Fun time.Though I am not quite convinced about the meta currency hero points. I think they could maybe come at some sort of cost and/or be lessened. Definitely adds to the heroic feel tho.
I don't think I'll ever be comfortable enough with myself to roleplay a conversation without a partner. That's truly weird. It is looking like LLMs will be useful for filling that role soon. We've got the text generating capabilities now, but in the future I anticipate better voice and visual customizability.
>>97760181Are you unable to roleplay in third person? No offense meant
>>97761196what would dialogue look like in third person
>>97761394anon says this to anon, anon responds to anon
>>97761394You dont necessarily have to play things out line by line, just think about what they talk about more than the exact wording"PC pleads with NPC to free their comrades. NPC says he'll need to prove their innocence
>>97761394Most fiction is written in third person.
I was inspired by Me, myself and dies broken empires godbounds. Basically they have a hidden piety score that works as a d100 skill. The whole point of it is to be semi unknown to the player, and the gods being fickle. So I wanted to work it into my solo game, but how could I have an unknown variable if I'm the gm?Best I've got is a card deck system>starting piety is 73>assemble a deck 'worth' 73 >try to take as few cards as possible (K,K,K,Q,Q,9 =73)>everytime you use the gods power, flip your cards and count the total>request is granted or it fails>if the request is small take 1 card, medium take 2, large take 3 and outrageous take 4 cards out of the deck at random, whether you failed or not>everytime you do your gods duties add a card to your deckI think it works well enough, haven't played much yet though.
>>97761490>>97761557That'd be "indirect speech" and what I want is "direct speech". I know how to do it, I'm just saying it feels weird.>>97761569Sure but we're talking dialogue which is normally first person.>>97761637I'm a little confused by the rules, when is the request granted? I made this html page that tracks a hidden piety score. Just don't do the math and add it up.
>>97761806>dialogue which is normally first personNo, dialogue is the same as everything else. Unless you mean the people talking are speaking in the third person, which would just look like normal third person writing. I confused as to what's confusing you.
>>97762132pretty sure dialogue is specifically first person. its what people say.>>97761806>>97760181I find it pretty easy to just describe the attitude/method and information>"He's in the mountains of morn... I guess" he grumbled.Nothing fancy>"He must be somewhere" he said roundaboutly >"No passage" he said tersely.>"I'll agree to that deal" he said jollily Don't have to write the full conversation, just the gist.
>>97761806Ah yeah I forgot to add that. Basically the request works as a d100 roll under, so if you roll under your piety the request is granted. I'm not sure if I should also use difficulty modifiers to make outrageous request harder, but I think losing so many cards and piety is punishing enough.>Piety score trackerSeems cool, but I like to keep my stuff analog
>>97761637This is pretty neat. Yoink.
How do you play out combat? I saw one method where you roll for the behavior by assigning a percent chance to a move. Like a wizards would have: 40% to attack, 10% to flee, 20% to cast a spell, 30% to surrender. Or in your experience is it better to just take the turn of the enemy yourself, not rolling for it.
>>97761637>>97764229I would personally just reword a wild magic/miscast syatem from like dnd or warhammer. Maybe make it so that one end of the d100 is more generally good and the other end is more generally bad. maybe you roll twice and take the highest/lowest to simulate when you are in the god's favor/disfavor, making positive or negitive results more likely, but still with the possibility of anything due to the god's fickleness. That or some other method of bending statistics one way or the other.
>>97634595K, finished my first solo session of Warhammer: the Old World Roleplaying Game. Had a good time! I like it overall but there are definitely some bugs. Like I mentioned, I really like how the characteristic-skills dynamic works. This is the play by play>Me, noisy argumentative watchmen, my morally flexible pal, and a Brewgaurd lent to us stumbled on a dark conclave of robbed men one day. Talking about the downfall of Talagaad>They didnt see us personally but they knew someone overheard them, one thing we recognized was an oddly specific perfume emanating from one of them>We know we are fucked if there are powerful members of that group and they look into gaurd routes of that night. So we decide to hunt them down before they can do that to us>ofc, we first track down an exotic perfume seller, thats were we start>See him being ruffed up by some thugs, Comb our hand and put on as imperious look as we can. Dress down the thugs and they try to bribe us>Bribes are well and good, but Id rather keep my throat by finding out who will be trying to be slitting ours so we fight.>First few are just normal rabble nothing to note. We put 2 handed hammer brewgaurd in front, me with halberd behind, and sketchy gotfreid on top of another stall firing with crossbow.>last two tuffs rip out of their shirt Arnold style and one is covered in brass scales, the other, iron, mutants. Fuck us up a bit, but perfumer throws (and misses) a pot of greek fire. Dwarf hammers one into the fire, I see an unarmored bit, catch the other there under the armpit with the halberd hook and throw him in as well.>watch the campfire burn, dwarf gets flung like a bearded beachball while one is in death flail>When dead, the perfumer puts a powder on the dwarves' flaming behind and the bodies>Convince perfumer to see manifest>See that a certain noble family bought the perfume.>Question now is who in the family is it, or maybe they all have to go....\>>97738655Sweet art and aethetics man
Has anyone noticed that they have made implicate rules that have followed you between systems? I have. I have this general unspoken rule that a character can do two notable things per round, but they cannot both be direct attacks. So that's movement-attack, like is pretty common broadly, but also attack-trip, or attack climb, or force someone back than trip. So far I have not found it over powered, but it adds a lot of flavor and cool dynamics to events compared to just one major action and a movement
>>97771872You should get a blood hound dog. Track 'em down.>>97771947I believe that's for balance reasons.
