Your love-hate relationship with this hobby and adjacent hobbies to the tabletop role-playing and war games.

I love the stories, the tales, the world building, especially of the ad hoc, halcyon days of a hobby that I missed out on.

But I also feel that I'm coming in at the tail end of the party where it feels like the song 'closing time' is playing. Also on top of that I kind of live in the middle of a table top hobby desert.
Not to mention finding a game online that doesn't dry up in five sessions or less, it's pointless unless you have a already long-standing group of lads you can trust. Truly The catch 22 of the tabletop hobby. You need a group to have games, but need to find and make a group that have games. And even then the group can dissolve for any reason whatsoever. Leaving you at square One over and over again.

You can call solo play a game, the same way you can call solitary as playing cards.

I love the narrative freedom that I have, even as a player. No other media lets you take part of the creative process.
I dislike how slow combat can be and having to wait a week or more before I can play again. Sure solo games and AI GMs exist, but it's not the same.
>>

You need to put in the effort. My longstanding group of 10+ years started here and continues. When my IRL group of 5 years collapsed due to life issues, I put ads at the FLGS and lurked the discord. A month later, I had a group that is lasting 1 1/2 years so far. Meeting new people is the worst part, but you just have to be persistent and weed out the undesirable players.

Just do it.
>>
>>97643359
Easier said than done.

I did that once, put quite a bit of effort into for about 2 to 3 years. But I was backstabbed by someone I considered a friend. I know it's been a couple of years now but I'm still feel 'emotionally' spitting up blood, on the occasion especially when the thought of playing or running a tabletop role playing game.

The reason why I use that analogy is because when I was first betrayed all I could compare to the feeling was spitting up my own teeth. For quite some time I still felt my own teeth rattling around in my mouth along along with a feeling of choking on my own blood. The sharp acidic iron taste along with the ever-present ache of nerves.

I'm much better than I am in the past, but I still need a bit more time to heal. Along with the thought of being part of a group that is fill me with other thread like knowing eventually it's all going to end. The question is would it be a whimper or would it be an explosion.

I was playing tabletop when you were still in middle school

I love painting minis, building terrain and playing seminarrative wargames. I hate how the hobby isnt about the hobby anymore but the community and either its total safe space attempted fag colonization or I got to listen to how woke is ruining everything and be reminded that transexuals exist.
>>
>>97643173
I find the normies of this hobby much easier to interact with than the greasy unwashed neckbeard telling me how epic his Mono Blue deck is for the umpteenth time, but then lie and tell me it's a Low 2 while constantly vaporizing my lands preventing me from playing the game.

The thing about an activity that doesn’t require engaging with anyone outside of your closed group is that you can always be selective about who you let into the group and how you engage in the activity. Nothing has passed you by, you merely lack the conviction to create the group you want to play in.
>>

This is true for most people which is why 80% of hobby interest is in the slop thats hypercommercialized and popular, because otherwise they arent getting in any games.

I love the creativity. Getting a break from being around normies. Making great memories for my friends(one of them brought up an NPC from a game in the 2000's which more than made up for all the times players have totally forgotten the previous session).

I hate the logistical elements. Dealing with weird mental illnesses. When I have to exclude someone because other players find them creepy or they're so autistic they'll try to min-max even when asked not to and then their feelings hurt. Quirky free spirit types who need to be reminded of games but if you remind them with the wrong tone they'll rebel and flake. Phones interrupting the game.

>Also on top of that I kind of live in the middle of a table top hobby desert.

Look into gaming adjacent hobbies like ren faires, book clubs, and the like. I've made most of my gaming friends through other hobbies. Even if you have a bustling LGS the people who hang out there regularly are usually human detritus.

I love playing roleplaying games with friends

I hate reading people online talking about roleplaying games because they either come across like nogames fags, play the most braindead retarded "I roll to seduce the dragon" 5e or have this extreme focus on this one way to play the game where everything else is wrong. All three are completely impossible to converse with.

I'd rather play with dudebros who just want to play a Gimli homage and a Stacy who wants to be a gloryhound paladin than some smelly obese "trve nerd" who brings a multiclassed tiefling "build" with a five page backstory to the game.

Pic related, Chad and Stacy's characters.

>designing stupid traps for the party to navigate

Anon, any thread with positivity doesn't get a lot of traction.

As someone who was in a similar position, it was right then and there that I realized tabletop wasn't for me. I can still post about the hobby from time to time but solely as an outside observer, never the gm or player. It will never truly get better. If you've been betrayed once you'll get betrayed twice, because people will sense that weakness and exploit it regardless of you telling them or not. Anyone who could be considered good is now safely secured in their own little discords which are full enough without coddling traumatized strangers that haven't played in years.

You need to spend a lot of time these days to get some kind of real group together. Anon's estimate is ridiculously generous. Rather than a month it'd be closer to a year and a half to get a group together for anything more intensive than beer and pretzels.

