Today I'm going to start a project to post all the 90's MTG comics, in somewhat chronological order. Though I'm not sure if Taysir or Urza comes first in lore, I'm at least partially sure its Taysir, since he was the original strongest planeswalker.

We start with our hero Taysir, killing Taysir.

The lore to Arabian Nights is somehow Rabiah, was reflected over itself a thousand times, making their 1001 similar planes stacked onto each other.

Taysir, however, was copied only 5 times, one for each color of mana. The rest of the plot, sort of works like Highlander. If one was to kill the others, he'd be absurdly powerful, and more importantly, a planeswalker.

As such, Taysir of Rabiah appears in a decent number of pre-Revisionist stories, and is credited as the writer of Encyclopedia Dominia. He was also one of the Nine Titans of Urza, and had it not been for the kill switch, might have had a good fight against Urza.

Sadly his image appears

Guay's first appearance in MTG isn't Alliances, but the Homelands comic.

There's some great names in these comics. Much better than the Boom! Comics that were around for a while.

Also it's indeed her hair.

I always liked how they attempted to incorporate actual characters from both the set, and the Arabian Nights. Here we see Abu Ja'far explaining why he's a leper, and mentioning El_Hajjaj, the first creature with lifelinl.

Oubliette is one of the most drastically errata'd cards in the game. The original targeted on cast (it infamously could be countered with Avoid Fate), removed the target from the game, and worked as that. Sometime around Classic 6th edition, it was errata'd to phase the target creature out until it left play, and had a cip trigger.

Sometime, when MaRo was made with 'restoring functionality' on errata, he changed it back to exiling the target, which works closer to the original intention, before it being reprinted with phasing, thanks to the popularity of EDH.

"The Story of Mishra and Urza is the best known tale in Terisiare and has been carried to all corners of Dominaria. That is not to be said it's a complete or entirely coherent narrative, as there have been several versions of the tale over the years, each reflecting the tenor of its age. During the time known as The Dark, Urza and Mishra were presented as black-hearted villains, responsible for the fallen state of the world they left in their passing. During the long Ice Age, they were reinvented as potential saviors, patron saints of a long-dead technology that could yet save the world. In the present age they have been alternatively presented as heroes and villains, savants and fools, exulted to the heavens or condemned to the flaming pits of Phyrexia. This version attempts to portray them as they were, people of their time, affecting and affected by the world around them.
The version you hold in your hands, like almost all recognized version, takes a primary source, The Antiquities War, an epic poem-cycle by Kayla bin-Kroog. It's one of the few complete records to survive from the age of the Brother's War. In addition, the author has been scrupulous in tracking down what few primary sources exist from that period, and has painstakingly pored through later editions of the tale, removing those parts that were either patently untrue or shaped by the desires and wishes of later scribes.
The result is the most complete and modern account of Urza and Mishra and the conflict that swallowed them and their world. It's a rendition of the classic tale set to the present age. The reader should trust this version and no other."

There is also a passage about Dominaria dual dating system, AR (Argivian Reckoning), and PF (Penregon Founding) which would have been used in their time.

Interestingly enough, in the old comics, a third dating system is presented, The Reckoning of the Sages of Minorad, which we will get to later.

A third Urza and Mishra story exists, a manga, that takes a great deal of liberties with the story as well, could also be considered canon in universe thanks to that passage.

Honestly its amazing world building that WotC, or anyone really, would dare try anymore.

It really was something special. Before the Weatherlight Saga, the game didn't have stories, as much as it had settings.

There was also a lack of available new cards for a while, as big box stores didn't carry MTG. So you would have to go to game stores, hobby shops, or craft shops to get them.

>It really was something special. Before the Weatherlight Saga, the game didn't have stories, as much as it had settings.
This is an apt way of putting it. Defenders of the modern paradigm, particularly UB, like to trot out the old "this thing was NEVER good" argument as a way of shaming oldheads for not liking the direction the game has taken. They point to the fact that Jace isn't as recognizable in pop culture as Pikachu or Yugi Moto as proof. Putting aside the multimedia blitz that those latter two benefitted from, Magic of old focused on developing its worlds, making settings for stories to emerge from, worlds you wanted to explore, places you'd, well, want to planeswalk to. The characters emerged from that, and departed when their story was done. There was no Hello Kitty style mascot. Maybe that was a mistake from a marketing perspective, but it certainly was no failure.

I've always theorized, Urza is autistic. Just the general way he acts.

One of my biggest issues, more so than black Kayla, is how they changed Ashnod, from a brtual femme fatale with experiments, to some victorian esque nerd. It fucking sucks.

Here we see one of the major retcons between the Comic version and the novel. Urza in the novel receives the Jalum Tome on his wedding night, and leaves Kayla alone on her bed while he pours over its pages.

One of my big issues with The Brother's War set is how clean and modern everything looked.

The brother's war is supposed to be more like 'imagine if Mesopotamia (and Egypt) suddenly got WW2 tech and the means to replicate them.

A symptom of the new border affecting the mentality. Artifacts are now clean and shiny, perhaps battle-scarred but polished and maintained, rather than rusty old relics wrenched from the earth.

This will be the last comic in this thread. The next two comics, Urza-Mishra, are two 'prestige format' comics, and each on it about 60 pages each. I'll be making a new thread for them.

As for now, good night.

Given how the name "Kayla bin Kroog" is clearly middle-eastern coded and the kingdom is next to a desert populated by Bedouin-like nomads, her looking like a generic middle-European fantasy royalty feels more odd.
Cute autistic dork Ashnod is cute, even if it is a very different characterization from cold femme fatale Ashnod.