>>97738655I compiled that and what little i did since into one png. Tried to upload before but i reduced the resolution a bit TOO much. Here's hoping it isnt too crushed
>>97738655My recommendation is to have something that automates the tedious parts of Mythic: table lookup. I recommend the Solo Roleplaying Toolkit linked above or RanDM Solo, or the (supposedly) official Mythic app.
>>97777044>I believe that's for balance reasons.yah I know, but it really constricts what kind of inventive things you can do. a lot of things require two effective actions, at which point in one action one move systems, the turn has passed and the situation has changed and you cant justify it in terms of sheer action economy. Then you just default to boring regular attack actions to take as many hit points off the guy before they can do that to you. rather than attack and bonk him in the head so hes less likely to hit next round, attack and kick him down the stairs to get some distance between you too, attack and slowly retreat 10 feet, not moving your full distance but not suffering an attack of opportunity. that more flavorful stuff.
>>97738655Ive posted this before, and I Have tried to use a number of systems, Mythic, Maze rats', Zathrum, etc, and all of them I have felt became janky for how I play. A lot of the results they give dont seem to fit or I dont know how to interpret, or seem a bit convoluted. Its stupid simple, but this works for me: I propose a likely thing I would encounter, then I roll a die. If it is a lower number, that thing happens, if it is a medium number I make up a different and distinct, but also likely eventuality instead, If a high number something I wouldnt immediately expect happens and its kind of out of left field. It seems really basic, but I have found that it really keeps things going and its actually a lot easier to come up with things by likelihood then trying to interpret a vague adjective and noun. I don't need a table or nothing, just a starting supposition and the ability to abstract increasingly unlikely alternatives. Also, be as pretentious as you want, its a solo game, its ment to be as self masterbatory as you can stand. OFC, if you want to be, sometimes I ask for feedbackcause I DONT want to be pretensious and sometimes second eyes can help with that. But I think you got a pretty cohesive theme and tone.>>97777108sweet
>>97777044>You should get a blood hound dog. Track 'em downnot a bad idea... I was hesitant at first, because my original plan was to infultrate the estate, but now that I think about it, waiting outside of the estate with a blood hound and tracking the scent is a lot less risky, thanks!>>97780174>pic related is after I feed my bloodhound warpstone and it turns into a rideable stead.
Any recently released oneshot zines you'd recommend? Also, is the restless worthwhile?
>>97778375I started using the mythic app a couple days ago for this, and ive felt it helpful. One thing that always feels a bit wonky is just the tables i think, since theyre so wide-reaching that i dont always know if i rolled on the "right" one for the situation
Anyone play dnd modules?
>>97781894Where would someone get zines from (not pirated)
>>97786142Itch.io, there's a ton of them of varying quality.>>97781894The only Zine I know is Beyond the Borderlands, which isn't a one-shot per se.
>>97785832YEP!Though more recently I have preferred other systems.I have a campaign playing through B10 nights dark terror that has been on hold for a few months. Last I left off was finishing defending in the seige of Sukiskyn by Goblins. As something in the OSR side. I started Soloing with the 5e module Hoard of the Dragon Queen, though that was more of a loose cyoa.Though desu, I remember preferring the smaller modules you could find in dungeon magazines, especially the ones that were a few pages at most. I find large pre-made modules kind of janky for solo play, because things can go off kilter easily and you eventually have to keep a lot of things in mind. Things like Light of lost souls I find perfect. You have 1-3 ish locations, a clear goal, and a number of npc's in play. that you can all set up beforehand.(ps I hate how I cant upload pdf's any more and I got to put things in a janky image. Screw you sharty!)
>>97777108You can also save file size space if you use gimp, go to (Image > Mode > Indexed). Set the maximum colors (e.g., 256, 128, or fewer) and choose to generate an optimum palette.
>>97788960I was doing it on my phone out of laziness :P
Anyone know if it's good?
>>97786142itch and drivethru rpg are most common places aside from niche indie publishers/art collectives. Most let you print and play, but some you can only purchase a physical version from them which can be can be annoying depending on how far they are from you regarding shipping costs. The problem is theres so much on itch and drivethru that I find it time consuming to find something decent. I don't have much time recently and am looking for stuff I can just learn and play in one sitting, like mini adventures/dungeons/stories.

Any of you tried playing necronica solo? I think about trying it with the for two rules.

What's your guys oracle of choice for answering questions?
>>97797418I've always liked this simple Yes/No oracle. I also have a "Random Adjectives" table that I really like that I got out of a Mutants & Masterminds book.I also have a "List of Desires" oracle that I use to generate ideas for quests.