Making the mistake of jumping back into tabletop on a whim, putting in hour after hour of effort trying to get involved and invested, ended up with me losing a lot of time, to say nothing of mental energy and social capital, with barely anything to speak of for games including both running and playing. If there's anything I could say I learned from revisiting this "hobby" I didn't the first go around it'd be that people will never change. They will never care about you. Tabletop consumed years of lifespan while I neglected the hobbies I enjoyed before and afterwards. Do not make the mistake I did. Please let my suffering prevent you from following my footsteps.

What I love is trying to recapture the feeling I had when I was 16 and had a campaign of Shadowrun 4th edition something like 20 sessions deep and the group was comprised of my best friends from school who lived walking distance away.

Scheduling was never an issue, we always made time. Sometimes we'd pool our minimum wage part time job money for pizza or get an older brother to buy us beer

Some of them took turns GMing so I cold play every third or fourth session. When they did I would play as one of the recurring NPCs or one of the PCs contacts. That felt like it fleshed out the world more that way.

We had plot points and character arcs that evolved over weeks or months.

Characters lived and died and it all felt real.

What I hate is ill never have that again

I find it hard to believe, given the percentage of transgender people is less than 1%, that they're all "trannies".
My guess is that you saw one transgendered person or even people showing their preferred pronouns and sperged out.
To answer your question, maybe try actually playing a game.

Love:
>Painting big armies to a high quality
>Having battles big or small with lots of homebrew rules to make it memorable (wargaming)
>Terrain so well made its like you're playing a diorama
>doing funny voices
>Getting to feel accepted by a group for once and actually having people looking forward to seeing me
Hate:

>games that drag on forever.
Look after the 4 hour point we've had our fun and are gassed out. Ive had games of Battletech drag on for 8 hours before and it was miserable. Perfect length for any tabletop game is 2.5 to 3 hours.

Im so grateful my wargaming group was able to root out the maladjusted sweatlords and its now mostly sane individuals capable of holding a conversation. Beer and pretzel games won out over crunchfests because functioning adults can play them while shit like warmahordes is targeted at basement dwelling turbo autists that absolutely nothing matters in life other than winning this week's tournament.

I really love how you can use wargaming rules to really simulate some kind of crazy fantastical battle in ways that make some good sense, I also really like telling stories through systems like that with unique scenarios and stakes, it's always such a great time. I hate that the expectations for these sorts of games have largely changed in my area and that my friends don't seem to want to play anymore.

I was blackmailed for the money I spent on trying to put a friend who was an artist through medical school. It was around $800 and Destroyed my reputation that I spent years Cultivating they be a likeable guy.
So now I'm a no games fag with no friends to play with.
On top of that he broke me with his smear and harassment campaign against me for half a year, that I practically don't know how to even approach people anymore when it comes to tabletop, Especially when it comes to discord or online.
>>
>>97676439
The tabletop hobby is composed of traditional games
This is like talking about the sports industry in general as opposed to Football or Cricket on /sp/
>>
>>97679208
Continue...
In a way you could say he blackmailed me, destroyed with little reputation I had where everyone would shun me, then left me completely isolated.
So from the beginning I am left with less than nothing. Better yet I have less than nothing and social trauma and baggage to add to it.
>>
>>97679208
Unsure you're attempting to communicate with this. You were blackmailed using the information that you'd given a friend (who is an artist; not sure what relevance that has here) $800 to help pay for his medical school? How would the knowledge that you'd been charitable to a friend destroy your reputation or serve as appropriate blackmail material?
>>
>>97679208
>>97679344

I had a similar issue to you in that someone in the group ended up isolating me, talked shit about me with everyone else, and then convinced the group to turn their back on me. They even had convinced some of them to "keep an eye on" me through social media. And these were people I'd know for close to ten years before it happened. Luckily a couple of them had their own brain and didn't believe the lies but it did end up being a huge shock to me when it happened.

That said, it also pushed me to be more active at the flgs and it didn't take too long to replace the bonds I'd lost with ones with like minded autists. Things get better, anon, but sometimes you gotta do the hard work yourself.

>>97644113
nta but I tried this and couldn't really find enough players that fit in. The small handful drifted apart or were too busy to keep up anyway, and the ones that resonated the most were older and also too disagreeable in their own ways. On top of that, actually finding the few that I found took a great deal of effort over several months because every online community is filled with tourists or alphabets and there's no real community for it locally for physical games where I am.
>>
>>97643173
I *would* complain about other tabletop fans but it stands to reason that if you post here, you might be a bit odd. I'm just not much of a joiner...

Anyway, if you said pick one of these two:
>playing ACKS II with people who have roleplayed for 30 plus years each and who can immediately grasp any matrix of rules
>playing Heroquest with friends and family, talking shit and making cups of tea

I'm going for the latter every time. The crunchy obscure stuff is just for me to play solo, the other people who like that stuff act like someone literally stole their dick. They deconstruct and argue about everything like sexless bearded Pharisees.
