Kek. Reminds me of pic.

Now now, that one's a cleric/paladin weapon.
A stick of dynamite is a classic backup you can light off your traditional wizard pipe or off a cantrip-tier candleflame from your finger.

I like the scepter, or the orb. Most fantasy settings have the staff or whatever artifact acting as some kind of grounding element to a focus, generically a crystal, but you can get really interesting with it.
If we're just talking whatever focus you want as the spelly weapon, I had a bard who used a goblin skull death whistle as his focus.
If anyone remembers the MMO rift, the spellcasters in that game could, if equipped, send spells straight out of their books, which I always enjoyed.
melee weapons tell a story, how does this person protect themselves? it should be a reflection of the user and their background. Is he a spellthief? What about a hand crossbow, with bolts that have enchanted payloads?
What about some gutterpunk warlock? A mace would fit there, something he could ditch in a hurry, not too difficult to conceal, easily replaced. Short wooden club with an iron weight at the end.
Or, for a gun mage, how about a bottomless brace of flintlocks!

I like the classic wand. I'm also a big fan of the floating tome that's seen a lot in anime, especially when the magic seems to shoot OUT of the book. Also pulling from anime, I always liked Roy Mustang's trick of having his alchemical circle on his gloves. I could see a similar thing in a D&D game where a series of crystals woven into a glove could be a focus...or is that just the Infinity Gauntlet?

Your wizard does work out at the gym as well as the library, right anon? Regular excercise improves cognitive ability.

Chemical and bacteriological weapons, with command of the elements once can have precise control over area of effect, offsetting their most glaring drawback.
>>
depends on the game
>>
Darts, unironically.
I always pictures mages in a mage guild throwing darts to relax.
Then some jerk shows up and magic missiles the dartboard to smithereens and laughs.
Wizards: No Sense of Right and Wrong
But seriously they're a good compact ranged weapon and make more sense than throwing knives since those require a lot more skill.
Also slings.
My personal list of proficiencies for wizards:
Staff
Dagger
Dart
Sling

No crossbow. Its stupid to see a wizard walk around with a crossbow. Outside of a specific build, I don't think it should be allowed.

Slings and darts retard.

If your mage has a "caster gun" or "spell canon" you are playing STAR WARS, not DUNGEONS & DRAGONS. Just give him a fucking bazooka if you went that far.

Nothing. A wizard just nods and you die.
>>
>>97646440

>>
A ballista.
With the right combination of enchantments and magical modifications you end up with the fantasy equivalent of a self-propelled gun.
The wizard won't need to rely on their physical strength to load, move, or aim it.
Variable combinations of runes engraved on the missiles it launches can produce different effects; it's just a matter of selecting the right one for the job!

Look at this fag who doesn't know about musclewizardry. I bet the only "fist" that this anon knows about is when the gays at the bathhouse put five up his ass, because he's gay!

(meanwhile trve patricians know the "fist" spell and cast it to punch their enemies)

Swords.
It's honestly kinda weird how sword+staff wizards are not that big of a thing, considering that's literally Gandalf. I suppose DnD Bladesinger is supposed to wield sword+spellcasting focus which kinda tracks but then fluff-wise it's all musical theatre shit and not plain old wizardy.
